13 best carbon monoxide detectors
Carbon monoxide detectors are important safety devices designed to alert individuals to the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) gas in indoor environments. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly when inhaled in high concentrations. These detectors play a crucial role in protecting people from carbon monoxide poisoning. Here are some key aspects of carbon monoxide detectors:
Function: Carbon monoxide detectors continuously monitor the air for the presence of CO gas. When elevated levels are detected, they emit an audible alarm to alert occupants of potential danger.
Power Sources: Carbon monoxide detectors can be powered by batteries, hardwired into a building's electrical system, or a combination of both. Battery-powered detectors are portable and can be placed anywhere in the home, making them suitable for areas without electrical outlets.
Placement: It is recommended to install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of a home and in close proximity to sleeping areas. They should also be placed near sources of potential CO emissions, such as gas furnaces, stoves, water heaters, and fireplaces.
Combination Detectors: Some detectors are designed to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide. These combination smoke and CO detectors provide comprehensive protection against two common household dangers.
Digital Displays: Many modern carbon monoxide detectors feature digital displays that show the current CO levels in parts per million (ppm). This can help users identify the severity of the situation.
Audible Alarms: When carbon monoxide is detected at a dangerous level, the detector emits a loud, distinctive alarm sound to alert occupants. The sound may vary in intensity or pattern depending on the manufacturer.
Testing and Maintenance: Regular testing and maintenance of carbon monoxide detectors are essential. This involves pressing a test button to ensure the alarm sounds correctly and replacing batteries or the entire unit as needed. Detectors typically have a lifespan of 5-10 years.
Regulations and Standards: Carbon monoxide detectors are subject to various regulations and standards, which can vary by region. It's essential to ensure that the detector you purchase complies with local safety requirements.
CO Poisoning Symptoms: Carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and, in severe cases, unconsciousness or death. Early detection and evacuation are critical when CO is present.
Emergency Response: If a carbon monoxide detector sounds an alarm, occupants should immediately evacuate the premises, call emergency services, and seek medical attention if symptoms of CO poisoning are present.
In summary, carbon monoxide detectors are vital safety devices that help protect individuals and families from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. They should be installed and maintained according to manufacturer guidelines and local regulations to ensure their effectiveness in detecting and alerting occupants to the presence of this deadly gas.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this device work in a 6' x 6' hunting blind with a Mr. Heater heating unit |
Answer: | Not for sure but wife read that rhey can fluxiate between 0-3 with no problems mine does it also |
Question: | your cob b lcm coc allarm is 15$ 6 is 99$ . why does quantity coct more |
Answer: | When I used the digital gas detector to test it worked fine. |
Question: | How far apart are the mounting holes |
Answer: | There are two possible causes. The unit was not zeroed out upon activation or you do have a very low level of gas in your home atmosphere, with the first being my best guess. Unplug and move and re-check the reading. If this does not resolve the issue send it back for a new one. Mine has worked well for 6 months so far. |
Question: | Why is the 2 pack more than 2 times the price of the single detector |
Answer: | I returned these detectors. They don't have any information printed on the case - no manufacturer name, no instructions, no UL approved indicator, etc. These were made in China which is usually okay but I am not comfortable in relying on them to protect my family. I will be researching further and looking for better detectors that can be trusted. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When I unplug this device the green light goes off even though the batteries are installed as a backup. Is that normal |
Answer: | It's about 5 1/2 in from hinge to hinge ~ 14.5 cm. It does provide full cover. The foam is flush with my face without being uncomfortable. It however is not waterproof. The foam has air slots so it can breathe. I've used these for Chemistry lab as well as wood working, and they work great. |
Question: | When I try put battery in or plug it in, the alarm goes off! Does that alarm sound stop? It's brand new |
Answer: | They stay on surprisingly well! I use them for my dog grooming business. They are light weight so that works good for me. They might be a bit too light for sports. If you got hit with a ball they would probably crack and potentially cut you. |
Question: | How do you turn on the "low battery hush |
Answer: | Yes, it should do a good job to keep out drywall dust. However, I ended up removing it due to condensation buildup while using it |
Question: | What is the location of the wall plug on the device? Will it cover the entire outlet |
Answer: | yes they can fit over Rx glasses but I don't recommend because they became blurring and you will not see very well |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this device work with Nest products and where ids it made |
Answer: | This unit does not depend on the internet to work. It is portable. However, it has internet connection ports so it can use every feature the net can offer. I am very pleased with it's operation and quality. |
