12 best roof heat cable thermostat
A roof heat cable thermostat is a crucial component of a roof heating cable system, which is used to prevent the formation of ice dams and icicles on roofs during cold weather. These thermostats help regulate the operation of the roof heating cables, ensuring they activate when the temperature drops to a certain level. Here's what you need to know about roof heat cable thermostats:
Function: Roof heat cable thermostats are designed to monitor the outdoor temperature. When the temperature falls to a specific setpoint (usually around freezing or slightly above), the thermostat activates the roof heating cables.
Temperature Control: The thermostat allows you to set the temperature at which you want the roof heating cables to turn on. This control is essential because you don't want the cables to activate unnecessarily, as it can lead to higher energy costs.
Energy Efficiency: Roof heat cable thermostats are designed to be energy-efficient. They help ensure that the heating cables only operate when needed, reducing energy consumption and associated costs.
Installation: These thermostats are typically installed on the exterior of a building, often near the roof edge or in a location where they can accurately measure outdoor temperatures. They are wired to the roof heating cables to control their operation.
Compatibility: When purchasing a roof heat cable thermostat, it's important to ensure compatibility with the specific brand and model of roof heating cables you have or plan to install. Different systems may have different thermostat requirements.
Safety: Some thermostats come with built-in safety features, such as temperature sensors that detect overheating or malfunction. These safety mechanisms help prevent damage to the cables or the roof.
Ease of Use: Look for thermostats that are user-friendly and allow for easy temperature adjustments. This is important for maintaining control over the system's operation.
Weather Resistance: Since these thermostats are exposed to outdoor conditions, they should be designed to withstand weather elements, including rain and snow.
Professional Installation: While some homeowners may install roof heat cable systems themselves, it's often recommended to have a professional install both the cables and the thermostat to ensure proper functionality and safety.
Roof heat cable thermostats play a crucial role in preventing ice dams and protecting your roof during cold winter months. They help you manage the energy usage of the heating cables while providing peace of mind that your roof is protected from ice-related damage. When selecting a thermostat, make sure it suits your specific needs and is compatible with your roof heating cable system.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be cut to match the roof size? Ex, to |
Answer: | No I can not be cut you have to buy the length of cord that you need that is the closest size to what u need and typically whatever is left over I usually coil up and leave it along side of the foundation of the house if you really only need 4 feet might I suggest heat tape instead it does the same thing and you can get it cut to the exact size you need it just keep in mind that an electrician has to wire it in and u have to remove 1 corse of shingle to install it under the shingles on the roof.....hope this helps and have a good holiday cheers:-) |
Question: | I'm assuming the orange thing is the thermostat? the manual doesn't say anything about it, is it adjustable, I can't seem to get any heat out of it |
Answer: | I am curious if you ever tried this for you chicken watering system. I am looking to do the same thing, wondering if it worked out? |
Question: | Can this be used on water lines also |
Answer: | I would not recommend it. The cord is sealed so no moisture can get to electrical wires. If you cut it there’s a good chance for it to short out or electric shock. |
Question: | Why does the manual say to unplug it when the temp is too low or too high. Shouldn’t the thermostat should do that |
Answer: | We would need the exact specifications for the "metal belt" that you are referring to. Perhaps you are referring to an aluminum extrusion covered by a sheet metal cladding? If so, please forward the specifications to us. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this with a little space heater in a greenhouse (6'X4') to keep it from freezing at night when I'm starting plants in the winter |
Answer: | I don't know why it wouldn't work. I am using it connected to a heating pad on my propane tank regulator to keep it from freezing up. Had it on for 2 months and is working fine. It was 1 degree last night and the heaters and stove worked just fine. |
Question: | Is this item a two prong or |
Answer: | It is 3 prong so it provides a ground for whatever is plugged into it. It will also take a 2 prong plug, but should be plugged into a grounded outlet, or you can use an adapter. |
Question: | I plugged the thermostat into electrical box and the light did not glow. Does the light only come on when the thermostat is activated by temperature |
Answer: | I found that when using the plug in thermostat that it does not come on, or turn off at the temperatures stated in the instructions. I comes on at a lower temperature than 38 degrees. When it is on, the light in the thermostat lights up. I think the instructions that come with the unit could be a little clearer. There is no way to adjust the temperature range. I use the thermostat in my RV trailer during the winter to turn on a heat lamp to keep a critical area above freezing. Hope this helps |
