12 best at home radon test kits
At-home radon test kits are devices designed for homeowners to test the radon levels in their indoor spaces, primarily in residential buildings. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into homes through the ground and can potentially pose health risks when it accumulates to high levels. Here's what you should know about at-home radon test kits:
Purpose: The primary purpose of at-home radon test kits is to measure the concentration of radon gas in indoor air. Elevated levels of radon are a concern because long-term exposure can increase the risk of lung cancer.
Ease of Use: These test kits are typically easy to use and do not require specialized knowledge or equipment. They are designed to be user-friendly, allowing homeowners to perform the tests themselves.
Types of Tests: There are two main types of radon test kits:
- Short-Term Tests: These kits provide a snapshot of radon levels over a short period, usually two to seven days. They are ideal for getting a quick assessment of radon levels.
- Long-Term Tests: Long-term kits are used to measure radon levels over an extended period, typically three months or more. They provide a more accurate representation of radon exposure over time and are recommended for a more comprehensive assessment.
Placement: Radon test kits are usually placed in the lowest livable area of the home, like the basement or ground floor. They should be positioned according to the manufacturer's instructions for accurate results.
Analysis: After the test period is complete, you send the kit to a laboratory for analysis. The lab will provide you with a report detailing the radon levels in your home.
Interpretation: Radon test results are typically measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends taking action if the radon levels in your home are 4 pCi/L or higher.Lower levels may still warrant attention, and homeowners may consider mitigation options to reduce radon levels.
Mitigation: If high radon levels are detected, homeowners may need to consider radon mitigation systems, which are designed to reduce radon concentrations indoors. These systems typically involve installing ventilation and barrier systems to prevent radon from entering the home.
At-home radon test kits are a valuable tool for homeowners to assess their indoor air quality and determine whether radon mitigation measures are necessary. It's essential to follow the instructions provided with the kit carefully and to take action if elevated radon levels are detected to protect the health of the household.

User questions & answers
Question: | I see there are air holes in the back, so if it is placed against a surface, won't it impede the airflow into the detector |
Answer: | According to the company's website, the unit should be placed on its back (display facing upwards), on a flat surface, at breathing-level height, and away from windows, doors, air vents, etc. See https://support.airthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003370189-How-do-I-place-my-Home-radon-detector-to-obtain-correct-measurements- Or as their FAQ answer states: "You can just lay it flat on a table or a shelf. The air flows into the Radon chamber as usual." https://support.airthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001097069-Can-I-just-lay-the-unit-flat-on-its-back-side- |
Question: | what is the shortest amount of time you can do a test with this device? a home inspection last only a few hours..will it have to be left over night |
Answer: | Professional testers need to be used for a 48 hour test. For this home unit, it should run at least a week to be somewhat accurate. A month would be better. It will have a 20% deviation for a 48 hour test. 7 day test should be around 10% deviation and 2 months around 5%. Right now, mine has about a 30% deviation compared against professional 48 hour testers. I'm contacting support now for help. I've owned it for about 6 months. |
Question: | Are we positive the readings are accurate? I have now tested the first floor of the house and am getting a reading of 7.5 pCi/l |
Answer: | We have two older (15+ years) Safety Siren meters that read 2.3 & 2.4 for both long and short readings and seem stuck even after a reset/retest in our radon mitigated basement. The new Airthings 223 started a little over 2.0 and slowly dropped to 1.8. Yesterday I resealed the sump pit covers to the floor and the Airthings 223 1-day average already ( |
Question: | how often does the tester need to be calibrated and how much does it cost to calibrate |
Answer: | My answer has nothing to do with radon concentration in the tested environment, but incorrect terminology being used on this discussion thread. Resetting the radon sensing instrumentation means system initialization to factory calibration, as the unit is not user calibrate able. Calibration implied by this question is to a standard, and it must have been done with the prototype designs when tested against known radon concentrations in chambers...using perhaps master instrumentation. I think this device can give you values within some level of confidence like 95%...but the measure value of any unit like this is not to be taken with 100% confidence. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How are the results delivered? Phone, email, or snail mail |
Answer: | Sorry-- I checked outside the sealed box but instructions are inside so I don't know. They do say they have an express service for real estate so a clue would be USPS perhaps. They may have changed their instructions also. I don't think it would be by phone. Helen |
Question: | Why are all the tests results comments negitive. No prove it works |
Answer: | I have used this product in the past and have gotten my results in about a week after sending the kit back. The first one was for a home I was selling and the Radon level was low which was expected for the area. The second test was at my lake cabin which was very high and common for that area. So I feel they are fairly accurate. However I just sent one in two weeks ago from my newly built home and have not gotten the results back yet so now I'm starting to wonder. They did charge my credit card right away. |
Question: | I have had this test kit for about a year (unopened) and now ready to use. Didn't see an expiration date on the kit. Has anyone else |
Answer: | No I don't believe they expire. |
Question: | why is all the results negative |
Answer: | Having been in the Home Inspection and Testing business for over 20 years I do not recommend homeowners do their own testing as there is a strict protocol that needs to be followed, also this is only a short term test and alpha or 90 day test gives a much more accurate idea of the Radon gas concentrations in the home. Also, Radon Gas is present everywhere so you will get "negative " results every time but those results need to be compared to the EPA established guidelines. |

Why Choose an Activated Charcoal Radon Test?
