13 best garden hose sump pump
A garden hose sump pump, also known as a utility sump pump, is a portable water pump designed for various water-related tasks, primarily in residential and outdoor settings. These pumps are typically powered by electricity and are commonly used for draining standing water or transferring water from one location to another. Here's what you need to know about garden hose sump pumps:
Purpose: Garden hose sump pumps are versatile tools that serve multiple purposes, including removing water from flooded basements, crawl spaces, ponds, pools, or other low-lying areas. They are also handy for transferring water from one container to another, such as emptying a hot tub or rain barrel.
Operation: These pumps are typically electric-powered and can be connected to a standard garden hose for both intake and discharge. When plugged in and properly set up, the pump draws water in through the intake hose and expels it through the discharge hose.
Portable Design: Garden hose sump pumps are designed to be portable and easy to move. They often have a handle or carry handle for convenience. Their lightweight construction makes them suitable for temporary water removal tasks.
Flow Rate: The flow rate of these pumps can vary depending on the specific model. They are capable of handling different volumes of water per minute, so it's important to choose one with an appropriate flow rate for your needs.
Submersible vs. Non-Submersible: Some garden hose sump pumps are submersible, which means they can be placed underwater for more efficient water removal. Others are non-submersible and need to be placed outside of the water source. Be sure to select the right type for your application.
Automatic vs. Manual: Some models are equipped with automatic float switches that turn the pump on and off as the water level rises and falls, providing hands-free operation. Manual models require you to turn them on and off manually.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the pump and checking hoses for clogs or damage, is essential to keep the pump working efficiently and extend its lifespan.
Safety: Ensure that the electrical components of the pump are properly grounded and that you follow safety guidelines when using it around water. Avoid using an extension cord unless it's specifically designed for outdoor use.
Accessories: Garden hose sump pumps often come with accessories such as hose adapters and strainers to ensure proper operation and prevent clogs.
In summary, garden hose sump pumps are valuable tools for homeowners and outdoor enthusiasts, offering a convenient way to remove excess water from various locations. Whether you're dealing with a flooded area or need to transfer water for other purposes, these portable pumps can help you efficiently manage water-related tasks around your home and garden.

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the PSI or max head (pumping vertical height) of this pump |
Answer: | A quick Google search of "Superior Pump 91250" yields the manufacturers specs. I do not see PSI listed but "Pumps will lift water up to 25' of vertical height" I belive answers your question...there is a chart on the "Performance" tab that shows 30 GPM at 0' lift and 2 GPM at 25' lift...with flow rates every 5' listed.http://superiorpump.com/products/utility/91250.html |
Question: | Does it have an automatic shut off |
Answer: | The pump does not have an automatic shut off. I added a float switch because I wanted it to pump out a sink that had a slow-running clogged drain where I had the washing machine. When the sink was mostly pumped out the float switch turned off the pump. It worked great for a couple years until I got around to dealing with snaking the drain which didn't have an easy clean-out. This is a good pump, since the sink drain got taken care of, we've been using the pump to pump koi pond water over a 5' fence to our neighbor's garden using about 150' of garden hose. The pump runs continuously for 5+ hours without issues in this process. |
Question: | Will clothes washer hoses fit on this pump |
Answer: | The pump itself fits a garden hose nicely. You can buy the attachment package listed next to it for the converter piece. It only came to around $8.00. It also comes with a larger hose. I didn't need it for my spa but if you need to empty a washer or bigger pool it seems like it would come in handy. Hope that helps. Good luck. :-) |
Question: | Can this be user to flush a tankless heater with vinigar |
