Answer:	Well, they seem to work just fine. I have been using several newer 3Ah Star batteries in my older non-star tools under load for some time now and had not noticed any problems. I have no 4Ah batteries to compare them with, but I just tried out this new 5Ah in several of my older non-star cordless tools: it slips in without a hitch and seems to work as well as any, but I have not yet tested it under loads in an older tool. When the 4Ah batteries came out I had asked local tool store about this myself and they told me I would have to grind down a small piece of plastic under the tool where it goes in, but I have not run into any issues that require modification with this 5Ah battery. From what I know the new Star tools and batteries are well matched to work better to keep from overheating and such. I got a new dual battery 7.25" circular saw recently and tried to use it with some of my older non-star batteries and it kept shutting down after just a little use, and those batteries got very hot. When I swapped them out with a pair of Star batteries and it worked like a champ, so there clearly is a difference where the Star tools may not work right with the older batteries.

Answer:	When I bought these in 2012, they were great. I replaced them in 2017 because they wouldn’t hold much of a charge. I still use them as backups though. I bought the Expert Power brand since I was unsure how long the Makita batteries would have been sitting on the shelf. The NiMH has been pushed aside by the Lithium ion style and I didn’t want to buy “new” batteries that weren’t really that new. They don’t have expiration dates like the alkalines.
