13 best general carbon monoxide detectors
General carbon monoxide detectors, often categorized under combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, are essential safety devices designed to protect individuals and families from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Here are some key points about these detectors:
Purpose and Functionality: General carbon monoxide detectors are designed to monitor the air for the presence of carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas that can be produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels such as gas, oil, wood, and coal. They alert occupants when CO levels reach dangerous levels.
Dual Functionality: Combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are designed to provide dual protection by detecting both smoke from potential fires and elevated levels of CO gas. This makes them versatile and convenient for homes and businesses.
Alarm Types: These detectors typically feature different types of alarms, including audible alarms (loud beeping sounds), visual indicators (flashing lights), and sometimes digital displays that show the concentration of CO in parts per million (PPM).
Power Sources: General CO detectors can be powered by either batteries or by being hardwired into the electrical system of a building. Some models may offer both options, providing backup power in case of a power outage.
Placement: They should be strategically placed in various areas of a home or building where the risk of CO exposure is high. This includes areas near gas-burning appliances, attached garages, and bedrooms.
Maintenance: It's important to regularly test and maintain these detectors to ensure they are functioning properly. This may involve testing the alarm regularly, replacing batteries, and following manufacturer's guidelines for maintenance.
Compliance and Certification: Many countries and regions have specific regulations and standards regarding the installation and use of carbon monoxide detectors. It's important to ensure that the detectors meet the necessary certifications and standards for your location.
Response Protocol: In the event of a CO alarm, occupants should follow established safety protocols, which may include evacuating the building and contacting emergency services.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Risks: Carbon monoxide is a potentially lethal gas, and exposure can lead to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and, in severe cases, even death. Prompt detection and response are crucial in preventing harm.
General carbon monoxide detectors play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals and families by providing early warning of a potentially dangerous situation. It's important to follow manufacturer's instructions for installation, testing, and maintenance to ensure these devices function effectively.

User questions & answers
Question: | How often do these need to be replaced because of "end of life" warning? I feel like we are constantly replacing them and don't know what's normal |
Answer: | The installation instructions for this unit notes that it can be wall mounted, "If allowed by local building codes," (check with your Buildings Department - since several codes are in use in various localities) - with the proviso that the top of the mounted unit must be between "4 inches and 8 inches" below the wall-ceiling meeting, to avoid dead air space. |
Question: | Will this First Alert unit plug into my existing BRK 3-wire pigtail connector, or do I have to buy a BRK unit? Thank you |
Answer: | Off-white. |
Question: | Does anyone know if this smoke/carbon monoxide alarm is compatible with a house full of First Alert 9120Bs (smoke only)? Want them all connected |
Answer: | Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association. |
Question: | I have Model No. SC7010BV. Is the same replacement without the "V |
Answer: | The beep is effective. It always seems to start in the middle of the night. I twist the unit off the ceiling and do a battery swap and have it back on the ceiling in less than a minute, craw back into bed before really waking up. It's not a pain to replace the batteries, it's very easy. Simply slide the tray out and pop new ones in. The batteries fit snuggly in the compartment and there are tabs that allow you to push the batteries out by applying pressure with your thumbs from the back side. There is an optional screw hole to make the battery compartment tamper resistant. This prevents people from easily taking the batteries to power their remote controls or whatever. When fire marshals inspect fire related deaths it's not uncommon to find the smoke and fire detectors had no batteries installed. This simple, optional, screw might seem like "a pain" to some people, but it's an easy way to save your life. This is a great unit. I have 6 in my house and I highly recommend them to everyone. |

Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In DesignDesigned for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.
