Product description
This handy 2-pack of First Alert CO400 Carbon Monoxide Alarms utilizes electrochemical carbon monoxide sensors to monitor your space for carbon monoxide threats. The battery-powered design doesn't require an electrician; simply insert the included 9-volt battery into each alarm, and the carbon monoxide detectors are ready to go. The advanced electrochemical CO sensors detect carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel-burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. When CO levels become elevated, a loud 85-decibel alarm alerts you to the threat. Because CO evenly distributes itself, it's important to have a CO detector on every level and in every bedroom of your home. Designed to be simple to use, each CO detector has just one button that silences or tests the unit, as well as an end-of-life timer that lets you know when it's time to replace the device.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is date of manufacture |
Answer: | If your home has a good central location, where air will circulate from most areas of the house, I would say that one carbon monoxide monitor should be sufficient. In the case of a multi-story dwelling, I would invest in one carbon monoxide monitor per floor. Our home is a good example of a single floor dwelling of approximately 1400 sq. feet, with excellent air circulation. We have one monitor in a well ventilated hallway that is common to all the rooms of the house. I hope this response is helpful in your decision making. |
Question: | Does this come with the screws for installation or do I need to purchase separately |
Answer: | The instruction booklet that came with my First Alert carbon monoxide alarm (I do not know if I bought a "model C0615" -- my alarm has NO identifying alpha-numeric) informs me that there IS an extension cord already on the back of the alarm; it also tells how to access it. I unplugged my alarm from the outlet, turned it back-side-up and true enough the 2 pronged plug you use to plug it into the electrical outlet is part attached to a lightweight extension cord that I would estimate to be about 4 or 5 feet long. The instruction booklet says that is for use by those who want to remain standing and look at the alarm "face-to-face." Hope this helps, Fat. |
Question: | why does 9 volt battery not fit in compartment- door won't close |
Answer: | This unit probably detects CO at less than 30 ppm, but is not allowed to display that level unless a button is pushed. In this case, the peak level the alarm detected since last reset is what will show, not the current ambient level. From 30 to 70 ppm, the display can show the ambient level, but the alarm will not sound until it's been in that range for 30 days, as mentioned. At 70 ppm, the alarm is not to sound for at least an hour, and no more than 4 hours. That's UL requirements, which most codes across the US adhere to. |
Question: | What is best location for CO2 detector |
Answer: | No it will fit in the bottom leaving the top for your night light |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size home would this cover? Do I need more than one in a 1400 sq. ft. space |
Answer: | Straight into the wall... two prongs on the back. The rear picture shown on Amazon shows the prongs, but it's a little confusing because the battery door is shown open - when the door is shut, it's out of the way so the unit can mount directly on an an electoral socket. |
Question: | Does this alarm work when using an extension cord or must it be plugged directly into a wall outlet |
Answer: | The manual for the CO605 plug-in with battery backup says that if the battery is low or missing, it chirps once a minute. I don't have the item myself, so if somebody can confirm that it does chirp if it is plugged in without a battery, I would appreciate it. As to another answer here, if you are hearing 3 chirps per minute, it means the alarm is not functioning properly; it is not because of a low or missing battery, which is supposed to give off only one chirp per minute. |
Question: | can it detect levels of 20,30 or 40 ppm of CO? I know alot can only detect 70 ppm of CO or above...but I'm concerned of a small CO leak of below |
Answer: | If it is a 9 volt battery, it may not be seated correctly. See the video on the first alert website, and be prepared to do some hard pushing to get the 9V battery to engage. I had 3 9V units, and 2 of the 3 seemingly required excessive pressure to get the batteries to engage. When I first thought I had the batteries installed by just closing the door, the unit chirped until I got the batteries shoved on hard. |
Question: | If I plug this directly into the wall does it over both outlets? I have a nightlight in my hall where I want to place this unit |
Answer: | CO is slightly lighter than air, but about the same weight as Nitrogen molecules that is 78% of air. It mixes evenly over time. Researchers tested this by injecting CO into a column of air at different heights. All trials mixed evenly but the injection at the top took a little longer to reach equilibrium. Therefore, it's more important to put the detector near where the likely source might be or near where people might be sleeping than a particular height. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21536403/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | How often do these need to be replaced because of "end of life" warning? I feel like we are constantly replacing them and don't know what's normal |
Answer: | The installation instructions for this unit notes that it can be wall mounted, "If allowed by local building codes," (check with your Buildings Department - since several codes are in use in various localities) - with the proviso that the top of the mounted unit must be between "4 inches and 8 inches" below the wall-ceiling meeting, to avoid dead air space. |
Question: | Will this First Alert unit plug into my existing BRK 3-wire pigtail connector, or do I have to buy a BRK unit? Thank you |
Answer: | Off-white. |
Question: | Does anyone know if this smoke/carbon monoxide alarm is compatible with a house full of First Alert 9120Bs (smoke only)? Want them all connected |
Answer: | Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association. |
Question: | I have Model No. SC7010BV. Is the same replacement without the "V |
Answer: | The beep is effective. It always seems to start in the middle of the night. I twist the unit off the ceiling and do a battery swap and have it back on the ceiling in less than a minute, craw back into bed before really waking up. It's not a pain to replace the batteries, it's very easy. Simply slide the tray out and pop new ones in. The batteries fit snuggly in the compartment and there are tabs that allow you to push the batteries out by applying pressure with your thumbs from the back side. There is an optional screw hole to make the battery compartment tamper resistant. This prevents people from easily taking the batteries to power their remote controls or whatever. When fire marshals inspect fire related deaths it's not uncommon to find the smoke and fire detectors had no batteries installed. This simple, optional, screw might seem like "a pain" to some people, but it's an easy way to save your life. This is a great unit. I have 6 in my house and I highly recommend them to everyone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can i fly with this for overseas use |
Answer: | No. This does not sync with those. |
Question: | These CO2 detectors have a shelf life, how do we get these with the full life of the unit? Some are already past the exp. date |
Answer: | Yes. Batteries are included. |
Question: | Will this give your exact co level even if it's normal or only if the co is dangerous |
Answer: | This PL-259 Jumper Cable is usually used for HAM & CB Radio, Antenna Analyzer, Dummy Load, SWR Meter. If it is used for WIFI modem, you need to check if your device has SO239 connector. |
Question: | is this good for travel |
Answer: | Loss in a co-ax is a function of frequency. Assuming we are talking about the 12” patches. At 1ft of RG58 run 14MHz(20m band) it has a 0.013dB loss, at 440MHz (70cm band) it has 0.08dB loss... which yeah if you add everything up it could be rather substantial. As a patch cable though. If you want to try patching with a LMR400UF, that’s all on you, but you can’t beat the flexibility of RG58 If you’re going to attempt to run say 100ft of RG58 on 70cm yeah... 90% of your power goes to de-icing the feed line. It all depends on your application :D 73 de KN4GEI |

