13 best thickness planers
A thickness planer is a power tool commonly used in woodworking and carpentry to create uniformly thick boards or surfaces from rough-sawn or uneven wood. Here's some information about thickness planers and their related aspects:
Functionality: A thickness planer is designed to reduce the thickness of a piece of wood while ensuring a smooth and consistent surface. It takes rough, uneven lumber and processes it to a desired thickness.
Operation: The operation involves feeding the wood through the planer's cutting head, which contains rotating blades or cutters. The blades remove material from the wood, resulting in a smooth and even thickness.
Adjustability: Thickness planers typically have mechanisms to adjust the cutting depth, allowing you to choose the desired thickness for the wood. This ensures precision in achieving the thickness required for your woodworking project.
Jointers vs. Thickness Planers: While jointers are used to flatten one face and straighten an edge of a board, thickness planers come into play after jointing to achieve a consistent thickness across the board.
Usage in Woodworking: Thickness planers are crucial for creating precise thicknesses for various woodworking projects, such as making furniture, cabinets, flooring, and more. They contribute to achieving a professional finish.
Safety Measures: Safety is paramount when using a thickness planer. Users should follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate protective gear, including safety glasses and hearing protection. Also, it's crucial to follow proper techniques to prevent accidents.
Integration with Woodworking Workflow: Thickness planers are often integrated into a larger woodworking workflow, working alongside other tools like table saws, jointers, and sanders to create finished pieces.
Portable vs. Stationary: Thickness planers can be portable or stationary. Portable ones are more convenient for job site work, while stationary models are heavier-duty and ideal for a workshop setup.
In the realm of power tools and tools for home improvement, a thickness planer is indispensable for achieving precise and consistent wood thicknesses, ultimately contributing to the quality and aesthetics of woodworking projects. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this machine the same as the 735 w/o the extra blades and infeed and outfeed tables |
Answer: | Yes it is the same as the standard 735. As to the ware on the blades - I've planed over 300bf in the 6 years that I've had this unit. I missed a label staple on the end of a board and now have a 1/32nd hairline strip that shows and I easily clean up with a scraper. I also purchased an extra set of HSS (high speed steel) knives and put the money out ($158 for the set) for carbide edged which I only use on the last phase of the construction. I've got an older 13" planer that I use strictly for rough plane jobs and paint and varnish removal when I recycle older woodwork. |
Question: | How much thickness does this take, when used just for finishing? i have ok smooth oak in 13/16", would like it ++smooth but can't give more than |
Answer: | You can take as little or as much off as you want. It is measurable down to about 1/64" but if there is any cupping or warping within the board that may vary a bit. I would recommend a random orbital sander going up to 320 grit to get a ++smooth surface |
Question: | How easy is it to change blades on this planer? Thanks |
Answer: | Easy, about 10-15 minutes: 1) Remove four 5/32nds" headed screws to remove the top yellow cowling. 2) Remove 3 red thumbscrews to remove the black dust shroud - clean out any blocked wood chips. 3) Remove eight 5/32nds" headed screws on each of the three blades. 4) Flip the blades, or sharpen if they've already been flipped. 5) Reassemble in the reverse order. If using a power drill with a 5/32nd inch allen wrench head (e.g., https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VH7ZQGC or something similar), set the drill on medium torque and it will take about 10 minutes. (If you manually unscrew the screws using the T handled allen wrench it will take twice as long.) If careful (having heard of the others stories), it doesn't seem hard to to remove/replace the screws with enough torque to seat them properly, but not so hard that they get struck. I'm planing very hard madrone wood, and the blades have lasted about 150-200 lineal feet of wood that is about a foot wide before needing replacing. Use the #1 (slow) feed speed for hard woods - I didn't know about this until reading the manual... |
Question: | Does this planer have a 2.5" or 4" dust ejector port? Thanks |
Answer: | It has a 2.5" port with a 4" adapter. Follow the useful advice from the other folks, use the 4" adapter with a 4" hose/duct. Cheers 🥃 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can a Shellix cutterhead be installed on this unit |
Answer: | We have not tested the Shellix with this model. Therefor, we cannot recommend it. |
Question: | I want to know if this machine have two blades |
Answer: | what is the blades for 2017 50-ho 105624 serial number |
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | Manufactured in China. |
Question: | I live in Bulgaria and our electrical supply is 220 Volt, can I work with this here |
