14 best batteries for smoke detectors
Batteries for smoke detectors are a critical component of fire safety in residential and commercial buildings. Smoke detectors are designed to provide early warning in the event of a fire by detecting smoke or other signs of combustion. Here's what you should know about batteries for smoke detectors:
Battery Types: Smoke detectors typically use one of two types of batteries: alkaline batteries or lithium batteries. Alkaline batteries are commonly used in most residential smoke detectors, while lithium batteries are often found in higher-end models.
Battery Lifespan: The lifespan of the batteries in a smoke detector can vary depending on the type of battery and the brand of the smoke detector. Alkaline batteries typically need to be replaced every 6-12 months, while lithium batteries can last up to 10 years.
Low Battery Warning: Smoke detectors are equipped with a low battery warning feature. When the battery voltage drops to a certain level, the detector will emit a periodic chirping sound to alert homeowners that it's time to replace the battery.
Testing: It's essential to regularly test your smoke detectors to ensure they are functioning correctly. Most smoke detectors have a "test" button that you can press to check if the alarm sounds properly. You should test your smoke detectors at least once a month.
Battery Replacement: When replacing the batteries in a smoke detector, always use the recommended battery type specified by the manufacturer. Typically, a 9-volt battery is used in most standard smoke detectors, but some models may use AA or AAA batteries.
Maintenance: Aside from changing the batteries, smoke detectors should be kept clean and free from dust and debris. Periodically vacuuming or dusting the unit can help ensure it functions correctly.
Interconnected Alarms: In many modern homes, smoke detectors are interconnected, meaning if one alarm detects smoke, all alarms in the house will sound. This enhances fire safety and ensures that everyone in the house is alerted to the danger.
Backup Power: Some smoke detectors come equipped with backup power sources, such as a rechargeable battery or hardwired connections to the electrical system. These features can provide added protection in case the primary battery fails.
Regulations and Standards: Smoke detectors are subject to various regulations and standards depending on your location. It's important to ensure that your smoke detectors comply with local building codes and safety standards.
In conclusion, smoke detectors are a crucial component of fire safety in any home or building, and properly maintaining the batteries in these devices is essential to their effectiveness. Regular testing, proper battery replacement, and adherence to safety standards are essential steps in ensuring that your smoke detectors provide the early warning needed to protect lives and property in the event of a fire.

User questions & answers
Question: | MN1604 comes with 2 different shapes of negative terminal(one hexagonal, one square or octagonal) what are the differences |
Answer: | The date is very small on the bottom of the battery. Just received a box of 8, expiration 02/2025. |
Question: | Where are these batteries made |
Answer: | 9V alkaline batteries are meant for low current applications. If subjected to high current they will suffer voltage depression (aka droop) below the typical target range needed for a 9V battery. In other words try to keep the current under 80mA unless you just don't care about voltage droop and even then, you might be better off with a 4 x AA battery and a boost circuit to achieve the target voltage if the current is much over 150mA. |
Question: | When is the expiration date on these items |
Answer: | In my review (http://www.amazon.com/review/RNAU5AWNID6IA/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm) I provided detailed measurements and pictures of the batteries and side by side comparisons. The AmazonBasics and a Utilitech "heavy duty" battery, neither of which fit my CO detector, were both right about 0.6mm longer and 0.6mm fatter than a standard Duracell battery which did fit my CO detector. It seems these are the "big" 9v's (Possibly "Heavy duty"?). They do fit in my smoke detectors, but it really comes down to whether you have a cramped battery compartment or one that does weird things to connect the battery. You should probably pass if that's the case or if you've had issues installing your current batteries. |
Question: | What is the expiration date on the 9V 4-pack |
Answer: | Tilt battery in from top down. Works with Dollar General 9 volts. Jon from Hector,MN. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the unit that was recalled for not detecting smoke |
Answer: | so after fighting with it, i believe the answer might be smoke alarms? the octagonal shape with sides that are parallel to the battery case appear to fit into smoke alarms while the hexagonal (also on Energizer) do not. particularly First Alert/Intertek model SC9120B |
Question: | how long do the batteries last |
Answer: | Duracell components and batteries are produced at several locations in the U.S. and abroad, including Europe and China. If you have additional questions please contact our Customer Relations team at 800-551-2355 between the hours of 9am and 6pm EST. |
Question: | Why can't this be shipped to area code |
Answer: | Usually a 2 year lifespan from the date of manufacture. I have always had good luck with Duracell lasting the longest, more than the bunny claims! |
Question: | does it have a siliene button |