The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
Answer: | Your warranty starts at the date of purchase. Keep your receipt. Your 5 year shelf life starts the day you power it up. The expiration date is hard coded into the software and only starts the day you plug it in..... This is from BRK WEBSITE |
Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
Answer: | If there is a fire present, the fire alarm is probobly going off.If there is no fire it is probobly CO.It also beeps differently. Mine is 2 long for fire and 3 fast for CO. It sounds like this one is 3 & 4. I'm sure it says on the box somewhere. |
Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
Answer: | According to the National Fire Protection Association: Choose smoke alarms that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory.Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On levels without bedrooms, install alarms in the living room (or den or family room) or near the stairway to the upper level, or in both locations.Smoke alarms installed in the basement should be installed on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs leading to the next level.Smoke alarms should be installed at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms when cooking.Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Wall-mounted alarms should be installed not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling (to the top of the alarm). If you have ceilings that are pitched, install the alarm within 3 feet of the peak but not within the apex of the peak (four inches down from the peak). |
Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
Answer: | Because it is an ionizing detector. The radioactive material is 100% safe unless you extract it from the detector and ingest it. The other option is photoelectric detectors. Purchase one of those if you'd like. Both types do react differently to smoke and fire... There are many types of radiation and radioactive material you come into every day. Its best to research radiation to be more informed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it need to be recalibrated? How do you do it |
Answer: | Any incandescent/filament lamp/bulb can work with AC or DC. It won't have any good reason to 'care' which it is. |
Question: | I can’t unscrew the back. What tool will supposedly open it |
Answer: | I got this to replace the bulb in my old "Tensor" model 9100 desk lamp with a 2 stage switch. It says "Use #93 bulbs only" on the lamp bottom, so I took a shot. Not only does this fit, it puts out a much cleaner light, with less heat than the bulb that was in it, so I'm delighted. It also seems to be handling the 2 stage switch fine, and is slightly brighter on one level, than the other, though it is subtle. Do I need 10 of them, not likely, but I'm happy with it so far (about 10 minutes use, thus far.) |
Question: | Is the product UL certified |
Answer: | These say blue on the box. They are the new Premier Tubes. We receive new shipments from the manufacturer every month. |
Question: | Can the battery be recharged or will the unit need to be replaced after 2 years |
Answer: | The diameter of these tubes are 8mm. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact Customer Service at [email protected] or 800-992-7427. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do these talk to each other? Are there wifi frequencies or radiation |
Answer: | In this hardwired design, they are interconnected to each other on your 120 volt house wiring system -- typically 14/3 Romex with ground -- black for power, white for neutral and red for the orange interconnection wire. The uninsulated bare ground wire is not used. This First Alert version does not use wi-fi or radio frequencies to talk to each other. Only the unit initiating the alarm speaks the programmed room name. The other interconnected units do not announce the room name; they only sound the alarm. It seems a little misleading to me from the First Alert description. I replaced 11 old units that were interconnected in my house with this design, and when one goes off, I have to run around the house listening for the unit speaking its room name to find the one that initiated the alarm. |
Question: | When hardwired, will they all announce their location or only the room that triggered the entire system |
Answer: | In this hardwired design, only the one initiating the alarm speaks the programmed room name. |
Question: | If there are two - living room and bedroom. does the bedroom one say "fire detected in living room" or is it local only for voice location |
Answer: | Only the one initiating the alarm speaks the programmed room name. The other interconnected units do not announce the room name; they only sound the alarm. It seems dumb, but I replaced 11 old units in my house with this design, and when one goes off, I have to run around the house listening for the unit speaking its room name to find the one that initiated the alarm. |
Question: | Do the voice models have alarm and voice? Or just voice |

Get alerted to dangerous carbon monoxide leaks with the First Alert CO5120BN Hardwired Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup. This carbon monoxide detector uses an advanced electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor that accurately detects elevated CO levels and comes equipped with a microprocessor that helps minimize false alarms. The alarm's plug in power connector makes installation quick and easy, while its tamper resistant mounting bracket lock keeps the alarm secure. Featuring a 9 volt battery backup, this unit is designed to offer seamless detection, even in the event of a power outage. An 85 decibel horn sounds if carbon monoxide levels are too high, and a warning chirp notifies you when the battery needs to be replaced. This carbon monoxide alarm can integrate with up to 12 other First Alert or BRK hardwired alarms and up to six other compatible devices such as bells, horns, and repeaters making it ideal for comprehensive coverage of large households or facilities. A latching alarm indicator automatically identifies which unit in the series triggered the alarm. And thanks to the convenient test/silence button, the alarm can be checked easily to ensure it is functioning properly and false alarms can be muted easily.