Answer: | Yes you can. I have taken quite a few 120 volt appliances to Europe and used a transformer to step up the voltage. Voltage is NOT the concern. Europeans use 50 cycle AC. In the US we use 60. So motors will run a bit slower but they will work. Conversely, if you bring a European motor appliance to the US, they will run faster and probably burn out the motor. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried planning off paint on cedar with this machine? I have hundreds of feet to recycle |
Answer: | yes. I've removed paint and finish with this.. not on cedar, but on mahogany and oak. However, do keep in mind that this will greatly impact the working life of the blades. But that's a small price to pay for such convenience. I say go for it. You'll love the result and it sure beats sanding or scraping with a card scraper. |
Question: | Can the in-feed and out-feed rollers or carriage lock be adjusted to reduce snipe |
Answer: | Make the last or final pass a very minimul cut depth ie. 1/64. This helps with snipe. The bigger the cut, the more snipe you will get. Make sure the material is support flat against the table as it begins the cut, and on the exit table as well. The pressure rollers tend to make the board 'tip' as it enters and exits (this is typical in any planer, even the big industrial ones found in mill houses). As far as waxing the tables, i much prefer to use a table top silicon type lube usually sold in spray cans at your local wood supply. These leave a non build moisture resistant film that will not only make the table very slick, but leave no waxy residue that can transfer to your lumber and cause finishing issues. Wax that transfers to your lumber can act as a release agent when applying typical lacquer base or poly type finishes. Last but not least, some snipe is considered acceptable from any planer. It's just the way it is. Always start with a board thats a few inches longer than finish length and plan on cutting off the ends. These little planers are better than most, but you can never plan on not haveing some snipe. |
Question: | My first project with this will be planing 8"-10" wide Jatoba planks. How many linear feet can I expect to get out of one set of knives |
Answer: | i really can not tell you , i still running my first set of knives and i have ran many hundred of feet thru , and they still run great we run oak, pine ,maple ,ash, walnut, beech , lot of oak &ash |
Question: | are you happy with this purchase? or do you wish you got the 13" model with 2 speeds for $150 more |
Answer: | I'm a hobbyist and have had the DW734 for about a year now. Most of my planning had been hardwoods, Maple, Cherry, Walnut and some Purple Heart. None of them have had complicated figure. The widest board I've run through the machine was about a 9" glue up. I've gotten very good results and virtually no tear out. For my purposes an extra 1/2" in width and 2 speeds wouldn't make any difference in my projects. For me, this was a great buy. Depending on your needs, your results may var :) |

Question: | Where is manufactured |
Answer: | you just press in the middle and push one end and it pretty much just folds itself.. |
Question: | How many speeds, one or two |
Answer: | 74" long (6ft, 2inches) by 28" wide are dimensions given in a photo in the "Product Image Gallery". Height off the ground shown as 14.5" at the foot & 18.5" at the head, due to the slight fixed incline. It's hard to see how much of the length is the inclined head area. Hope that is helpful. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I change the blades and now it is hard to push through |
Answer: | If you take a thick pass, it will. I usually make sure I have enough wood left to take some shallow passes to get rid of the snipe. |
Question: | I reversed the blades and now the rollers will not pull it through...any comments |
Answer: | First I like the way this Mikita planner works for me it is simple does what it is supposed to do. A friend has Dewalt it is OK for him because he just turns bowls. When I was looking for a planner I did not see Steel City Tool Works 40200H 13. From an engineering stand point I think the helical cutting head has advantages.Good luck! |
Question: | Tech details indicate pack quantity is 1. the 734 is a 3 blade planer. do i have to buy 3 packages at $45.94 each? or are there 3 knives in the pack |
Answer: | According to the Makita manual the shortest piece to run thru the planer is 5 1/16. |
Question: | Will these blades work on the 735 model |
Answer: | Hello, glad to help! Our camping cot is easy to fold and unfold. To fold it up, just press down and push the two ends of this cot toward each other. |

Question: | Is this one cuts from both side?does the board will pass through/slides smoothly |
Answer: | 3 blade |
Question: | Can the cutting head be replaced with a helical cutting head at a later time |
Answer: | 3/16"....but make sure you adjust that nut....i originally thought that the thinnest thickness was 1/2" until i understood the directions...BTW...this machine is an animal....but when planing dense woods like rosewood take SMALL bites do not try to take 1/8" at a time!!!You might know this but i tried to plane a piece of " end grain" and nearly ruined the machineBTW....i almost ruined it by being cheap and 'reclaiming' some redwood that had a nail in it that i failed to find....but you probably know that |
