14 best air framing nailers
Air framing nailers are powerful and essential tools commonly used in construction and woodworking projects. They are a type of nail gun designed for driving large and heavy-gauge nails (typically 2 to 3.5 inches in length) into various materials, primarily wood, for tasks like framing, sheathing, and building structural components. Here's what you need to know about air framing nailers:
Power Source: Air framing nailers are pneumatic tools, meaning they are powered by compressed air. To operate them, you'll need an air compressor that supplies the necessary air pressure. This setup provides consistent and reliable power for heavy-duty nailing tasks.
Nail Sizes: These nailers are capable of driving nails of various lengths, with the most common size being 3.5 inches. The nails used are typically wire-collated or paper-collated and come in strips or coils, allowing for efficient and continuous nailing without frequent reloading.
Framing Applications: Air framing nailers are primarily used in framing applications, including the construction of wooden structures such as houses, sheds, decks, and more. They excel at quickly and securely fastening studs, joists, and other structural components.
Types of Nails: These nailers can use different types of nails, such as common nails or clipped-head nails. The choice of nail type may depend on local building codes and project requirements.
Depth Adjustment: Most air framing nailers come with depth adjustment settings, allowing you to control how deep the nails are driven into the material. This feature is crucial for achieving the desired level of nail penetration without damaging the workpiece.
Trigger Mechanism: Air framing nailers typically have two trigger modes: sequential and bump firing. Sequential firing requires you to press the trigger for each nail, ensuring precise placement. Bump firing allows for rapid nailing by simply holding down the trigger and bumping the nailer against the material.
Safety Features: These tools are equipped with safety mechanisms to prevent accidental firing, such as a safety tip that must be in contact with the material before the nailer can be activated.
Comfort and Ergonomics: Air framing nailers are designed with ergonomic handles and grips to reduce user fatigue during extended use. They are also relatively lightweight compared to their corded or cordless counterparts.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep air framing nailers in good working condition. This includes lubricating the tool, cleaning the magazine, and inspecting for wear and tear.
Safety Precautions: Users should always wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses and hearing protection, when operating air framing nailers. Additionally, they should follow manufacturer instructions and safety guidelines to prevent accidents.
In summary, air framing nailers are powerful pneumatic tools used extensively in construction and woodworking for fastening large nails into wooden structures. Their efficiency, speed, and precision make them indispensable in tasks involving framing and structural work. Proper maintenance and safety precautions are essential when using these tools to ensure safe and reliable operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | will it take any brand of nails |
Answer: | I have used two different brands so far. As long as the nails are plastic coated, 21 degree I believe any brand would work. The best prices I have found on nails is at harbor freight. 2500 nails for around $28. I have used 2 1/2" and 3 1/2" |
Question: | How come just below the nailer specs they say "often bought with this product"....22 degree nails....not |
Answer: | I used some of the 22 degree without a problem. I've used Bostich guns for 30 years prior to this gun & this is as good as any I've used.t's a great nailer |
Question: | do the nails have to be plastic coated |
Answer: | Plastic coated? No. But I do believe they have to be Plastic Collated, that is, they need to be bound together with plastic. I'm not sure if paper collated nails will work. |
Question: | What kind of air compressor do you recommend for this nailer |
Answer: | It really depends on how you're using it. If you're intermittently nailing with in and not imitating a machine gun- you can use a pancake or similar small compressor. The working pressure of the nailer is 70-115 PSI. I run mine at 100 PSI. Any portable compressor should be able to hit that pressure. The real question is duty cycle. If you're nailing every few seconds then you'll need a compressor capable of keeping up with the volume of air being consumed OR you'll have to slow down until your compressor stops running before firing the next nail. I run mine on 2 different compressors and don't have any issues- one is a 40 gallon shop compressor- the CFM is infinite compared to the gun. The other compressor is 2.6 CFM. I don't rapid fire when I'm using it and I can fire several nails before the compressor has to cycle. As long as you're not continuing to fire when the compressor is running you should be OK. |

Numax 21º Full Head Framing Nailer
It's time to tackle a new project - and we have just the tool to get it done. The SFR2190 is perfect for framing, but did you know you can also use a framing nailer to install sub-floors, roof decking, wood fencing, sheathing, and more? We designed this nailer with you in mind, so it has all of the premium features you need to get started.
Step 1: Choose Firing Mode
Your framing nailer comes with a black single-fire trigger already assembled. This is the best choice if you haven't used a framing nailer before, or if you want accurate nail placement.
Follow the manual instructions to install the red bump-fire trigger if you want quick successive firing.
Step 2: Connect to Compressor
Set your compressor to 70 PSI and use the quick-connect fitting on your air hose to connect your framing nailer. If you have a really dense material, you can increase the pressure up to 115 PSI.
Put a few drops of oil into the fitting before connecting to a compressor to keep things running smoothly!
Step 3: Load Nails
Pull the side lever back along the magazine until it snaps into place.
Drop the nails into the open channel on the top of the magazine. The angle of the nails should match the angle of the nose of the nailer.
Lift the lever at the back of the magazine to release the side lever and secure the nails.
Step 4: Adjust and Go!
This nailer is loaded with features that let you customize for any project. Change the depth adjust, 360º air exhaust, or remove the no-mar tip for extra holding power.
Pro Tip: Use piece of scrap material to test out your nailer before starting on the real thing!
21º Plastic Collated Full-Head Framing Nails
A 'plastic collated nail' just means that the nails are held together with a thin strip of plastic. They are great for DIY projects because there are no issues with glue or sharp pieces of metal flying around when you're working. We suggest you use 21º nails for the best performance, but the SFR2190 can use any nail from 20º - 22º. The magazine fits nails from 2" to 3-1/2" long and is compatible with any generic brand, which is perfect if you have nails left over from other projects! If you don't have any leftover nails, we've listed some fasteners here that have worked for our customers in the past.

