User questions & answers
| Question: | My entire home is equipped with BRK smoke detector (4120 B) and Carbon Monox Det (CO50120B). They need replacing. Will new BRK fit extant casings |
| Answer: | Yes all the wired Nest Protect needs is the 120V hot (black) and neutral (white) wires in the electrical box connected to the plug-in pigtail that comes with the Protect. If your house has multiple detectors now you will usually also find a red wire in the electrical box that interconnects your old detectors so that if one goes off they all sound. That wire is no longer needed with the Protect so you just cap it with a wire nut. |
| Question: | can these be connected together so if one is set off they all go off |
| Answer: | Yes, but only if you are connected to the internet and then only for the last ten days, and only if the level rises above the heads up level (which is 70ppm and rising for around an hour or a shorter period if over 150ppm). To counter what someone else's answer was - Carbon monoxide does NOT sink. It is in fact lighter than air (CO has an atomic weight of 28 versus Nitrogen (N2) which is also 28 - but marginally heavier (by 0.003 amu due to heavier isotopes), Oxygen (O2) which is 32 and Argon which is 40. However the weight is similar enough in the air in your house that it tends to distribute as a fluid and is measurable anywhere in a room; it really depends upon how air moves through the space. The levels tend to fluctuate rapidly as CO distributes and any outside air mixes in and additional CO is added. Overall, there is no perfect way to measure the CO levels with one device in one place, but this is as good as most people need. |
| Question: | How does the Alarm Latch feature "easily identify initiating alarm"? This is major problem with false alarms on my existing Kidde/Firex dual alarms |
| Answer: | I just checked this for you. I unplugged my wifi router and started a test. All detectors alarmed as expected. So, yes, the system works even without active wifi. |
| Question: | Can a BRK Model 92120B smoke detector directly plug in and replace an old BRK Model 4120B smoke detector (without an adapter |
| Answer: | I think very few here understand the question. National code requires interconnected smoke detectors as of 2004, there is an extra wire in the circuit and all smoke detectors are on that wire for 'signal'. When one alarms they should ALL alarm. If I am reading the answers correctly, NEST does not comply with the signal wire. However, it looks like it does set up its own wireless network to act like they are all interconnected. To be honest, after paying for the extra wire behind the wall, why would I want to by 6-8 nests at $100 each when the originals are 20-30 each? This way there is one smart point to notify if any detector is going off. Nests way 6-9 smoke detectors, 6-8 login, 6-8 ip address. Ugh, what a nightmare! |

User questions & answers
| Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
| Answer: | Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off. |
| Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
| Answer: | Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector. |
| Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
| Answer: | Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D. |
| Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
| Answer: | Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this. |
| Question: | When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to |
| Answer: | I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM. |
| Question: | does it come with the hardwire connector |
| Answer: | Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery |
| Question: | Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery |
| Answer: | I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information. |
| Question: | How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light |
| Answer: | The back cover comes off install battery and replace |
Product features
Always Alert

User questions & answers
| Question: | How often do these need to be replaced because of "end of life" warning? I feel like we are constantly replacing them and don't know what's normal |
| Answer: | The installation instructions for this unit notes that it can be wall mounted, "If allowed by local building codes," (check with your Buildings Department - since several codes are in use in various localities) - with the proviso that the top of the mounted unit must be between "4 inches and 8 inches" below the wall-ceiling meeting, to avoid dead air space. |
| Question: | Will this First Alert unit plug into my existing BRK 3-wire pigtail connector, or do I have to buy a BRK unit? Thank you |
| Answer: | Off-white. |
| Question: | Does anyone know if this smoke/carbon monoxide alarm is compatible with a house full of First Alert 9120Bs (smoke only)? Want them all connected |
| Answer: | Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association. |
| Question: | I have Model No. SC7010BV. Is the same replacement without the "V |
| Answer: | The beep is effective. It always seems to start in the middle of the night. I twist the unit off the ceiling and do a battery swap and have it back on the ceiling in less than a minute, craw back into bed before really waking up. It's not a pain to replace the batteries, it's very easy. Simply slide the tray out and pop new ones in. The batteries fit snuggly in the compartment and there are tabs that allow you to push the batteries out by applying pressure with your thumbs from the back side. There is an optional screw hole to make the battery compartment tamper resistant. This prevents people from easily taking the batteries to power their remote controls or whatever. When fire marshals inspect fire related deaths it's not uncommon to find the smoke and fire detectors had no batteries installed. This simple, optional, screw might seem like "a pain" to some people, but it's an easy way to save your life. This is a great unit. I have 6 in my house and I highly recommend them to everyone. |

