11 best jet planers
A jet planer, often referred to as a jointer, is a power tool commonly used in woodworking for straightening and flattening the edges of boards and creating flat surfaces on pieces of lumber. Here are some key points about jet planers:
Purpose: The primary function of a jet planer (jointer) is to make one face of a board flat and at a 90-degree angle to one adjacent edge. It also smooths out any roughness or irregularities on the surface.
Construction: Jet planers typically consist of a flat, horizontal bed or table and a rotating cutting head with sharp blades or cutters. The workpiece is passed over the table and through the cutter, which shaves off material from the wood to create a flat and smooth surface.
Jointing: The process of using a jet planer is called jointing. It's an essential step in woodworking because it creates a reference surface that can be used to guide subsequent milling operations, such as using a thickness planer or a table saw.
Types: Jet planers come in various sizes and configurations. Some are compact benchtop models suitable for small workshops, while others are larger, floor-standing machines capable of handling more extensive and heavier workpieces.
Adjustability: Jet planers usually have adjustable tables and fence systems that allow woodworkers to set the desired angle and depth of cut. This flexibility enables precise control over the resulting surface.
Safety: As with all power tools, safety is crucial when using a jet planer. Woodworkers should wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses and hearing protection, and follow proper procedures to avoid accidents.
Dust Collection: Jet planers generate a significant amount of sawdust and wood chips during operation. Many models come equipped with dust collection ports or systems to help keep the workspace clean and reduce airborne dust.
Applications: Jet planers are commonly used in woodworking projects like furniture making, cabinetry, and general carpentry. They are particularly valuable for ensuring that boards join seamlessly and have flat, even surfaces.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of a jet planer includes keeping the blades sharp, ensuring proper alignment of the tables and fence, and lubricating moving parts to keep the machine in good working condition.
Brand: "Jet" is also a well-known brand that produces a range of woodworking machinery, including jointers. Jet planers are recognized for their quality and durability.
In summary, a jet planer, or jointer, is a crucial tool in woodworking for creating flat and straight surfaces on boards, ensuring precise joinery, and improving the overall quality of woodworking projects. It is widely used by both hobbyist woodworkers and professionals in the industry.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of the cabinet of this planer? (size needed for mobile base |
Answer: | 18" x 22" (within an inch each way) |
Question: | About how long is the 220v cord for this machine? Thank you in advance |
Answer: | As with most power equipment the cord is too short unless your shop is wired for a stationary machine. If you are planning on moving the planer a longer cord is needed. Here is where the potential problem comes into play, VOLTAGE DROP. Every connection or plug gives the possibility of a voltage drop. This is caused by oxidation on the prongs of the plugs. I would recommend buying a new power cord long enough to accommodate any moving of the planer in your shop. Eliminate any potential problem by using 10 gauge stranded power cord from any big box store (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) Also buy wire lugs or terminals for 10 gauge wire and the proper plug for your 220/240 volt outlets. |
Question: | Does this planer have the Shelix cutter head or is it some other brand? Are the individual blades angled to slice the wood |
Answer: | There are many small cutters in a spiral configuration. They are about 3/8 inch square and can be turned 4 times if damaged by an object hidden in the wood...you should never have to buy blade. They give you small bag of replacement cutters that can be replaced in minutes. |
Question: | Does the jet jwp-15bhh come with built-in casters? i saw an on-line review elsewhere that implied it did |
Answer: | I ordered the base as an extra purchase. It was I purchased a base as an extra item, it was $100 bucks. It came unassembled, but it was easy to put it together, also it is fully adjustable to fit any number of base sizes. By the way, the Jet 15bhh with the helical cutter head is an excellent tool....it planes much better than my old Delta with a three blade cutter head. It is quieter and faster with a fine chip, easier to clean up. |

JET JWP-208-1 20" Planer (708528)
Power and production are what you get with this beauty of a planer from Jet. The 3 horsepower, single-phase, 230-volt motor gives you 5,000 rpm for a total of 20,000 cuts per minute via the four-knife cutterhead, turning raw lumber into smooth, ready-to-work boards in minutes.
