Question:	My entire home is equipped with BRK smoke detector (4120 B) and Carbon Monox Det (CO50120B). They need replacing. Will new BRK fit extant casings
Answer:	Yes all the wired Nest Protect needs is the 120V hot (black) and neutral (white) wires in the electrical box connected to the plug-in pigtail that comes with the Protect. If your house has multiple detectors now you will usually also find a red wire in the electrical box that interconnects your old detectors so that if one goes off they all sound. That wire is no longer needed with the Protect so you just cap it with a wire nut.
Question:	can these be connected together so if one is set off they all go off
Answer:	Yes, but only if you are connected to the internet and then only for the last ten days, and only if the level rises above the heads up level (which is 70ppm and rising for around an hour or a shorter period if over 150ppm). To counter what someone else's answer was - Carbon monoxide does NOT sink. It is in fact lighter than air (CO has an atomic weight of 28 versus Nitrogen (N2) which is also 28 - but marginally heavier (by 0.003 amu due to heavier isotopes), Oxygen (O2) which is 32 and Argon which is 40. However the weight is similar enough in the air in your house that it tends to distribute as a fluid and is measurable anywhere in a room; it really depends upon how air moves through the space. The levels tend to fluctuate rapidly as CO distributes and any outside air mixes in and additional CO is added. Overall, there is no perfect way to measure the CO levels with one device in one place, but this is as good as most people need.
Question:	How does the Alarm Latch feature "easily identify initiating alarm"? This is major problem with false alarms on my existing Kidde/Firex dual alarms
Answer:	I just checked this for you. I unplugged my wifi router and started a test. All detectors alarmed as expected. So, yes, the system works even without active wifi.
Question:	Can a BRK Model 92120B smoke detector directly plug in and replace an old BRK Model 4120B smoke detector (without an adapter
Answer:	I think very few here understand the question. National code requires interconnected smoke detectors as of 2004, there is an extra wire in the circuit and all smoke detectors are on that wire for 'signal'. When one alarms they should ALL alarm. If I am reading the answers correctly, NEST does not comply with the signal wire. However, it looks like it does set up its own wireless network to act like they are all interconnected. To be honest, after paying for the extra wire behind the wall, why would I want to by 6-8 nests at $100 each when the originals are 20-30 each? This way there is one smart point to notify if any detector is going off. Nests way 6-9 smoke detectors, 6-8 login, 6-8 ip address. Ugh, what a nightmare!

Question:	What is the manufacture date on these items
Answer:	Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off.
Question:	If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert

Answer:	Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this.

Answer:	The installation instructions for this unit notes that it can be wall mounted, "If allowed by local building codes," (check with your Buildings Department - since several codes are in use in various localities) - with the proviso that the top of the mounted unit must be between "4 inches and 8 inches" below the wall-ceiling meeting, to avoid dead air space.

Answer:	The beep is effective. It always seems to start in the middle of the night. I twist the unit off the ceiling and do a battery swap and have it back on the ceiling in less than a minute, craw back into bed before really waking up. It's not a pain to replace the batteries, it's very easy. Simply slide the tray out and pop new ones in. The batteries fit snuggly in the compartment and there are tabs that allow you to push the batteries out by applying pressure with your thumbs from the back side. There is an optional screw hole to make the battery compartment tamper resistant. This prevents people from easily taking the batteries to power their remote controls or whatever. When fire marshals inspect fire related deaths it's not uncommon to find the smoke and fire detectors had no batteries installed. This simple, optional, screw might seem like "a pain" to some people, but it's an easy way to save your life. This is a great unit. I have 6 in my house and I highly recommend them to everyone.

Answer:	My installation has nine (9) 9120B alarms and they all sound once one goes off. Great feature. In-wall wiring interconnects all the alarms; I don't know what options there are for retrofitting a house without the in-wall wiring. The manufacturer recommends weekly testing where you press the self-test button on each alarm for a few seconds. That is a good way to validate that they all go off when you test each one. Best to do this when no one else is in the house; it gets pretty loud.

