12 best smoke detectors

Smoke detectors are essential devices designed to detect the presence of smoke, indicating the potential outbreak of a fire. They play a crucial role in fire safety and can save lives by providing early warnings. Here is what you should know about smoke detectors:

  1. Purpose: Smoke detectors are primarily used to alert individuals to the presence of smoke, which may indicate the onset of a fire. Early detection allows people to evacuate the building and call emergency services, potentially preventing injuries and property damage.

  2. Types of Smoke Detectors:

    • Ionization Smoke Detectors: These detectors contain a small amount of radioactive material and are sensitive to the smoke produced by fast-burning, flaming fires.
    • Photoelectric Smoke Detectors: Photoelectric detectors use a light beam and a light sensor to detect the presence of smoke particles. They are more effective at detecting smoldering fires.
    • Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Some detectors are designed to detect both smoke and dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO). These are important for protecting against both fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  3. Placement: Proper placement of smoke detectors is crucial for their effectiveness. They should be installed on every level of a home or building, inside each bedroom, and in hallways leading to sleeping areas.Mount detectors on the ceiling or high on walls, as smoke rises.

  4. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure that smoke detectors are functioning correctly. This includes testing the detectors monthly, replacing batteries as needed (for battery-operated models), and cleaning the detectors to prevent dust and debris buildup.

  5. Interconnected Detectors: Interconnected smoke detectors are wired together so that when one detector detects smoke, all alarms in the interconnected system will sound. This provides earlier warnings throughout a building and is especially important in larger homes.

  6. Carbon Monoxide Detection: Combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are crucial for detecting both fire and the odorless, deadly gas carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can be produced by malfunctioning heating systems, stoves, or vehicles in enclosed spaces.

  7. Legal Requirements: Many jurisdictions have laws or building codes that require the installation of smoke detectors in residential and commercial buildings. Compliance with these regulations is essential for safety and may be enforced during building inspections.

  8. False Alarms: Smoke detectors can occasionally trigger false alarms due to cooking smoke or steam. To reduce false alarms, consider installing detectors away from the kitchen or using a separate heat detector in that area.

  9. Emergency Response: When a smoke detector sounds, it is essential to follow a predetermined evacuation plan and contact emergency services immediately.

In summary, smoke detectors are critical devices for fire safety, designed to detect the presence of smoke and provide early warnings to occupants of a building. Regular maintenance, proper placement, and compliance with local regulations are essential for their effective use in protecting lives and property. Combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors offer added safety by detecting both fire and carbon monoxide.

First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarm | Battery Operated, SCO5CN

FIRST ALERT

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers

Question: pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious
Answer: I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit.
Question: Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops
Answer: No
Question: I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago
Answer: The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Question: How long do batteries last
Answer: Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the unit that was recalled for not detecting smoke
Answer: so after fighting with it, i believe the answer might be smoke alarms? the octagonal shape with sides that are parallel to the battery case appear to fit into smoke alarms while the hexagonal (also on Energizer) do not. particularly First Alert/Intertek model SC9120B
Question: how long do the batteries last
Answer: Duracell components and batteries are produced at several locations in the U.S. and abroad, including Europe and China. If you have additional questions please contact our Customer Relations team at 800-551-2355 between the hours of 9am and 6pm EST.
Question: Why can't this be shipped to area code
Answer: Usually a 2 year lifespan from the date of manufacture. I have always had good luck with Duracell lasting the longest, more than the bunny claims!
Question: does it have a siliene button
Answer: It's the date usually found on the btry. On my last purchase of Duracell 9v coppertop btry's MAR 2015 is printed on the btry. The package, while it has no good to date on it says it is guaranteed fresh for 5 years. On this packaging you can not see a good to date on it until you open it and look at the btry. Therefore since it is gtd for 5 years I believe the manufacture date was 2010. Using a top rated btry like Duracell we change smoke alarm btrys every 2 years contrary to the suggested 1 year time frame of replacement. We also check the alarm function every month. We also use these 9v btry's in our garage door openers. Hope this answers your question. LR