User questions & answers
Question: | Any suggestions on a pancake compressor for these guns |
Answer: | Mines not a pancake compressor, but it is around the same size. I have a 2.6 gallon 2 HP compressor that works beautifully with these guns. It fills to 120 psi, and I have a regulator on the compressor that allows 80-90 psi through, depending on the gun I am using at the time. I can usually shoot 20-30 nails before it has to get more pressure built up, but never dropping below 90 psi. Since the tank is so small, it takes only seconds to fill again. I'm not sure what the rules are on linking to other items, but I bought the compressor off Amazon. |
Question: | should you use a water separator or oiler with nail guns |
Answer: | The only specification with the Freeman nail guns is to provide oil to the system. So I have only been oiling since water is not a problem in the air system I'm using. Some of the air supply systems I have used previously needed a water separator. If you are not sure about the amount of water in your system a water separator might be a very good addition. |
Question: | Has anyone had trouble with these nail guns working right |
Answer: | I have been using my framing gun 3 days out of the week as I continue to remodel my house. I have used the 15 gauge and 18 gauge guns just as much without any problems. I don't know if it's related to the setup and continuos maintenance but I have a filter on the compressor and use the air tool oil. I never exceed 120 psi on my framing gun and I adjust to 75 to 90 for the other guns. I continue to have good service from these tools. |
Question: | what kind of nails does it use |
Answer: | I use Hitachi fasteners. GEt mine at Lowe's. Used the Stapler and Angle Finish Nailer today. Built our 16'x16' deck with the Framing nailer. Great set of tools. User questions & answers
Question: | I understand this does not come with any air fittings, so what are people using? 1/4" fittings with 3/8" hoses or 3/8" fittings with 1/2" hoses |
Answer: | This comes with s reducer bushing which I used and am using 1/4" fitting and 1/4" hose without any issues. |
Question: | Is any of the paslode make for plastic collated nails |
Answer: | No. All paper. |
Question: | Nail gun misfires why |
Answer: | When you load nails into the magazine, don't let the magazine slide ram into the nails. It seems a lot of people think it is ok to release the slide at the bottom without guiding it with there hand. The speed and momentum of the slide, unattended will crush the paper back between the nails and cause misalignment when it reaches the firing mechanism. Which results in many misfires. Straight nail magazines will misfire much less. |
Question: | Can this be used for baseboards or doing cabinets |
Answer: | The smallest nail is 2" x .113 -- definitely not for cabinets or any finish work..... |
- Uses 21 degree 2 inch to 3-1/2 inch full round head plastic collated framing nails
- Tool-free depth adjustment for precise flush or countersink nailing

User questions & answers
Question: | It works whit a plastic strip |
Answer: | No. 2 completely different cameras. Yours I believe is a 20MP, the w80 is a 7MP. Also your battery is a BN1, not BG1 |
Question: | This item made in usa |
Answer: | Not sure, is your item a Sony, first of all, and second, look at your battery that is already in your camera and see what the # is on the actual battery. That is how I knew it would fit mine. there is a number on the battery itself and that will confirm if it will fit.. thank you - if it does fit your camera, you will not regret getting this.. I love it; and the battery life is so much stronger .... and I love that you can charge the batteries in your vehicle on the car charger!!! it is simply the best thing!!! |
Question: | I bought this gun i charged the battery and i put in 30 degree plasic strip nails and its not shooting. Whats going on |
Answer: | I’m not sure. The bottom of my camera where battery goes says 3.6 v so check your camera. I don’t have my original battery to check. |
Question: | Does it sink nails in engineered lumber |
Answer: | You can plug the charger into a wall outlet or into the power outlet in a car. However make sure that for the sony batteries you turn them over when you plug it into the charger . This means the rounded sides are down and the rear of the battery is up. Otherwise the batteries will not charge. Other than that Ihave used the batteries since January and they work well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This nail gun is for 21 degrease. ? Or for the convencional framing nails |
Answer: | 21° and 30° are both conventional framing nails. But this is a 21° nailer. |
Question: | Just to make sure, the cordless nail only does bring a battery, fast charger, bag, and safety glasses |
Answer: | Yes, and an M5 Allen Wrench. The Fast Charger is the UC18YFSL and it will charge the 3.0 Ah battery in 45 min. There is a Rapid Charger (UC18YSL3) that charges the same battery in 30 min. |
Question: | Garantia pistola |
Answer: | We offer a 60 day warranty. Hitachi offers a one year from date of purchase. All warranty issues after the first 60 days must go directly through Hitachi. Have a great day. |
Question: | Will this gun dry fire? I just bought it and charged the battery but it doesnt fire. Does it have to have nails in it to fire |
Answer: | No it will not, nor should you try to dry-fire a nail gun. It's generally very bad on the tool. It requires about three or four nails in it to fire, depending on the size of the nail. Which means that once you us it, the gun is NOT EMPTY just because it won't fire the last nail or two; there is every chance that if you drop it or kick it out of the way it will manage to fire one of the remaining nails. Always treat this nail gun and any other nail gun like it's ready to fire. |