Answer: | I bought the pump for this very reason. I'm not sure if it is rated to handle vinegar, but at the price I figured I'd try it and see. I have two tankless water heaters, and I wanted a pump that could clean out both at the same time and this pump certainly does the job. I have a hose that runs from the pump, into a splitter. From the splitter I have two hoses going to each water heater (one hose per water heater). Even pushing water through two hoses, it still has a strong flow, with each hose pushing about the same flow as the water hose faucet outside your house opened wide open (guestimate). The splitter I have allows me to adjust the flow rate by closing off some valves if it is too strong. For just one water heater, i would think this pump is too strong (as it REALLY moves water), but I'm not a plumber so I couldn't say for sure. If I were to do it again, I think I would have purchased the 1/4 HP pump, or even the 1/5HP for cleaning out water heaters with vinegar. I cleaned out my water heater this week for the first time using this pump. I let it run for 2 hrs, and I noticed that it got warm (about the temp of a warm-to-hot bath). I'm not sure if that is normal, but thought I'd let you know. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the PSI of this pump? ...Or what height does it pump up water? I don't see that spec |
Answer: | I have re-read the documentation that accompanies the pump and nowhere does it state PSI or head (height) capability. My experience with draining a 500 gallon holding tank: discharge is not high pressure, less than a hose connected to the house; it will pump at least an 8' head. The pump did not deliver 2500 gph. |
Question: | Anyone use this for dirty water and how did it handle it? Did the debris pass thorough or clog it |
Answer: | The first thing is what you mean by "dirty", that's the problem. I have used this pump for very dirty water full of leaves, branches, and muck and it definitely clogs without the modifications I describe following. The main thing that restricts what passes through this pump is the size on the intake port on the bottom of the pump which is only a little over an inch. The port has to be kept small to maintain the vortex inside the lower bell of the pump. It is the vortex that moves the water, not the impeller like other pumps! This means that if you have a lot of small particles, it is possible for a clog to occur at the elbow at the output port shown in the picture. More likely, however, the clog will occur at the smaller intake port. Generally speaking, anything that can make it through the intake port will exit if there is not some restriction at the output port. This means, for maximum dirty water flow, you have to do two things. First, swap out the provided elbow meant for connecting a garden hose, and attach a system of standard 1 1/4" pvc pipe from your local hardware store. If you want to connect to a hose, use an adapter at the end of the pvc pipe (or better yet, use a flexible large diameter discharge hose sold on Amazon). The second thing you need to do is prevent objects larger than the intake port on the bottom of the pipe from trying to enter the pump (such as leaves, etc.) To do this, place a metal 1/4" or 1/2" metal screen across the bottom of the pump held in place with duct tape. Then, ideally, place a couple of 1/2" or so stick at the bottom to prevent the pump from sitting on the bottom of whatever you are pumping out. If you do both these thing, this pump is fantastic and can move a lot of water at impressive pressure for an immersible pump of it's size! Worse case, the attached bottom screen will clog and then you just have to lift the pump and sweep your hand across the bottom to remove the debris. If not do not do both of things I have mentioned, it will clog very easily due to the small intake port and if you use the restrictive elbow provided! I have used many different kinds of pumps of all types and this is best consumer type dirty water pump I have used but you need to make the modifications that I have mentioned which are very simple and cheap. I can try and post a picture of my modifications. |
Question: | Do I need a garden hose attachment or does it come with one ? Also, if there isn't a float, what kind and where do I get one? Thanks |
Answer: | It comes with 3/4-inch adjustable discharge adapter and connects to garden hoses. I unscrewed the 3/4 " adapter to fasten a pvc adapter on my pump so I was able to use 1 1/4 " corogated plastic hose when pumping water off my pool cover. It works faster with the larger plastic hose. Sorry I do not have any info about floats. |
Question: | What is the lift |
Answer: | Lift is how far ABOVE the pump it will pump liquid. example: 10 ft. lift means it will pump liquid 10 ft. above the level of the pump. Normally the higher the lift, the lower amount it will pump. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have an automatic turn on/off float switch |
Answer: | No. Part #25994310 does not need to be flashed. |
Question: | In spring our 2 floor drains back up and flood the basement. Can I set this pump on top of the drains to catch the water as it's coming up |
