13 best home co detector

A home CO detector, or carbon monoxide detector, is an essential safety device designed to monitor the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) gas in indoor spaces. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels such as natural gas, propane, oil, and wood. It is highly toxic and can be lethal in high concentrations. Here are some important aspects of home CO detectors:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of a home CO detector is to alert residents to the presence of carbon monoxide gas in their home. Early detection is crucial because exposure to even low levels of CO can lead to symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, and, in severe cases, can result in unconsciousness or death.

  2. Detection Mechanism: CO detectors typically use electrochemical sensors or metal oxide sensors to detect carbon monoxide gas. When CO is present in the air, it reacts with the sensor, triggering an alarm.

  3. Installation: Home CO detectors should be strategically placed throughout the home, especially in sleeping areas and near sources of potential CO emissions, such as gas furnaces, stoves, fireplaces, and attached garages. It's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for placement.

  4. Types of CO Detectors: There are two main types of home CO detectors:

    • Battery-Powered Detectors: These detectors are powered by replaceable batteries and are easy to install. They provide continuous monitoring, but the batteries need regular replacement.

    • Hardwired Detectors: Hardwired CO detectors are connected to the home's electrical system and often have a battery backup. They provide continuous monitoring and do not require battery changes as frequently.

  5. Digital Displays: Some CO detectors come with digital displays that show the current CO levels in parts per million (ppm). This feature can be useful for identifying the source of CO and assessing its severity.

  6. Audible Alarms: When elevated levels of carbon monoxide are detected, the CO detector emits a loud, distinctive alarm sound to alert occupants. It is essential to take the alarm seriously and evacuate the premises immediately if it goes off.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance includes testing the CO detector's functionality, replacing batteries (if applicable), and cleaning the device to ensure it operates correctly. Most CO detectors have a test button for this purpose.

  8. Interconnected Detectors: For added safety, interconnected CO detectors communicate with each other. If one detector detects CO, all interconnected detectors in the home will sound their alarms, providing early warning throughout the residence.

  9. Legislation and Regulations: Many jurisdictions have regulations requiring the installation of CO detectors in residential properties. It is essential to be aware of local laws and comply with them.

In summary, a home CO detector is a critical safety device that helps protect residents from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Proper installation, maintenance, and awareness of the device's warnings are essential for ensuring the safety of occupants in a home.

User questions & answers

Question: Would this device work in a 6' x 6' hunting blind with a Mr. Heater heating unit
Answer: Not for sure but wife read that rhey can fluxiate between 0-3 with no problems mine does it also
Question: your cob b lcm coc allarm is 15$ 6 is 99$ . why does quantity coct more
Answer: When I used the digital gas detector to test it worked fine.
Question: How far apart are the mounting holes
Answer: There are two possible causes. The unit was not zeroed out upon activation or you do have a very low level of gas in your home atmosphere, with the first being my best guess. Unplug and move and re-check the reading. If this does not resolve the issue send it back for a new one. Mine has worked well for 6 months so far.
Question: Why is the 2 pack more than 2 times the price of the single detector
Answer: I returned these detectors. They don't have any information printed on the case - no manufacturer name, no instructions, no UL approved indicator, etc. These were made in China which is usually okay but I am not comfortable in relying on them to protect my family. I will be researching further and looking for better detectors that can be trusted.

First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarm | Battery Operated, SCO5CN

FIRST ALERT

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers

Question: pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious
Answer: I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit.
Question: Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops
Answer: No
Question: I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago
Answer: The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Question: How long do batteries last
Answer: Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain.

User questions & answers

Question: When I unplug this device the green light goes off even though the batteries are installed as a backup. Is that normal
Answer: It's about 5 1/2 in from hinge to hinge ~ 14.5 cm. It does provide full cover. The foam is flush with my face without being uncomfortable. It however is not waterproof. The foam has air slots so it can breathe. I've used these for Chemistry lab as well as wood working, and they work great.
Question: When I try put battery in or plug it in, the alarm goes off! Does that alarm sound stop? It's brand new
Answer: They stay on surprisingly well! I use them for my dog grooming business. They are light weight so that works good for me. They might be a bit too light for sports. If you got hit with a ball they would probably crack and potentially cut you.
Question: How do you turn on the "low battery hush
Answer: Yes, it should do a good job to keep out drywall dust. However, I ended up removing it due to condensation buildup while using it
Question: What is the location of the wall plug on the device? Will it cover the entire outlet
Answer: yes they can fit over Rx glasses but I don't recommend because they became blurring and you will not see very well

About Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Killer

The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.

Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO Levels

When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house from CO exposure by giving you an unmistakable signal when levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beats every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed.

Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels

The KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk is unique among traditional CO alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged.

LED Shows Sensor Status

With the KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.

Convenient Mounting Options

The KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.

The UL-listed Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor
Answer: Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much
Question: is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product
Answer: Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards.
Question: No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners
Answer: HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much
Question: I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas
Answer: Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the manufacture date on these items
Answer: Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off.
Question: If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert
Answer: Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector.
Question: Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't
Answer: Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D.

10 Year Battery Operated

Powered by sealed, ten year lithium batteries to provide continuous protection for ten years without battery replacement

Varying Frequency Is Ideal for Hearing Impaired

Answer: Hello Bob, it's the Alorva team here. We do not provide moisture reduction packets, however, if you feel you need that added protection from moisture, feel free to do so. Some customers are constantly adding and taking out documents from their bags all the time and this airflow that is introduced is sufficient to keep moisture to non-existent levels. Thanks and have a Merry Xmas, The Alorva team.

User questions & answers

Question: How can you tell if it is carbon monoxide or when it is smoke
Answer: I placed the negative on the scanner and places the light on top, flat against the scanner and it was too much light. They were very good negatives but old. It came out with faint marks on the picture but nothing you could make out.
Question: Will this product detect natural gas
Answer: I would search for this on amazon. AC/DC adapter Model: KA24-1201000US INPUT: 100- 240VAC OUTPUT: 12V---1000mA
Question: Why do the instructions advise against mounting the device within 15 feet of a furnace? Doesn't that defeat the purpose
Answer: I would not, for I do not want any imperfection on it surface. Any scratch or dent into the light box surface would transfer by tracing or drawing.
Question: Are these ul certified? i have seen mixed reviews some say yes some say no
Answer: Hi Sandra- The surface is a plastic. It's very smooth and is just like glass. I am loving the very bright but dimmable LED light. I was looking for a traditional light box for use in my interior design business, so when I saw this I was excited but a little skeptical. I love it, better than I thought.

User questions & answers

Question: does it need to be recalibrated? How do you do it
Answer: Any incandescent/filament lamp/bulb can work with AC or DC. It won't have any good reason to 'care' which it is.
Question: I can’t unscrew the back. What tool will supposedly open it
Answer: I got this to replace the bulb in my old "Tensor" model 9100 desk lamp with a 2 stage switch. It says "Use #93 bulbs only" on the lamp bottom, so I took a shot. Not only does this fit, it puts out a much cleaner light, with less heat than the bulb that was in it, so I'm delighted. It also seems to be handling the 2 stage switch fine, and is slightly brighter on one level, than the other, though it is subtle. Do I need 10 of them, not likely, but I'm happy with it so far (about 10 minutes use, thus far.)
Question: Is the product UL certified
Answer: These say blue on the box. They are the new Premier Tubes. We receive new shipments from the manufacturer every month.
Question: Can the battery be recharged or will the unit need to be replaced after 2 years
Answer: The diameter of these tubes are 8mm. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact Customer Service at [email protected] or 800-992-7427.
