That leads me to say the pump failed. And no we never ran it dry and we always had clean water in the 5 gallon bucket. |

Answer: | the one i bought only lasted about 2 weeks (the case seals were defective0 , and the warranty is no good here either because the manufacturer in chine will not respond to emails ! I would suggest looking into Nemo Solar pumps. I had 1 in a well for about 2 years before it failed due to corrosive water , however the newer ones have plastic cases which should solve that problem . Installed another nemo ( the plastic case ) about 6 months ago and it doing a fine job pumping about 200 gallons per day for cattle water . I highly recommend them even tho they cost a little bit more than the farm and ranch . The farm and ranch will only barely function on 12 volts also. |

However. A back up battery is not cost efficient. It seems you have mis-understand the solar products are supposed work during the sunlight. |

Answer: | The pump I bought pumps AIR from above ground, into the water. It is a pond aerator. The advantage it provides over a water fountain is that since it doesn't suck pond water into its mechanism, it will never clog up like a water fountain might. It also takes less power to push air into water than to push water up into the air. This will last longer. But it isn't designed to be pretty... and it isn't designed to move water from a low end of a pond to a higher end of the pond. Its priority is to oxygenate the water... which helps reduce algae. |

Answer: | Remember there can be a lot of loss of flow when pumping water and it adds up fast. For instance this pump is 1/2" output so you might think there is no reason to use a bigger pipe because the water flow is already choked down to 1/2" But if running more than a foot or so a 1/2" pipe will severely restrict the waterflow in either distance or height of pumping. It could be useful to run a 1" or even a 2" pipe if running over 5" or 2 or 3" up for maximum flow. Or stay with a smaller pipe if wanting to limit flow. I use a bigger pipe then add a restrictor at the end to give me the option. As an example: 5ft 1/2" gpm= 23 5ft at 3/4" pipe = 66 gpm. max. A low pressure pump could be significantly lower. The hose gets longer, the flow rate of the hose drops. A 25-foot, 1/2-inch diameter hose attached to a faucet that supplies water at 40 psi has a flow rate of 24 gallons per minute, while a 100-foot hose only has a flow rate of 6 gallons per minute. This pump is less that 40psi so these numbers will be much smaller. |