Answer: | It runs on 12 volts and the power lead has to be fused (1 amp) close to the voltage source, as you would an amp . Actually, you can connect it to the battery as you would an amp. It also needs to be grounded. |
Question: | Can I use a pool vacuum hose with this? Is a garden hose the only thing to attach for outflow |
Answer: | Definitely. I plan on purchasing the JLAudio Twik 86. |
Question: | How high or how many feet of garden hose can this pump push |
Answer: | This unit is specifically designed to work with factory audio. Factory radios use crossovers to make the system have less bass or higher highs. This device is designed to return the sound to the normal levels that after market radios already offer. Therefore, It is not necessary with aftermarket head units. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I’m pumping out ground water under our in-ground trampoline. It’s no where near pumping 1200gph. Any idea why |
Answer: | It's 1200gph measured at the discharge port of the pump, but that number drops significantly depending on the length of the hose. The longer the hose, the lower the gph. |
Question: | Is this pump sensitive to temperature and if so what is the safe temp range of water to flow through it |
Answer: | I used it to pump out water in my in ground swimming pool this winter. The water temp was just above freezing and the pump worked great. |
Question: | If left plugged in amd sitting on the basement floor will it automatically start pumping when it senses water over 1/16" deep |
Answer: | I don't know if it is automatic or not, but the way we do it is 1) set it in the water with the hose hooked up and 2) plug it. Because the seats have a dent in the hot tub it is hard for it to pump the water but it does get pretty much all of it. It is an amazing pump. |
Question: | Is this pump fairly quiet |
Answer: | Very as it stopped working the first time I used it. On way back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the maximum lift for 1/2 hp or a 1 hp |
Answer: | If you remove the hush panel on the drivers side and look up to where the steering column passes through, it is mounted vertically against the steering column with the flat side to the right and the heat sink fins on the left, away from the steering column. There are three mounting bolts. The side with two bolts are on the front side, and the top one is difficult to remove. It is better to remove the three bolts first, then remove the three connectors from the amplifier. Familiarize yourself with the locations of the locking tabs on each connector so you can remove the harness (and you'll know when the connectors are fully reengaged when you reassemble it). When you reinstall it, attach the connectors first, because there isn't enough room on the front side to do it after it's attached. It took me about an hour and fifteen minutes to do this, and I'm an experienced DIY'er |
Question: | How much current does this pump draw in normal operations? How many amps |
Answer: | This amplifier worked with my 2010 Cadillac SRX Luxury model. I recommend checking with your local Mazda dealer’s parts department to determine whether the AC DELCO 20918769 is compatible. |
Question: | how to prime the wayne 1/2 hp utility pump |
Answer: | No |
Question: | how many gallons per hour will it pump |
Answer: | No It Will Not Fit Your Model Vehicle, It Shows It Only Fits (2010-2012 Cadillac SRX), And (2011 Saab 9-4X) -FastPartsAuto |
Question: | Can you use an extension cord with it |
Answer: | A search of Amazon shows this part is incompatible. I suggest calling your Mazda dealer to determine the manufacturer and part number of the amplifier in your particular car. This is the best way to determine if the Delco amplifier here is compatible with your Mazda 3. |
Question: | does this need priming |
Answer: | I read that you can only use Bose unless you change the whole system or you won't have any bass |
Question: | Is this pump suitable for pumping potable (drinking) water |
Answer: | This fits the 2016 Traverse that already has a factory Bose stereo system. |
Question: | Can this pump be used for several hours (3+) straight provided there's a constant flow of water |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it matter if the float switch is on top of the pump or beside the pump for the pump to work properly |
Answer: | Either way works. My float died after a few months. I had to transfer one off an old pump. |
Question: | how high will it pump water |
Answer: | My pump sits about 2 feet below the concrete in the basement, horizontal for 3 feet and up 9 ft. It is pretty powerful and should eject water pretty high, however you should install a backflow close to the pump so what doesn't get ejected doesn't fall back to the pump, and pump tries to eject in an endless cycle. |
