14 best highland lathes

Highland Lathes:

To the best of my knowledge, as of my last training data, there isn't a specific brand or product known as "Highland Lathes." However, we can provide general information about lathes and their accessories which could be pertinent to various brands and types.

Lathes:

A lathe is a machine tool that rotates a workpiece about an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation, facing, turning, with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry about that axis.

Lathe Parts & Accessories:

  1. Chucks: These are used to hold the workpiece securely. Different chucks, like the three-jaw (self-centering) or four-jaw (independent), can be chosen based on the specific requirement.

  2. Tool Rest: Provides a stable surface against which tools can be leaned and manipulated when shaping the workpiece.

  3. Faceplates: These are flat surfaces that are used to hold the workpiece, especially if it can't be held using a chuck.

  4. Carriage: This is the component that moves along the bed of the lathe and carries the cutting tool, allowing for longitudinal and cross movement.

  5. Tailstock: Positioned on the opposite end from the headstock, it provides support for the other end of the workpiece, especially during drilling operations.

  6. Steady Rest & Follow Rest: Both are used to support longer workpieces. While the steady rest is fixed in position, the follow rest moves with the carriage.

  7. Turret: Used primarily on turret lathes, it holds multiple cutting tools, enabling the operator to perform various operations without changing tools manually.

Power Tool Parts & Accessories:

Lathes, like other power tools, have various components and accessories designed to enhance their functionality, ease of use, and safety. These might include:

  1. Safety Shields: Protect the user from flying debris and sparks.

  2. Drive Belts: Used in many lathes to transfer power from the motor to the spindle.

  3. Digital Readouts: Help in providing precise measurements.

  4. Coolant Systems: Useful in metalworking lathes, these systems provide a steady stream of coolant to reduce heat and improve the finish.

  5. Tool Holders & Inserts: Designed to hold cutting tools firmly during operations.

  6. Lighting: Adjustable lights can be attached to offer better visibility.

When selecting lathe accessories or parts, it's crucial to consider the specific requirements of your projects and the compatibility of the accessories with your lathe model. Always prioritize safety, ensuring that all components and accessories are installed correctly and that you're familiar with their operation.

User questions & answers

Question: How do I know what size to buy for an older wood Lathe
Answer: I fits on my shopsmith. Shopsmith has a #2 morse taper.
Question: Will this fit on a shopsmith
Answer: The one I have is also not suitable for turning metal. As Randa stated. It is dead soft metal. The first time I installed it with a piece of stainless steel in the lathe, it deformed like it was made of modeling clay. Now my center has big ring-shaped gouges all over the end messing up the precision pretty bad. Don't get this for metal turning.
Question: Can it be used to turn metal? Is it hardened? What is the shank length, and overall length of this live center
Answer: Almost anything can be replaced. I've had this live center for about 3 years without any problems. I don't grease, oil, or clean it. If this live center fails I will probably throw it in my catch all drawer thinking one day I will come up with a plan to fix it. By the time you add up the hours and get an accurate measurement from already worn bearings and place that order I would rather just buy a new one.
Question: Can the bearings be replaced when the time comes
Answer: This is a 10 deg included angle and I believe it is for de burring. I am going to use it as a guide so I can make dowels. The octagon dowel will be fed into a hardwood block with this reamers size for control to form a perfectly shaped dowel. "See Rob Cosman's doweled boxes on U-Tube"

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 3/4' live male threaded end but lost the spur, I need to weld a spur to a bolt so need to know the diameter of the taper below the spur
Answer: just as cheap to buy a new one. weld wont hold if you put any strain on it
Question: I would like to know the dementions of the shaft that goes into the chuck I know its tapered but need to know big and small size thanks Jack
Answer: If you have a Morse taper 2 (available in MT1) it has a taper of .04995 per inch. The approximate sizes of the big end and small ends are: 0.572 and 0.700. Those will vary depending on the depth of the socket (it's not a chuck), the length of the shank, and other variables. The only thing hard and fast about it is the taper.
Question: I'm new to turning and would like to know if the "5/8 inch crown" is refering to the outside machined dimension at the bitting teeth end
Answer: It is to the outside of the device, not from center to the points of the teeth. I don't recommend that you buy this, though. The center point is spring loaded and eventually the set screw on the side will come undone and fling off in a random direction. Then, when you take the piece off the lathe, the center point and spring will fly out the end. If you're lucky, you don't have huge piles of sawdust and you're able to find the pieces and put it back together.
Question: My pin is also stuck. It was not from being dirty because I have never used it. Has anyone came up with a way to get the pin back out
Answer: That's easy to fix. On the side, just below the teeth, you will find a screw. That screw allows you to do three things. First, it allows you to take the pin out if you don't want to use it. Second, it allows you to lock the pin so it does not retract. And last, probably what you are interested in, it allows you to free up the pin so it slides up and down. When the pin is out you will notice a notch on one side. Make sure the screw and notch are lined up or the pin just might shoot out at you the next time you loosen it. Do for now just loosen the screw about a quarter turn and the pin should loosen up. If it doesn't then take the pin out and see if something got into the spring which is behind it. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: will this work on older craftsman 113-228162 # 1 morse taper
Answer: I'm sure that it would work fine for that the only issue is it is a fairly large tool so the smaller the coin the more difficult it will be to hold it in place while you mark it. I use it for marking center on pen blanks that are about 3/4" square and some that are 3/4" in diameter and it works fine.
Question: IS the drive center and tailstock center points available separately
Answer: It may take careful measuring but you should be able to do 1/2 round. I've done 3/4 with no problem.
Question: Is this considered a safety center
Answer: The squiggly line has no purpose other than being the other side of the gap that allows you to fit a pencil or other device in the middle to mark the center line. It is squiggly so you do not mistake it for the actual center line and make the wrong mark.
Question: will this center fit into a regular drill chuck? I have a old drill lathe and need it to fit a half inch drive drill
Answer: It has a set of little fences that form a 90 degree angle on one side and a 60 degree angle on the other. In between the fences a slot bisects the angles. So a line drawn along that slot will pass through the center of the turning square/round/octagon, whichever you have. Rotate the device about 90 degrees and draw a second line. Where the two lines intersect is the center of the turning piece. This gets you close. You can get more accurate by drawing four lines, all at 90 degrees to one another, producing a small square in the center. (This is because the pencil or scribe is probably offset some from the slot's edge.) Put your lathe center's point in the middle of that little square and you'll be very close. This much accuracy is needed if one is leaving part of the turning square. Otherwise the turned part won't align exactly with the section that is left square.

