11 best base routers
Base routers, often referred to as router bases or router attachments, are essential components used in woodworking and carpentry. These tools are designed to work in conjunction with a router, a versatile power tool commonly used for shaping, trimming, and hollowing out wood and other materials. Here's what you need to know about base routers:
Router Compatibility: Base routers are typically designed to be compatible with various types of routers. They provide a stable and adjustable platform for the router, allowing for precise control during cutting and shaping tasks.
Stability and Control: The primary function of a base router is to enhance stability and control while using the router. The base provides a flat and stable surface to rest on the workpiece, ensuring that the router stays level and doesn't wobble during operation. This stability is crucial for achieving accurate cuts and designs.
Adjustability: Most base routers offer adjustable features that allow users to control the depth and angle of the router bit. This adjustability is essential for achieving different cutting depths and angles, depending on the specific woodworking task.
Guiding and Edge Trimming: Base routers are commonly used for tasks such as edge trimming, dado cutting, and profiling. The base allows the router to follow a guide or template, ensuring that the cuts are precise and consistent.
Template Routing: Router bases are often used in template routing, where a template or pattern is used to guide the router along a specific path. This technique is valuable for creating intricate and repetitive shapes in woodworking.
Router Accessories: Many base routers come with accessory options, such as edge guides and dust collection attachments, that further enhance their functionality and versatility.
Materials: Base routers can be used on various materials, including wood, plastic, and even certain metals, depending on the router bit and speed settings.
Safety: When using base routers, it's essential to follow safety precautions, such as wearing protective eyewear and hearing protection. The high-speed rotation of router bits can create flying debris and noise.
Router Bits: The choice of router bits is crucial when using a base router. Different bits are designed for specific tasks, such as straight cutting, chamfering, or creating decorative profiles.
Router Tables: In addition to handheld use, some base routers can be mounted on router tables. Router tables provide a stationary platform for the router and are especially useful for tasks like edge routing and jointing.
Base routers are valuable tools for woodworking professionals and hobbyists alike. They offer precision and control, allowing for the creation of intricate designs and accurate cuts in a wide range of woodworking projects. When using a base router, it's important to read the manufacturer's instructions and take safety precautions to ensure safe and effective operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | can you set this up for a table router |
Answer: | My short answer would be yes. I'm not sure whether there are commercially available tables for it, though. You may have to build one yourself. |
Question: | What is the set of drill bits should I buy for this tool. I bought the MLCS 8377 15-Piece Router Bit Set with Carbide-Tipped 1/2-Inch Shanks and are n |
Answer: | This is a 1/4" collet router. If you want to use 3/8" (new to me) or 1/2" get a 1/2" router. I've used routers for 45 years. Own a 1/4" and two 1/2" Here's a quick guide: 1/4" router is the most widely useful, can be held in one hand for quick work, your arm doesn't get tired as fast as with a larger router. This one is good for hinge guides and door installs, laminate trimming (laminate trim bits with bearings), round over of the edges of boards or plywood. Makes a neat no slivers edge, get 1/2", 3/4" diameter cove bits (these will make 1/4 and 3/8" from the edge curves) I get these with bearings as well. (If you want less of a curve, use less depth, the curve is not symmetrical--no one will care. This is what I usually grab my 1/4" router for (I've got a Porter Cable 1/4" that's 40 years old. Can't figure out how to take it apart to replace the cord. Rather than a $60 trip to the tool repair I'm thinking of this one, vacuum dust collection is a plus). Shelf dados, usually 1/2 to 3/4" wide, is best done with a more powerful 1/2" router, but you can get by with this with two passes (overlapping) of a 1/2" straight bit. Plunge routing: always use dust collection. Freehand scroll work: 1/8 or 1/4" round bits- I don't do this, others do. If you don't yet have a router, or a specific shop need, get a 1/4". If you think you need one of those $400 router tables: don't. Make your own or buy a jointer. Figuring out how to make a router table will teach you about making jigs (you can make a fence that has finer adjustment than the fanciest most expensive one on the market) Direction of working. There's a correct direction to running a router along the edge of a board. With plywood, pine, fir, spruce, etc.. going the correct way can rip out long splinters. If you first make a very shallow pass in the 'wrong' direction to knock off the edge, then go normal depth in the correct direction, you can avoid this. (I still don't know if I want this router or not. There were 6 opened and reclosed boxes (returns?) at the Home Depot. Why?) |