User questions & answers
| Question: | If one alarm goes off do all of them go off at the same time |
| Answer: | My installation has nine (9) 9120B alarms and they all sound once one goes off. Great feature. In-wall wiring interconnects all the alarms; I don't know what options there are for retrofitting a house without the in-wall wiring. The manufacturer recommends weekly testing where you press the self-test button on each alarm for a few seconds. That is a good way to validate that they all go off when you test each one. Best to do this when no one else is in the house; it gets pretty loud. |
| Question: | Is the 9120b the same as the 4120b and the same bracket. Mine plugs oin to the house electric system |
| Answer: | My 4120b plug into the house elec. |
| Question: | What is the date of manufacture |
| Answer: | The units I received were manufactured in March of 2014, so they were only 3 months old in the box when I installed them. Also, unlike the previous detectors I replaced, there was no text indicating they need to be replaced after ten years use. Materials on the new model must have improved. |
| Question: | Will the 9120b fit the housing and wiring of prior installed sc9120b (smoke and carbon monoxide detector)? do not need the co detector anymore |
| Answer: | they do not fit the existing brackets. you have to put up new brackets...BUT the screw holes are the same so the new ones can be screwed in on the same spot! |

Product description
While all smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke, different sensing technologies react differently to certain types of fires. The fist alert Sa3210 dual sensor ten year alarm makes use of both ionization and photoelectric sensors to offer the earliest possible warning-regardlesss of the type of fire. Sometimes a fire can smolder for hours before erupting into flames. Photoelectric sensing technology is more sensitive than ionization sensing technology at detecting these sorts of smoldering fires, like those caused by cigarettes burning in couches or bedding. Other fires erupt into flames quickly, like kitchen grease fires or fires fueled by paper burning in a wastebasket. Ionization sensing technology is generally more sensitive than photoelectric sensing technology at detecting these sorts of flaming fires. User questions & answers
| Question: | Can this unit be side wall mounted or is it the standard top of ceiling |
| Question: | The spec sheet says color is gray - are they gray or white |
| Answer: | You get 5 flashing lights when the battery is at its 10 year end. (Not the strobe) just like a usual battery with a beeping sound. You also cannot test the alarm when the battery is low. We had a brand new one do this when we tried to install it the first time. The company replaced no problem. |
| Question: | Does this alarm meet the Underwriters Laboratories Standard |
| Answer: | If the alarms are wired in series, the light (and sound) on all units are activated whenever there is a triggering event (smoke or CO2) on any unit. |
| Question: | Does the unit beep to tell you that the battery is running low |
| Answer: | Believe so |

User questions & answers
| Question: | What is the date of the units manufacture on the back of the case |
| Answer: | I had the same problem. If you push the sensor hard into the base and twist it should work. As a last resort use double sided foam tape. |
| Question: | my carbon monoxide went off and I fixed the gas leak. does the red light stay on when it is reset |
| Question: | i need to replace my brk co5120b model...will the co5120bn have the same contector ..or can i plug the co5120b contector to the back of the co5120bn |
| Answer: | Off-white. |
| Question: | Unfortunately the sensor does not stay to the base. Do not why. I might have wrong piece shipped. Wish i could return |
| Answer: | Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association. |

Product description
The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
| Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
| Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
| Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
| Answer: | No |
| Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
| Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
| Question: | How long do batteries last |
| Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |

User questions & answers
| Question: | Each unit has built-in alarm Sound |
| Answer: | Yes. Being a single stage urethane, I'd recommend spraying with a larger nozzle, like a 1.8. Let it heal up for at least a few days, then wet sand with progressively finer grits. I think if you follow this with a buffer and Meguiars buffing compounds, you'll be pleased with the finished product. This paint is decent for an economical finish. Good luck and hope this helped. |
| Question: | my heat alarma have been going off in all three apartments of my house every 15 min, they stop after 4-5 sec .There is no problem and the smoke alarms are only six months old |
| Answer: | T-Rex primer works very well |
| Question: | Does this interconnect with other alarms made by First Alert |
| Answer: | Depending on color your going over you will probably need two gals |
| Question: | My attic gets very hot in summer (in Dallas). If the outdoor temp is 108 attic could be close to 135 I assume. Will the slow rate of rise prevent the alarm from sounding |
| Answer: | No this is acrylic enamel they do sell lacquer as well though. |

The First Alert SA511CN2-3ST Interconnected Wireless Smoke Alarm with Voice Location features an 85-decibel siren and voice alarm that tells you where the danger is located. A photoelectric sensor detects smoke while minimizing false alarms from cooking or shower steam. Interconnected smoke detectors in different locations are designed to work together, with one alarm triggering the other alarm during a fire, helping to provide the earliest warning for your family.
From the Manufacturer
In the event of a fire every second counts. If a fire were to begin in your basement and the alarm there sounded, you may not hear it right away if you're sound asleep two floors up. With traditional battery-operated alarms, you lose valuable time waiting for the smoke to rise to another alarm, on another level, before the alarm on your floor sounds. But with First Alert ONELINK alarms, if one detects danger, they all sound. This can alert you sooner, and it increases your chances of getting out safely. Until now, alarms that could signal each other were only available in homes with hardwired alarms requiring installation from an electrician. But First Alert ONELINK alarms communicate without wires. ONE Link-with Voice Location Smoke alarm is programmable with up to 11 locations in your home - when alarm sounds it will tell you the location of the smoke. The wireless feature allows multiple alarms to talk to each other - when one alarm sounds, they all sound. The wireless network operates on 914 MHZ 3 channels and will not interfere with other electronics. The ONELINK smoke alarms uses photoelectric sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The AA batteries are easy to install in the convenient pullout battery drawer. Two AA batteries included.
- Help keep your family safe with these battery operated smoke alarms that wirelessly interconnect with each other and other First Alert enabled alarms so that all sound when one is activated, creating a home safety network; comes in a pack of 2 alarms
- Voice alarm with 11 programmable locations tells you where the danger is so you can choose the best evacuation route; Loud, 85-decibel siren sounds to alert you to danger
- Equipped with photoelectric smoke sensor optimized to detect larger smoke particles produced by smoldering fires; Helps minimize the number of false alarms
- Battery powered alarm requires no rewiring for installation and provides continued monitoring even if there's a power failure; use with Polaroid AA batteries for best results
- Wirelessly connect upto 18 first alert enabled alarms for the maximum in whole home protection; includes test/silence button, low battery warning, end of life timer
- First Alert has been the most trusted brand in home safety since launching the first residential smoke alarm in 1958 (Based on a First Alert Brand Trust Survey in February 2018)
User questions & answers
| Question: | is the wireless signal constant or only during an alarm |
| Answer: | No, they are battery operated. The 9 volt batteries are included with the alarms. |
| Question: | Can i pair these smoke detectors with the co/smoke detectors of the same brand (firstalert). i don't need everywhere co detectors which cost more |
| Answer: | No, they are battery operated. The 9 volt batteries are included with the alarms. |
| Question: | What is the max distance the units can be apart and still communicate with each other |
| Answer: | I bought one in 2012. I have changed the batteries once, about five years ago. Thought it was due for a change now but it has reached the end of its ten-year "life" after seven years. To be fair, the sticker indicates it was manufactured in April of 2010, so it was on a shelf for two years, making it nine years old. |
| Question: | If i buy three of these double packs will they all connect |
| Answer: | I’m using these to replace the wired units from the same manufacturer. They fit the same mount. Two units never worked right, and a third less than seven years old just stopped working. I don’t know if they were wired properly or not to begin with, so I’m going with these ones. |

Carbon monoxide alarms can be placed anywhere, not just the ceiling or high on a wall. They should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.
Fire Extinguishers
Keep in the kitchen and garage, but make sure to have the right grade for the type of fire that might occur.
Escape Ladders
Have at least one if your home has more than one story. Each room needs 2 escape routes; in most bedrooms it's the window, so have a ladder nearby.