Answer: | It's the date usually found on the btry. On my last purchase of Duracell 9v coppertop btry's MAR 2015 is printed on the btry. The package, while it has no good to date on it says it is guaranteed fresh for 5 years. On this packaging you can not see a good to date on it until you open it and look at the btry. Therefore since it is gtd for 5 years I believe the manufacture date was 2010. Using a top rated btry like Duracell we change smoke alarm btrys every 2 years contrary to the suggested 1 year time frame of replacement. We also check the alarm function every month. We also use these 9v btry's in our garage door openers. Hope this answers your question. LR |

Product description
The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |
Product description
70-Percent of all home fire deaths occur in homes with no alarms or no working alarms, and nearly one quarter of smoke alarms in reported fires are not working. Battery operated Ionization smoke alarms are designed to help protect you and your family from the dangers of fire. This model is powered by a 9V battery, providing continuous protection, even during power outages. The tamper resist feature makes your smoke alarm somewhat tamper resistant. Install UL listed smoke alarms on every floor of your home, in hallways, inside bedrooms and outside of sleeping areas. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with fast flaming fires) sooner than Photoelectric alarms. Studies show both types will effectively detect either type of fire. For optimal protection, install both smoke alarm technologies in your home.
- Test button checks horn, battery and alarm circuitry
- Low battery indicator warns when battery needs replacement
- Tamper resist locking pin ¿ helps deter theft or tampering
- Battery operated, 9 Volt battery included (best with Polaroid 9 Volt batteries)
- Kidde’s smoke alarms meet the requirements of Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent facility that tests products for compliance with widely-accepted safety standards
User questions & answers
Question: | What is the warranty period? Typically this is stated on the box |
Answer: | I was wondering the same thing! same with the 4 pack.. buy 4 individually for 119$ OR buy a 4 pack for 148$ huh? |
Question: | Can these be used with just the batteries without hardwiring |
Answer: | Sometimes farts can set these alarms off accidentally. If you are not in the room but have pets then your pets might be the ones farting and setting off the alarm. |
Question: | when was this item manufacturer |
Answer: | bought mine in Dec2017. It says 7 year warranty on this unit, so I'll see. Many CO detectors are only 5 yrs, but you can find higher quality ones (not avail on Amazon) that are good for 10 yrs and have dual sealed non-replaceable batteries (so install and forget for a decade). I bought this because it does both CO & smoke. I have a CO detector by our bedrooms that displays CO readings in real time above 11ppm, which is superior to this. Even low levels of CO is hazardous, and govt regs specify an alarm to sound only if >30ppm, not lower levels. |
Question: | is the internal battery replaceable ... or is this a "throw-away after the battery dies" unit |
Answer: | After about a year the batteries were still working fine. That said, I'm not sure how long they'll actually last because, for SAFETY SAKE, it is recommended you replace batteries ONCE A YEAR regardless if they're still working or not. I change mine every fall around Daylight Savings Time. (I keep the partially used up batteries, in a marked "Used" baggie, for toys or other odd uses; but never for smoke alarms!) Hope this helps. |

Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home. Great for Homes and Rental Properties This tamper-free alarm prevents battery or alarm removal, eliminating worry about unauthorized battery removal or unauthorized deactivation of the alarm. Also, this alarm is a good choice for rental properties and high-density dwellings, as its sealed tamper-free design prevents theft, while also reducing labor and material costs. This helps to ensure that the property and inhabitants are protected by a fully operational alarm. Easy to Install with Self Activation The innovative automatic activation of this alarm is unlike any other smoke alarm design. The alarm will automatically activate when it is attached to the mounting bracket; there are no pull tabs and no switches--everything is automatic. At the end of the alarm life, the unit will chirp, indicating the alarm is in need of replacement. You can use a simple tool, such as a screwdriver, to deactivate the unit, stopping the low-battery chirp and making the alarm safe for disposal. The sealed-in board-mounted batteries will power the unit for its complete 10-year life. No replacement batteries will ever be needed. Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience By pressing the smoke alarm's Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This alarm's Smart Hush feature has the capability of temporarily desensitizing the alarm circuit for up to eight minutes. This feature is to be used only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the alarm. The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the Test/Hush button on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately. The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds every eight seconds while in Hush mode. This indicates that the alarm is in a temporarily desensitized condition. Additionally, the smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately eight minutes and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are still present. Smart Hush can be used repeatedly until the air has been cleared of the condition causing the alarm. Pushing the Test/Hush button on the alarm will end the hush period. Power Outage Protection, Indicator LED, and Test Feature A 10-year sealed lithium battery powers this alarm, providing continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards even during power outages. Because a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 40 to 45 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm contains a Test/Reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn. The unit measures just 5.6 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches in depth, and it features a neutral, white finish. This smoke alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 10-year limited warranty. User questions & answers
Question: | The product description clearly reads these are energizer max batteries, yet the picture shows the regular energizer batteries. which are they |
Answer: | Hi, this was 6 months ago, so if I recall correctly it was better for me to purchase individually at the time at the price of $18.67ea. for 6. No one was selling the packaged amount I needed. So the answer is one per box. Still not a bad price for a combo alarm with the features it has and lithium. |
Question: | Are this batteries Flame Proof |
Answer: | low blinking light |
Question: | Where are these energizer e522 max 9v batteries made please |
Answer: | I don't see why not . Just be sure you mount the ring so you can screw on and off the main unit. You might even try heavy duty sticky back Velcro. |
Question: | What is the expiration date as of Aug |
Answer: | NO -- this is ionization-only!!! Beware two VERY SIMILAR Kidde model numbers. This specific model (i9010) is listed on the Kidde site as ionization-sensor only, NOT dual, despite other postings on this page. Unfortunately, I bought 3 units of this i9010, which I will now throw away: $70-ish bucks down the drain because I was lazy and mistook it for the PI9010. I think that in Kidde-model-numbering-language, “iXXXX” means “ionization”, and “PIXXXX” means “photoelectric AND ionization, aka dual-sensor”. “Dual sensor” is important: they’re better at detecting fires, which is the whole point. A prominent, independent, consumer produCt testing oRganization in 2018 rated smoke detectors for how well they actually detect fires, and the ONLY type they recommend is DUAL-sensor. That's what I want. If you need a battery-powered alarm, I recommend the First Alert SA3210. (If you can use hard-wired units, do so: there are several choices, and they require less maintenance.) The First Alert SA3210 is dual-sensor, and has a 10-year battery. Downside: it’s more expensive, but that’s what I’m buying. The SA3210’s UPC is 29054014665, per manufacturer’s site. The Kidde PI9010 is dual-sensor, with 9 volt battery, which needs changing. The First Alert SA320 is dual-sensor, with 9 volt battery, which needs changing. Separate item I learned along the way: I do not want a combination (smoke+CO) alarm. Carbon monoxide does not move like smoke moves. Smoke detectors should be up on the ceiling, but since CO is virtually the same density as room air, I will put the CO alarms closer to the elevation of a sleeping person’s head. |
- 10-Year Battery & 10-Year Sensor: This smoke and carbon monoxide alarm provides 10 years of continuous power with a built-in lithium battery, saving on energy while remaining eco-friendly; saves you from constantly having to change batteries; an end-of-life signal will let you know when it's time to replace the unit for safety
- Practical LCD Display: Clearly indicates real-time carbon monoxide (CO) concentration in the surrounding air, as well as the remaining battery life and working status of the alarm; if a CO concentration of 30-999 ppm exists for a certain time period, the screen will be backlit blue, and the LED indicator will flash red 4 times every 5.8 seconds
- 2-in-1 Accurate, Reliable & Highly Sensitive Alarm: Equipped with both photoelectric smoke sensor and electrochemical CO sensor that work independently of each other; every second counts; detects both fast and slow-burning fires, and instantly notifies you when dangerous smoke or CO concentration is detected while minimizing false alarms; provides the ultimate protection from 2 deadly threats, all contained in 1 unit
- Simple to Use: Test/Silence button enables you to test the alarm weekly, and to easily silence the alarm when false alarms occur; malfunction and low battery warnings allow you to easily know the working status of the alarm; in case of an emergency, an alarm tone of over 85 dB will sound throughout your entire home, instantly alerting the entire household, even those in sleep
- Quick & Easy Installation with Guaranteed Quality: Requires no rewiring; easy to mount on any wall or ceiling with the included mounting bracket, screws and anchor plugs; certified to meet the UL 217 & UL 2034 safety standards for your peace of mind and absolute confidence in our product
User questions & answers

Product description
The First Alert SA511CN2-3ST Interconnected Wireless Smoke Alarm with Voice Location features an 85-decibel siren and voice alarm that tells you where the danger is located. A photoelectric sensor detects smoke while minimizing false alarms from cooking or shower steam. Interconnected smoke detectors in different locations are designed to work together, with one alarm triggering the other alarm during a fire, helping to provide the earliest warning for your family.
