11 best jointer planers
A jointer planer, often simply referred to as a jointer or a planer, is a power tool commonly used in woodworking and carpentry. It serves two primary functions: flattening and smoothing wood surfaces. Here's what you need to know about jointer planers:
Flattening Surfaces: One of the key functions of a jointer planer is to flatten the faces of wooden boards or planks. This is essential for creating flat, uniform surfaces on the wood, which is crucial for producing high-quality woodworking projects.
Smoothing Edges: In addition to flattening surfaces, jointer planers can also be used to smooth and straighten the edges of boards. This is important for creating tight-fitting joints, such as when joining pieces together to create tabletops or cabinets.
How It Works: A jointer planer typically consists of a flat, adjustable table and a rotating cutter head with sharp knives or blades. The wood is passed over the table, and the cutter head shaves off thin layers of wood, effectively flattening and smoothing the surface.
Adjustability: Most jointer planers allow for precise adjustments of the depth of cut, allowing woodworkers to remove just the right amount of material to achieve the desired result. The infeed and outfeed tables are also adjustable to control the length of wood being processed.
Safety: Safety precautions are essential when using a jointer planer. Users should wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses and hearing protection, and keep their hands away from the cutter head. Push blocks or push pads are often used to guide the wood through the machine safely.
Differences Between Jointers and Planers: While jointer planers can flatten and smooth wood, they are not the same as thickness planers. Jointers primarily focus on one face and one edge of the wood, while thickness planers are used to achieve consistent thickness across the entire piece of wood.
Common Uses: Woodworkers use jointer planers to prepare wood for various projects, such as creating flat, uniform boards for furniture making, cabinet building, and other woodworking tasks. They are particularly valuable when working with rough-sawn lumber, as they can quickly transform uneven surfaces into smooth, precise ones.
Types: Jointer planers come in various sizes, from small benchtop models suitable for hobbyists and small workshops to larger, industrial-grade machines for professional use. The choice of size depends on the scale of the woodworking projects you undertake.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as blade sharpening and keeping the machine clean, is crucial for maintaining the accuracy and effectiveness of a jointer planer.
In summary, jointer planers are versatile power tools used in woodworking to flatten and smooth wood surfaces. They are valuable for creating precise and flat boards necessary for various woodworking projects. Proper safety measures and maintenance are essential when using these machines.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this jointer be attached to a 2 1/2 vac |
Answer: | yes with a reducing adapter on your 2 1/2 vac |
Question: | What is the recommended maximum board length that should be used with this jointer |
Answer: | Maximum board length will depend on the strength of the operator and if/how well the jointer is anchored. I would think 8’ would be doable by most. Comes down to how well you can hold the workpiece down flat on roughly 16” of table before the blade. |
Question: | What is the difference betwee the pc160jt and the pc160jtr |
Answer: | Hello Kimberly, there is no difference. The actual model number is PC160JT. The JTR is a typo on Amazon. Porter Cable does not make a PC160JTR. Best Wishes!Tomboysupply.com |
Question: | What material are the fence and table made out of |
Answer: | I am 99% certan that the tables are cast aluminum, and the fence is aluminum. The weight, color and feel make this pretty evident. If it were cast iron it would weigh twice as much and be prone to rust. This jointer is as good functionally as any other. But because of its light weight it must be secured to a stable heavy base. It also needs a bit more tuning than other models. But if you are going to own any precision tools that is something you should become capable of. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the amperage of the motor |
Answer: | It is a 10 amp |
Question: | what is table made of |
Answer: | I'm still waiting for it arrive. Give me a couple days and I'll be glade to let you know all about it! |
Question: | Yo vivo en Holanda donde la energia es a 220 y no a 110, porque ofrecen este producto para esta zona si no tienen |
Answer: | This planer must be connected to a 110/120 source. To run it on 220 you have to have a voltage converter to convert electrical to 110/120. |
Question: | If I had to choose between a jointer and a planer which should I choose |
Answer: | The two tools kind of go together; you flatten one side of a board on a jointer, then get it so that it is all the same thickness with a planer. That said, you can use a planer to make a board flatter, but it won't be perfect. Start by running the board through on it's most stable side, making sure to go with the grain and just take a minimal amount off of that side, say a 1/16th or less so that you just get the high points. Flip the board and do the same thing on the other side, again a minimal amount, until you've got both sides fully planed. If your board is bowed, take most of your cuts on the high side, and it will lessen the tension that's causing the bow; again, it won't be perfect, but it should be better. |