Charcoal detectors are generally a far superior option for radon testing. Electronic devices do not meet the NRPP certification requirements, lose their accuracy over time and need to be re-calibrated, which often costs nearly as much as the device itself.
The Health Metric Radon Test includes one of the largest volumes of activated charcoal. This leads to greater accuracy, fewer errors and more reliable results.
The Health Metric Radon Test Kit includes:
1 x Activated charcoal radon sampler
1 x Health Metric radon booklet
1 x Instruction sheet

User questions & answers
Question: | The shipping label is big, where do you put it on that small envelope |
Answer: | The standard-size shipping label sticker is applied to the shipping envelope. You can put the kit into a larger package if you like, then apply the label. |
Question: | If I tested for more than 96 hours, will it still be analyzable |
Answer: | Unfortunately test kits that are exposed for more than 96 and less than 48 hours are invalid and cannot be analyzed. Our equipment is calibrated to specific exposure periods, and it's not possible to obtain an accurate reading for test kits that are exposed for an incorrect amount of time. |
Question: | Do I need a test kit for each room in the basement or 1? It is about 1500 square feet and has two bedrooms, living areas, bathroom and laundry room |
Answer: | One test will provide a good indication of radon. But testing two rooms will show if there is a difference in levels between the two. This model kit includes the shipping label so there are no mail-in fees. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RJZDSX7/?tag=jameslaytonco-20 |
Question: | Why do radon levels fluctuate |
Answer: | Radon levels are constantly changing! There are many different factors contributing to radon levels, but essentially, changes in the air pressure inside and outside your home affect the radon levels of your home. Radon gas is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas found in the soil. As it is a gas, it is continually seeking a lower air pressure area; basically, moving from the soil to the air. Just like water always tries to find the easiest path downhill, radon tries to find the easiest path out of the soil and into the air. When water is running down a steep hill, it flows faster than on a gentle slope. Likewise, radon flows faster when there is a bigger difference in pressure between the high pressure soil and the low pressure air. This principle of pressure differences is the main driving force that causes radon to enter your home, and also causes radon levels to change. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this test kit and lab testing valid for a home in New Jersey |
Answer: | Our product is certified in all states in the US where required, including New Jersey. Our NEHA (national) certification number is 101132AL, and our New Jersey MEB number is 90095. There is an additional $10 regulatory fee required for the analysis of all test kits performed in the state of New Jersey. This is the only state where a fee is required, and it is because New Jersey charges us a regulatory fee for each test kit analyzed in that state. |
Question: | Is it better to test the basement or another floor |
Answer: | We recommend testing in the lowest livable level of your house (usually the basement), but it could be a bit up to your preference! Here’s why we recommend the basement: 1. Radon sits a little heavier than the air, so the highest concentration of radon is usually found in the lowest level of the building. By testing in the basement area you are basically testing for the “worst case scenario” of your home’s radon levels. It’s very rare that a house with low radon levels in the basement has high radon levels in the above floors! 2. Radon naturally occurs in the soil, so by testing the lowest level you are also testing closer to the most likely entry point of radon gas. 3. Most real estate transactions require that the lowest livable level is tested. This includes a level that could be lived in or modified to live in, so even an unfinished basement. Radon levels are usually different between levels of your house. If you don’t spend a significant amount of time in your basement or just want to know your levels for personal knowledge, you could test an area of the house that you spend more time in! |
Question: | Can I ship multiple kits together |
Answer: | Yes, you can have multiple kits in one shipping package! Please be certain that each radon sampler is sealed in its own individual mailer to prevent cross contamination. |
Question: | Is there a cost for lab analysis on my kit |
Answer: | There is no other cost with the exception on NJ residents. There is an additional $10 regulatory fee required for the analysis of all test kits performed in the state of New Jersey. This is the only state where a fee is required, and it is because New Jersey charges us a regulatory fee for each test kit analyzed in that state. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a cost for lab analysis on my kit |
Answer: | The yellow-themed kit does not include the pre-paid label. Some homeowners wish to use their own shipping service. The green-themed radon kits come with a pre-paid shipping label. |
