16 best wood lathe
A wood lathe is a specialized machine used in woodworking for shaping and turning wooden objects. It is a type of lathe designed specifically for working with wood and is commonly used by woodworkers, artisans, and hobbyists to create various wooden items like bowls, spindles, table legs, and decorative pieces. Here are some key points about wood lathes:
Basic Operation: A wood lathe consists of a motor that drives a spindle, which holds the piece of wood to be turned. The woodworker uses various tools, such as gouges and chisels, to shape and cut the wood as it rotates on the lathe.
Turning Process: Wood turning involves spinning a piece of wood on the lathe while a tool is applied to the wood to create shapes and designs. The woodturner controls the speed of rotation and the movement of the cutting tools to achieve desired results.
Types of Wood Lathes:
- Benchtop Lathes: These are compact and suitable for small to medium-sized projects. They can be placed on a workbench.
- Floor Lathes: Larger and more powerful, floor lathes are used for bigger projects and can handle larger workpieces.
Accessories: Wood lathes often come with accessories like faceplates, chucks, and steady rests to hold and manipulate the wood effectively.
Safety: Safety is essential when using a wood lathe. Operators should wear appropriate safety gear, such as goggles and a dust mask, and be cautious when using sharp cutting tools. Properly securing the workpiece is crucial to avoid accidents.
Wood Species: Different types of wood can be turned on a lathe, including hardwoods like oak, maple, and cherry, as well as softwoods like pine and cedar. The choice of wood depends on the project's requirements and the desired finish.
Finishing: After turning, the wooden piece may require sanding and finishing to achieve a smooth surface. Woodturners often use sandpaper, stains, and finishes like varnish or wax to enhance the appearance and protect the wood.
Artistic and Functional: Wood lathes are used for both functional and artistic purposes. Woodworkers can create utilitarian items like table legs and handles, as well as decorative pieces like intricate bowls and sculptures.
Woodturning Community: Many woodworking enthusiasts and professionals engage in woodturning as a craft and art form. There are clubs, workshops, and online communities where woodturners share their knowledge and showcase their creations.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the lathe, such as keeping it clean and well-lubricated, is essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance.
In summary, a wood lathe is a versatile tool in woodworking that enables craftsmen to transform wooden blanks into a wide range of functional and decorative objects through the process of wood turning. It requires skill and precision to operate safely and achieve desired results.

Question: | Will 1221 tail stock accept #2 Morse taper drill chuck |
Answer: | Yes! Just be sure that the tail stock hole and morse taper are clean, otherwise the #2 morse taper can be difficult to remove... |
Question: | has this lathe have a indexing head |
Answer: | William, yes this lathe has an indexing head. I have not yet used the feature but it is done with a spring loaded pin which you lock into anyone of 24 positions. The spring loaded pin in screwed in once the pin is set to hold it in place.Rich F |
Question: | Is this Ron Swanson approved |
Answer: | Yes, Ron personally blesses each unit as it’s loaded onto a truck. |
Question: | Do you need to move a belt to change speeds? Or is there a dial or switch |
Answer: | This lathe has a variable speed controller, so the speeds may be changed using the simple rotating knob. To provide speed ranges to suit any situation, especially for the more experienced turner, there is a three step pulley. This arrangement allows the variable speed controller to adjust speeds from 60 to 900 rpm on the low step of the pulley, 110 -1800 rpm on the 2nd step (medium), and a high speed range of 220 -3600 rpm on the the 3rd step. The belt need only be changed if you want to move to a different range of speeds. This is a very simple process. |

