User questions & answers

Question: Will 1221 tail stock accept #2 Morse taper drill chuck
Answer: Yes! Just be sure that the tail stock hole and morse taper are clean, otherwise the #2 morse taper can be difficult to remove...
Question: has this lathe have a indexing head
Answer: William, yes this lathe has an indexing head. I have not yet used the feature but it is done with a spring loaded pin which you lock into anyone of 24 positions. The spring loaded pin in screwed in once the pin is set to hold it in place.Rich F
Question: Is this Ron Swanson approved
Answer: Yes, Ron personally blesses each unit as it’s loaded onto a truck.
Question: Do you need to move a belt to change speeds? Or is there a dial or switch
Answer: This lathe has a variable speed controller, so the speeds may be changed using the simple rotating knob. To provide speed ranges to suit any situation, especially for the more experienced turner, there is a three step pulley. This arrangement allows the variable speed controller to adjust speeds from 60 to 900 rpm on the low step of the pulley, 110 -1800 rpm on the 2nd step (medium), and a high speed range of 220 -3600 rpm on the the 3rd step. The belt need only be changed if you want to move to a different range of speeds. This is a very simple process.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you add an extendion table on it to turn long spindel legs
Answer: Yes! You just can't buy it on amazon..rockler and woodcraft sell them for around $150.
Question: Is it a Morse taper
Answer: Yes both the head stock and tail are #2
Question: what is needed with this lathe for pen turning
Answer: Basically, you will need a 7mm MT2 mandrel and your tools. When you order your pen kits, make sure you get the bushings and drill bit. Depending on how you finish the pens, you may need a buffing system. For acrylics, get a set of micro pads, they really bring the shine out. I also use a "french polish" and shellac to put a lasting hard coat on the finished product. Good luck and enjoy the lathe.
Question: what is the thread size on the head stock
Answer: Headstock Spindle Thread is 1" x 8 TPI.Complete data sheet is here:http://content.jettools.com/assets/manuals/719100_man_EN.pdf

Delta Industrial 46-461 Reversible Nova G3-D Woodturning Chuck

Based on 109 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Includes Reversible NOVA G3-D Woodturning Chuck - 46-461.

  • Auto-Stop Jaw Slides inhibit the widening of the chuck jaws beyond their optimum clamping range insuring the material is properly secured
  • Anti-Release Spindle Lock is an exclusive DELTA feature that ensures the chuck will stay securely mounted on the lathe during forward and reverse turning applications
  • Enhanced jaw gearing provides extra smooth jaw movement and increased clamping pressure for maximum material support
  • Threaded chuck jaws increase surface contact with the material offering more secure clamping

User questions & answers

Question: What is the maximum rpm this chuck is rated for
Answer: The max speed you would use has more to do with the diameter and the complexity of the item on a wood lathe. If you are bowl turning I have been told a 6" bowl can be turned safely between 1000-1500 rpm by this rule, a 9" bowl at a maximum of 1000 rpm, a 12" bowl 500-750rpm and so forth. Finials could be turned at 2000 rpm. This chuck can easily handle all of that. Hope this helps.
Question: Will this fit my delta 1642 lathe without adapters
Answer: This chuck is pre-threaded at 1" 8 threads per inch. The 1642 lathe is most likely 1.25" or 1.50" and 8 threads per inch. So, most likely you will need an adapter.
Question: is this self centering? whats the max size stock it can handle
Answer: Yes they are self centering. I believe they can handle stock about 4 1/2 inches. I had bought a different chuck that cost almost as much as this one, but only had one set of jaws. I sent it back, and got this one. It is the best thing that I have bought for turning wooden boxes, and bowls. It seems to be very good quality at a very reasonable price. I got another set of jaws that will hold up to 8" on Amazon for $31.19. The item # is PSI Woodworking CJAWFJ2 Jumbo Flat jaws. I hope this helped.
Question: Every time i clamp a piece of wood into this chuck, it spins free as soon as i apply any pressure with a tool. what am i doing wrong
Answer: What's spinning, the wood or the chick? I'll try and help but without seeing what's going on I'm not sure I can help. Ok so the first thing your doing is rotating it on your lathe, then your tightening the hexnuts that are on the chuck 2 of them. Then your putting your wood into the chuck and tightening it fully with your chuck key. After that you should be able to bring up the tail stock and lock it in place, then turn the handle until the wood is snug in between centers. Best of luck, hope this helps. User questions & answers