Question: | Can this be mounted vertically on a wall |
Answer: | It has been two weeks since I bought this snake endoscope camera. I used it to repair my drain pipe. When I got this inspection camera, there was still electricity in it. After a full recharged, I used it several times. It still has power. I think it can be used for at least 4 hours after fully charged. This is a good device with a large capacity battery. |
Question: | Can this be synced with the wireless smoke alarms also |
Answer: | Hello, this is how I did it. Insert the USB data cable in the shutdown state, and then turn it on again, the data of the TF card can be directly read by the computer. When the memory card is full, I will transfer the important files inside to the computer, and then format the TF card, then you can start using it again, hope it will help you. |
Question: | Are batteries included with the product |
Answer: | I use it to check my household appliances. I also encountered the problem of blurred video before. Before using it, check whether the lens is blocked by dirt and wipe it clean with a lens cloth. And because the focus of the inspection camera is 3-10cm/1.2-3.9inch, the observation distance needs to be within this range to get the best quality pictures and videos. When I do these two points, It works well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off. |
Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector. |
Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
Answer: | Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D. |
Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
Answer: | Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this. |
Question: | When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to |
Answer: | I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM. |
Question: | does it come with the hardwire connector |
Answer: | Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery |
Question: | Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery |
Answer: | I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information. |
Question: | How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light |
Answer: | The back cover comes off install battery and replace |

Designed for home use, the Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in CO alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring of CO levels--even during power outages.
About Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Killer
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house from CO exposure by giving you an unmistakable signal when levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beats every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk is unique among traditional CO alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | What size home would this cover? Do I need more than one in a 1400 sq. ft. space |
Answer: | Straight into the wall... two prongs on the back. The rear picture shown on Amazon shows the prongs, but it's a little confusing because the battery door is shown open - when the door is shut, it's out of the way so the unit can mount directly on an an electoral socket. |
Question: | Does this alarm work when using an extension cord or must it be plugged directly into a wall outlet |
Answer: | The manual for the CO605 plug-in with battery backup says that if the battery is low or missing, it chirps once a minute. I don't have the item myself, so if somebody can confirm that it does chirp if it is plugged in without a battery, I would appreciate it. As to another answer here, if you are hearing 3 chirps per minute, it means the alarm is not functioning properly; it is not because of a low or missing battery, which is supposed to give off only one chirp per minute. |
Question: | can it detect levels of 20,30 or 40 ppm of CO? I know alot can only detect 70 ppm of CO or above...but I'm concerned of a small CO leak of below |
Answer: | If it is a 9 volt battery, it may not be seated correctly. See the video on the first alert website, and be prepared to do some hard pushing to get the 9V battery to engage. I had 3 9V units, and 2 of the 3 seemingly required excessive pressure to get the batteries to engage. When I first thought I had the batteries installed by just closing the door, the unit chirped until I got the batteries shoved on hard. |
Question: | If I plug this directly into the wall does it over both outlets? I have a nightlight in my hall where I want to place this unit |
Answer: | CO is slightly lighter than air, but about the same weight as Nitrogen molecules that is 78% of air. It mixes evenly over time. Researchers tested this by injecting CO into a column of air at different heights. All trials mixed evenly but the injection at the top took a little longer to reach equilibrium. Therefore, it's more important to put the detector near where the likely source might be or near where people might be sleeping than a particular height. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21536403/ |
Product description
This handy 2-pack of First Alert CO400 Carbon Monoxide Alarms utilizes electrochemical carbon monoxide sensors to monitor your space for carbon monoxide threats. The battery-powered design doesn't require an electrician; simply insert the included 9-volt battery into each alarm, and the carbon monoxide detectors are ready to go. The advanced electrochemical CO sensors detect carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel-burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. When CO levels become elevated, a loud 85-decibel alarm alerts you to the threat. Because CO evenly distributes itself, it's important to have a CO detector on every level and in every bedroom of your home. Designed to be simple to use, each CO detector has just one button that silences or tests the unit, as well as an end-of-life timer that lets you know when it's time to replace the device.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is date of manufacture |