Question: | Is the power indicater light suppose to come on when unit is plugged in or only when temperature goes below |
Answer: | Robert,According to tech support, the indicator light will only come on when power is being supplied to the cable by the thermostat at 38 degrees or less.So in simple terms only when it goes below 38.Hope this helped.Have a great day!Chris B |

User questions & answers
Question: | my electric smoker controller quit working, can i use this to power and control the heating element |
Answer: | I'm not an ac tech, but Y1 is 24 volts ac. Depends what kind of unit you have. I have Lennox units with the new I-control, so went to the i-control 24 volt input. |
Question: | Can this be used to Boil water as to brew beer |
Answer: | Unless you have an outdoor compressor (or heat pump) that is more than 20 years old, it would be a better idea to use two AG3000s, or in my case, I use three AG3000s. Let me explain. The main difference between the CD1-024R and the AG3000 is the CD1 has short cycle protection in addition to surge protection. What this means is that if you have a power failure that lasts just a few seconds, the CD1 prevents your compressor or heat pump from starting right away because this "short-cycle" can damage the compressor. However, virtually all compressors and heat pumps that were manufactured in the past 20 years have short-cycle protection built in to the unit, so the CD1 would extend the delayed startup from 3 minutes to about 5-6 minutes. This is completely unnecessary, and since CD1 costs significantly more than the AG, you may be wasting money for a feature you already have. You could test your unit by tripping the circuit breaker that feeds your compressor while the compressor is running, then flip it back on after a couple of seconds. Check your compressor and see if it comes on right when you flip the breaker on, or is delayed a few minutes. I use an AG3000 on my outdoor compressor, and two AG3000s on my two stage 240v electric heating coil of my air handling unit located in my house. A two stage heating coil requires one surge protector for each 240v line (there are also three stage heat coils out there too). So doing it the way I did protects my outdoor compressor and my indoor air handling and heating unit. This is called point-of-use protection. I also have a whole house surge protection device on my circuit breaker box which suppresses voltage spikes at the mains, and suppresses to help protect all electrical devices in the entire house. Both are recommended according to the experts in this industry. I hope this helps |
Question: | Can the sensor be submerged beyond the metal portion in an acidic (pH 4.0) liquid |
Answer: | Yes it is. |
Question: | I need a switch to turn on when the outside temperature drops below freezing to activate roof heat lines to melt snow. Will this product do this |
Answer: | Aux heat will come on in the heat mode when heat pump is unable to satisfy the set temp. |

It may also be used in drains and culverts through the winter months to promote drainage. Don’t buy from companies without a human available by phone. Heat cable is technical stuff and it’s great to have solid advice on how to install it. We are the only heat cable seller on Amazon who is a simple phone call away. Phone: 877-387-4218. Eat that off shore competitors! Pipe Freeze Pro is jacketed with a commercial-grade fluoropolymer and comes standard with a flame-retardant thermoplastic interior jacket. Our 16 gauge heating wires are 200% thicker than the conductors found in cheap, constant wattage cables like EasyHeat and Frost King. Thicker conductors mean greater heating efficiency, more melting power and long term cable integrity. Pipe Freeze Pro is self-regulating, meaning it ‘asks’ for more energy as it gets colder outside and less energy when it’s warmer. The entire length of our cable is temperature sensitive such that colder areas demand more power than warmer areas. Smart stuff. The stated cable length DOES NOT include an additional 24” unheated cold lead. For example, a 6 foot cable is 6 feet plus 2 feet of unheated cord. Installation is simple. Run Pipe Freeze Pro along the pipe, secure with fiberglass cloth tape (included) every 12 inches and wrap with standard pipe insulation. Read the manual for full instructions, of course.
- THIS CABLE WILL NOT TURN ON UNLESS IT IS IN A COLD ENVIRONMENT. We’ve received a couple bad reviews from people testing the cables in their living rooms. Please don’t be that guy.
- TAPE INCLUDED: 16 feet of high-temperature glass cloth tape is included with this cable.
- HEAVY DUTY: Integrated thermostat turns cable on at 37 degrees, off at 50 degrees, greatly reducing energy waste. Cable is 8mm wide and includes a 24” unheated cord (add to stated cable length). Cable has commercial-grade outer jacket for long life and carries a FOUR YEAR WARRANTY, which is double the warranty of similar cables on Amazon. Will not short or burn out if cable is overlapped.
- USES: Use on the inside or outside of all types of water carrying pipe including copper, steel, PVC, ABS, PEX, concrete and more; can be exposed directly to water and is rated for soil contact.
