12 best generic carbon monoxide alarms
Generic carbon monoxide alarms, commonly known as carbon monoxide detectors, are essential devices designed to alert individuals to the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) gas in indoor environments. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuels, such as natural gas, gasoline, propane, and wood. It is a highly toxic gas that can be life-threatening when inhaled in high concentrations.
Here are some key points about generic carbon monoxide alarms:
Function: Carbon monoxide detectors are designed to monitor the air for the presence of CO gas. When CO levels reach a dangerous threshold, the alarm emits a loud and distinct audible signal to warn occupants.
Safety Importance: These alarms are crucial for ensuring the safety of individuals in homes, offices, and other indoor spaces where fuel-burning appliances are used. Breathing in carbon monoxide can lead to symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, and, in severe cases, can result in unconsciousness or death.
Power Sources: Carbon monoxide detectors are available in battery-operated and hardwired (electrically powered) versions. Battery-operated units are typically more portable and suitable for areas without electrical outlets, while hardwired versions are integrated into a building's electrical system.
Placement: It is recommended to install carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of a building and near sleeping areas. Proper placement is crucial to ensure early detection in case of a CO leak.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep these alarms functioning correctly. This includes testing the alarm regularly, changing the batteries (for battery-operated models), and cleaning them to prevent dust and debris from blocking the sensors.
Types of Sensors: There are two main types of sensors used in carbon monoxide detectors: electrochemical sensors and biomimetic sensors. Electrochemical sensors are more common and are highly accurate in detecting CO levels. Biomimetic sensors use a gel that changes color in the presence of CO.
UL Certification: Look for carbon monoxide alarms that have been tested and certified by recognized organizations like Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to ensure their reliability and accuracy.
Interconnectivity: Some modern carbon monoxide detectors are designed to be interconnected with other alarms, such as smoke detectors, within a building. This means that if one alarm is triggered, all interconnected alarms will sound, providing comprehensive safety coverage.
Digital Displays: Many carbon monoxide detectors also feature digital displays that show the current CO levels in parts per million (ppm), which can provide valuable information about the severity of a CO leak.
Legislation and Regulations: Depending on your location, there may be local and national regulations requiring the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in residential and commercial buildings.
In summary, generic carbon monoxide alarms, or carbon monoxide detectors, are essential safety devices for protecting against the silent threat of carbon monoxide poisoning. They are available in various types, power sources, and with additional features to suit the specific needs of different environments. Regular maintenance and proper installation are crucial to ensure their effectiveness in detecting and warning of carbon monoxide leaks.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these wired ones install on old electrical wired systems? The thermostat needed an additional wire installed. Will these, too |
Answer: | Yes all the wired Nest Protect needs is the 120V hot (black) and neutral (white) wires in the electrical box connected to the plug-in pigtail that comes with the Protect. If your house has multiple detectors now you will usually also find a red wire in the electrical box that interconnects your old detectors so that if one goes off they all sound. That wire is no longer needed with the Protect so you just cap it with a wire nut. |
Question: | Can you view carbon monoxide levels in PPM |
Answer: | Yes, but only if you are connected to the internet and then only for the last ten days, and only if the level rises above the heads up level (which is 70ppm and rising for around an hour or a shorter period if over 150ppm). To counter what someone else's answer was - Carbon monoxide does NOT sink. It is in fact lighter than air (CO has an atomic weight of 28 versus Nitrogen (N2) which is also 28 - but marginally heavier (by 0.003 amu due to heavier isotopes), Oxygen (O2) which is 32 and Argon which is 40. However the weight is similar enough in the air in your house that it tends to distribute as a fluid and is measurable anywhere in a room; it really depends upon how air moves through the space. The levels tend to fluctuate rapidly as CO distributes and any outside air mixes in and additional CO is added. Overall, there is no perfect way to measure the CO levels with one device in one place, but this is as good as most people need. |
Question: | What happens if the wifi disconnects? Does the alarm sound |
Answer: | The Nest Protects and Nest Learning Thermostat create their own ad-hoc network and don't rely on your home wifi for communications between devices. WiFi is only used for communications OUTSIDE of the home to pass on alerts, etc. Even if the ad-hoc network fails the individual alarms will sound as they detect smoke/CO. |
Question: | My home has hard-wired interconnected smoke detectors. can i simply replace one with this device? i read that it doesn't use interconnect wire |
Answer: | I think very few here understand the question. National code requires interconnected smoke detectors as of 2004, there is an extra wire in the circuit and all smoke detectors are on that wire for 'signal'. When one alarms they should ALL alarm. If I am reading the answers correctly, NEST does not comply with the signal wire. However, it looks like it does set up its own wireless network to act like they are all interconnected. To be honest, after paying for the extra wire behind the wall, why would I want to by 6-8 nests at $100 each when the originals are 20-30 each? This way there is one smart point to notify if any detector is going off. Nests way 6-9 smoke detectors, 6-8 login, 6-8 ip address. Ugh, what a nightmare! |

