Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. | Answer: | when you get mold in the bottom of your feeder it is because the seed was perhaps wet, the birds will not come to the feeder if if you have mold you have to take the entire feeder apart, dump out the dry thistle and then the moldy thistle throw away, wash the bird feeder ( plastic tube throughly) let air dry out in the sun or in the house when the plastic tube is completely dry, refill w fresh or the dry thistle that u were able to salvage and then the birds should return i clean my feeders twice a year in the spring and in the fall i feed my birds year round ' good luck |

| Answer: | Hi. I’m not quite sure I understand your question do I am guessing here. This is an excellent feeder BUT it is for Nyjer seeds which are actually from a thistle plant, and they are teeny. Therefore, the holes/the skits in the feeder are also extremely small. You cannot put just any seed in there as the birds won’t be able to get them out. You can however use an brand of Nyjer seed that you like. Yankee Droll does make other excellent feeders for regular bird seed. I’ve had two Yankee Droll feeders and I buy the bottom tray to make it easier for birds to perch. I hope that this helps. |

| Answer: | If there is going to be freezing rain or snow (unlikely in FL) or very heavy, windy rainfall, then it's recommended that you turn off the power (there is a switch right on the feeder). If it's really bad, you can pull out the core (the battery). You just twist the perch and the perch/core combo comes out. You also do this when you need to recharge it. You can leave the actual feeder outside--just remove the battery. Having said that, we are on our second Yankee Flipper after about 15 years with the first one! That first version had no ability to remove the core or turn off, and yet it still lasted that long through Chicago-area rain/snow/wind. The only reason we replaced it is that the battery would no longer charge. That's a really long time for something to work unfailingly! You can always buy a baffle to put over the top if you feel the need. They come in plexiglass, metal or plastic. Hope that helps. |

| Answer: | If you check the actions of the birds on the feeders with your binoculars, studying them very carefully, I think you will find that most of the seed landing on the ground has been pitched out by the birds themselves and is not falling out of the feeder. I have watched this action myself. I think Mourning Doves are not well understood but they are actually quite beneficial to us. They eat all the weed seed they can find on the ground and it does not pass through their digestive systems to get deposited somewhere else. They consume grit, tiny sharp edged pieces of rock, that serve to grind up the seeds they eat the seeds thus turning the seed into energy for them rather than new weeds "for" us. I use one of these feeders myself with a tray attached underneath. The tray catches a high percentage of discarded seed and it is often eaten by other birds. A feeder tray pays for itself if you want to reduce your offerings to doves and squirrels. |

| Answer: | I am not sure. It's a very sturdy feeder and squirrels are no problem as once the spinner threw them off they didn't try again. I would suppose that if the raccoons could get it on the ground, they could pry the lid off. You might try wiring the lid on, but they would probably roll it around on the ground until the seeds fell out. You might try suspending it from a small steel cable away from anything they could climb on to reach it. If the feeder remains hanging, I think you may have a chance of keeping them out. Sorry I am not more raccoon savvy, my daughter fights they all the time at her house because they kill her chickens. |
