13 best bolt extractors
Bolt extractors are specialized tools used to remove damaged or stuck bolts, screws, or other threaded fasteners. These tools are essential for mechanics, DIY enthusiasts, and professionals who frequently work with fasteners. Bolt extractors are designed to grip onto the damaged or stripped threads of a fastener and turn it counterclockwise to loosen and remove it. They are particularly useful when traditional methods, like pliers or wrenches, prove ineffective.
Key features and information about bolt extractors include:
Types of Bolt Extractors:
- Screw Extractors: These are used to remove damaged screws or bolts. They have a tapered, threaded end that bites into the damaged fastener's head for removal.
- Nut Extractors: Designed to remove rounded or damaged nuts, these extractors have a reverse-threaded design to grip onto the nut and loosen it when turned counterclockwise.
- Stud Extractors: These extractors are used to remove broken or damaged studs, which are threaded rods embedded in a surface.
How Bolt Extractors Work:
- Bolt extractors typically have a spiral or fluted design on one end that allows them to dig into the damaged fastener's surface.
- They are turned counterclockwise using a wrench or socket, creating a gripping action that loosens the fastener.
Sizing:
- Bolt extractors come in various sizes to accommodate different fastener sizes. It's crucial to select the correct extractor size to match the fastener you need to remove.
Material:
- High-quality bolt extractors are usually made from hardened steel to withstand the forces required to remove stubborn fasteners.
Use and Safety:
- When using a bolt extractor, ensure that you have a secure grip on the tool and that it is properly seated on the fastener.
- Apply steady, even pressure when turning the extractor to avoid breaking it or damaging the fastener further.
- Safety precautions, such as wearing safety glasses and using the right-sized extractor, are essential to prevent accidents.
Alternatives:
- In some cases, alternatives to bolt extractors include penetrating oils, heat, or even drilling out the fastener. However, bolt extractors are often the preferred method for removing stubborn fasteners without damaging the surrounding material.
Maintenance:
- Keeping your bolt extractors clean and well-maintained will ensure they function correctly and have a longer lifespan.
In summary, bolt extractors are valuable tools for removing damaged or stuck fasteners, such as bolts, screws, nuts, and studs. They come in various types and sizes to accommodate different fasteners and are designed to provide a secure grip for extraction. Proper use and safety precautions are essential when using bolt extractors to avoid further damage or injury.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the bottom of the reverse drill bits hexagonal or smooth |
Answer: | The reverse drill bit it smooth. The extractor is square. |
Question: | made in USA |
Answer: | Made in USA of "foreign components." |
Question: | Can someone tell me where these are made, what does it say on the box? TY |
Answer: | They seem to be made in several places, I assume the case was made in China. The left hand drill bits are stamped Brazil, and the extractors say USA. |
Question: | Are these left-handed drill bits as well? If not they should be a lot of time when the drill bit bites the screw comes out |
Answer: | Just to be clear, 'Bob Vila "Tool Junkie"' is evidently describing a different tool than the one I see currently, and the one other answers to this question are talking about. The current picture shows a set of drill bits along with the spiral extractors — NOT the square type that 'Bob' is talking about. And if you look closely at the drill bits, you can see that they spiral in the opposite direction compared to standard drill bits. That is to say, these are left-handed drill bits. |

The hexagonal flat can also be used with flat wrenches, adjustable wrenches, sockets, and locking pliers. Manufactured with high-grade Heat-Treated Alloy Steel for maximum durability, this tool also features a chrome finish for additional rust protection.
- MULTIPLE USES: This bolt extractor will save hours of frustration on broken exhaust manifolds, oil filler plugs, rounded starter bolts, low grade bolts left in saltwater, painted-over bolts, rusted tight bolts and more.