User questions & answers

Question: My entire home is equipped with BRK smoke detector (4120 B) and Carbon Monox Det (CO50120B). They need replacing. Will new BRK fit extant casings
Answer: Yes all the wired Nest Protect needs is the 120V hot (black) and neutral (white) wires in the electrical box connected to the plug-in pigtail that comes with the Protect. If your house has multiple detectors now you will usually also find a red wire in the electrical box that interconnects your old detectors so that if one goes off they all sound. That wire is no longer needed with the Protect so you just cap it with a wire nut.
Question: can these be connected together so if one is set off they all go off
Answer: Yes, but only if you are connected to the internet and then only for the last ten days, and only if the level rises above the heads up level (which is 70ppm and rising for around an hour or a shorter period if over 150ppm). To counter what someone else's answer was - Carbon monoxide does NOT sink. It is in fact lighter than air (CO has an atomic weight of 28 versus Nitrogen (N2) which is also 28 - but marginally heavier (by 0.003 amu due to heavier isotopes), Oxygen (O2) which is 32 and Argon which is 40. However the weight is similar enough in the air in your house that it tends to distribute as a fluid and is measurable anywhere in a room; it really depends upon how air moves through the space. The levels tend to fluctuate rapidly as CO distributes and any outside air mixes in and additional CO is added. Overall, there is no perfect way to measure the CO levels with one device in one place, but this is as good as most people need.
Question: How does the Alarm Latch feature "easily identify initiating alarm"? This is major problem with false alarms on my existing Kidde/Firex dual alarms
Answer: I just checked this for you. I unplugged my wifi router and started a test. All detectors alarmed as expected. So, yes, the system works even without active wifi.
Question: Can a BRK Model 92120B smoke detector directly plug in and replace an old BRK Model 4120B smoke detector (without an adapter
Answer: I think very few here understand the question. National code requires interconnected smoke detectors as of 2004, there is an extra wire in the circuit and all smoke detectors are on that wire for 'signal'. When one alarms they should ALL alarm. If I am reading the answers correctly, NEST does not comply with the signal wire. However, it looks like it does set up its own wireless network to act like they are all interconnected. To be honest, after paying for the extra wire behind the wall, why would I want to by 6-8 nests at $100 each when the originals are 20-30 each? This way there is one smart point to notify if any detector is going off. Nests way 6-9 smoke detectors, 6-8 login, 6-8 ip address. Ugh, what a nightmare!

User questions & answers

Question: How many come in a pack? The listing says 6, but some people in reviews say only got
Answer: The detectors with sealed batteries have a 10 year lithium battery installed, and have a slightly lower standby current draw. If the unit were to go off frequently, the battery of course would not last the 10 years. The sensing circuits on all manufacturers devices are only good for about 10 years, as this is there approximate life of the radioactive element inside the chamber. Hence, it makes no sense for a manufacturer to put a longer lasting battery in them. Units with replaceable batteries usually come with a 5 year battery, which you should replace once and then get a new detector on the 2nd battery's end of life.
Question: Are their pics of the back to see if it connects with my 3-prong wiring system
Answer: Wall mounting is permitted by the manufacturer, although ceiling mounting is generally preferred. The smoke alarm must NOT be mounted too close to a room corner, or it will be ineffective. See the manufacturer's literature for information and restrictions on mounting locations. Best.
Question: Where is the manufacture date on the smoke detectors
Answer: Yes, through X-Sense's US distributer, which also confirms the firmware matches the US standards.
Question: How does the battery gets installed. Images doesn't provide any directions there
Answer: All the X-Sense detectors are made in China. However, they have a US division that ensures the firmware adheres to all NFPA and UL standards. Every country has different requirements, thus different firmware. All R&D and manufacturing is done in China.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the manufacture date on these items
Answer: Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off.
Question: If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert
Answer: Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector.
Question: Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't
Answer: Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D.
Question: Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals
Answer: Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this.
Question: When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to
Answer: I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.
Question: does it come with the hardwire connector
Answer: Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery
Question: Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery
Answer: I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information.
Question: How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light
Answer: The back cover comes off install battery and replace

Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience By pressing the smoke alarm's Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This alarm's Smart Hush feature has the capability of temporarily desensitizing the alarm circuit for up to eight minutes. This feature is to be used only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the alarm. The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the Test/Hush button on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately. The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds every eight seconds while in Hush mode. This indicates that the alarm is in a temporarily desensitized condition. Additionally, the smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately eight minutes and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are still present. Smart Hush can be used repeatedly until the air has been cleared of the condition causing the alarm. Pushing the Test/Hush button on the alarm will end the hush period. Power Outage Protection, Indicator LED, and Test Feature A 10-year sealed lithium battery powers this alarm, providing continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards even during power outages. Because a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 40 to 45 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm contains a Test/Reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn. The unit measures just 5.6 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches in depth, and it features a neutral, white finish. This smoke alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 10-year limited warranty. Protects Against 2 Deadly Threats

Equipped with both an advanced photoelectric smoke sensor and electrochemical CO sensor, this unit provides faster reaction times to both slow-burning, smoldering fires and carbon monoxide, all in a single alarm. This combination alarm provides the ultimate 24/7 protection for your home and family from 2 deadly threats.

No Need to Replace the Battery

There's nothing more annoying than having to replace the battery in an alarm - especially during the middle of the night! To remove this nuisance, we've installed a 10-year lithium battery into our product and tested it rigorously to ensure endurance. This means that, under normal circumstances, you can expect the alarm to function for 10 years. Once the alarm reaches its end of life, it will beep twice, letting you know it needs replacing in order to protect your home.

Nuisance Alarm Protection

This X-Sense combination alarm has been redesigned from the inside out, and it will confirm that smoke triggers the alarm instead of interference by taking 3 separate smoke samples, minimizing false alarms to avoid waking you from sleep at 2 a.m.

Test Button for Regular Check

It is important to test your alarm before you use it, and to test it every week to ensure it is functioning properly. Once the alarm is in the test mode, it will deliver 2 sets of 3 long beeps, followed by 2 sets of 4 quick beeps, and the LED indicator will flash red with the same frequency, indicating that the unit is operating normally. If it is not working properly, please replace it immediately.
