12 best condensing boilers

Condensing boilers are a type of water heater commonly used in residential and commercial heating systems. These boilers are highly efficient and play a crucial role in the realm of water heaters, water heater parts, rough plumbing, and tools for home improvement. Here is an overview of condensing boilers:

  1. Principle of Operation: Condensing boilers operate on the principle of capturing and utilizing the latent heat of vaporization produced during the combustion process. They extract heat from the flue gases, which are typically lost in conventional non-condensing boilers.

  2. Efficiency: Condensing boilers are highly efficient, often achieving efficiency ratings of 90% or higher. This efficiency is attributed to their ability to extract additional heat from the water vapor in the exhaust gases, allowing for more effective heating of water or space.

  3. Heat Exchange and Condensation: In a condensing boiler, the heat exchanger is designed to maximize contact between the flue gases and the water being heated. As the flue gases cool, water vapor in the exhaust condenses into water, releasing additional heat that is captured and used for heating.

  4. Fuel Types: Condensing boilers can operate on various fuels, including natural gas, propane, oil, or even electricity. The choice of fuel often depends on availability, cost, and environmental considerations.

  5. Applications: Condensing boilers are used for heating spaces, providing hot water for domestic use, and in industrial processes where hot water or steam is required.

  6. Installation and Maintenance: Installation of a condensing boiler involves proper venting and drainage to accommodate the condensation process. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and inspecting the heat exchanger, is important to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.

  7. Advantages: Condensing boilers offer several advantages, including lower operating costs due to higher efficiency, reduced environmental impact due to lower emissions, and potential savings on energy bills.

  8. Condensate Management: Managing condensate is a critical aspect of operating a condensing boiler. Proper disposal and drainage of the condensate are essential to prevent corrosion and damage to the heating system.

In summary, condensing boilers are efficient water heaters that utilize the heat from exhaust gases to achieve high efficiency in heating water or spaces. They are a key component in water heating systems, plumbing, and home improvement, providing effective heating solutions with lower energy consumption.

User questions & answers

Question: My plumber is looking for the exhaust venting for this tankless hot water heater.. Pipe for exhaust, 90 degree iPod, gasget? Help
Answer: The exhaust pipe in the manual is this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ED10Y6C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Question: Will this suffice for a 4 bathroom home in Dallas? Looking at temperature rise of ~45 degrees (110 desired minus 65 groundwater temperature
Answer: It's 10 gal/min... if you have a shower that is NOT a water saver and uses 6 gal/min... someone is going to miss out, no problem on the 45 deg rise, but we find that 130 deg is more desirable and still no problem in Albuquerque where the water temp MAY go into the 30s but most likely not less than about 45... HTH
Question: Where is it manufactured
Answer: JAPAN by one of the best hot water heater manufacturers in the world. Few if any can compair with Takagi, IMHO! Best unit I have ever installed, bar-none!
Question: what does "condensing" mean in this case
Answer: I can't stop laughing after reading the answers + there are 11 people with less clue who found the "explanations" useful... Guys, please allow me to explain the process: The condensation units have a secondary heat exchanger which takes the exhaust from regular 80% efficiency and "works" the water again in order to heat it even more, while cooling down the exhaust. Doing so the exhaust will be cool and it will condensate. This condensed exhaust will run down the vent and is gathered in an internal tray from where it goes to the condensation drain. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES is the condensed exhaust in contact with your hot (or cold) water. By re-using your exhaust (hot), the efficiency will show on paper an additional 15% -17% added to the standard 80% of a conventional water heater.