Question: | Is this chain or belt driven |
Answer: | it is belt driven |
Question: | What width of board will this plane |
Answer: | There is actually 13" between the guides, but I don't think I'd try putting anything bigger than 12 1/2" through it. The board could pinch if it gets cocked in there. Remember that you need to take into account the width of the board you want to plane (whether wide or narrow) and also the density of the wood as you lower the cutter heads after each pass. If I'm planing something such as Douglas fir, I turn the crank down 1/2 a turn. If I'm doing something like maple, I'll only turn the crank down a 1/4 or even a1/6 of a turn, especially if it's a wide board, too. When you put your board through for the first pass, if you have a 3/4" board for instance, you may want to set the depth gauge a little bit higher...it won't hurt anything if it's too high, but if there's any sort of crown or twist to your board, it will keep the machine from bogging down. Same goes when you're lowering the depth gauge, if you're not sure, err on the side of caution. The material that your planer spits out should be paper thin, about a 1/4" wide, and 2 or more inches long. If it's just a bunch of little chips, say 1/4" x 1/2", you're probably planing against the grain. Flip the board over the narrow way, and send it through again. Once you've been doing it for a while, you'll be able to tell from the sound of the machine if you're going against the grain or trying to take too much off at once. Oh, one other thing, I have found that it you can't find 13" replacement blades, 12-1/2" ones will work, you just have to be careful to keep your board 1/4" to 1/2" away from the edge guide. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried planning off paint on cedar with this machine? I have hundreds of feet to recycle |
Answer: | yes. I've removed paint and finish with this.. not on cedar, but on mahogany and oak. However, do keep in mind that this will greatly impact the working life of the blades. But that's a small price to pay for such convenience. I say go for it. You'll love the result and it sure beats sanding or scraping with a card scraper. |
Question: | Can the in-feed and out-feed rollers or carriage lock be adjusted to reduce snipe |
Answer: | Make the last or final pass a very minimul cut depth ie. 1/64. This helps with snipe. The bigger the cut, the more snipe you will get. Make sure the material is support flat against the table as it begins the cut, and on the exit table as well. The pressure rollers tend to make the board 'tip' as it enters and exits (this is typical in any planer, even the big industrial ones found in mill houses). As far as waxing the tables, i much prefer to use a table top silicon type lube usually sold in spray cans at your local wood supply. These leave a non build moisture resistant film that will not only make the table very slick, but leave no waxy residue that can transfer to your lumber and cause finishing issues. Wax that transfers to your lumber can act as a release agent when applying typical lacquer base or poly type finishes. Last but not least, some snipe is considered acceptable from any planer. It's just the way it is. Always start with a board thats a few inches longer than finish length and plan on cutting off the ends. These little planers are better than most, but you can never plan on not haveing some snipe. |
Question: | My first project with this will be planing 8"-10" wide Jatoba planks. How many linear feet can I expect to get out of one set of knives |
Answer: | i really can not tell you , i still running my first set of knives and i have ran many hundred of feet thru , and they still run great we run oak, pine ,maple ,ash, walnut, beech , lot of oak &ash |
Question: | are you happy with this purchase? or do you wish you got the 13" model with 2 speeds for $150 more |
Answer: | I'm a hobbyist and have had the DW734 for about a year now. Most of my planning had been hardwoods, Maple, Cherry, Walnut and some Purple Heart. None of them have had complicated figure. The widest board I've run through the machine was about a 9" glue up. I've gotten very good results and virtually no tear out. For my purposes an extra 1/2" in width and 2 speeds wouldn't make any difference in my projects. For me, this was a great buy. Depending on your needs, your results may var :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | I realize the table is only 30” long but after developing some experience using this jointer, how long could a board be that you flatten |
Answer: | Hope this helps... A jointer or in some configurations, a jointer-planer is a woodworking machine used to produce a flat surface along a board's length. As a jointer, the machine operates on the narrow edge of boards, preparing them for use as butt joints or gluing into panels. A planer-jointer setup has the width that enables smoothing ' and leveling the faces of boards small enough to fit the tables. |

Answer: | The scale is on the top right corner |
Question: | What is the base made of |
Answer: | Yes, this has a 7/16" x 20 internally threaded drawbar end for Bridgeport type milling machines. |
Question: | Is this jt630h have a case iron base |
Answer: | The head on this fly cutter is 2 1/2 inches. There is not a factory spec on this holder. I would expect it to be around 2 3/4 inches. |