User questions & answers
Question: | When I unplug this device the green light goes off even though the batteries are installed as a backup. Is that normal |
Answer: | It's about 5 1/2 in from hinge to hinge ~ 14.5 cm. It does provide full cover. The foam is flush with my face without being uncomfortable. It however is not waterproof. The foam has air slots so it can breathe. I've used these for Chemistry lab as well as wood working, and they work great. |
Question: | When I try put battery in or plug it in, the alarm goes off! Does that alarm sound stop? It's brand new |
Answer: | They stay on surprisingly well! I use them for my dog grooming business. They are light weight so that works good for me. They might be a bit too light for sports. If you got hit with a ball they would probably crack and potentially cut you. |
Question: | How do you turn on the "low battery hush |
Answer: | Yes, it should do a good job to keep out drywall dust. However, I ended up removing it due to condensation buildup while using it |
Question: | What is the location of the wall plug on the device? Will it cover the entire outlet |
Answer: | yes they can fit over Rx glasses but I don't recommend because they became blurring and you will not see very well |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this device work in a 6' x 6' hunting blind with a Mr. Heater heating unit |
Answer: | Not for sure but wife read that rhey can fluxiate between 0-3 with no problems mine does it also |
Question: | your cob b lcm coc allarm is 15$ 6 is 99$ . why does quantity coct more |
Answer: | When I used the digital gas detector to test it worked fine. |
Question: | How far apart are the mounting holes |
Answer: | There are two possible causes. The unit was not zeroed out upon activation or you do have a very low level of gas in your home atmosphere, with the first being my best guess. Unplug and move and re-check the reading. If this does not resolve the issue send it back for a new one. Mine has worked well for 6 months so far. |
Question: | Why is the 2 pack more than 2 times the price of the single detector |
Answer: | I returned these detectors. They don't have any information printed on the case - no manufacturer name, no instructions, no UL approved indicator, etc. These were made in China which is usually okay but I am not comfortable in relying on them to protect my family. I will be researching further and looking for better detectors that can be trusted. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off. |
Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector. |
Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
Answer: | Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D. |
Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
Answer: | Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this. |
Question: | When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to |
Answer: | I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM. |
Question: | does it come with the hardwire connector |
Answer: | Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery |
Question: | Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery |
Answer: | I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information. |
Question: | How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light |
Answer: | The back cover comes off install battery and replace |

Question: | How do you know when this detector goes bad? Other than the production date on the back of it? Mine is dated May |
Answer: | I had the same problem - Dated August 19, 2016. Not excited if I have to replace this every 3 years or so, I must say. But that's better then it going off in the middle of the night for no reason! |
Question: | Can i mount in any direction |
Answer: | Why would you want to Mount it on an angle or upside down I really do not think the factory does that I’ve never seen it before are you serious mounted where the other one was and beside it needs to be mounted close to the floor Propane weighs 1 1/2 times more than air that’s why it’s mounted as close to the floor as it can be |
Question: | what voltage does low voltage indicator come on |
Answer: | When it goes below 12V |
Product description
The Kidde KN-COEG-3 AC powered, plug-in CO and explosive gas alarm protect you and your family from two deadly threats. The KN-COEG-3 includes 9V battery backup that provides protection during a power outage, when AC-only units cannot provide protection. By pressing the Peak Level Button you can see the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous digital display shows you the level of carbon monoxide (if any) the unit is sensing as well as if gas is present. The gas sensor is a metal oxide sensor designed to detect natural gas (methane) or propane. Temperature range- 40 degree Fahrenheit to 100 degree Fahrenheit.
Protect your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO), methane, and propane exposure with the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm. The Nighthawk is an easy-to-install unit that provides reliable protection against the dangers of CO and explosive gas. The digital display shows if gas is present indicates CO levels in parts per million, allowing you to see if, how, and when levels change.
Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In DesignDesigned for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.
The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor |
Answer: | Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much |
Question: | is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product |
Answer: | Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards. |
Question: | No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners |
Answer: | HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much |
Question: | I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas |
Answer: | Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards. |