Question: | can it be used for wood doors and frames for hinges |
Answer: | Yes, but it is a much better used as router than a door or frame hinge. |
Question: | Can I trim my toe nails with it |
Answer: | I definitely would use a flush trim bit. A round over or rabbiting bit might be too much. IMO |

User questions & answers
Question: | what edge guide fits plunge base |
Answer: | The DW6913 Universal Edge Guide with Dust Collection is designed for use with all DEWALT® routers. |
Question: | I just ordered dewalt dwp611. would dewalt plunge compact(dnp |
Answer: | Yes, I have the same part on mine. |
Question: | Has anyone tried to work this on a dwe |
Answer: | I have not; however, the diameter of the 6000 appears to be the same as the 611. Id you are able. Bring your 600 to a local hardware/home improvement store that sells Dewalt and see if the base of the 611 fits the 6000. if it does, the DNP612 should work. The body of the 611 just sets down into the plunge base and does not thread, so the threading is not engaged. The base just clamps onto the body of the router. |
Question: | Does anyone know if this plunge base will fit the cordless DCW600 compact router |
Answer: | Yes, they fit perfectly. I took a chance and bought the DNP612 to use on my DCW600 cordless compact router and, unless there's something I'm not seeing, they are compatible. I wish they'd just tell you that in the specs. Last time I looked, this info wasn't really available. |

Answer: | yes I put mine in a stand wright away works great. Thanks DavidA |
Question: | What will the 2.25 HP Dewalt router do that this will not? Differences |
Answer: | Well it depends a lot on what purpose you are using it for. The HP claims are pretty much worthless as both will be equal in terms of mid-size routing. The major flaw the 2.25HP (DW618. I'll refer to it as "618". Whereas this is the DW616... SO, "616") has is it cannot be used in an upside down router table without blowing up bearings in it. THE 616 is fine in a table. Also, the 616 has a quick start vs 618 which is a slow start. This means the 616 is running full speed at start, while the 618 starts slow and takes a second or two to build up speed. Both have advantages, and disadvantages. The BIGGEST issue for myself and others is that the 618 motor has... well... fire problems. Lol. That motor does not like extended use and with eat up brushes like mad. The 616 might have a bit less power, but its basically unnoticeable if you are using good sharp bits. Most importantly... the 616 (the "weaker" of the 2) tends to handle a lengthy runtime without catching fire lol. Personally, I prefer the 616 when it comes to mid-range routers. It has plenty of power, even with hardwoods, and larger bits. If you are planning on closing giant bits, or surface planing, I'd recommend neither and point you to a larger plunge base style of router with much greater strength, but a much higher weight. |

Question: | Is this compatible with PC model 1001 router |
Answer: | Yes it will work any of the full size Porter Cable routers. |
Question: | Description states "1-1/8-inch Center hole sub-base accepts standard template guides" but standard template guides are 1-3/16". Does it really fit |
Answer: | The max it goes with long 1/4 inch mounting rods is about 11 inches to the center of the bit. It comes with three different pairs of holes for the mounting rods. They are on 2-3/8, 3, and 5-1/8 inch centers. The outer ones take 3/8 inch mounting rods. The inner two take 1/4 in mounting rods. Measure the distance your mounting holes are apart ion your Dewalt router and check to see if the included 1/4 or 3/8 inch rods will fit. |
Product description
Complete your woodworking or home improvement project with ease with the Bosch Under-Table Router Base. This base is compatible with Bosch 1617 and 1618 series routers. This under-table router base has convenient wrench access above the table, allowing you to easily adjust the router's depth. Threaded holes make it easy to mount the base to a router table with the Bosch 4-hole subbase pattern, as well as router tables with the common 3-hole subbase pattern. Hardware is included to make the setup process as smooth as possible. The Bosch Under-Table Router Base has a wide, 3.75-inch opening, allowing you to use larger bits. The motor housing does not rotate during depth adjustments, and 2 additional protective devices prevent the motor from falling when the quick-clamp is released. Whether you are a professional or a DIY homeowner, this under-table router is sure to be a great addition to your toolkit.