User questions & answers

Question: Hi I have a steam will that work for me
Answer: No, absolutely not. This is a combination hydronic baseboard and domestic hot water only.
Question: What exhaust vent do you need? Is there a kit I will need to go up 6to 8 feet
Answer: After an initial tuning period, this boiler is fantastic. It runs like clockwork. There are kits, but our installer didn't use one. Only pipe and two elbows at the top (intake and exhaust face downward with screen covering openings - minimum 3-4ft apart) 6 to 8 feet is not an issue, we are at about 16-20 feet vertical. As noted, you will need both a fresh air intake and an exhaust. The installation manual states 3" schedule 40 PVC. We are running higher temperatures for baseboard heating, so we opted for the more expensive, higher temp schedule 40 CPVC pipe for both. Question: Are there 2 heating circuits on these boilers
Answer: One heating and one priority domestic hot water, I have zoned these for multi zone systems using honeywell zone valves and switching relay
Question: How large a boiler do I need for an old (100 yr) 2400'sq 2-storey house? How large a tankless water heater for a 2 1/2 bath house
Answer: Not an easy answer for you. Btu heat loss is determined by geographic location, insulation values, ect

3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Water System AP430SS, Helps Prevent Scale Build Up On Hot Water Heaters and Boilers

3M Aqua-Pure

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The 3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Water System AP430SS is designed to help reduce scale build-up and corrosion - thereby helping to extend the life on hot water-using appliances such as water heaters (standard (gas or electric) and tank-less), boilers, clothes washers and dishwashing machines, and on plumbing fixtures like faucets, pipes, and shower heads. The AP430SS provides a flow of up to 10 GPM with ¾” NPT inlet/outlet connections. Scale is calcium and magnesium deposits that often form when hard water is heated. Water hardness is responsible for most scale formation in pipes, water heaters, finishes and flat surfaces, and other water using appliances. Over time scale build-up can significantly shorten the life of any water-using appliance. Also scale buildup inside pipes causes loss of water pressure as the interior gets smaller and smaller over time. The AP430SS contains polyphosphates to bind calcium and magnesium hardness minerals, helping to prevent them from precipitating out (or becoming a solid) and building up on metallic surfaces. Polyphosphates also helps prevent corrosion by forming a thin protective layer on the metal surface. The 3M Scale Inhibition Water System AP430SS is tested by NSF International to NSF/ANSI Std. 42 for material and structural requirements only. The overall single vessel/cartridge design of the AP430SS makes the 3M Aqua-Pure AP431 Water Filter Cartridge change-out easy for professionals as well as end users. Change disposable filter cartridge every 6 months or sooner if you observe noticeable reduction in water flow rate. The AP430SS is to be installed on the cold water supply line of the water heater or at point-of-entry of water into the home. Tools and parts required (not included): one ¾” stop and waste valve (compression type), PTFE tape, two ¾” male x ¾” street adapters, one ¾” compression gate valve, and pipe cutter. Read all instructions carefully before attempting to start installation. The existing shut-off valve remains in place and still acts as the cold water shut-off. This filter system has 3/4” connections. The AP430SS can be adapted to various pipe sizes by using reducing adapter on either end. Installation fittings can be sweated or threaded. Use galvanized fittings for installation of galvanized pipe. Aquapure by Cuno hot water system protector to reduce scale build up in pipes and extend life of water heater. Installs on cold water side of hot water system to inhibit scaling and corrosion.

