12 best sump pump battery backups

Sump pump battery backups are essential accessories for homeowners who rely on sump pumps to prevent basement flooding. These backup systems provide an additional layer of protection in case of power outages or pump failures. Here's what you need to know about sump pump battery backups:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of a sump pump battery backup is to ensure that your sump pump continues to operate even when there is a loss of electrical power or if the primary pump malfunctions. This helps prevent basement flooding, especially during heavy rain or storms.

  2. Power Source: Sump pump battery backups are equipped with rechargeable batteries. These batteries store power and activate the backup pump when needed. Common battery types include deep-cycle marine batteries and maintenance-free AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries.

  3. Automatic Activation: Most battery backup systems are designed to activate automatically when they detect a power outage or when the primary pump fails. This ensures that your basement stays protected even when you're not around to manually switch to the backup pump.

  4. Capacity and Runtime: The capacity and runtime of the battery backup system depend on the specific model and battery size. Some systems can provide several hours of continuous pumping, while others may offer longer runtimes.Choose a system that meets your needs and consider the frequency of power outages in your area.

  5. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep the battery backup system in good working condition. This includes periodic battery checks, cleaning, and testing to ensure it's ready when you need it.

  6. Installation: Sump pump battery backups are typically installed alongside the primary sump pump. Installation may involve some plumbing and electrical work, so it's often recommended to have a professional plumber or contractor do the installation to ensure it's done correctly.

  7. Compatibility: It's crucial to ensure that the battery backup system you choose is compatible with your existing sump pump. Some models are designed to work with specific pump brands or types, so check the manufacturer's recommendations.

  8. Alarm Systems: Many battery backup systems come with audible alarms and visual indicators to alert homeowners when the backup pump is activated. This can provide peace of mind and prompt attention to any issues.

  9. Cost: The cost of sump pump battery backup systems can vary depending on their capacity, features, and brand. While they do add an upfront cost, they can potentially save you thousands of dollars in water damage repair costs.

In summary, sump pump battery backups are crucial accessories for protecting your basement from flooding, especially during power outages or when your primary pump malfunctions. They provide peace of mind and help safeguard your home and belongings from water damage. It's important to choose a reliable backup system that suits your specific needs and have it professionally installed for optimal performance.

User questions & answers

Question: does this pump come with a battery
Answer: The pump does not come with a battery.
Question: Can anyone please recommend a battery to purchase for this unit
Answer: Make sure you get a size 27 deep cycle marine/rv battery, but pay the extra money for an AGM type. I bought the standard one for $81 at Sam’s Club, and it worked fine at first, but it died in 2 years because I did not check and maintain the water levels. After much research I realize that I should have paid the $159 price for the AGM version (maintenance free), and all would be well. I also got into the habit of unplugging the regular pump and dumping a 5 gallon bucket of water down to trigger and exercise the backup system fully.
Question: What size pvc pipe goes into the single fitting at the top of the unit, and what method are you using to attach it? Thanks
Answer: I glued a three-foot section of 1-1/2" PVD pipe to the wye-fitting at the top of the pump assemble. At the top of the three-foot section I used an 1-1/2" Fernco rubber coupler with stainless steel clamps to connect it to the drain line. You're going to love this pump. It's the quietest pump I've ever heard.
Question: Is it ok to connect to the primary pumps PVC before the check valve, eliminating the need for 2 check valves
Answer: No, you need a check valve for each pump. This happened to my sump pump installation: Over time, the flapper (acts like the valve) in the check valve deformed a little, detached from its hinge point(s), and ended up in the FRONT part of the body. This meant that when water was being pumped out of the sump, the water forced the flapper into the check valve opening... BLOCKING the flow! The check valve ended up working backwards, basically. With the water unable to flow, after enough time, the sump pump burned itself out. If two pumps are feeding through just one check valve, the same thing could happen to both pumps. Each pump needs its own check valve. It's OK for the discharge lines to merge afterwards. BTW: If you really depend of a reliable sump pump installation, spend the extra $30-$50 bucks and get a couple of industrial-strength check valves (regardless if you have a single or double-pump system). They will be "out of sight and out of mind" parts of your installation; you need to KNOW that they'll last!

User questions & answers

Question: Would this unit work with a 12v 100ah deep cycle lifepo4 3000+ life cycles rechargeable lithium battery
Answer: Yes. That battery will work perfectly with this system.
Question: have a question re. the charging light - it does not turn on at all even if the charging switch is on after installation. Is this a defect
Answer: The red light should be on if the battery is charging. The green light then goes on when the battery is charged. If the red light never goes on there is something wrong.
Question: Does the charger require an external battery management system for lead acid batteries to handle over charge
Answer: No it doesn't. It is automatic as long as you use a marine battery, deep cycle.
Question: How long should the inverter take to charge the battery
Answer: When I plugged the battery into the inverter it took about 6 hours too charge then the 2 green lights displayed which means inverter is charged. The green lights stay on