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |

The BRK hardwire carbon monoxide alarm detects dangerous CO gas and allows you peace of mind with its battery backup. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, deadly gas. It can be emitted by sources including gas or oil furnaces, gas clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, charcoal grills, gas ranges, and space heaters. A clogged chimney, improper venting, and attached garages can also cause carbon monoxide accumulation. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least one CO alarm should be installed near a home's sleeping area. This BRK alarm is perfect for bedrooms, as well as hallways, and basements.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the date of the units manufacture on the back of the case |
Answer: | I had the same problem. If you push the sensor hard into the base and twist it should work. As a last resort use double sided foam tape. |
Question: | my carbon monoxide went off and I fixed the gas leak. does the red light stay on when it is reset |
Question: | i need to replace my brk co5120b model...will the co5120bn have the same contector ..or can i plug the co5120b contector to the back of the co5120bn |
Answer: | Off-white. |
Question: | Unfortunately the sensor does not stay to the base. Do not why. I might have wrong piece shipped. Wish i could return |
Answer: | Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association. |
Product features
Smoke Alarms
Place at least 10 feet from kitchen/stove, and on the ceiling or high on a wall, no more than 10 inches from top.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Carbon monoxide alarms can be placed anywhere, not just the ceiling or high on a wall. They should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.
Fire Extinguishers
Keep in the kitchen and garage, but make sure to have the right grade for the type of fire that might occur.
Escape Ladders
Have at least one if your home has more than one story. Each room needs 2 escape routes; in most bedrooms it's the window, so have a ladder nearby.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off. |
Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector. |
Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
Answer: | Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D. |
Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
Answer: | Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this. |
Question: | When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to |
Answer: | I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM. |
Question: | does it come with the hardwire connector |
Answer: | Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery |
Question: | Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery |
Answer: | I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information. |
Question: | How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light |
Answer: | The back cover comes off install battery and replace |
Product features
Always Alert
In order to monitor your home even if you are away, this detector includes an Alarm Memory feature. If the green LED is blinking once every 16 seconds, the unit has detected CO levels of 100PPM or higher, or detected smoke and then ceased its alarm. Pressing the Test/Reset will reset the memory and inform you of the hazard detected.
Easy to Install
Ensure the safety of your family and home with the combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm from Kidde. This is a hardwired alarm that can be used in an interconnected system, and it features a battery backup, in addition to voice alerts. Using an advanced photoelectric sensor, capable of detecting visible fire particles associated with smoldering fires, and an electrochemical sensor for CO detection, you can rest easy and feel protected.
Easy Access
If the low battery warning sounds, there is a convenient front-loading battery door so that you don’t have to remove the alarm from its mounting bracket to replace the alarm. Additionally, to ensure that there is always a properly functioning battery, the battery compartment will not close if the battery is not installed correctly.

User questions & answers
Question: | If there is a false alarm, can I turn this off from my i-phone |
Answer: | I open back back forgot I had installed alarm, I have a keypad by back door. When alarm sounded true keypad, nothing. I ran to unplug. Duh, battery operated then run to phone. Phone stopped everything. I didn't even get a call. That happened December 30 2018. |
Question: | How long does the battery last |
Answer: | At first my batteries were reporting 85% after 6 months, and again about 85% after the second 6 months. Then I helped my neighbor in the condo next to me setup a zwave system. Suddenly my batteries are only lasting 4-6 weeks. In other words, your signal strength will have a lot to do with how long the batteries last. |
Question: | Will this, if wired to an existing system, trigger a notification if a non-z-wave Alarm goes off (can I buy just one or do I need to replace all |
Answer: | I don't think this can be wired to an existing system? It doesn't have the receptacles on the back like the wired units do. So, as far as I can tell, you'd have to replace them all. As an aside, I left my wired system in place (4 detectors) and just installed 2 of these. I figured if we're home the wired system will alert us inside the house. If we aren't home the zwave alarms will trigger eventually, but potentially not as quick (depending on source of smoke) without the same number of detectors. |
Question: | are they hard wire? (120v with battery backup) and do they have an interconnect wire |
Answer: | No, thus they are not code compliant in most jurisdictions since interconnect is often required. |