User questions & answers

Question: Just received. It appears a lot of water bypasses the filter, can someone confirm this is not the case? Mine is just like customer uploaded photo
Answer: Not a filter, a water treatment cartridge. Rated at 10gpm by the manufacture, a small amount of the water flow is diverted down into the cartridge through a single hole in the elevated tab, in the center of the tee. The polyphosate is slowly dissolved and a small amount of treated water flows back up and out 3 small holes around the elevated tab. According to the manufacture it only takes 2-3 parts per million to treat for scale. A little bit will do ya.
Question: Does this help with water spots on glasses and scaling on bathroom fixtures
Answer: We have a lot of calcium in our well water. The heat from the hot water tank is what causes the minerals to form scale. We placed this on the cold water side of the hot water tank and noticed a big improvement in water quality, especially on shower doors and dish washer. I have changed it twice now. The first time at 3 mos because the info says it can clean up existing scale in pipes and fixtures. The bottom line is if your water is very hard that will affect how much benefit you get from this product. So will you be happy with a 50% improvement in quality? I know I am cleaning faucet screens a lot less. Still have a jug of vinegar around though! Hope this helps.
Question: GPM seems to low. I have 2 Tankless units, EACH one does 9 GPM
Answer: we have an electric tank less that is rated at 4.5 GPM. We have very hard water in this part of MA and also have a well. We have been in this house for 30 years and have had problems with pipes rotting away. When we installed the electric tank less we installed this filter also. We used the heater for a few months and than had the plumber perform the maintenance suggested by the tank less mfg. It was clean as a whistle. Our flow rate is not as high as yours but if you had one in line with each heater - i would think it would work fine. Our heater used 120A for 4.5 GPM - if yours is electric it most use a lot of power! For our use I am very satisfied with the filter and given our water quality situation and how clean the heater was - i would highly recommend this filter.KR in MA
Question: Can this system be installed with the filter in the horizontal position (copper pipe is running vertically
Answer: In my opinion, if this is collecting any particles before getting into Tankless water heater, the particle should fall in vertical direction so filter should be installed in vertical direction. I installed my filter in vertical direction before cold water is getting in to the tankless. In order to get a right answer, it would be the manufacture because they are the one who designs the filter.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the temperature output be adjusted to 105F
Answer: Sinks have aerators to slow down the water where a tub doesn't. It sounds like one possibility is that your exceeding the GPM for this heater. Next possibility, double check an measure your actually getting at least 240v at the heater, I had an issue where my unit was only getting 235v an it was causing a similar issue where only one of the two heating elements was activating. I had it set to 125F but it was coming out 100F. It was warm and without a meter I would of thought it was working correctly until I tried filling a tub. It couldn't even get the water warm. I pulled my wires out an restripped an cut an screwed them in an it fixed my problem, now its measuring around 245v. Make sure there is no copper showing after screwing down your input wires. Now filling the tub I noticed after about 10-15 seconds the water gets too hot to touch. I set it to 135F.

Stiebel Eltron Tankless Water Heater – Tempra 24 Plus – Electric, On Demand Hot Water, Eco, White, 20.2

Stiebel Eltron

Product description

"The Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Plus Tankless Water Heater features exclusive Advanced Flow Control German patented technology invented by Stiebel Eltron to automatically maintain water temperature for constant comfort. It’ll reduce flow slightly if hot water demand exceeds capacity to ensure that hot showers will never be interrupted. Tempra 24 Plus will typically use 15-20% less energy compared to conventional electric tank water heaters. Although, it’s possible to save significantly more energy depending on personal home usage habits. The difference is that conventional tank water heaters continually store hot water, and as a result, lose 15%-20% of the total energy consumed to the environment around them. This is called standby heat loss. Tank water heaters that use gas or oil are even less efficient, because they also lose heat through their vents to the outdoors. Our tankless water heaters do not need venting, and will not store hot water, waiting for you to use it. They operate on-demand to provide continuous and endless hot water when you need it, and not waste energy when you don’t. CERTIFICATIONS INCLUDE - ANSI/UL Std. 499, CSA Std. Question: Electric panel is ~50 feet from where i want to install the tempra 29 trend. is this distance ok for #8 thhn wire
Answer: The recommended wire is 8/2 and there is not a limit to distance written in the install directions. You need to check with your electrician. Make sure he is state license and insured. We have installed a Tempra 29 and our electrician ran three 8/2's approx. 30' with no question. But check with your electrician and local codes. God bless you and happy New Year.
Question: Is there an installation kit available for this? i am installing in a remote location & plumbing parts are not available? water lines are pvc
Answer: There is no specific installation kit. However, we suggest using flexible braided hose connections that screw onto the hot and cold water for the first 18" or so. These connections are easy to remove to check a filter screen or if needed to work on the unit in general. The connections are 3/4" NPT. Please feel free to call our Technical Support Department at 1-800-582-8423 ext 6 with any questions. Thank You.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: We asked the Manufacturer and they replied: "These are made in Holzminden, Germany"