Question: The price seems very low. Are these tools well made? Is the steel very thick or sturdy
Answer: Spur Center
Question: where do I get replacement heads for these tools
Answer: Chuck sizes vary from machine to machine. Check the size of the chuck your tool has. Common sizes are 1/2”, and 1” . I believe this is an1/2”, it fit my Ridged lathe well. Question: What is the diameter of the shaft that inserts into the holder
Answer: It is a number 2 Morse taper.
Question: I have an old shopsmith mark v (circa 1957). can i mount this drive spur into the drill chuck or do i need to get an adapter
Answer: you would need to get an adapter unless you are talking about mounting this in the Morse taper that the drill chuck mounts in.
Question: These mount on the tailstock, correct
Answer: Steve: The two inserts on the left mount in the head stock. The four "knives" dig into the wood and force the wood to turn. They are useful for making a mortise or tenon on the bottom of a rough piece. Once the bottom, has a mortise or tenon; the wood can be reversed and mounted in conventional jaws to complete the turning. The third item has a ball bearing and mounts on the tail stock. It provides additional support for heavier or off balance pieces. I am not sure of the use of the fourth item. Tony

10" Round Center Finder Compass Clear Acrylic for Drawing Circles, Lathe Work and Woodturners. Ideal For Locating Center on Logs and General Stock Pieces Works Well on Round and Square Stock

Based on 687 reviews Check latest price
  • If you have ever tried to use a standard compass to draw a circle on irregularly shaped or rough items then you know your results can be mixed at best. Trying to keep the compass centered while making a clearly marked circle can be tough in this situation. The Round, Clear Acrylic Center Finder/Compass solves this issue by providing a clear view of what you are doing and drawing holes with corresponding, clear index marks for drawing circles.
  • The clear round design of the center finder/compass allows you to see exactly what you are doing and assists you with quick, easy placement. Once you locate the spot that you want to center your circle from, use a push pin or brad nail in the center hole of the center finder/compass to hold it in place. Choose the diameter circle you would like to mark, then using a fine pointed pencil or scoring tool to mark your circle.
  • The black markings are appear clearly on lighter colored surfaces and line up with a different size diameter holes in 1/2” increments. You can layout and draw circles from 1” to 10” in diameter. Making this ideal for wood turners, arts, crafts, school projects, rough and finish carpenters or use it anywhere you need to draw a circle. It makes layout and finding the center on many types of objects easy and truly simplified. Works on wood, poster board, plastic, metal, glass, composites and more!
  • It also doubles as a center finder that works exceptionally well on irregularly shaped items like wooden logs. When laying out a circle on a log one of the toughest things to do is to find the center or cut just the right amount of wood off to create a “perfect circle”. The center finder/compass helps with this by allowing you to lay the disc on to the log and easily identify the largest circle possible on the log. This also helps produce maximum yield on logs smaller than 10” in diameter.
  • Made from clear, fully transparent acrylic, the center finder/compass is perfect for many different shop, job site or around the home applications. Wherever you need a circle drawn or need to find center on irregularly shaped items this center finder/compass is the tool to reach for.

User questions & answers

Question: how thick is this acrylic material
Answer: There is one “ live center with a bearing “ the others are just stationary centers.
Question: is this scratch resistant? Does it have something on the bottom to help protect
Answer: I purchased them and have used then some. They are sturdy, they did not bend or break and the cutters stayed on. They are very small and have a tendency to twist in your hand when they ingage the work. They aren't pretty in my opinion but serviceable. I don't use them very often because I have to hold them very tightly.
Question: Does anyone know of a 12 inch model
Answer: Replacement Carbide Cutters are available from Penn State Industries. The part # is LCHOL3CX.
Question: will this work on logs larger than 10 inches
Answer: This drive center is available in two sizes. I bought the #2MT. If you have a #1 Morse taper then you'll want the 1MT size. Hope this helps.
