Answer: It should work for 4 x 4 posts actually 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 drilling straight through the 4 x 4. If you are going to be doing stairs you will have to make yourself a jig based on the rise of your stair angle. I don't think the guide allows for enough angle to work for the stair riser. Hope this helps....
Question: How does it stay secured on work piece
Answer: If its rough work, such as drilling through a 6x6 post, its has holes that allow you fasten the base to the wood with screws. If its finished work, you need to make a jig. I traced the outline of the base on a piece of 3/4 plywood and cut a hole to fit the base. Then i secure the plywood with a clamp.
Question: Regarding the body's construction; Is it plastic or cast metal
Answer: Horizontal parts are almost all plastic; vertical parts are mostly metal (but not cast metal).

Question: I don't understand the whole numbers listed ... 10, 21, 36 etc? I get the 1/8, 3/32, 1/16 etc, but I've never heard of whole number bit size
Answer: There are number drill sizes that typically fall between the typical fractional sizes. The #'s also are guides for screw tap sizes such as a 10-32 screw size. Screw taps often require # drill bits for proper sizing, I believe a 10-32 tap requires a #21 drill bit.
Question: I can not see the 5/32 hole. Is there an equivalent
Answer: This thing is really well-made and a very hard steel. A 5/32 hole with a 5/32 drill would not work, the drill will just bind up. The closest hole is .0028 larger in diameter for clearance for a 5/32 drill. That would be the number 21 hole. john w
