First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarm | Battery Operated, SCO5CN

FIRST ALERT

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers

Question: pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious
Answer: I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit.
Question: Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops
Answer: No
Question: I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago
Answer: The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Question: How long do batteries last
Answer: Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain.

User questions & answers

Question: My entire home is equipped with BRK smoke detector (4120 B) and Carbon Monox Det (CO50120B). They need replacing. Will new BRK fit extant casings
Answer: Hello. No. Our current alarms do not work with First Alert alarms and they are not compatible. They will either need to be all Kidde or all First Alert.
Question: can these be connected together so if one is set off they all go off
Answer: Yes
Question: How does the Alarm Latch feature "easily identify initiating alarm"? This is major problem with false alarms on my existing Kidde/Firex dual alarms
Answer: Up to 12 smoke or smoke + CO alarms can be connected, along with up to 6 non-alarm devices, such as strobes and horns. This is per the manufacturer's website.
Question: Can a BRK Model 92120B smoke detector directly plug in and replace an old BRK Model 4120B smoke detector (without an adapter
Answer: Hello. While the alarms are going off, the alarm setting off all of the others, the red LED light and then the green LED light will blink, every second. The other alarms will just have the red. If they stop on their own, the alarm that set off all of the others will have a red and amber LED light flashing one second each every 10 seconds. If you are getting nuisance alarms, we would recommend going ahead and blowing out all of the alarms around the back side edges very thoroughly with a can of compressed air like a can of keyboard cleaner. This will go a long way to avoiding nuisance alarms. Feel free to call us at 1-800-880-6788 with the problem alarm in hand if this doesn't help.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the manufacture date on these items
Answer: Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off.
Question: If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert
Answer: Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector.
Question: Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't
Answer: Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D.
Question: Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals
Answer: Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this.
Question: When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to
Answer: I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.
Question: does it come with the hardwire connector
Answer: Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery
Question: Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery
Answer: I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information.
Question: How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light
Answer: The back cover comes off install battery and replace

User questions & answers

Question: I see there are air holes in the back, so if it is placed against a surface, won't it impede the airflow into the detector
Answer: According to the company's website, the unit should be placed on its back (display facing upwards), on a flat surface, at breathing-level height, and away from windows, doors, air vents, etc. See https://support.airthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003370189-How-do-I-place-my-Home-radon-detector-to-obtain-correct-measurements- Or as their FAQ answer states: "You can just lay it flat on a table or a shelf. The air flows into the Radon chamber as usual." https://support.airthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001097069-Can-I-just-lay-the-unit-flat-on-its-back-side-
Question: what is the shortest amount of time you can do a test with this device? a home inspection last only a few hours..will it have to be left over night
Answer: Professional testers need to be used for a 48 hour test. For this home unit, it should run at least a week to be somewhat accurate. A month would be better. It will have a 20% deviation for a 48 hour test. 7 day test should be around 10% deviation and 2 months around 5%. Right now, mine has about a 30% deviation compared against professional 48 hour testers. I'm contacting support now for help. I've owned it for about 6 months.
Question: Are we positive the readings are accurate? I have now tested the first floor of the house and am getting a reading of 7.5 pCi/l
Answer: We have two older (15+ years) Safety Siren meters that read 2.3 & 2.4 for both long and short readings and seem stuck even after a reset/retest in our radon mitigated basement. The new Airthings 223 started a little over 2.0 and slowly dropped to 1.8. Yesterday I resealed the sump pit covers to the floor and the Airthings 223 1-day average already (
Question: how often does the tester need to be calibrated and how much does it cost to calibrate
Answer: My answer has nothing to do with radon concentration in the tested environment, but incorrect terminology being used on this discussion thread. Resetting the radon sensing instrumentation means system initialization to factory calibration, as the unit is not user calibrate able. Calibration implied by this question is to a standard, and it must have been done with the prototype designs when tested against known radon concentrations in chambers...using perhaps master instrumentation. I think this device can give you values within some level of confidence like 95%...but the measure value of any unit like this is not to be taken with 100% confidence.

Product features

Long and short term trends help you stay on top of radon levels.
Monitor your air quality.

Radon gas is in the air all around us and levels fluctuate daily. The good news is that a digital radon detector warns you when levels are getting high. Simple fixes around the home can dramatically improve your air such as increasing ventilation or sealing cracks in floors or even installing radon mitigation systems and radon fans.

User questions & answers

Question: If there is a false alarm, can I turn this off from my i-phone
Answer: I open back back forgot I had installed alarm, I have a keypad by back door. When alarm sounded true keypad, nothing. I ran to unplug. Duh, battery operated then run to phone. Phone stopped everything. I didn't even get a call. That happened December 30 2018.
Question: How long does the battery last
Answer: At first my batteries were reporting 85% after 6 months, and again about 85% after the second 6 months. Then I helped my neighbor in the condo next to me setup a zwave system. Suddenly my batteries are only lasting 4-6 weeks. In other words, your signal strength will have a lot to do with how long the batteries last.
Question: Will this, if wired to an existing system, trigger a notification if a non-z-wave Alarm goes off (can I buy just one or do I need to replace all
Answer: I don't think this can be wired to an existing system? It doesn't have the receptacles on the back like the wired units do. So, as far as I can tell, you'd have to replace them all. As an aside, I left my wired system in place (4 detectors) and just installed 2 of these. I figured if we're home the wired system will alert us inside the house. If we aren't home the zwave alarms will trigger eventually, but potentially not as quick (depending on source of smoke) without the same number of detectors.
Question: are they hard wire? (120v with battery backup) and do they have an interconnect wire
Answer: No, thus they are not code compliant in most jurisdictions since interconnect is often required.

User questions & answers

Question: How often do these need to be replaced because of "end of life" warning? I feel like we are constantly replacing them and don't know what's normal
Answer: The installation instructions for this unit notes that it can be wall mounted, "If allowed by local building codes," (check with your Buildings Department - since several codes are in use in various localities) - with the proviso that the top of the mounted unit must be between "4 inches and 8 inches" below the wall-ceiling meeting, to avoid dead air space.
Question: Will this First Alert unit plug into my existing BRK 3-wire pigtail connector, or do I have to buy a BRK unit? Thank you
Answer: Off-white.
Question: Does anyone know if this smoke/carbon monoxide alarm is compatible with a house full of First Alert 9120Bs (smoke only)? Want them all connected
Answer: Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association.
Question: I have Model No. SC7010BV. Is the same replacement without the "V
Answer: The beep is effective. It always seems to start in the middle of the night. I twist the unit off the ceiling and do a battery swap and have it back on the ceiling in less than a minute, craw back into bed before really waking up. It's not a pain to replace the batteries, it's very easy. Simply slide the tray out and pop new ones in. The batteries fit snuggly in the compartment and there are tabs that allow you to push the batteries out by applying pressure with your thumbs from the back side. There is an optional screw hole to make the battery compartment tamper resistant. This prevents people from easily taking the batteries to power their remote controls or whatever. When fire marshals inspect fire related deaths it's not uncommon to find the smoke and fire detectors had no batteries installed. This simple, optional, screw might seem like "a pain" to some people, but it's an easy way to save your life. This is a great unit. I have 6 in my house and I highly recommend them to everyone.