Question: I have a chuck that is 1"-8tpi female thread (nova 48111), it doesn't fit on this lathe. what adapter should i buy
Answer: Buy a 3/4" 16 TPI to 1" 8 TPI adapter. If you further questions go to http://www.woodturningz.com/downloads/w1704_ds.pdf for the specs on this machine.
Question: is there an adapter for the face plate for mounting live center chucks? I bought one but won't line up with holes
Answer: I'm not sure if they make the adapter to mount on the face plat. I have a 2" diameter three jaw, self centering scroll type chuck that i bought from Amazon that ihave used that works great, but i think that the holes in the face plate is for mounting a backing block to the piece of wood stock to turn a bowl. It says in the manual that you glue the block to the wood your turning and use the holes to screw the block on to face plate. Hope this helped.
Question: What size wood stock can it hold? How about something like 12'' long by 8" wide piece of wood
Answer: The length it will hold will be dependant upon what chucks you have in the head and tail stock. The bulkier the chucks, the shorter the length it will handle. I'd say it will hold 12" lengths unless your chucks are sizable. I wouldn't try more than 4" width stock unless it was short. Although the lathe may hold the stock, it would be too much for the motor. The intended purpose of this lathe is to make small things like ink pens, Christmas ornaments, small toys like tops or yo-yo's and tool handles etc. If you want to mount 12" X 8" stock you should be looking at full sized lathes.
Question: is there anyway to secure to a bench
Answer: Yes. It has has three holes in the base that you can bolt it down with. I bolted mine down on a metal stand. It holds it down real solid. Mine is the Shop Fox W1704 also. It is well built. I really like mine. Hope this helps!

User questions & answers

Question: Can this chuck be used on the Jet 10141 lathe if not why not
Answer: Your Jet 10141 is a mini lathe no longer a production model. It does have indexing (good); indexing is a sought after feature and frequently used. It does have a 1X8 thread on the head stock; also good. that means it will accept your Nova G3 which is a high-end chuck and will last a life time. When you move to a full size lathe and you will if you hang in there; it will still be a great chuck, it may simply require an adapter for the new head-stock thread, 10 bucks. The G3 is a midi chuck with so much versatility that it should be in and probably is in every woodturners arsenal. You simply cannot go wrong here. It is appropriate for mini to midi to full size. Add to it as you are able; cole jaws, mini jaws, etc. build a steady rest for your mini, it may sound like overkill on a mini but you will want to do hollow forms with this and wine glasses, weed pots and certainly elements. The very best addition to this chuck would be without knowing your skill level or whether your chisels are the new Carbides or traditional or a mix of both would be: Doc Green's "Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning" absolutely indispensable. One copy for the shop with punch wholes in a 3 ring binder, one copy for arm chair reading. Worth the price. The other indispensable would be to join your local woodturning club, worth more than anyone can imagine.Good Luck; enjoy turning, also see Kurt Hertzogs articles on becoming a pen maker instead of a pen turner. Wood Turning Design Magazine. It's a creative world out there so enjoy. Brad~Scott
Question: Is this the chuck only or does it come with a set of jaws like in the pictures? If it comes with a set of jaws what range in inches does it hold
Answer: It does come with jaws as pictured. For full range details, this is your best source: http://teknatool.com/products/Chuck_Accessories/50mm.htm
Question: Does this chuck work on the Jet 1221vs lathe? It does have a 1" by 8tpi but im not sure about the direction because I dont have it yet
Answer: Well, I must have bought the odd ball because it does not fit my Lathe.. THe lathe has an acme thread and the chuck doesn't. I bought the adapter and it still doesn't fit. The thread on the Jet 1221 is listed as 1"-8 ........... Very frustrating!!!
Question: will this work on my harbor freight/excelsior mini lathe? what size stock will this accomodate
Answer: Hi,This chuck id designed to work on any lathe with a 1" x 8tpi spindle, which I believe those 2 are. It will handle stock up to 10" with the 2" jaws included so that will cover those lathes. One thing to note - this chuck can also be used on reversing lathes and has the set screw to lock it to the spindle. If your lathe is not reversing and doesn't not have a register on the spindle (the register is the back part of the spindle on some lathes that is not threaded) don't use the set screw - the set screw should lock to the register, and not the threaded part of your spindle as it will damage the threads and throw the chuck off center. The set screw is only needed if you are reverse turning, and the chuck itself will work just fine on both reversing and non- reversing lathes. That help?
