User questions & answers

Question: I am an older woman who uses a drill a few times a year for household projects and to remove screws. . Is this more drill than I need
Answer: Yes, it is a very powerful drill. Depending on your use I would suggest a 12 volt portable drill such as a Rigid or similar. The difference is in the torque available from each type. The corded drill, even though it has a handle for better control if the bit jams could break fingers or a wrist. The battery drills are quite capable of doing most jobs around the house or farm.
Question: Is it 220 voltage
Answer: No, 110/120v
Question: Is the pistol grip removable
Answer: if you are referring to the straight item with the black handle (they call it a 360 degree side handle), then yes, it is removable. it provides an extra two-handed grip for drilling something substantial if you are referring to the yellow pistol grip, then no, it is part of the main housing and not detachable.
Question: Does the 360 degree handle have notches that fit matching protrusions on the drill, so when you tighten the 360 degree handle drill will not spin
Answer: Side Handle:WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, ALWAYS operate the tool with the side handleproperly installed and tightened. Failure to do so may result in the side handle slipping during tooloperation and subsequent loss of control. Hold tool with both hands to maximize control.A side handle may be supplied with your drill. Side handles are included with these drills: DW235G,DW245, DW246. The side handle clamps to the front of the gear case and can be rotated 360degrees to permit right- or left-hand use.

User questions & answers

Question: when you say 12v do you mean 120 volt? I have never heard of a 12 volt drill corded
Answer: Corded power tools are rated in amps instead of volts. This way a user knows how much power they can draw without flipping a breaker. Most breakers are either 15 or 20 amp. This does operate on a 120 volt socket though. Nothing 12 volt about it.
Question: Does this drill come with a storage case or bag
Answer: It did not come with a storage case or bag when I purchased it.
Question: Would this drill be sufficient to use on a concrete wall? Our condo is almost entirely concrete, looking to hang a pot holder, pictures, etc
Answer: I would reccomend a hammerdrill instead. It is intended for drilling in concrete. They are usually function as a regular and hammer drill. One like this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0008ELQ0G/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1376105960&sr=8-1&pi=SL75
Question: Does the trigger lock
Answer: Sorry it took so long but no the trigger does not lock - but I do have to tell you - it is a great drill (actually I use it to drive screws more than anything - and I drive about 100 screws a week - I have had this for 2 months now - no problems with it and I like the keyless chuck

User questions & answers

Question: Will this drill be able to bore out 1 1/4" holes in 4x4 studs
Answer: No. There is no trigger lock on this otherwise excellent drill.
Question: Any masonary bit included
Answer: Yes and very easy to switch between forward and reverse. We have really put this drill to work and are very happy with its performance.
Question: Has anyone found a good case for this drill
Answer: Most electric (mains powered/cord) drills make terrible screwguns and this drill is no exception. The issue is torque, which is not effected much by the speed of an electric motor. Electric motors deliver almost 100% of their available torque immediately upon being energized and will produce that same amount of torque throughout their speed range (that's why freight trains, in the US, are driven by electric motors. The engines you hear are diesel electric generators which power the electric traction motors that make the train go. Without that instantly available torque the train would never move). All electric motors deliver torque like this. It has nothing to do with a brand. That instantly available torque is also what makes mains powered drills tear up screw heads, break screws, shred driver bits and cam out of the screw head to put the distinctive track marks on walls and furniture. It's also what makes mains powered drills perfect for drilling holes, which is precisely what they're designed to do. Since you can't do anything practical to change the way electric motors work the solution is to design the screwgun around a motor with less torque and lower power requirements. It doesn't take much torque to drive a screw (next to none if properly sized pilot holes have been drilled) and useful levels of screwdriving torque can easily, and conveniently, be provided by 18v-24v which can be had in a small rechargeable battery. Unless you're doing a LOT of 1/4"+ diameter hole making buy an inexpensive mains powered drill and spend the extra money on a nice cordless driver/drill and batteries. You'll get a lot more mileage for your money that way.
Question: Why is speed described as 0-1200 RPM and review says it starts at either 250 or 600 RPM? I need something with true variable speed
Answer: Stability is better with the mid grip over the pistol grip in the sense that your hand is closer to the target rather than behind the whole drill. It has better control and is easier to keep on the head of a screw or what have you. :)

User questions & answers

Question: can it drill 1/4 holes into plastic
Answer: ----Its not the drill, It's the BIT ----Hanson makes particular bits for drilling plastic, with any drill regardless of voltage, and theyre available most any good hardware store or Tap Plastics. They have a particularly pointed tip, so don't ever attempt to ever use them on wood or metal, as doing so would render it crapp for plastic use from then on. I have 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 in my arsenal, and they pretty much cover any plastic, ABS, PVC, and especially Plexi-Glas projects I encounter. Yeah, they're a buck or two higher than regular bits, but they also wont crack your pretty plexi-glas project all to hell like a standard twist drill bit will.
Question: Does this drill have a built in LED light
Answer: Yes, it has a light. But it's worse than useless. It lights the area nearby, but casts a shadow on the spot you are drilling. The glare makes it actually harder to see what you're doing.
Question: Would you recommend this drill over the DEWALT DC970K-2 18-Volt Drill/Driver Kit (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002RLR0EY)? If so, why
Answer: I had an oportunity to use the 18V when I installed the railings on my father in laws staircase. I worked absolutely great but I had to keep switching batteries and kept one on the charger. He got it last Christmas. I told myself then the Dewalt was far superior to the two brands of portable drills I was using that I was going to get a Dewalt for myself. Honestly, when I ordered the 20V I assumed it was the same as my father in law had but his was the 18V. I would be happy with either but the 20V I have is smaller in size and lighter than the 18V that he has. Plus the 20V lithium batteries last a long long time before you have to recharge but then again replacement batteries are expensive. I just used the 20V to build my garage and so far I've only swithed batteries 5 times and that includes all the siding, drywall, wire routing. BTW I use the new star bit screws for everything they are far superior to phillips and I have given all my boxes of phillips screws away; along with my two "other brand" cordless drills.
Question: Does this unit come with one or two batteries
Answer: As of March 22, 2020 the Description clearly says it comes with two batteries... "...The tools weighs 3.6 pounds and contains 2 20 volt Max compact Lithium ion battery packs "

Question: can this model be used in router table (no dust protection
Answer: yes I put mine in a stand wright away works great. Thanks DavidA
Question: What will the 2.25 HP Dewalt router do that this will not? Differences
Answer: Well it depends a lot on what purpose you are using it for. The HP claims are pretty much worthless as both will be equal in terms of mid-size routing. The major flaw the 2.25HP (DW618. I'll refer to it as "618". Whereas this is the DW616... SO, "616") has is it cannot be used in an upside down router table without blowing up bearings in it. THE 616 is fine in a table. Also, the 616 has a quick start vs 618 which is a slow start. This means the 616 is running full speed at start, while the 618 starts slow and takes a second or two to build up speed. Both have advantages, and disadvantages. The BIGGEST issue for myself and others is that the 618 motor has... well... fire problems. Lol. That motor does not like extended use and with eat up brushes like mad. The 616 might have a bit less power, but its basically unnoticeable if you are using good sharp bits. Most importantly... the 616 (the "weaker" of the 2) tends to handle a lengthy runtime without catching fire lol. Personally, I prefer the 616 when it comes to mid-range routers. It has plenty of power, even with hardwoods, and larger bits. If you are planning on closing giant bits, or surface planing, I'd recommend neither and point you to a larger plunge base style of router with much greater strength, but a much higher weight.