Question: | do I need more than one test kit for a large area |
Answer: | Usually, one test kit is sufficient! Our radon samplers are good for levels up to 2,000 sq. ft. This does not refer to your entire house square footage; just the level or floor of your home that you are testing! If you are wanting to find out the radon levels for different floors of your home, then you will need more than one test kit. Each area you want to test needs its own radon sampler. |
Question: | Why do you ask for my test address/zip code |
Answer: | Knowing your test address is necessary for us to correct for differences in time zones between your home and our laboratory. Radon undergoes radioactive decay over time, meaning that when we receive your radon sampler in the lab, there is less radon present than when you tested in your home. We use the dates, times, and location info that you provide to locate the time zone your test was conducted in. We can then correct for time zone differences between where the test was conducted and where our lab is located! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do the kits expire |
Answer: | The test kit has no expiration date, provided that it remains sealed and is stored under normal room temperature conditions. |
Question: | Is the return postage included - or are we responsible for cost of postage to mail the tray back to the lab |
Answer: | Had to pay for return postage to have it tested! |
Question: | Is shipping included |
Answer: | Yes. Shipping is free when you buy from My Generation Toys LLC Thank you. |
Question: | what is maximum sq ft test covers |
Answer: | Generally they cover a large room or good segment of a cellar. However most importantly follow the directions. Limit the air exchange flow, isolate the area and out side air, follow compliance and testing date, time of exposure and lab test. They are time sensitive which encludes the return mailing to lab time. Do not get creative or modify test kit instructions. The kits are sold or offered free, several options. If my mind serves me I think Febuary is the month some states mail them to home owners free or a minimal charge. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Radon regulated states require that testing devices for real estate exchanges be approved by aarst or epa is this approved by either |
Answer: | Hi there and thanks so much for your question! In order for a radon monitor to be approved by the AARST you need take a high amount of radon "counts" per hour within a specific time-frame usually (48-72 hours) which are done for real estate transactions. The Wave does not meet these requirements, it is designed for very accurate long-term measurements to give you a broader understanding of what your radon exposure is over the period time and not just a snapshot. However Airthings does have a monitor that does meet these requirements, our Corentium Pro. The Corentium Pro is fully AARST-NRPP certified and used and trusted by thousands of radon mitigators and house inspectors. If you have any other questions just reach out to us on the Airthings website and you chat with us directly! Again, thank you for your question! -Tom from Airthings Support |
Question: | Is the hub required to connect with Alexa or other platforms |
Answer: | You can use the Wave in 2 ways: 1. With Bluetooth: all that is required is to download the Airthings app (iOS or Android) and the app will obtain the measurement data using Bluetooth 2. With an Airthings Hub: the Hub is connected to a power source and Ethernet. It will automatically connect to your Wave using SmartLink and keep your data always up to date so you don't have to use Bluetooth. The Wave can connect to Amazon Alexa, with or without the use of an Airthings Hub - however, the experience is enhanced with use of an Airthings Hub as the measurement data is constantly up to date. Hope this helps! |
Question: | What is the difference of gen 1 (which cost more) vs gen 2 which cost less? thanks steve |
Answer: | The difference between the Wave 1st generation and Wave 2nd generation are that the Wave 1st generation provides measurements for radon, temperature, and humidity every hour. The Wave 1st generation is also not equipped with SmartLink which allows you to connected with the Airthings Hub to allow you to always be connected to your monitor. The Wave 2nd generation is much more similar to our Wave Plus under the hood with the firmware and is compatible with the Airthings Hub. The Wave 2nd generation provides a rolling 24 hour radon measurement every hour and the temperature and humidity are updated every 5 minutes. Question: | I have a mountain cabin and have no internet, by design! Will this thing work with my smartphone w/o being also connected to the internet |
