7 best impact nail guns
An impact nail gun, also known as an air nailer or pneumatic nail gun, is a powerful and versatile power tool commonly used in construction, woodworking, and other tasks that require fastening nails into various materials. Here is what you need to know about impact nail guns:
Power Source: Impact nail guns are typically powered by compressed air supplied by a portable air compressor. This compressed air drives the nails into the material with great force and speed. Some models also use gas cartridges for added portability.
Types of Nails: Impact nail guns are designed for specific nail types and sizes, such as brad nails, finish nails, framing nails, or roofing nails. It's important to select the appropriate nail gun for your specific project to ensure proper nail compatibility.
Applications: Impact nail guns are used in a wide range of applications, including framing, roofing, sheathing, siding, finishing, and more. They are popular among carpenters, builders, and DIY enthusiasts for their efficiency and precision in fastening nails.
Operating Modes: These nail guns offer different operating modes, such as single-shot and sequential firing. In single-shot mode, you must press the nailer against the material and trigger each nail individually.Sequential firing mode allows you to hold down the trigger and rapidly fire nails when the nosepiece is pressed against the workpiece.
Depth Adjustment: Many impact nail guns feature depth adjustment settings, allowing you to control how deeply the nails are driven into the material. This is important for achieving the desired level of penetration without damaging the surface.
Magazine Capacity: The magazine of an impact nail gun holds a supply of nails. Various models have different magazine capacities, ranging from small for precision work to large for high-capacity tasks.
Safety Features: Safety is a paramount concern when using impact nail guns. They often include safety mechanisms to prevent accidental firing, such as a tip contact safety that requires the tool's nosepiece to be pressed against the work surface before firing.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep an impact nail gun in good working condition. This may include lubricating moving parts, cleaning debris from the magazine, and inspecting the tool for wear and tear.
Portable Air Compressor: To power an impact nail gun, you'll need a portable air compressor or air compressor inflator. These devices provide a steady source of compressed air at the necessary pressure for the nail gun to function properly. Ensure that your compressor's specifications match the requirements of your nail gun.
In summary, an impact nail gun is a highly efficient and versatile tool for fastening nails into various materials. It is commonly used in construction and woodworking projects due to its speed, precision, and ease of use. When used safely and with the appropriate nail types, an impact nail gun can significantly streamline the nailing process in both professional and DIY settings.

The Bostitch story
Originally known as the Boston Wire Stitcher® Company, the first syllables of the words "Boston" and "Stitcher" were joined to make "Bostitch®", and the name was adopted for product use after the manufacture of machines began. Thomas Briggs, the founder, invented in 1896 a new kind of user friendly Wire Stitcher designed for fastening books, calendars, checks, hat boxes, etc. This machine made a staple or stitch as it was called from a coil of wire. It was called the Boston Wire Stitcher and the company was named the Boston Wire Stitcher Company. In 1903 the company invented a foot operated stapling machine that used pre-formed staples. These staples were not collated but had to be slid off of a track into the magazine of the machine. Later they were collated with paper and then glue. Soon the Boston Wire Stitcher Company was developing various kinds of staplers for industrial markets. In 1930 the Bostitch® Sales Company was formed to sell Bostitch® products, and in 1948 the Boston Wire Stitcher Company officially became Bostitch®, Inc. The first Coil Nailer from Bostitch, the N2, came on the scene in 1965, and the rest is history. Today, Bostitch sells a huge range of nailers, compressors, and other products, and is a leader in the industry.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has Bostitch improved their instruction manual |
Answer: | Their manual is still the WORST! It's worth knocking 1-2 stars off just because of this. On top of that, the Bostitch website was just as bad! I'm left with going to YouTube to try and figure this out. |
Question: | Seller: "Power Source corded-electric |
Answer: | There is an error in the "Technical Details" portion of the Product Information for this item in the Amazon web page. It lists the Power Source as "corded-electric". That is wrong. It is pneumatically powered; i.e. it needs to be connected to a compressed air source. This is a great product. I've used mine in construction framing into tight spaces and have driven 3-4 inch nails into Douglas Fir with no problem. |
Question: | What is the smallest size nail that can be driven with this tool |
Answer: | With care and patients you can use very small nails provided you use the smaller diameter tip and don't mind clearing a jam or two. |
Question: | aside from the accessories, how is the actual nailer different than the PN50 ? Heard the PN50 is half the size of this one |
Answer: | The PN50 is very compact, but it's power corresponds to it's size. If you have to drive a few 10d tico nails, the PN50 is useful for tight spaces. However, if you're trying to nail 16d nails for seismic straps, the PN50 will take alllll day to drive those nails. Each tool has a specific use and is best in certain circumstances. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What CFM and pressure are required |
Answer: | You don't use an air pump--you use an air compressor. Set the pressure for 110 pounds. |
Question: | What is the operating pressure requirement for this palm nailer |
Answer: | It's like a hammer, not a nail gun. It drives nails that are already partly nailed in. |
Question: | how do you set this up with an air pump |
Answer: | It’s advertised as compatible with Ridgid heads. I got a Ridgid brand spade head and works fine. So it will probably work if you get a Ridgid brand spiral cutter or any other Ridgid head |
Question: | where do i get the nails |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this nailer have to be oiled |
Answer: | I oil mine after use it can't hurt it i think |
Question: | What is the largest size(penny) nail thiis can handle |
Answer: | I found the nailer will handle most of the Grip-Rite nails available at Home Deport. I've used joist hanger galvanized (1 and 1/2") with no problem and gone up to 10d with no problems at all. It's more about the size of the nail head is where you could run into problems. |
Question: | Does this nailer come with a storage box and/or spare heads, etc |
Answer: | Just the nailer |
Question: | Can I use for 1-1/2 nails |
Answer: | Yes you can. Just need to watch the head size of the nail.I used it to drive 3 1/2" frame nails into joist hangars in a tight spot and some of the heads were to big to fit into the nail port but was still able to drive them.short nails you probably can't hang onto if they don't fit down into the port. Roofing nails the head will be to big to fit, but regular frame nails should gocommons work better as they are heaver guage. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long for pressure to build up on initial start up? Thanks |
Answer: | If it's not holding pressure check all connections you may have a loose one. |
Question: | If i buy this for my husband, do i need to buy an air hose, and if so, what do i buy? this is all stuff i know nothing about. thank you |
Answer: | Air hose and some attachments come with. In the future you may want to get a kit with air gun, tire inflater and changeable fittings. |
Question: | Can this be used for roofing |
Answer: | It works perfectly to run one roofing gun. I’ve bought two of them and they both could handle the work load perfectly. And to comment on one of these guys replies to your question, He said the compressor would run continuously and burn up” well that’s not only untrue but impossible. You would have to be able to lay 5 square an hour all day long not just an hour or two for it to even be remotely possible to burn up that compressor. Not saying you couldn’t lay 5 square an hour but you can’t do it for several hours straight that’s for sure. I personally have put on 11 bundles per hour for the first 2 hours and the compressor did not run continuously and even if it did it wouldn’t have burnt up. Those specific compressors are designed to click off and on as many times as you can make them do so. |
Question: | Can a framing nailer be used on this compressor or just finishing |
Answer: | Yes, I run my Hitachi framing nailer off this. Maybe 30-40 .141 x3" nails into dimensional lumber before the compressor kicks on. Could I use a more powerful compressor for framing? Sure. But the weight and cost of this thing are very nice. Would be underpowered for roofing or sheathing applications, though. |