The RA1165 under-table base is based on the durable Bosch fixed base but enhanced with an above-table bit height adjustment mechanism. The RA1165 under-table base can be mounted to virtually any table surface and common router table plates.
- NEW AND IMPROVED: The Bosch RA1165 Under-Table Router Base is the new base for the 1617/1618 series routers, replacing the RA1164
- ADUSTABLE: The RA1165 conveniently allows depth adjustment of bit height from above the table. The router base is designed for use with 1617, 1617EVS, 1617EVSPK, 1618, 1618EVS routers
- MOUNTABLE: The RA1165 base has threaded holes positioned in Bosch’s 4-hole subbase pattern and common 3-holes subbase pattern for mounting
- CONVENIENT: The wide 3-3/4 base opening allows for the use of larger bits while the quick clamp system allows the motor to be moved with ease for tool-free base changes

Question: | Does this work with this router http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/b0006a0de2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=utf8&psc=1&smid=atvpdkikx0der |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. Yes, the 16176 router motor will work with the RA1165 router base. If you have further questions please feel free to contact our Bosch Customer Service Representatives at 1-877-BOSCH-99 (1-877-267-2499). |
Question: | Can I use it with the Kreg PRS 1040 router table and my Bosch 1617 router |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. We recommend that you contact the manufacturer of the router table to verify if it is compatible with the Bosch 1617 series routers. If they are the same, yes the RA1165 will work with your table as it has the same hole pattern as the 1617EVS router. If you have further questions please feel free to contact our Bosch Customer Service Representatives at 1-877-BOSCH-99 (1-877-267-2499). |
Question: | I would like a suggestion for a plate to mount this to please? I intend to make my own router table top and would like to attach this to a plate |
Answer: | Mine is mounted to a custom 3/8 plexiglass plate With the handles removed, I was able to give my baseplate a small footprint (7x7). Plexiglass made it easy to see where I needed to drill for the hex lift opening.Someone suggested 1/4 plexiglass, which I think *might* flex slightly under the weight of this router. Several years ago I used 1/4 plexiglass on another router and got that result -- HOWEVER, it may be worth a shot. With the smaller 7x7 footprint, there may be no flex. |
Question: | CanI use this RA 1165 Base with my Porter |
Answer: | Nope. The mounting pattern is the same. The 10-24 screws are the same. The motor diameter is the same. However, there are three issues. 1) there is a pin in the base for which there is no slot in Porter Cable motor the motor won't slide past. 2) there are pins on the Porter Cable motor that do not slide past the 'bottom' opening of the base (they do slide in the 'top', so apparently the bottom is tapered and, even if you file pins or whatever... 3) the height adjustment mechanism on the base goes into one of 3 notches in the Bosch router motor. The Porter Cable motor does not have those notches and so the height adjustment purpose is lost |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fit the Dremel |
Answer: | I'm not sure |
Question: | Will it fit Milwaukee rotary tool |
Answer: | You sure can. I cut circles and turned some outdoor lighting colors with them. |
Question: | Will this fit my battery operated Dremel |
Answer: | I use then for landscape spot lights during Christmas. They do not melt but some do warp from the heat, but I use them year after year. They do lot become unusable. |
Question: | Hello, would this be useful in woodworking for making dovetails; cleaning out the waste areas. And are the depth stops precise and solid?Thank You |
Answer: | I used them on a ParCan64 and they worked fine. Depending on how long the light is on, they do have a tendency to warp however, but I assume that's typical of any gel material. Just make sure to remove the thin clear protective film from BOTH sides of the gel. That helps a bunch with clarity. |