Answer:	The units I received were manufactured in March of 2014, so they were only 3 months old in the box when I installed them. Also, unlike the previous detectors I replaced, there was no text indicating they need to be replaced after ten years use. Materials on the new model must have improved.

Answer:	They are white with a red plastic dust cover. The red plastic dust cover is for use when you are painting or remodeling to prevent particulates from entering alarm and setting it off.

Question:	I have 20 year old First Alert alarms with incompatible wiring. Does this unit come with a new wiring harness to connect to the AC line
Answer:	Yes, this comes with a 3 wire harness that gets hard wired to your existing electrical and connects to the back of the fire alarm. Black and white for power and red to link alarms together. It does not include any adapters so you will need to disconnect the power and replace the existing harness with the one included with the alarm.

Question:	Can this unit be side wall mounted or is it the standard top of ceiling
Answer:	The beep is effective. It always seems to start in the middle of the night. I twist the unit off the ceiling and do a battery swap and have it back on the ceiling in less than a minute, craw back into bed before really waking up. It's not a pain to replace the batteries, it's very easy. Simply slide the tray out and pop new ones in. The batteries fit snuggly in the compartment and there are tabs that allow you to push the batteries out by applying pressure with your thumbs from the back side. There is an optional screw hole to make the battery compartment tamper resistant. This prevents people from easily taking the batteries to power their remote controls or whatever. When fire marshals inspect fire related deaths it's not uncommon to find the smoke and fire detectors had no batteries installed. This simple, optional, screw might seem like "a pain" to some people, but it's an easy way to save your life. This is a great unit. I have 6 in my house and I highly recommend them to everyone.

Answer:	You get 5 flashing lights when the battery is at its 10 year end. (Not the strobe) just like a usual battery with a beeping sound. You also cannot test the alarm when the battery is low. Answer:	The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.

Answer:	Yes. Being a single stage urethane, I'd recommend spraying with a larger nozzle, like a 1.8. Let it heal up for at least a few days, then wet sand with progressively finer grits. I think if you follow this with a buffer and Meguiars buffing compounds, you'll be pleased with the finished product. This paint is decent for an economical finish. Good luck and hope this helped.

Question:	We have an enclosed garage that is more of a "play room." Can I install this unit in a garage? The Kiddie Alarms state you can't use them in a garag
Answer:	I cannot plug mine in anymore it immediately alerts “GAS”. Very disappointing. It’s only a couple years old. I would expect for his price they last longer and/or have a better return policy.
Question:	Has anyone had false alarms? My alarm which is s couple. Of years. Old went off saying GAS but there was no trace of gas in the house
Answer:	I had a major lp gas leak in the gas line inside my walls and this unit never registered anything. Don't waste your money. Fortunately, I believed what I thought I smelled and called the gas company.
Question:	Does this unit works for LP propane gas leak
Answer:	No. But the company denies there is a problem. If your unit is within the warranty period, they will replace it with another one that drains the battery. Then they deny there is a problem.
Question:	Has anyone found out why this detector drains the battery within hours even if it's a brand new battery and it's plugged into the wall

Question:	What is the max distance the units can be apart and still communicate with each other
Answer:	I bought one in 2012. I have changed the batteries once, about five years ago. Thought it was due for a change now but it has reached the end of its ten-year "life" after seven years. To be fair, the sticker indicates it was manufactured in April of 2010, so it was on a shelf for two years, making it nine years old.
Question:	If i buy three of these double packs will they all connect
Answer:	I’m using these to replace the wired units from the same manufacturer. They fit the same mount. Two units never worked right, and a third less than seven years old just stopped working. I don’t know if they were wired properly or not to begin with, so I’m going with these ones.

Smoke Alarms

Place at least 10 feet from kitchen/stove, and on the ceiling or high on a wall, no more than 10 inches from top.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon monoxide alarms can be placed anywhere, not just the ceiling or high on a wall. They should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.

Fire Extinguishers

Keep in the kitchen and garage, but make sure to have the right grade for the type of fire that might occur.

Escape Ladders

Have at least one if your home has more than one story. Each room needs 2 escape routes; in most bedrooms it's the window, so have a ladder nearby.