Professionals will love this planers fantastic capacity, with a full 20 inches of width and 6 inches under the cutterhead and a full-width max depth of cut of 3/32-inch.
The gear box has two feed speeds, easily set by pulling out or pushing in a lever while the planer is running. There are three rugged steel infeed rollers that grab hold of the stock for you, paired with three rubber outfeed rollers that wont mar your piece. Anti-kickback fingers operate by gravity, keeping stock from being thrown back at you.
A large handwheel makes depth changes an easy task, turning smoothly and moving the table surface is .059" with each complete revolution. Yes, the table surface. Instead of the cutterhead coming down to the work, the work moves up to the stationary cutterhead. It seemed a bit unconventional, but the end result is flawless, so we have no beef with it, except for the fact that it makes difficult the job of building auxiliary feed tables. The depth scale is clear and legible, marked in increments of 1/16-inch. We like the sturdy return rollers mounted on top, giving you a great place to rest the stock and giving your arms and back a break on the trip back to the infeed side.
This is a beautifully made machine, with the fit and finish youd expect in this price category, form the one-piece welded base to the serrated infeed rollers and the glass-like table surface. To keep the tables pristine, youll want to apply talcum power with a blackboard eraser once a week use plenty of elbow grease. The table will stay slick and protected, and your workpieces wont pick up any discoloration from the powder.
This is a dream planer for the home woodworker, and it will be the staple in any professionals workshop. Well done, Jet.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

A sturdy cast-iron table and base provide strength and reduce vibration during use, and built-in lockable casters add support and stability while allowing easy maneuverability.
Designed and built with the home woodworking shop in mind (view larger).
Power Base for Home Woodworking
Designed and built with the home woodworking shop in mind, the Jet 708524 JPM-13CS has a totally enclosed 1-1/2-horsepower, 115-volt motor that can easily be rewired to 230 volts. The motor delivers its power to the cutterhead assembly through a pair of V-belts running in precision-machined multi-groove pulleys. A removable side door on the cabinet provides access to the motor and its belt-tensioning mount should adjustment become necessary in the future.
Superior Cutting and Feeding
The JPM-13CS features an all-steel, precision-machined cutterhead (2-9/16-inch diameter) fitted with three full-width knives. The knives are retained by three-piece wedge-shaped gibs that allow for the installation of many molding-knife profiles without removing the planer blades. The center gib section makes installing most molding knives easy (2 inches wide and under).
The planer/molder has two feed rates, with the high 20 FPM (feet per minute) setting used primarily for dimensioning wood when lots of material is being removed quickly. The 10 FPM speed is used for finish cuts when the smoothest possible surface is desired, and this slower feed rate is also used for molding operations.
Rubber-covered infeed and outfeed rollers keep the stock moving at a consistent pace, and the rubber feed roller surface gets a good grip on the wood without marring the profiled surface of molded wood. Both of the feed rollers are easily adjustable to maintain their performance.
Generously Sized, High-Quality Table
The cast-iron table lends plenty of heft and contact surface, measuring 19-1/4 inches long by 14 inches wide. The table has 6 inches of travel maintained by lead screws on either side and is driven by an easy-to-use hand crank on top of the machine. Handy metric and inch scales flank the infeed housing opening to make adjusting cut depth simple and accurate. It comes with an incorporated dust chute--so it's simple to hook up to a dust collector and keep the shop clean. Four lockable casters (not standard) make it easy to maneuver the tool in a tight shop. It's backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this jointer / planer belt driven |
Answer: | Well, your thoughts on who this is designed for seems a bit sarcastic. I ordered this by looking at my height and weight. I am 5'11" and weigh 172 pounds. If you look at the chart, that is a US Medium. It fits surprisingly well. You do not say anything about your weight and height. Therefore, I leave it up to you to decide based on how tall you are and your weight. I have at least SIX of these in this size and I see no variation in quality and fit. |
Question: | I have a 20 amp, 120 volt outlets in my garage. I can buy a voltage converter to get 240 volts. Will the machine draw more than 10 amps at 240 volts |
Answer: | Yes we have black. Should be back in stock soon. Email Josh @ KafGrooming .com to be added to waitlist. |
Question: | Can this run off of a standard grounded 110v outlet? The specs here indicate that it can, but reviews and the manual from JET's website mention 220v |
Answer: | It will turn your skin black if you use a lot and get it directly on the skin. With a crew cut it would be hard to not get it directly on this skin. |
Question: | Can you upgrade to the segmented cutterhead in the future? If so, where can one be found |
Answer: | The product comes out as a cream base. If you have tried out American Select Styling cream it is very similar to this consistency |

JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer
A frustrating choice woodworkers often face is whether to get a jointer or a planer first. That choice is made more difficult because these machines compliment each other to dimension, square and smooth the wood. The new JET JJP- 12 Jointer-Planer eliminates that problem and brings both capabilities to your shop in one accurate, durable and economical package.