Pump Sentry 822 PS- Emergency Power for Sump Pumps by Sec America

SEC America

Based on 161 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Here's How Pump Sentry Works Battery Back Up For Sump Pumps 1200 Watt Capacity 822PS Pump Sentry interfaces between a pump and its AC wall outlet. When AC utility power is present, the 822PS charges a battery and monitors the wall outlet to detect a power outage. At the moment utility power fails, the 822PS draws energy from a battery and converts it to enable pump operation. When utility power returns, the 822PS automatically switches the pump back to AC wall outlet power. At the same time, the 822PS resumes charging the battery to return it to full capacity in preparation for the next power failure. Pump Sentry interfaces between a pump and the AC electrical supply. When electricity is available, Pump Sentry charges a battery and monitors the power line to detect a power outage. At the instant that power failure occurs, Pump Sentry draws the energy stored in the battery and converts it to AC power. This AC power is automatically channeled to the pump to maintain its operation in the absence of electricity. When AC utility power is restored, the Pump Sentry reinstates AC utility power as the prime energy source to operate the pump. Simultaneously and automatically Pump Sentry commences the recharging of the battery, to return it to full capacity in preparation for the next power failure. Designed to operate most 1/2 Hp sump pumps.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these sturdy, good quality
Answer: Yes. I am pleased with these products (battery + inverter/charger)
Question: Does the addition of another battery meaning 2 in total double the run time during an outage
Answer: Yes in theory but also depends on quality and age of the batteries your using plus how much your sump pump(s) has to run.
Question: Can you connect more than one battery for longer run time
Answer: If Amazon allow me to post the link here, the brochure tells you can connect several batteries. http://www.secamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/Pump_Sentry_2014_Brochure.pdf
Question: Can you use this model with a 1/2 HP pump
Answer: I called the manufacturer about using the 1/2 horsepower Wayne Sump I have with the 822 PS and they stated that the 822 PS could blow the fuse in the 822 PS due to it being 9 watts. I decided to buy the 1622 PS to be safe since if a fuse blew it would shut it down, so check with the company to be sure your sump pump will work properly.

User questions & answers

Question: Am I able to plug a diffrent sump pump into this system I have a 1.5 hp 10000gph sump pump 110v will this be able to handle that for a couple hours
Answer: You can plug in any 120V pump, as long as the motor rating is less than 15 amps.
Question: Can you opt-out of the remote testing they push through every 48 hours
Answer: The system self tests are not pushed to the units. The hardware initiates the self test and sends the data to PumpSpy. Even if the device is not connected to the internet, the system will still perform the self tests.
Question: This question is for the manufacturer. If my power goes out and WiFi goes out, how do you alert me of my pump status
Answer: "On Nov 5, 2019, at 11:27 AM, PumpSpy Tech Support wrote: "Hello, "If you don't want to upgrade, your current cellular service that relies on Verizon will reportedly continue until 12/31/2020." Greetings, Thanks for the prompt reply. PumpSpy: "Beyond that date, WiFi is the only service we can support." The only service you can support or the only service you plan to support? I believe PumpSpy is making a business crippling move to only have WiFi as an option. Does your internet stay operative during a major storm power outage? Ours does NOT! Cellular towers are much more likely to have power backups than ISP nodes. ISPs also vary widely in the speed and quality of their internet. Where I live 5G will probably put Frontier Communications out of the internet business with their abysmal 6-12 mbps speed. Wave Broadband, where available, has gig internet but it goes down during major power outages when PumpSpy is most needed. Cell coverage and my PumpSpy monitoring has stayed effective during these storms. My advice to PumpSpy is to start working on a 5G upgrade. Having only WiFi as an option is NOT an option for my multiple properties. PumpSpy: "We are offering customers an option to do a WiFi upgrade now and extend their product warranty. If you convert now before the end of this year we will add 5 years to your warranty. If you wait until 2020 we will only extend it for 3 years. "Regarding upgrading, there are 2 upgrade choices: "PumpSpy PS2000UG WiFi Upgrade for Cellular PumpSpy System PS1000 for $249 ( https://www.amazon.com/PumpSpy-PS2000UG-Upgrade-Cellular-System/dp/B07YSWGFW3/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?keywords=pumpspy+ps+2000+upgrade&qid=1572972309&sr=8-2-fkmr0). "PumpSpy PS2000UG WiFi Upgrade for Cellular PumpSpy System PS1000 (Controller ONLY) FOR $184 ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08124S1S2/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?keywords=pumpspy+ps+2000+upgrade&qid=1572967878&sr=8-1-fkmr0). "We recommend the upgrade with the UPS battery backup for your WiFi modem if you don't already own one, to keep your PumpSpy connected in a power outage." WiFi will NOT keep my PumpSpy connected during a storm created power outage. You are turning PumpSpy into a circuit breaker and pump health and activity monitor. Disappointed
Question: Does the backup pump test cycle even if the sump well is dry? If so, isn’t that bad for the pump
Answer: The backup pump is designed to run for short periods of time in a dry situation.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you ensure that if an internal pump valve or seal fails that it doesn't flood your basement with your own water line? Could be very quick
Answer: In case others look at this... there are several answers to this. If you are worried that a failure would cause the system to not pump out the pit then increase your test frequency. I test yearly. If you are worried then test weekly. In comparison to a regular pump this is less likely to fail because it is only used during tests. In comparison to a battery backup pump it's less likely to fail because there is no maintenance except for yearly testing (empty pit then poor in fresh water and run for a bit). If you are worried about a failure causing a leak then you need to install a fail valve. They sell them at the hardware store already installed onto stainless hoses for use with toilets, faucets, and refrigerator water supplies. If your basement is finished you need to have a water sensor alarm. There are also alarms for the pits water level. If they are too expensive you can make one from a watchdog sump pump switch and an AC siren. Just install the watchdog switch towards the top and plug the alarm into it.
Question: How much water psi is necessary for this to work
Answer: It's pressure and flow rate. Instructions want a 3/4" line, but it works fine for me with a 1/2" line and my higher home water pressure (over 60psi)
Question: Can someone please point to which specific backflow prevention devices can be used with this
Answer: You will need a ASSE 1013 device. Anyone telling you its a ASSE 1012 is wrong. I run across these all the time ( I do cross control inspections ). Be mindful that a 1013 device would need to be installed by a installer that is certified. These devices are registered and require testing every year. These are at least the requirements for Wisconsin - Id bite the bullet and do it right no matter which state your in to be honest.
Question: how much die their water bill increase when it was used
Answer: Like the electric pump it is backing up, this pump only operates when the water level raises to the point where the valve is actuated. The pump shuts off when the water level is reduced to the minimum float height. We were without power for 2 days. Ours ran on and off about every 5 to 20 minutes during at least one day of that time. The bill was not much more than normal. Each case will be different depending on the rate at which the sump pit fills and requires pumping. Under normal dry to light rainy day conditions, our pump doesn't normally run at all. I don't have to worry about battery maintenance, battery fumes, and the cost of running a continuous battery monitoring system. A battery charger/monitoring system must be on 24/7. It draws current continuously and you pay for it all the time.