Question: | What is the hottest temp water is this pump rated for |
Answer: | Hi there,The pump is tater for water temps up to 120 degrees. Thanks |
Question: | Can I remove the float switch as I need to use this in a bucket with holes drilled to prevent leaves to drain a pool |
Answer: | Just to be clear, I have read more than once in the responses about cutting the tethered float or removing it to use another switch or use the pump as just a utility pump without a switch. There are 2 separate plugs, one to the pump and one to the switch. The switch is not hard wired to the pump and can be removed or not used by not plugging it in. Piggyback refers to plugging the pump and switch together (they are made to plug together then plug into your receptacle) to use in a sump pit to keep water cycled out so as not to burn out the pump. If you want another switch there are many choices like a vertical float switch for limited space in the sump pit, plugs and piggybacks the same way it just positions the switch in a more narrow configuration for a smaller space. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this pump be hooked up to a battery backup |
Answer: | It pulls too much current for most battery backups, a generator will run it fine. |
Question: | how long is the power cord |
Answer: | Just received my Wayne CDU980E. I, too, was concerned with this question. Power cord measures about 90-inches (7.5-feet) from where it connects to the top of the sump motor (which is about 11-inches above the bottom of the pump). I can't find this marked on Wayne's literature for the CDU980E. |
Question: | When the pump is switched on by the floater, how long does it run |
Answer: | If there is merely water in the sump pit, you don't need this powerful a pump. This 3/4 HP pump is for handling major water flowing into the pit. When that happens in our cellar, the pump runs until it out-runs the flow of incoming water.-- sometimes for minutes sometimes for hours. We have 4 sump installations in 4 buildings. When the water table (level of the ground water in the outside ground) is high, three of these systems pump a lot of the time and pretty constantly. We have 2 pumps in each pit so if one fails we do not get flooded. Each Pump (if more than one in the system) needs to have a check valve/ back-flow preventer so it will force the other pumps to actually pump the water up and out and not allow an operating pump to to just pump back out through the other , (not then pumping) pump. The should also be placed at different levels so they don't necessariy go on at the same time, thus reserving one as a kind of back up. Of course, if there is really a lot of incoming water -- which we had when we first bought our house, it takes both pumps to handle the in flow and avoid flooding. NOw that we use the large diameter PVC piping, it works so much better that a single pump pof this size would probably be fine. It is best to pipe the pumps with real PVC pipe and in 1 1/2" or 2" size. This will increase the flow rate by around twice as much flow as the skinny (1 1/4") highresistance black curly-sided plastic pipe they often come with. Good luck and stay dry. |
Question: | when you say 'top suction' does this mean the pu,p must be totally submerged |
Answer: | The pump draws water from the "LOWER" part of the pump a few inches off the floor. It does not have to be completely submerged to draw water. When the bulb float rises enough to turn on the float switch it sucks water. It turns on before the water reaches the top of the pump. I use this one and I know. Hope this helps someone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you line up the discharge pipe from the pump with the outlet holes |
Answer: | On the bottom of the tank cover there is a "coupling" that you slide over the discharge pipe once it is screwed in to the pump. You can do this and then place the pump into the tank so you know that the discharge pipe is in the correct location. There is also a key and keyway on the tank and cover to help with locations. |
Question: | Can the black catch basin sit on top of the basement floor |
Answer: | Mine is placed directly on basement floor. The basin is plastic. |
Question: | Does this drain line require a ball valve to more closely match the rate of drain vs what the sink can supply so the float cycles less |
Answer: | The Ball valve is not needed, but adds convenience in case one needs to service the unit. The back flow of water that is above can still flow back from the check valve. |
Question: | Can I vent this with a simple studor vent air admittance valve |
Answer: | Building Code P3114.8 Prohibited installations. Air admittance valves shall not be used to vent sumps or tanks except where the vent system for the sump or tank has been designed by an engineer. |
