12 best air sanders
Air sanders are power tools used for sanding and smoothing various surfaces, commonly found in workshops, construction sites, and auto body repair shops. They utilize compressed air as a power source to rapidly rotate an abrasive pad or belt, allowing for efficient material removal and surface finishing. Here's what you need to know about air sanders:
Types of Air Sanders:
- Orbital Sanders: These sanders move in small, circular orbits, making them suitable for fine finishing work. They are often used for sanding wood, automotive bodywork, and other surfaces that require a smooth finish.
- Random Orbital Sanders: These combine orbital and rotational movements, providing a swirl-free finish. They are versatile and commonly used for both woodworking and automotive applications.
- Belt Sanders: Belt sanders use a continuous loop of abrasive sanding belt to quickly remove material. They are efficient for large surface areas and heavy-duty tasks like sanding floors and rough shaping.
- Disc Sanders: These sanders have a flat, circular sanding disc and are excellent for precision work on smaller surfaces and tight spots.
- Straight Line Sanders: Straight line sanders have a linear sanding motion and are often used for sanding metal surfaces, such as auto body panels.
Compressed Air Power: Air sanders require a source of compressed air to operate. They are commonly connected to an air compressor via an air hose. The pressure and volume of the compressed air can be adjusted to control the sander's speed and aggressiveness.
Abrasive Discs and Belts: Air sanders use abrasive discs or belts that come in various grits, allowing for different levels of material removal and surface finish. The appropriate abrasive must be selected based on the task at hand.
Dust Collection: Many air sanders come equipped with built-in dust collection systems or can be connected to external vacuum systems. This helps keep the work area clean and reduces airborne dust particles, which can be harmful if inhaled.
Versatility: Air sanders are versatile tools suitable for a wide range of applications, including woodworking, metalworking, automotive bodywork, and even for preparing surfaces before painting or finishing.
Safety Precautions: Proper safety precautions are essential when using air sanders. This includes wearing appropriate safety gear like safety goggles, hearing protection, and a dust mask to protect against dust and debris. Additionally, users should be trained in the correct use of the tool to avoid accidents and injury.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity and performance of air sanders. This may involve cleaning the tool, lubricating moving parts, and inspecting and replacing worn-out abrasive discs or belts.
Size and Weight: The size and weight of air sanders can vary significantly between different models. When selecting one, consider the size of the task and how comfortable you are using the tool for extended periods.
In summary, air sanders are valuable power tools for sanding and smoothing various surfaces in woodworking, metalworking, and automotive industries. They are known for their efficiency and versatility, making them a staple in many workshops and construction sites. Proper safety precautions and maintenance are essential when using air sanders to ensure safe and effective operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this sander come with connection capability for a dust collector system hose |
Answer: | Yes, and no.... Check this out at Amazon: Bosch RS014 5" Buffing Pad I believe the sanders that this is listed as fitting are the same diameter hook-and-loop bases as the ROS20VSK just with a different mounting hole pattern of the base to the sander so it should fit, but the reviews of its performance are not great.Maybe there are other buffing pads that would work better. |
Question: | I have a Porter Cable pancake compressor. However, would I need another type of hose and fittings, to connect the sander to the compressor, besides that which came with the compressor |
Answer: | DAGS on "bosch ros20vsk 220 parts". Lots of responses. The first is ereplacementparts.com which carries it. There are also several others. |
Question: | What size air compressor is required to run this sander effeciently |
Answer: | I would say that a small amout of "cupping" is normal. As to 1/16 of an inch, I think that is a little much. Most of the sanding takes place on the outer edge of the disc. As it rotates the dust is sucked into the 8 holes in the center of the disc. In order to flatten out the disc, you would have to put more pressure than normal. My experience with this brand of random orbit sander is that the more pressure you put on the sander, the slower the disc turns. You need to have at least a moderate rate of rotation to keep putting new cutting surfaces forward and to get a decent "scrambling" of sanding marks. If your sander is older, you may want to purchase a new disc. They are relatively inexpensive. If the sander is newer you may want to see if the dealer or manufacturer will replace the disc. |
Question: | Can the disk pad be replaced with the a velcro pad and where can I get it |
Answer: | There is an adapter (part # VAC002) that will adapt the sander to standard vacuum hose sizes (1-1/4" & 1-1/2" hoses). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you use adhesive backed paper |
Answer: | I don't know why not. We wear out at least two of these sanders a year in our shop and we use them to sand wood, plastic, aluminum, and steel daily, and sometimes other types of material as well. If you sand a car this sander would not be suitable for wet finish sanding as it is not sealed for that purpose. |