Directions
Melt 3 tablespoons of the butter in a small saucepan. When melted, remove from heat, add the freshly chopped herbs to the butter, and gently stir. Spoon the herb butter onto the bread slices, using the back of the spoon to smear evenly.
Arrange the buttered bread slices on a baking sheet and place in the oven for 5 minutes, or until toasted and golden.
While the bread is toasting, heat a medium cast-iron skillet. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter. Gently crack the eggs into the skillet and cook for 2 minutes. Using a spatula, flip the eggs over and cook for another 2 minutes.
Remove the bread from the oven. Place an egg atop four of the bread slices. Arrange a few of those delicious tomato slices atop each egg. Close each sandwich with the remaining slices of herby-buttery toasted bread. And enjoy!
Directions
Place the plums, cut side down, in a baking dish. Sprinkle with 3 tablespoons of the dehydrated whole cane sugar.
In a food processor or high-powered blender, blend together the remaining 3 tablespoons of dehydrated whole cane sugar, eggs, milk, flour, lemon zest, vanilla, salt, and nutmeg. Blend for 1 minute, or until frothy and well combined. Pour the egg mixture over the plums.
Transfer the dish to the oven and bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until fragrant and golden. The clafoutis will puff up as it cooks so you can tum on the interior oven light, pull up a chair, and watch the magic happen. Not that any sane person would do such a thing. Ahem.
Maple Soda Bread with Raisins:
There is no limit to what can be tucked inside dried fruits, chopped nuts, toasted coconut. Just don’t expect the loaf to last for more than a few minutes!
Creamy Chicken Pasta with Shallot and Basil:

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a chuck that is 1"-8tpi female thread (nova 48111), it doesn't fit on this lathe. what adapter should i buy |
Answer: | Buy a 3/4" 16 TPI to 1" 8 TPI adapter. If you further questions go to http://www.woodturningz.com/downloads/w1704_ds.pdf for the specs on this machine. |
Question: | is there an adapter for the face plate for mounting live center chucks? I bought one but won't line up with holes |
Answer: | I'm not sure if they make the adapter to mount on the face plat. I have a 2" diameter three jaw, self centering scroll type chuck that i bought from Amazon that ihave used that works great, but i think that the holes in the face plate is for mounting a backing block to the piece of wood stock to turn a bowl. It says in the manual that you glue the block to the wood your turning and use the holes to screw the block on to face plate. Hope this helped. |
Question: | What size wood stock can it hold? How about something like 12'' long by 8" wide piece of wood |
Answer: | The length it will hold will be dependant upon what chucks you have in the head and tail stock. The bulkier the chucks, the shorter the length it will handle. I'd say it will hold 12" lengths unless your chucks are sizable. I wouldn't try more than 4" width stock unless it was short. Although the lathe may hold the stock, it would be too much for the motor. The intended purpose of this lathe is to make small things like ink pens, Christmas ornaments, small toys like tops or yo-yo's and tool handles etc. If you want to mount 12" X 8" stock you should be looking at full sized lathes. |
Question: | is there anyway to secure to a bench |
Answer: | Yes. It has has three holes in the base that you can bolt it down with. I bolted mine down on a metal stand. It holds it down real solid. Mine is the Shop Fox W1704 also. It is well built. I really like mine. Hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you add an extendion table on it to turn long spindel legs |
Answer: | Yes! You just can't buy it on amazon..rockler and woodcraft sell them for around $150. |
Question: | Is it a Morse taper |
Answer: | Yes both the head stock and tail are #2 |
Question: | what is needed with this lathe for pen turning |
Answer: | Basically, you will need a 7mm MT2 mandrel and your tools. When you order your pen kits, make sure you get the bushings and drill bit. Depending on how you finish the pens, you may need a buffing system. For acrylics, get a set of micro pads, they really bring the shine out. I also use a "french polish" and shellac to put a lasting hard coat on the finished product. Good luck and enjoy the lathe. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the wheel system included with this |
Answer: | No, the mobile wheel are $500 extra but Laguna had sales on their machinery several times a year. I would wait until they are 10% or more off. I am very pleased with the mobile base and have had to use it several times. I like that you can jack the lathe up with a foot pedal, move the lathe to your desired location, then let it rest on the foot pads that are provided with the lathe. The wheel accessory will add to the length of the base by approximately 2' if available space is to be considered. An accessory that I purchased with the lathe was the light of which I have yet to use. |

Question: | Does this lathe have reversible turning |
Answer: | Absolutely! Just be sure to get a chuck that is also capable of reverse turning. |