The BRK hardwire carbon monoxide alarm detects dangerous CO gas and allows you peace of mind with its battery backup. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, deadly gas. It can be emitted by sources including gas or oil furnaces, gas clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, charcoal grills, gas ranges, and space heaters. A clogged chimney, improper venting, and attached garages can also cause carbon monoxide accumulation. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least one CO alarm should be installed near a home's sleeping area. This BRK alarm is perfect for bedrooms, as well as hallways, and basements.
The BRK CO5120BN hardwire CO alarm with battery backup includes these features:
- Quick plug-in power connector for easy installation.
- 120-volt AC inter-connectable (with maximum 18 compatible devices). The alarm can be interconnected with up to 12 other compatible smoke alarms and six compatible devices like bells, horns, repeaters and door closers. If one unit triggers an alarm, all smoke alarms in the series will sound. Power indicators show which unit in the series initiated the alarm.
- Microprocessor controlled for fewer nuisance alarms.
- Single test/silence button which both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality.
- Automatically performs internal test of functionality.
- Latching alarm indicator which automatically identifies which unit initiated the alarm.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the date of the units manufacture on the back of the case |
Answer: | I had the same problem. If you push the sensor hard into the base and twist it should work. As a last resort use double sided foam tape. |
Question: | my carbon monoxide went off and I fixed the gas leak. does the red light stay on when it is reset |
Question: | i need to replace my brk co5120b model...will the co5120bn have the same contector ..or can i plug the co5120b contector to the back of the co5120bn |
Answer: | Off-white. |
Question: | Unfortunately the sensor does not stay to the base. Do not why. I might have wrong piece shipped. Wish i could return |
Answer: | Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association. |
Product features
Smoke Alarms
Place at least 10 feet from kitchen/stove, and on the ceiling or high on a wall, no more than 10 inches from top.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Carbon monoxide alarms can be placed anywhere, not just the ceiling or high on a wall. They should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.
Fire Extinguishers
Keep in the kitchen and garage, but make sure to have the right grade for the type of fire that might occur.
Escape Ladders
Have at least one if your home has more than one story. Each room needs 2 escape routes; in most bedrooms it's the window, so have a ladder nearby.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this unit come calibrated or needs to be calibrated |
Answer: | Yes the case (with a belt loop) is included. |
Question: | Does the device report the uncertainty, meaning does it tell you if its +/-5% vs |
Answer: | I think it should be a good use for that, I use it at home with non vented gas fireplace. Running the fireplace for extensive times raises CO level and I could see it with this tool. The reading was still showing under 50 which is considered somewhat safe but can still affect people with weak immune system. I bought this perticular tool because I trust the brand. |
Question: | Device says temp range is "0-50c". does this mean it won't properly detect co if the temp is above 50c? (ie in exhaust gas |
Answer: | No |
Question: | does this unit detect explosive gases like methane (nautural gas) propane, etc or does it only detect Co |
Answer: | It mounts just like a smoke alarm so I’d say yes, why not |

Product description
The brk SC9120LBL alarm features a dual ionization smoke sensing chamber and an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor, an 85Db horn and a "silence" feature. This alarm features a 10 year battery backup. The battery drawer is shipped pre locked so battery will not be discarded prematurely. Under normal conditions you should not have to replace the battery for the life of the alarm. "Intelligent sensing technology" system is designed to reduce nuisance alarms. "Latching alarm indication" remembers which unit initiated an alarm. When interconnected in a series, the unit that triggered the alarm rapidly flashes its red LED indicator. After the alarm condition subsides, the initiating unit will store in memory or "latch" the information and begin to flash the LED indicator 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off. The "perfect mount" system features a gasketless base and a mounting bracket that keeps the alarm secure over a wide rotation range to allow for true alignment. Other contractor preferred features include a dust cover to keep alarm clean during construction, keyhole slots in the mounting bracket eliminate the need to remove the electrical box screws for installation.