From the Manufacturer
In the event of a fire every second counts. If a fire were to begin in your basement and the alarm there sounded, you may not hear it right away if you're sound asleep two floors up. With traditional battery-operated alarms, you lose valuable time waiting for the smoke to rise to another alarm, on another level, before the alarm on your floor sounds. But with First Alert ONELINK alarms, if one detects danger, they all sound. This can alert you sooner, and it increases your chances of getting out safely. Until now, alarms that could signal each other were only available in homes with hardwired alarms requiring installation from an electrician. But First Alert ONELINK alarms communicate without wires. ONE Link-with Voice Location Smoke alarm is programmable with up to 11 locations in your home - when alarm sounds it will tell you the location of the smoke. The wireless feature allows multiple alarms to talk to each other - when one alarm sounds, they all sound. The wireless network operates on 914 MHZ 3 channels and will not interfere with other electronics. The ONELINK smoke alarms uses photoelectric sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The AA batteries are easy to install in the convenient pullout battery drawer. Two AA batteries included.
- Help keep your family safe with these battery operated smoke alarms that wirelessly interconnect with each other and other First Alert enabled alarms so that all sound when one is activated, creating a home safety network; comes in a pack of 2 alarms
- Voice alarm with 11 programmable locations tells you where the danger is so you can choose the best evacuation route; Loud, 85-decibel siren sounds to alert you to danger
- Equipped with photoelectric smoke sensor optimized to detect larger smoke particles produced by smoldering fires; Helps minimize the number of false alarms
- Battery powered alarm requires no rewiring for installation and provides continued monitoring even if there's a power failure; use with Polaroid AA batteries for best results
- Wirelessly connect upto 18 first alert enabled alarms for the maximum in whole home protection; includes test/silence button, low battery warning, end of life timer
- First Alert has been the most trusted brand in home safety since launching the first residential smoke alarm in 1958 (Based on a First Alert Brand Trust Survey in February 2018)
User questions & answers
Question: | is the wireless signal constant or only during an alarm |
Answer: | No, they are battery operated. The 9 volt batteries are included with the alarms. |
Question: | Can i pair these smoke detectors with the co/smoke detectors of the same brand (firstalert). i don't need everywhere co detectors which cost more |
Answer: | No, they are battery operated. The 9 volt batteries are included with the alarms. |
Question: | What is the max distance the units can be apart and still communicate with each other |
Answer: | I bought one in 2012. I have changed the batteries once, about five years ago. Thought it was due for a change now but it has reached the end of its ten-year "life" after seven years. To be fair, the sticker indicates it was manufactured in April of 2010, so it was on a shelf for two years, making it nine years old. |
Question: | If i buy three of these double packs will they all connect |
Answer: | I’m using these to replace the wired units from the same manufacturer. They fit the same mount. Two units never worked right, and a third less than seven years old just stopped working. I don’t know if they were wired properly or not to begin with, so I’m going with these ones. |
Product features
Smoke Alarms
Place at least 10 feet from kitchen/stove, and on the ceiling or high on a wall, no more than 10 inches from top.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Carbon monoxide alarms can be placed anywhere, not just the ceiling or high on a wall. They should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.
Fire Extinguishers
Keep in the kitchen and garage, but make sure to have the right grade for the type of fire that might occur.
Escape Ladders
Have at least one if your home has more than one story. Each room needs 2 escape routes; in most bedrooms it's the window, so have a ladder nearby.