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is based on a heavy-duty, fully welded steel base cabinet that houses the motor along with the planer table mechanism. The cabinet also provides solid mounting for the associated controls as well as supporting the jointer table and fence assemblies.
Features:
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer features a 3HP, 230V, 12.5A, 1Ph TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor that supplies consistent power to the cutterhead that issused for both jointing and planing operations as well as the feed roller system in the planer mode. The belts and feed roller drive chain systems are contained within the cabinet but readily accessible through the large removable panel on the cabinet rear.
To protect the motor – and you – we include a magnetic On/Off switch with a built-in limiter. This switch prevents excessive variances in the electrical power from damaging the motor.
Another benefit of a magnetic switch is that should the power go out and then come back on the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer will not restart on its own. The On button must be pushed after power is restored to start the machine. The limit switch also prevents machine startup while changing modes of operation.
Capacities
To make the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer as capable as it is versatile, the jointing and planing width capacity is a full 12”. That capacity allows you to work with wider boards without having to rip them down to fit common jointer widths in the 6 to 8” range. Because both the jointer and planer width capacities are the same, you can move between those modes without having to add an additional ripping step to the process.
3-Knife Cutterhead
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer uses a large 2 ¾”-diameter cutterhead fitted with three high quality knives for both jointing and planing operations. The cutterhead turns at 5500 RPM for all operations. The knives are retained with conventional wedge bars and have jacking screws that make setting their height precisely much easier. Because this cutterhead is used for both jointing and planing, setting the knives one time is all that is required.
Changing Modes
From the beginning, along with accuracy, capacity and durability, developing a fast, easy way to change between jointing and planing modes was high on the design criteria list. The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer sports a very simple, tool-free hinge based system that allows changing between jointing and planing modes very quickly without having to remove any components.
A pair of locking levers on the cabinet sides release the jointing bed which is then rotated up to expose the planer section. Lifting the cast iron jointer bed assembly (moves as one piece) is made easier because of spring-assisted hinges that reduce that effort substantially. A drop in lock at the hinge point secures the jointer bed in the upright position.
The dust collection shroud with its 4”-diameter outlet port is also hinged for use in both the jointing and planing modes. The shroud has an internal, gravity-operated baffle plate that helps direct the collection vacuum for maximum effectiveness. When the jointer bed is up, the dust shroud is rotated up into a very traditional location for planer dust evacuation. The planer section is now ready for use.
To go back to the jointer mode, rotate the dust shroud down, release the jointer table lock, lower the table into position and then engage the two locking levers. The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is ready for jointing operations in seconds.
Jointer Mode
Because both the machine modes use the same 12” cutterhead, the jointer section is capable of face jointing 12”-wide stock. The 55”-long by 12”-wide cast iron infeed and outfeed tables provide plenty of support for the big project pieces.
The infeed and outfeed cast iron tables are individually adjustable for height for the most flexibility. The maximum cut depth is 1/8”. To insure long-term accuracy, we even included full coplanar adjustment capability and complete instructions in the manual for making this adjustment should it become necessary. The 43”-long by 6”-tall extruded aluminum smooth faced fence makes accurate jointing easy.
The fence is fully adjustable for material width using a pair of wide spread levers for maximum stability. The fence face can be set to any angle from 0 to 45-degrees for precise bevel cuts. A handy bevel scale and pointer are included on the fence mount.
