12 best screw extractor sets
A screw extractor set is a collection of tools designed to help you remove damaged or stripped screws, bolts, or other fasteners. These sets are commonly used in various fields, including automotive repair, woodworking, and home improvement. Screw extractors are especially useful when you encounter screws that are difficult to remove using traditional methods.
Key components of a screw extractor set typically include:
Extractor Bits: These are specialized bits that have a reverse-threaded design. They grip into the damaged screw or bolt and allow you to turn it counterclockwise to remove it.
Drill Bits: Some sets include drill bits to create a small pilot hole in the center of the damaged screw. This hole helps the extractor bit grip better.
Taps and Dies: While not always included in every screw extractor set, taps and dies are used for thread restoration. If the threads on the fastener or the hole are damaged, you can use these tools to repair them.
T-Handle or Wrench: To provide the necessary torque, many sets come with a T-handle or wrench that you can attach to the extractor bit.
Here's how you might use a screw extractor set:
Drill a Pilot Hole: If included in your set, use the appropriate drill bit to create a small hole in the center of the damaged screw.
Insert the Extractor Bit: Attach the extractor bit to the T-handle or wrench and insert it into the hole you drilled or directly into the damaged screw.
Turn Counterclockwise: Apply steady, firm pressure while turning the T-handle or wrench counterclockwise. The extractor bit should grip the screw and begin to turn it out.
Remove the Screw: Once the screw starts to turn, continue rotating it until it is completely removed.
Screw extractor sets come in various sizes and designs to accommodate different screw sizes and types. It's essential to choose the right size and type of extractor for the job to avoid damaging the fastener or the material it's embedded in.
In summary, screw extractor sets are valuable tools for removing damaged or stripped screws and bolts. They typically include extractor bits, drill bits, and sometimes taps and dies, along with a handle or wrench for turning. Using these tools correctly can save you time and frustration when faced with stubborn or damaged fasteners during DIY projects or repairs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this bit fit a screwdriver? And do you think I can remove a laptop screw in this manner |
Answer: | it depends on how crafty you are using similar tools. I used to replace a star screw on a thin RAZER 15" laptop. I placed some pads between the table and the laptop, I didn't push too hard to press the extractor in to the screw so I didn't break the screen. also I would recommend to use very low revolutions in your drill otherwise this thing will perforate the screw and the hole in no time. If you are careful I think you can use it almost anywhere. |
Question: | What is the smallest size bolt that can be removed with this extractor |
Answer: | It's made in China. I couldn't find one made in the US. |
Question: | Does anyone know if these will work on the tiny screws holding an rmr optic baseplate on the slide of a handgun? thanks in advance |
Answer: | You should choose a size smaller than the screw hole, or you can watch the tutorial with a YouTube video |
Question: | Is it safe use on a laptop |
Answer: | Yes. I followed the directions that either came with the remover -- or I looked up on youtube. I can't remember. You may have to experiment with which size you use. I know the first one didn't work, but the second one was right. They did work o.k. with my problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this be able to remove a 4mm diameter screw which the head has broken off of |
Answer: | You might also want to check out the Grabit Micro kit http://www.amazon.com/Alden-4507P-Grabit-Broken-Extractor/dp/B000Q60UOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403282910&sr=8-1&keywords=grabit+micro as it has the smallest screw removers made. |
Question: | Need this to take the bolts out from my fender. Is this strong enough |
Answer: | size of the bolt matters, pre soak with wd-40 to break down rust , try loosening first with wrench if screw under 1/4 inch these will work just fine, pre-drill and use remover head on electric drill, air drill is too strong and will strip out. |
Question: | I can't figure out what grade bolts are for license plates. I have 4 of them with broken heads. Is this kit strong enough |
Answer: | license plate bolts should not be any heavier than grade 4These extractors are the greatest, I removed broken steel bolts that the head had stripped out-follow the instructionsthey are amazing!!!! |
Question: | will these work on 1/4" corroded stainless steel screws |
Answer: | I just tried to use them to remove some 1/4-20 stainless flat head screws that were corroded into a piece of aluminum. The #2 tool, which is spec'd for 1/4" fasteners, broke with very little effort. Since the heads were big enough, I then tried to use the #4 tool, which is supposedly strong enough to remove 3/8" fasteners, and it broke too. I don't expect miracles from these tools but I do expect that they would strip the fastener head before breaking themselves. I consider this a design flaw and would not recommend them for really tough jobs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the smallest screw this will remove |
Answer: | Hello, CPO is an authorized dealer of Ridgid we would prefer you contact them directly so you can get accurate information. You can contact the Manufacturer directly at (866) 539-1710.Thank you for contacting CPO Outlets! |