User questions & answers
Question: | Is this sander a "dual action" or "random orbital |
Answer: | It's made for non adhesive paper. You can use adhesive but it tears up the neoprene pad when you remove it. If you do use adhesive paper remove it at the end of the day. |
Question: | Will this work on wooden doors |
Answer: | I just ordered a pack of Mestool 120 grit for the sander. You just want to make sure the hole pattern of the discs line up with those in the sander’s pad. |
Question: | Will it work on miner body work on removing rust |
Answer: | The replacement pad for the DWE6421 is part # N329079. |
Question: | what is the CFM that required to run this continuously |
Answer: | The cord is approximately 6.6' in length. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this to sand drywall |
Answer: | I think Amazon made a mistake. The pads I received a couple of years back, were about four inches in diameter and don't look like the ones shown in the latest photo. I'm not sure how they are attached, but as I recall, I used an attachment for my power drill that looked like a black rubber mat with an axel for insertion into the chuck of my power drill. The pads I received have a white cloth-like backing (about the texture of a flannel shirt). I think they are meant to be used with some kind of Velcro-like attachment arrangement. The trick is to keep them centered or they will wobble out of balance. |
Question: | What are the minimum CFM’s required |
Answer: | The adapter is not included with the pads |
Question: | Can you wet sand a car with this |
Answer: | The 5” is better, much easier to get centered |
Question: | Will this air sander work efficiently with Dewalt 6 gal pancake compressor |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size pad |
Answer: | Yes it can. I used the pad purchased here on Amazon. The part is "Astro Pneumatic Tool 4606 6-Inch PU Velcro Backing Pad". Works great. |
Question: | This claims to be able to work with hook and loop pads, but if I look at it at the big box stores, it looks like its adhesive backed pads only |
Answer: | It's because this sander probably needs 6 CFM of air to run it at 90 PSI. That compressor drops to much and can't make it up in time. Your compressor only puts out about 4 CFM at 90 PSI. I have a 33 gallon and it only puts out 4.9 CFM at 90 PSI so it doesn't run this tool properly. So I'm going to have to buy a more expensive sander (CRAP) that only takes about 4 - 4.5 CFM at 90 PSI. Then it will run properly. |
Question: | Is this sander good for sanding joint compound or is it to powerful |
Answer: | The 315G is Edge Version of the tool, it's similar but geared more forwards the retail channels. Some have different handle materials and a few internal differences but mainly retail packaged and branded. Please reach out to our tool technical team if you need further details 800-483-4981 option 2 then option 1 |
Question: | Can the stick pad be change over to a hook and loop pad |
Answer: | One is marketed to hobbyists and the other to pros. Otherwise they're identical. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the handle only clock to 45 degrees |
Answer: | No. It clocks 90 degrees either way. Good value for the money. I would suggest buying different sand belts the ones that come with it are not durable they will break really easy. |
Question: | What is minimum speed possible on this tool |
Answer: | I really don't know, it can go slow |
Question: | What is the dimensions |
Answer: | The overall lengh is 16" the belt is 1/2 X 18" with 1/2 X 7" sanding surface. the belt guide is 1/2 W X 1 H X 6.5" L. |
Question: | What size air tank is required/recommended to run this sander |
Answer: | This is a great tool for a vast variety of jobs. very powerful, but you at not going to run this tool very long on a small pancake type compressor. a minimum requirement would be a least 3 hp with 40 gal tank for regular home owner use. 5 hp two stage would be better. if you don't have the air this tool will not perform as intended. I hope this helps |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you change the angle of the belt |
Answer: | I started with decent 2HP connected to another small compressor and that wasn't enough, So I borrowed a Rollaire 5HP and that worked good. So I would say you need a good 5HP to run steady. I don't think you will find another DA sander that runs decent on less than that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone make a hook & loop pad for this |
Answer: | I'd say more than 7 CFM. Yes, I know, spec say 3 CFM, but it isn't accurate. My compressor generates 4 CFM @ 90 PSI and it isn't able to keep up with the tool. At 50 PSI my compressor provides 5.4 CFM - and it can't feed this tool @50 PSI as well. It's air consumption is much higher. |
Question: | Is the 300g a short throw unit /what type paper does it use stick or hook &loop |
Answer: | Yes I did use the adhesive backed paper. It doesn’t slide off that way. And the file works great |
Question: | Where is the hose available for the vacuum option on this sander |
Answer: | No |
Question: | does this have the Velcro face to hole the sand paper |
Answer: | Sorry but you'll need a 36 gallon tank with a sufficient compressor to boot to run an air sander like this. The small Porter Cable compressor is good for about 10-15 seconds the first time you pull trigger and decreases to almost nothing within a minute or two. Don't fell bad I made the same assumption and mistake |