Answer: | If your home has a good central location, where air will circulate from most areas of the house, I would say that one carbon monoxide monitor should be sufficient. In the case of a multi-story dwelling, I would invest in one carbon monoxide monitor per floor. Our home is a good example of a single floor dwelling of approximately 1400 sq. feet, with excellent air circulation. We have one monitor in a well ventilated hallway that is common to all the rooms of the house. I hope this response is helpful in your decision making. |
Question: | Does this come with the screws for installation or do I need to purchase separately |
Answer: | The instruction booklet that came with my First Alert carbon monoxide alarm (I do not know if I bought a "model C0615" -- my alarm has NO identifying alpha-numeric) informs me that there IS an extension cord already on the back of the alarm; it also tells how to access it. I unplugged my alarm from the outlet, turned it back-side-up and true enough the 2 pronged plug you use to plug it into the electrical outlet is part attached to a lightweight extension cord that I would estimate to be about 4 or 5 feet long. The instruction booklet says that is for use by those who want to remain standing and look at the alarm "face-to-face." Hope this helps, Fat. |
Question: | why does 9 volt battery not fit in compartment- door won't close |
Answer: | This unit probably detects CO at less than 30 ppm, but is not allowed to display that level unless a button is pushed. In this case, the peak level the alarm detected since last reset is what will show, not the current ambient level. From 30 to 70 ppm, the display can show the ambient level, but the alarm will not sound until it's been in that range for 30 days, as mentioned. At 70 ppm, the alarm is not to sound for at least an hour, and no more than 4 hours. That's UL requirements, which most codes across the US adhere to. |
Question: | What is best location for CO2 detector |
Answer: | No it will fit in the bottom leaving the top for your night light |
Product description
The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the monitor plug directly into the wall socket or is there an electric cord |
Answer: | This is not a plug-in. Operates on 3 AA batteries and acan be easily mounted on wall. Love it. |
Question: | Will the unit work without a bettery in it |
Answer: | The User's Guide for this product, and stamped on the item itself, are model numbers of alkalines, (Duracell MN1500 or MX1500; Energizer E91, etc). However, it does say "Use of a different battery may have a detrimental effect on the alarm operation." Thank you for calling my attention to this, because the rechargeables I use are NiMH. The item comes with batteries. |
Question: | why does mine chirp intertmittently |
Answer: | There is no installation required. Just put in the batteries as shown and it's ready to go. I move mine from room to room. You can mount it on a wall if you want. |
Question: | I love the idea of plug-in without messing with batteries at all, but plug-is are only a foot of the floor. gas is lighter than air. would we be dead by the time the house is so filled it reaches clear down to the outlet? now leaning toward battery unit so I can place it high. opinions |
Answer: | After spending 40+ years in the car business I have this to say: (everyone seems to be telling what they did or didn't do for a living 😉) I have that if you mount them from one foot above the floor, to one below the ceiling, or even on it..it is still better to have one than NOT to have one! No matter where it is!! It's like ANY tester or alarm, if you don't have one..that's when it will get you killed. Either way, most people will end up mounting them where they are out of sight. No matter what the papers or anyone tells you. Put at least one on each floor..and pray you never need them. Simple as that! Oh..the 40+ years in the car business Taught me this!l, Any idea how much CO is put out into the air of a car dealership over the course of each day, working on from 20-200 cars a day? A LOT! So again, mount it anyplace..but just MOUNT it! Good luck to you all. ;) |

The Nighthawk is an easy-to-install unit that provides reliable protection against the dangers of CO and explosive gas. The digital display shows if gas is present indicates CO levels in parts per million, allowing you to see if, how, and when levels change.
Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In DesignDesigned for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.
The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor |
Answer: | Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much |
Question: | is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product |
Answer: | Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards. |
Question: | No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners |
Answer: | HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much |
Question: | I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas |
Answer: | Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards. |

Answer: | Hello Bob, it's the Alorva team here. We do not provide moisture reduction packets, however, if you feel you need that added protection from moisture, feel free to do so. Some customers are constantly adding and taking out documents from their bags all the time and this airflow that is introduced is sufficient to keep moisture to non-existent levels. Thanks and have a Merry Xmas, The Alorva team. |