Planer Mode
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is a fully capable thickness planer with a 12”-cut width and handles a whopping 8 ¾” maximum material thickness. The maximum full-width cut depth is 1/8” with 5/32” being the maximum cut on narrower stock. Naturally, lighter cuts put less stress on the wood itself and often produce much better results. The 5500 RPM cutterhead speed means a constant 20 FPM feed rate is a good balance between quick material removal and a clean, smooth surface.
In planer mode the material feed roller system is engaged by moving an exterior handle to the On position. That produces a material feed rate of 20 FPM. (feet per minute) The control lever is moved to the Off position when the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is changed to the jointing mode.
The cutterhead assembly is fixed and includes a row of gravity-operated anti-kickback fingers for safety. A serrated metal feed roller is designed to resist contamination and maintain a consistent material feed rate for the best results. A rubber-covered outfeed roller keeps the stock moving without marring the freshly planed surface. The 21 ¼” by 12” planer table adjusts up and down through a large handwheel (with spinner handle) on the infeed end of the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer while in planer mode.
A scale on the handwheel hub shows the amount of change partial turns create while a full height scale with pointer shows overall cutter to table distance. The planer table is locked with a lever-type handle.
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer was designed to bring the much needed jointing and planing capabilities to your shop in a single, space-saving 55”-long by 39 ½”-tall (top of fence) and 32”-deep (fence at its widest setting) package. Because of its space saving design and our focus on accuracy, function and durability, the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is as economical as it is versatile.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this machine the same as the 735 w/o the extra blades and infeed and outfeed tables |
Answer: | Yes it is the same as the standard 735. As to the ware on the blades - I've planed over 300bf in the 6 years that I've had this unit. I missed a label staple on the end of a board and now have a 1/32nd hairline strip that shows and I easily clean up with a scraper. I also purchased an extra set of HSS (high speed steel) knives and put the money out ($158 for the set) for carbide edged which I only use on the last phase of the construction. I've got an older 13" planer that I use strictly for rough plane jobs and paint and varnish removal when I recycle older woodwork. |
Question: | How much thickness does this take, when used just for finishing? i have ok smooth oak in 13/16", would like it ++smooth but can't give more than |
Answer: | You can take as little or as much off as you want. It is measurable down to about 1/64" but if there is any cupping or warping within the board that may vary a bit. I would recommend a random orbital sander going up to 320 grit to get a ++smooth surface |
Question: | How easy is it to change blades on this planer? Thanks |
Answer: | Easy, about 10-15 minutes: 1) Remove four 5/32nds" headed screws to remove the top yellow cowling. 2) Remove 3 red thumbscrews to remove the black dust shroud - clean out any blocked wood chips. 3) Remove eight 5/32nds" headed screws on each of the three blades. 4) Flip the blades, or sharpen if they've already been flipped. 5) Reassemble in the reverse order. If using a power drill with a 5/32nd inch allen wrench head (e.g., https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VH7ZQGC or something similar), set the drill on medium torque and it will take about 10 minutes. (If you manually unscrew the screws using the T handled allen wrench it will take twice as long.) If careful (having heard of the others stories), it doesn't seem hard to to remove/replace the screws with enough torque to seat them properly, but not so hard that they get struck. I'm planing very hard madrone wood, and the blades have lasted about 150-200 lineal feet of wood that is about a foot wide before needing replacing. Use the #1 (slow) feed speed for hard woods - I didn't know about this until reading the manual... |
Question: | Does this planer have a 2.5" or 4" dust ejector port? Thanks |
Answer: | It has a 2.5" port with a 4" adapter. Follow the useful advice from the other folks, use the 4" adapter with a 4" hose/duct. Cheers 🥃 |

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the dimensions of this item |
Answer: | No. This is a disappointment after using their old version! It lacks the belt clip, magnetic bit holders, and battery level indicator. What gives? Get the Porter-Cable 20V MAX Hammer Drill (PCC620B) instead. |
Question: | can these quick change knifes be sharpened |
Answer: | Comes both ways: tool only or with 2 batteries and a charger. Watch for specials at Lowes. I got 2 batteries, charger and choice of a tool for $99. You're gonna love this drill:) |
