12 best milling machine vise
A milling machine vise, also known as a machinist's vise or milling vise, is a specialized tool used in machining operations, particularly with milling machines. It is a crucial component for securely holding workpieces during milling, drilling, or other precision machining processes. Here are some key points about milling machine vises:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a milling machine vise is to securely clamp and hold a workpiece in place while it undergoes various machining operations. This ensures precision and accuracy in the final product.
Design: Milling machine vises are typically made of sturdy materials such as cast iron or steel to withstand the forces and pressures involved in machining. They are designed with jaws that can be tightened around the workpiece to hold it firmly in place.
Types: There are different types of milling machine vises available, including:
- Bench Vise: These are mounted directly onto the workbench and are suitable for smaller workpieces.
- Kurt Vise: Kurt-style vises are popular in machining shops and provide high precision and repeatability.
- Swivel Vise: Some vises can swivel or tilt to hold workpieces at various angles.
- Machine Vise: These are designed to be mounted directly on milling machines, making them integral to the machining process.
Jaws: The jaws of a milling machine vise are the components that come into contact with the workpiece. They may have smooth, serrated, or grooved surfaces to grip different types of materials effectively.
Clamping Mechanism: Milling vises use various clamping mechanisms, such as screws, handles, or levers, to tighten and secure the workpiece. Precision is essential in this process to avoid inaccuracies in machining.
Size and Capacity: Milling machine vises come in various sizes and capacities to accommodate different workpiece dimensions and weights. Choosing the right vise size is crucial for stability and safety.
Alignment and Accuracy: Proper alignment and leveling of the vise are critical to ensure that the workpiece is machined accurately. Many milling machine vises have alignment features to assist with this.
Accessories: Some vises come with additional accessories or attachments, such as swivel bases or clamping kits, to enhance their versatility and functionality.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and inspection for wear and damage, is essential to keep a milling machine vise in good working condition.
Safety: Operators must follow safety procedures when using milling machine vises to prevent accidents and ensure their own safety. This includes wearing appropriate protective gear and using the vise correctly.
Milling machine vises are indispensable tools in precision machining operations, whether in professional machine shops or for hobbyists. They provide the stability and precision needed to create accurate and high-quality machined components.

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought a 4" vise with the swiveling base. The distance between the T slots is too wide for my machine. Would a 3 inch vise have narrower bases |
Answer: | My 3" vise has 4.25" bolt spacing. |
Question: | what is the height and width of the jaws and how wide do the jaws open on the 3 inch and 4 inch vise |
Answer: | I had the 4” version, meaning 4” wide jaws that open 4” or more. I sent mine back because the base was HUGE. No way to bolt it to the bed of my small mill. |
Question: | On 4" model, what is the actual max jaw opening? Distance from mounting bolts to rear of vise |
Answer: | (1) All of my parts are 4.25" or less in the opening and (2) roughly 5" from the mounting holes to the rear lower lip on the back side of the vise. |
Question: | Can I remove the 360 degree base |
Answer: | Yes, the 360 degree base is removable. :-) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which size sliding vise is the best for the 4214 12inch drill press |
Answer: | I am using the 4214 in a 12 inch press and it works fine for me. Depends on your individual use. These are stiff initially and require some breakin. |
Question: | Is there sufficient clearance to use wen 415cv 5-1/8-inch vise on a 10-inch vise? what is its height bottom of base to top of vise jaws |
Answer: | Exactly 6 inches. |
Question: | This vise (4 inch) appears to be the same as "wilton 11694 4-inch cross slide drill press vise", can anyone comment on this please |
Answer: | better than no slide vise |
Question: | Does this vise come with the mounting hardware (Nuts/Bolts) so that it can be secured onto the drill press |
Answer: | My vice was shipped with two machine bolts, washers and nuts. Appears very designed and fabricated at an exceptional value. I paired it with the WEN 4210 10" drill press I just purchased from Amazon, also an exceptional value. I've used these kinds of products for over 50 years and rate WEN one of the best values around. I remember the original American company and still have a their electric wet stone that still works! I think the Chinese company that now owns WEN is trying to emulate their predecessor's value and integrity. |

Product features
Durable Material
The vise is made of QT500 ductile cast iron, with strong toughness, high tensile strength, and wear resistance. Internal refine grinding treatment, smooth use, no jamming, rust, and corrosion resistance.
Hardened Clamping Jaw
The jaws are thickened and finely ground, and the maximum clamping force can reach 19 KN. The lockdown vise machine adopts a fully enclosed design, and iron filings are not easy to enter, which improves the service life of the vise.
Quality Lead Screw
The thread pitch of the ladder screw is larger than the standard screw. The surface is quenched, turned, and ground. It is more wear-resistant, durable, and corrosion-resistant than the ordinary screw, and has higher accuracy.
Adjustable Handle
The universal joint handle is ductile iron material, which is not easy to rust and is flexible and durable. You can precisely adjust the gripping force of the jaws through the handle, and complete the workpiece clamping work excellently.
Precision Design
The guide rail surface is refined ground, seamless contact surface, and the positioning is more accurate. Compared with a standard vise, it can be used upright without affecting the accuracy of clamping the workpiece.
Wide Application
Precision milling vise is the main accessory of precision milling machine and NC/CNC machine tool. Suitable for finishing milling machines, drilling machines, and precision parts.
4" Multifunction Precision Lockdown Vise
During workshop operation, many workpieces minor damage due to their materials or excessive force, which caused work delays or economic losses. Therefore, to avoid damage to your workpiece, we recommend that you use the vise to clamp the workpiece. Our vise has a strong clamping force and can hold the workpiece very firmly. It can ensure the stability of the workpiece and avoid damage.

User questions & answers
Question: | How is the vice attached to the drill press |
Answer: | Base 9 3/8" x 10 7/8"Bolt slots 7 7/8" center to center |
Question: | I am considering buying this vice but I need what the dimensions are of the base & what is the distance center to center on the bolt slots? Thank you |
Answer: | I use my vise on a vertical mill/drill, although I’ve done very little milling. The jaws on my vise are very tight with no perceivable wobble. Wilton makes good vises, albeit a bit pricey. Sometimes the price is worth it, my vise has proven that to be true. |
Question: | Do the jaws of the vise wobble, meaning when clamping something with half of the jaws will the other half go in or bend in |
Answer: | I used 1/2 " carriage bolts with flat washer and wingnut for quick adjustments , !/2 " is the largest that will work. hope this answers your question. |
Question: | What diameter mounting bolts can you use with this vise |
Answer: | You can technically mount it with lag bolts, but there's no way to have it centered, or even use it to drill without turning the whole table to a weird angle. Got one of these for my 4208 (4802?) (the 8" model) and it's pretty pointless. You could use any vise and just clamp it on as well as this works. |