- TRADITIONAL BOLT EXTRACTORS: Traditional bolt extractors force the user to guess which size the damaged stud is. User questions & answers
Question: | Says gets tigher the more pressure you put on it. which direction? clockwise or counter? cuz the thing i need to take out comes out clockwise |
Answer: | Don't know the exact weight but it's definitely heavier than a run of the mill rake. It's worth the extra weight though because in my opinion it's an excellent rake. I've used it several times to de-thatch my lawn and it works great. But maybe too heavy and firm if for just leaf raking. |
Question: | will it work on a left hand thread |
Answer: | Yes they are and a very good rake. Thanks, Jackie |
Question: | Is there a version that can attach to smaller studs |
Answer: | It's a little of both. The bar that separates the tines is steel, and the mounting plate and screws for the locking mechanism are also metal. The handle lock and the barrel that mounts it to the main handle are both hard plastic. I have a small to medium sized yard, so it suits my needs perfectly. If you have a huge yard, you might want to go with something a little larger. But in my opinion, for the size and the price this is a very well-made rake. |
Question: | Can this be used with an impact wrench |
Answer: | Yes, it is! I found that if I adjust it to a smaller "footprint" it handles the grass clippings very well. I leave it wider to get the tree sticks, small branches, and dog "gifts" and then make it smaller for the finer things like grass clippings and leaves. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will the bolt extractor rust or corrode in a wet environment |
Answer: | My nuts were all regular nuts that were stripped. I haven’t tried wheel locks. I set the socket with a half inch drive by four inch extension and twenty four ounce ball peen hammer. The socket didn’t lose any bite after all twenty four nuts were removed from my F-150. Locks are generally chromed which is very hard. Try turning the nut with a breaker bar and socket while hitting the joint of the breaker bar. That is what I did. |
Question: | Will the black steel rust |
Answer: | No. I don't think you can buy just the 13 mm socket. |
Question: | What is the thickness? I am not sure how much space between the bolt and other components |
Answer: | Although not Recognizable name brand, this a very high quality set. Made of hardened tool steel. Fluted inside just like the sets costing 3-4 times the price. |
Question: | Do I need a wrench or does this come with one |
Answer: | I purchased this set when I stripped one of the 13mm bolt nuts when installing a new sport exhaust on my Porsche. Two of the bolts wound up being so corroded I had to use the 12mm and 10mm remover as well. The set worked like magic. On the nut I stripped I used the same size remover as the original nut. In other words 13mm-13mm. On the 2 that had deteriorated I had to drop in size. If you are removing a 15mm bolt that you stripped, you would use a 15mm removal tool. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Smallest size |
Answer: | As long as the screw is large enough. |
Question: | Hi, will this work on an 1/8 inch Hex bolt |
Answer: | These four bits did not fit into my screw driver that accepts bits. I do think you have a better than even chance to remove a lap top screw. You can also get a carbide tipped drill of the right diameter and just drill the screw out. Make sure you don't use to big a diameter or you won't get a new screw into it. |
Question: | Where is this manufactured? Avoiding Chinese products like the inferior screws I'm needing this for |
Answer: | The smallest BIT 1 has DRILL side thickness 2.8mm and Extractor side thickness 2.5mm. Anything over 3mm is doable considering its done correctly and as Dave said it should be centrally aligned. |
Question: | Would this work on a stripped screw head on an external hard drive |
Answer: | If you can fit the smallest extractor in your screw it will. It doesnt even need to go fully in. I extracted a small phillips head screw on a car starter that was not only torqued in hard but had been "weathered" into place over 150,000 miles of road & weather. I got the tip of the smallest one in about 1/3 to less than 1/2 way of its height and it bit in & got the screw out. Dont use a drill, its fast spin could strip the screw or extractor. I used a 1/4 ratchet and socket but I had a set that had the fine spiral threads on one end & 1/4 socket interface on the other. You could use pliers or vise grips with these on small screws. A very gentle tap can set it in place & in less than 2 turns it should fully bite in and back out the screw, these are fantastic removers. |

Question: | will this get a wheel stud lock off |
Answer: | It was a little awkward to measure, but it is approximately 52 inches long from tip of handle to where the rake is attached |
Question: | What size wrench does the outside of the extrtactor tool require. From the pictures it appears 2 or 3 sizes can be used. I dont care to use channelo |
Answer: | On Amazon: Flexrake 3F Shrub Rake Head Only... about $10 for just the metal rake head which will connect to any wood or metal pole. If you do your bed cleaning on your hands and knees and need just a shorter 3 foot shrub rake, Lowes sells a "childrens" garden rake -- about $7-- which is a short version of the longer handle shrub rake. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the drill bits left handed |
Answer: | In this kit you provide the bits. Not much affordable in left hand threads. This is taps and tap handle only. They arent anything to write home about but do work. That in itself says something |
Question: | Can this be used on smaller electronic screws |
Answer: | This set is suitable for m3-m12 |
Product description
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact Jellas first when you decided to purchase. We will tell if this product suits or not. Another important thing is that you should be careful of the working speed of the electric drill, and should keep the speed under 200 rpm, as the bit may break for high speed use. Also you can use a wrench to extractor. The lower speed, the better, which will also help you not make the frictional locking force out of control and protect the screw extractors not breaking.