Answer: | Hi there - thanks for your question! This is the way it works: 1. you have to connect to the Wave via Bluetooth with a mobile phone or tablet. Bluetooth connections normally require you to be within approx. 30 ft of the device, and then you can view your up to date data in the app. 2. Once the data has been synced via Bluetooth and you have internet connection, the data will be further pushed to the cloud, enabling you to see your data on the online dashboard. So if you have your Wave in the cabin, you can sync via Bluetooth on your phone, and use your phone's internet connection to push to the cloud if you like! If your Wave is at your regular residence, and you want to continue monitoring while you are far away in your cabin, you should check out our new Airthings Hub, which enables your data to stay updated without the need for Bluetooth syncing :) If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected], chat with us using the Chat function on our website https://www.airthings.com/en-us/, or read more about radon and our products in our Help Center https://help.airthings.com/en/. We'll be happy to help :) All the best from Lucy at Airthings Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it detect and/ or measure hcho (formaldehyde) levels, too |
Answer: | Hi there! Thanks so much for your interest in the Wave Plus and your question! The TVOC sensor in the Wave Plus will detect formaldehyde as part of the TVOCs (total volatile organic compound) measurement but keep in mind it does not give a breakdown of each VOC in the air, but the total measured amount. If you have any other questions just reach out to our support team on the Airthings website, we'll be happy to answer any questions! -Tom from Airthings Support |
Question: | Are any gas voc's checked |
Answer: | Hey! Hey! Our TVOC sensor will indicate the total amount of gaseous chemicals in your environment. Please check out our Help Center on the Airthings website for a breakdown of VOCs. Common sources of VOCs are as follows: Candles and fires Anything that burns gives off fumes. Fireplaces and scented candles are especially harmful, so keep an eye on your levels while using them. Fragrances Mothballs, room deodorizers and perfumes—anything with a fragrance, contain chemicals that should be avoided. Cooking fumes Cooking also creates gases that can be toxic. Always use a hood fan or open a window while cooking indoors. And keep the door closed when grilling outdoors. New furniture New furniture, carpet, drapes, mattresses all contain chemicals that slowly release into the air, often for years after you bring them home. Cleaning products While cleaning with soaps, detergents, furniture polish and glass cleaners be aware of terpenes and ethanol and ventilate accordingly. Craft products Glue, paints, fabrics, wax, dyes, many craft products contain VOCs. Be sure to ventilate while using them. Children's toys Some hard plastics contain formaldehyde, and new fabrics emit toxins into the air. Look for BPA-free plastics or avoid plastics altogether, and wash toys before using them. Paints and varnishes Lacquers, paint, industrial glues, paint thinner and harsh chemicals should not be kept in the home, even when they are locked tight they emit chemicals into the air Please feel free to reach out to us via the Chat function on our website if you have any further questions or concerns :) |
Question: | Does anyone have the Wave Plus installed in the basement? I have a finished, wide open basement (no dividing walls) about 1000 square feet in area |
Answer: | I installed mine in the basement since that is where readings are typically the highest. |
Question: | does it measure PM 2.5 and |
Answer: | Hi there! Thanks for your question. Our Wave Plus doesn't measure PM particles, so it doesn't measure PM 2.5 or PM 10. The Airthings Wave Plus measures CO2 (carbon dioxide), TVOC (airborne chemicals), Radon, temperature, humidity, and air pressure. |
Product features
Radon
Radioactive gas, invisible, dangerous, found in every home. As radon levels fluctuate daily, the only way to ensure radon levels stay low is by long term radon testing.
Carbon Dioxide
An exhaled gas impacting sleep, health, and productivity. Occupancy and daily activities can increase carbon dioxide indoors, using a co2 detector can help you adjust ventilation accordingly.
Volatile Organic Compounds
Volatile organic compounds- (VOCs) are toxins found in everyday items including cleaning products, furniture and paint. Our Total VOC sensor alerts you to high levels of a long list of chemicals. To keep levels low make small adjustments like using VOC free paint or installing a VOC air purifier.
Humidity
Humidity. Moisture promotes mold while dry air can lead to cold and flu. To get the best indoor humidity level for your home, monitor daily.
Temperature
Temperature. Affects sleep patterns, mood, comfort level and alertness. A temperature sensor is a necessity for every home.
Pressure
Pressure. The weight of the air can cause headaches, joint pain and fatigue. The barometric pressure of the atmosphere changes depending on elevation and weather patterns.
Be protected.
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA approved estimates. Ensure harmful radon gas levels stay low by monitoring daily.
Breathe easy.
Know your air is free of toxins and chemicals (VOCs) found in everyday items. VOCs can cause serious health effects when you are exposed over both short and long periods of time.
Perfect balance.
Make sure humidity levels do not rise too high or fall too low. Optimum indoor humidity levels are between 30% to 59% according to the EPA. Healthy humidity levels are key to prevent mold and the spread of infectious disease.
