14 best vise for drill press
A vise for a drill press, often referred to as a drill press vise, is an essential tool for securely holding workpieces in place while drilling holes or performing other operations on a drill press. Here's what you need to know about it:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a drill press vise is to provide stability and precision when drilling holes or performing tasks that require accurate alignment and control. It firmly holds the workpiece in place, preventing it from moving or rotating during drilling.
Design: Drill press vises typically consist of two jaws—one fixed and one movable—that can be adjusted to accommodate various workpiece sizes. The movable jaw is adjusted by turning a handle or a threaded rod, allowing you to position it precisely against the workpiece.
Construction: These vises are commonly made of sturdy materials like cast iron or steel to withstand the forces generated during drilling. Some may have replaceable jaw inserts made of softer materials like copper or aluminum to protect delicate or machined surfaces.
Mounting: Drill press vises are designed to be attached to the worktable of a drill press. They often have slots or mounting holes to facilitate easy installation and removal.
Types: There are various types of drill press vises, including standard drill press vises, cross-slide vises, and tilting vises. Cross-slide and tilting vises offer additional flexibility in terms of positioning the workpiece.
Features: Many drill press vises come with features like built-in scales for precise measurements, quick-release mechanisms for easy adjustment, and swivel bases for enhanced versatility.
Size: The size of a drill press vise should match the capacity of your drill press and the size of the workpieces you plan to work on. Vises are available in different jaw widths and opening capacities to suit various needs.
Safety: When using a drill press vise, it's essential to ensure that the workpiece is securely clamped to prevent accidents. Always follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate personal protective equipment when operating a drill press.
In summary, a drill press vise is a crucial tool for anyone using a drill press for drilling holes or performing precise machining operations. It provides stability, accuracy, and safety in holding workpieces securely during the drilling process. Choosing the right vise for your specific needs and ensuring proper installation and operation are essential for achieving optimal results.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this mount on a Harbor Freight 8" 5 speed drill press? How do you mount it |
Answer: | If your drill press has slots in the table, like mine does, just put a couple of bolts through vise and table. |
Question: | How wide are the slots that can be used to clamp this to the table |
Answer: | The slots measure 2.17" L x .51" W. |
Question: | Do the jaws stay parallel when clamping? I've had drill presses where the jaws move a bit when clamped |
Answer: | Yes to a point. I am not aware of any vises that will remain parallel if something is clamped off center and the sides of the piece being clamped are not parallel. This vise has a rod that run the length of the opening down the middle to help keep the movable jaw aligned. As it wears the movable jaw can move more. |
Question: | What is the spacing between the mounting slot (center to center)? Thank you |
Answer: | Hi Craig, it is 5 & 3/16 c to c. Slots are about 1/2 wide. |
Question: | Which stand do I need for this press |
Answer: | We do have our own stand up stand that fit for the press. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is the vice attached to the drill press |
Answer: | Base 9 3/8" x 10 7/8"Bolt slots 7 7/8" center to center |
Question: | I am considering buying this vice but I need what the dimensions are of the base & what is the distance center to center on the bolt slots? Thank you |
Answer: | I use my vise on a vertical mill/drill, although I’ve done very little milling. The jaws on my vise are very tight with no perceivable wobble. Wilton makes good vises, albeit a bit pricey. Sometimes the price is worth it, my vise has proven that to be true. |
Question: | Do the jaws of the vise wobble, meaning when clamping something with half of the jaws will the other half go in or bend in |
Answer: | I used 1/2 " carriage bolts with flat washer and wingnut for quick adjustments , !/2 " is the largest that will work. hope this answers your question. |
Question: | What diameter mounting bolts can you use with this vise |
Answer: | You can technically mount it with lag bolts, but there's no way to have it centered, or even use it to drill without turning the whole table to a weird angle. Got one of these for my 4208 (4802?) (the 8" model) and it's pretty pointless. You could use any vise and just clamp it on as well as this works. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which size sliding vise is the best for the 4214 12inch drill press |
Answer: | I am using the 4214 in a 12 inch press and it works fine for me. Depends on your individual use. These are stiff initially and require some breakin. |
Question: | Is there sufficient clearance to use wen 415cv 5-1/8-inch vise on a 10-inch vise? what is its height bottom of base to top of vise jaws |
Answer: | Exactly 6 inches. |
Question: | This vise (4 inch) appears to be the same as "wilton 11694 4-inch cross slide drill press vise", can anyone comment on this please |
Answer: | better than no slide vise |
Question: | Does this vise come with the mounting hardware (Nuts/Bolts) so that it can be secured onto the drill press |
Answer: | My vice was shipped with two machine bolts, washers and nuts. Appears very designed and fabricated at an exceptional value. I paired it with the WEN 4210 10" drill press I just purchased from Amazon, also an exceptional value. I've used these kinds of products for over 50 years and rate WEN one of the best values around. I remember the original American company and still have a their electric wet stone that still works! I think the Chinese company that now owns WEN is trying to emulate their predecessor's value and integrity. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone know if this will fit on the fordom drill press? That uses the flex shaft as a motor |
Answer: | I don't see why not it's only about 2and1-2inches tall. |
Question: | is compatible whit Wen 4208 8 in |
Answer: | No it is too big for the table on the 4208. I purchased both and ended up returning this. As far as height it will fit but the slots to bolt it on hang over the edges. Could possibly clamp it somehow. If turned diagonally you can line up for 2 bolts to go through but it wouldn’t be very functional to line up with the bit. |
Question: | Do you think this is rigid enough for a milling machine |
Answer: | For milling small parts you should be ok. |
Question: | Will the face pads come off |
Answer: | no pads on the jaws |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would the 3 inch work for milling out an 80 ar lower |
Answer: | Not sure what you mean "an 80 ar lower"? Do you mean 80 mm? I have the 4" jaw width, nice vice but only used it once! When I bought it it was $66? |
Question: | Where is it manufactured |
Answer: | This vise is manufactured in China in the same factory that produces well known American brands that are made to their specs for export |
Question: | What is the exact width of the gap between the jaws when the 3" vise is fully closed? Can it clamp something 3/16" thick |
Answer: | It has a stepped jaw, so the bottom of the jaw closes tight. The step measures .177 wide when it is fully closed and .980 deep. Full height of the Jaw from the top to the bars is 1.650. |
Question: | What is the distance between center to center for the mounting slots |
