6 best compound mitre saw
A compound miter saw, also known simply as a compound saw, is a power tool commonly used in woodworking and carpentry for making precise angled cuts in wood, plastic, or other materials. It is a versatile tool that allows you to make two types of cuts: miter cuts and bevel cuts. Here are the key features and functionalities of a compound miter saw:
Miter Cuts: A compound miter saw can make miter cuts, which are angled cuts across the width of the material. It can pivot horizontally to the left or right, allowing you to cut at various angles. Most compound miter saws can typically rotate from 45 degrees to the left to 45 degrees to the right, with common preset angles at 45 degrees and 90 degrees.
Bevel Cuts: In addition to miter cuts, a compound miter saw can also make bevel cuts. This means the saw head can tilt to create angled cuts along the thickness of the material. Bevel cuts are useful for creating angled edges on workpieces.
Compound Cuts: The term "compound" in the saw's name refers to its ability to combine both miter and bevel cuts in a single operation. This allows you to make complex compound cuts, such as those needed for crown molding and other intricate woodworking projects.
Precision and Accuracy: Compound miter saws are known for their accuracy and precision. They have a fence and a cutting guide that help you align the material correctly for precise cuts. Many models also feature laser guides or LED lights to indicate the cutting path, making it easier to achieve accurate results.
Power and Blade Size: Compound miter saws come in various sizes and power ratings. The blade size typically ranges from 8 inches to 12 inches, with larger blades capable of cutting thicker materials. Higher-powered saws can handle hardwoods and tougher materials more effectively.
Portability: Some compound miter saws are designed for portability, featuring lightweight construction and built-in handles. This makes it easier to move the saw to different job sites or workstations.
Safety Features: Most compound miter saws are equipped with safety features such as blade guards, blade brakes, and trigger locks to prevent accidental starts.
Dust Collection: Many models have a dust collection system to help keep your workspace clean and minimize sawdust accumulation.
In summary, a compound miter saw is a versatile and essential tool for professionals and DIY enthusiasts involved in woodworking and carpentry projects. Its ability to make precise miter and bevel cuts, as well as compound cuts, makes it invaluable for tasks like framing, molding, and trim work.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the current model that is shipping type 1 or type 20. If you look up the parts diagram the type 20 has a different slide mechanism part number |
Answer: | I bought a new one today from a lumberyard and it is a Type 1. (says right on the sticker on the motor) Not sure if that means the slide mechanism is better or worse than the Type 20. I would assume it was made in 2014 because there is a "Dewalt use only" tag on the box which starts with 2014. Not sure if a "fresher" saw is a Type 20 |
Question: | Can xps be added, i know dewalt makes a kit to add it to some saws, but this model was not listed |
Answer: | mmToolparts actually sells a kit (3 proprietary DeWalt parts + their wiring harness) for less than $70. They have videos on their website that show how to install the parts on DW716, DWS779, and DWS782 saws. You will need some additional tools (torx screw drivers or torx bits, wire strippers/cutter/crimper) and somewhat mechanically inclined. Just google "DWS779 xps light kit" and they should be the top result. This might be an easier option versus going to a DeWalt service center in the post pandemic world. |
Question: | Does this miter saw come with a laser or any guiding system |
Answer: | It does not come with any laser for guidance. You may find my answer a bit crude, I've been using miter saws for many years and the best guiding system I found to work is my/your eyes. Having lasers or no lasers you still need to use your eyes to get the work piece spot on near the cutoff point. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Is there an LED cut line |
Answer: | You can add the LED light to this saw. Not a laser but a shadow light that show exactly where the saw blade will cut. I just did it last night. Parts can be had for about $70. This basically turns it into a model 780 which is much more expensive. Pretty simple to add. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a built in clamp so the wood can be clamped to the fence |
Answer: | There is no built in clamp. |
Question: | How can you attach a temporary wood fence for clamping on a work stop? It look like you can't attach on the right |
Answer: | Mounting holes are provided in all four feet to facilitate bench mounting. There are round countersunk holes for use with screws and square holes for use with the miter saw stand "carraige bolt" or M8 (5/16") or smaller bolts. Use either hole, it is not necessary to use both. Always mount your saw firmly to prevent movement. To enhance the tool’s portability, it can be mounted to a piece of 1/2" (12.7 mm) or thicker plywood which can then be clamped to your work support or moved to other job sites and reclamped. NOTE: If you elect to mount your saw to a piece of plywood, make sure that the mounting screws don’t protrude from the bottom of the wood. The plywood must sit flush on the work support. When clamping the saw to any work surface, clamp only on the clamping bosses where the mounting screw holes are located. Clamping at any other point will surely interfere with the proper operation of the saw. CAUTION: To prevent binding and inaccuracy, be sure the mounting surface is not warped or otherwise uneven. If the saw rocks on the surface place a thin piece of material under one saw foot until the saw sits firmly on the mounting surface. Be sure all blade and blade clamps are clean, recessed sides of blade clamps are against blade and arbor screw is tightened securely. Loose or improper blade clamping may result in damage to the saw and possible personal injury. |
Question: | Will the included blade cut aluminum; or is there a different blade available for that purpose |
Answer: | Yes, the blade will cut aluminum; however, is not designed for aluminum and I'm sure there are some pieces of aluminum, such as very thick pieces that could destroy the blade or the saw. Look for a blade better suited to the material you are intending to cut. |
Question: | Can I cut 4x4 stock with this in a single pass |
Answer: | Yes. That would be completely within the capabilities of this saw. I used this model to cut 4x4 for legs of a table just a month ago no problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will a 8 inch blade fit |
Answer: | Yes. You can, the saw will cut alot larger than a 2x6 laying flat. |
Question: | Would it work on a electricity of 220 v |
Answer: | Much quieter. Best saw I have ever owned! |
Question: | Will this saw cut a 1×12 with one pass at a 45 deg angl |
Answer: | Smooth. It slides twice on two sets of bars. I have used their 10" saw for years. I bought this for trim work but it will cut 2x all day. I haven't used the 10" since I bought this one. You will love it. |
Question: | Does it come with the extension arms |
Answer: | Yes you can. Use a 1/4” Masonite or plywood to bump out the fence to take care of the 1/4”. The smaller blade won’t cut all the way through if you don’t. Works fine for me. And yes it’s easier and cheaper to get the standard 7 1/4” blades than the special 7 1/2”s from Makita. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone know a dewalt vacuum dust port adapter that would work with this dewalt dw716xps miter saw? thanks |
Answer: | Adapters DWV9120, DWV9130 or DWV9150 are compatible. |
Question: | Can you put a metal cutting blade on it to cut steel tubing |
Answer: | Good question and I don't see any reason why not depending on the thickness of the tubing. I have a Dewalt chop saw I used to cut aluminum studs when I was refinishing my basement and it cut just fine with a metal cutting blade. It was a 10" vs 12" saw however. Motors and Amp rating was the same as my DW 716 Mite Saw. May want to ping someone at DeWalt or search thier web site. May not be the right thing to do but you could ask someone at one of the Big Box Home Improvement stores as well. |
Question: | on dewalt's site it says this model is 3800rpm on here it says 3500rpm is this an older model |
Answer: | On the saw that I bought 2 months ago, it says 3800 rpm on the motor casing. |
Question: | Is the only difference between the DW716 and DW716 with XPS, the LED |
Answer: | Dewalt 716 Type 20 will accept a light. You'll spend 75 on a handle, power supply, and led. MM Tool parts has the kit. The light is worth it. |