Question: | Are these a set of left-hand threads? Im looking for something like a tap and die for a stripped allen head but with reverse threading |
Answer: | No, the drill bits are right-hand twist (i.e., "standard"), and the splined extractors are universal (they work effectively on both right- and left-handed thread fasteners). For U.S. fasteners, the set would be more effective if the drill bits were left-hand twist; by running a power drill in reverse, those bits tend to loosen up right-hand threaded fasteners, which makes them easy to remove. Right-hand twist bits tend to drive the fastener in a little deeper rather than loosen them. Regardless, though, the splined extractor is then inserted into the drilled hole. As the extractors are relatively long, you will need to drill the hole fairly deep into the fastener; a few taps with a ball peen hammer should be enough to set it. You then turn it counter-clockwise with the matching turn-nut, using a combination wrench or a deep socket and a ratchet; you could also use an adjustable wrench. |
Question: | Where can i get a replacement no. 1 and no. 2 extractor? rigid does not offer replacements in their catalog |
Answer: | Victor--That set must be a few years old! As you know, the storage cases (for all kinds of tools) seem to be molded plastic these days. As an aside, I received a replacement turnut (#1) because the one in my set was defective. Ridgid sent me a turnut plus a LongGrip; apparently, they are replaced as a unit. The #1 and #2 LongGrips are small diameter and were prone to breakage, which is probably why they were missing. When using them, the extractor diameter should be at least one-half (1/2) the diameter of the fastener you're trying to remove. If you use a too-small diameter extractor, the force exerted can be enough to snap it. I've thought the LongGrips are too long for many uses, and suspect they would be more effective if they were shorter (and thereby less likely to break). You can use a closed-end wrench (such as a combination wrench) on them, but if the splined extractor was shorter, you could employ a deep-well socket, an extension and a ratchet in a confined space. Another possibility would be a crowfoot or flare nut wrenchhead in tight areas. |
Question: | Are the drill bits cobalt, and how well do they hold up |
Answer: | Can't say for sure, based on their appearance. I looked up the Blue Point (Snap-on) equivalent set, which indicates high speed steel (HSS) drill bits are included with it. Snap-on's set runs (currently) at $128.00, so this is a good deal. All the other truck dealers (MAC, Matco and Cornwell) sell the same set, too. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you use an impact wrench with these |
Answer: | I wouldn't recommend using an impact, I always use a breaker bar. |
Question: | Does this set have a 7/32 socket and if not please point me towards a set with that size |
Answer: | These are a tapered left-hand spiral thread. They are forced into a drilled hole, or the inside of a pipe, starting at 1/8 inch. They are graduated in size, so if you strip the hole in the stuck piece, you can go to the next size. I recommend using them with a universal socket, rather than a wrench, allows the extractor to center itself better. I've used this style for over 40 years. |
Question: | Where are these manufactured |
Answer: | These are manufactured in China |

Product description
Wyvern USA Pro E-Z Out is a 5-piece, titanium plated, 4341 High-Speed Steel broken screw extractor set in a black case.
WHY TITANIUM PLATING?
4341 High-Speed Steel is already a hard metal (typically 62-63 HRC) and used in many common tools. However, screws come in a wide range of materials and hardnesses. Titanium plating increases the hardness of the steel to help the bits penetrate tough metals, stay sharper longer and resist rust and corrosion.
WHY A 5-PIECE SET?
The 5 different size bits are designed to remove all common screw sizes.
BIT SIZE SCREW SIZE
#0 smaller than 3/32” / 3mm
#1 3/32” – 5/32” / 3-5mm
#2 5/32” – 7/32” / 4-8mm
#3 7/32” – 9/32” / 5-10mm
#4 9/32” – 3/8” / 6-14mm
HOW DO I USE IT?
Step 1: Set drill to reverse and use a slow speed at all times
Step 2: Start with the drill bit/burnishing tip and drill down 1/16th inch to create a smooth hole
Step 3: Switch the bit to the extraction tip. Using constant downward pressure on the screw and a slow speed the extraction tip will bite into the screw and extract the damaged screw.
TIPS:
*Metal shavings are created during burnishing-remove any debris before extraction
*If extractor threads don’t bite into the screw head switch back to the burnisher and
clean out more of the screw head or switch to the next largest bit size and start again with Step 2
- ✅ 5-PIECE SCREW EXTRACTOR SET - This kit includes a screw extractor bit to remove all common sizes of damaged, stripped or broken screws.
- ✅ MODERN TOOL - typically called an easy out or “EZ out”, this titanium-plated screw remover and extractor kit improves upon the traditional design with a total of 5 bit sizes and full titanium plating.
- ✅ TITANIUM PLATING - increases the hardness of each bit to help them penetrate tough metals, stay sharp longer and resist rust and corrosion.
- ✅ EASY TO USE - set your drill to reverse/counterclockwise and use a slow drill speed. Begin the extraction by using the drill bit/burnishing tip and drill down to create a clean hole. Switch the drill bit to the extraction tip and using consistent, downward pressure (and a slow speed) allow the extraction tip to “bite” into the damaged screw.
- ✅ MUST-HAVE TOOL - whether you are a handyman, handywoman or contractor, screws sometime get damaged or broken. Keep this set in your toolbox to get the damaged screw out and your project back on track.