Question: What thread type on fitting
Answer: 3/4” male hose
Question: Can i Connect directly to solar panel
Answer: Yes you can. A 100W 12V solar panel. The max you can load up is 4 solar panels at 100W 12V in parallel to increase the AMP Power. The more you put solar panels, the faster it spins and the more water+Pressure you will get. Just remember to add more than 4 100W solar panels. If you series your solar panels, Make sure you do not go over 24V, 20A or else you will have a burnt motor for a pretty expensive pump. Reviewed by GK HAPPY FARM. User questions & answers

Question: Why does the wayne site list 6100gph when the unit i received feom amazon clearly states 5400, in the manual and on the front of the box? help please
Answer: The CDU1000 has a max performance of 6100 GPH. We are in the process of updating all manuals, website material and spec sheets. Sorry for the confusion. Thank you.
Question: Can this be used with 220 volts
Answer: Thank you for contacting us with your question. the pump is only for 115-120 volts. I apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you again, Tina
Question: I bought this to take water out of a pool. doesn't come with a discharge hose. i need to know exactly what i need to buy to use the pump
Answer: 1.5" PVC will screw into the discharge. Suggest you don't choke it down to a garden hose. You'd be wasting the 3/4 hp. Quickest and cheapest results would be to use a length of PVC tall enough that you can lower the pump to the deepest part of the pool, have it come up a couple feet over the edge and put a u-turn at the end. Under that, you can get a 100 ft corrugated drainage tube. Get the "solid" and you can direct the output 100' away to the street or storm drain. If you keep the output 1.5" and greater, you'll get max flow out of the thing and drain your pool pronto.
Question: Can this be used as a sewage pump
Answer: No, the CDU1000 cannot be used as a sewage pump. Sump pumps are only designed to be used in residential, sump pit applications with clear ground water (no debris). Thank you.

Product description

Battery Back-Up For Sump Pumps 1600 Watt Capacity 1622PS Pump Sentry interfaces between a pump and its AC wall outlet. When AC utility power is present, the 1622PS charges a battery and monitors the wall outlet to detect a power outage. At the moment utility power fails, the 1622PS draws energy from a battery and converts it to enable pump operation. When utility power returns, the 1622PS automatically switches the pump back to AC wall outlet power. At the same time, the 1622PS resumes charging the battery to return it to full capacity in preparation for the next power failure. User questions & answers

Question: Will the 1622 work with 3/4 hp flowtec sump pump
Answer: It should but you better call the company to make sure .
Question: does anyone have experience with this product over a period of years
Answer: I've had 2 of these units for 3 years now and they still work exactly as they are supposed to. Would recommend unplugging them a few times a year for a few minutes as a "reset" (just like your router). Very happy with the product.
Question: Can this be installed in a closet? We are boxing in our sump in the corner. How much "breathing room" does this need
Answer: It would have to be a big closet- do not forget you have to attach some cables to a battery/box and that needs to vent. This should be mounted on studs and is rather large and does need some free breathing.
Question: Which battery should I buy to use with this item? Thanks
Answer: Hi Bernie - a 12 volt, deep cycle marine battery with 90 amp hrs plus is recommended.