- [Technology-Leading] - Jellas 22pcs damaged screw extractor set made by HSS material can create more extraction possibilities for broken screws or bolts of different sizes (2-12mm) and can work on irregular and jagged irregular cuts; Extra gift of 2 common sizes (#3 & #6) enhances the longer service life of the product
- [Most Cost-effective] - HSS material with maximum protection against rust and corrosion, hardness can reach 64.5 HRC for strength, flexibility and durability; The notches on the extractor bits produce greater force for bolts that are difficult to remove; Aluminum box packaging, delicate and durable, can be presented as gifts to friends and relatives
- [Switching Tips Freely] - With the support of extension tips and a socket adapter, the separately designed burnishing tips and extraction tips allow for switching at will without wasting time and energy
- [Meet Any Requirement] - The extension bit holder (6.35 mm) and the socket adapter (4 mm) of the screw removal set fit all electric drills of any brand; The magnetism inside the support and the adapter prevents the tips from falling
- [Simple to Use] - The manual is included, everybody knows how to use; Separated burnishing tips (for perforation) and extraction tips simplify the working process, it is not necessary to turn the extractor upside down and rotate the drill holder again to extract

JELLAS Damaged Screw Extractor
Designed Tools seed New Stories
If you forget the pilot hole or drive a screw too quickly, a power screwdriver can spin its bit fast enough to strip away the cross or other shape in a screw. Once that’s gone, the screw can’t be driven deeper or backed out. For screws where the stripped screw head rests flush with the wood (and you don’t want to risk damage to your project), then you may need a screw extractor.
Jellas 22 pieces extractor screws to extract screws made of advanced High Speed steel (H.S.S), twice tempered for extra hardness and is up to 64-65HRC; It can extract screws from 2 to 12 mm. Our screw extractor set works with any drill and any size of screw or bolt, great for those stubborn, broken, blocked or damaged and also for simple removal of screws, Jellas Screw extractors are designed to help you with that.
Attentions
The screw extractor is to keep the frictional locking force between the #drill/#extr bits and the damaged screws under control which will take a few more times if you are a new user.
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact out seller center first when you decided to purchase.
Instructions for Use
Drilling the Screw
Step1, It is better to use a drill rather than a screwdriver.
Step2, Please press the reverse button on the drill to prepare the electric drill for use.(Don’t need to reset the reverse button the whole process.)
Step3, Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw. Hold the drill bits up to the screw or fastener you need to remove. The right one will be slightly less wide than the screw head. When you find the right one, attach it to your drill.
Step 4, Line the drill bit up with the center of the screw. Place the drill bit in the divot you created earlier. Move slowly as you begin to drill. Too much force will damage the screw. Focus on holding the drill bit steady so it drills straight down into the screw head.
Step5, Drill a hole for the extractor. You will need to drill somewhere between 1⁄8 inch (3.2 mm) and 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) into the screw head. The depth depends on the screw extractor you have. Hold up the extractor to compare it to the hole you drilled. If the extractor doesn’t fit, keep drilling to widen the hole.
Pulling out the Screw
Step1, Insert the extractor into the drilled hole. The spiral end of the extractor goes into the hole. You can tap it with a hammer to make sure it’s in there, but don’t force it. The loose end should have a tap handle, which looks like a T, for you to hold onto. Twist the extractor counterclockwise until you can’t turn it anymore.
Step2, Twist the extractor with a wrench or drill. Grip the top of the extractor with a wrench. Continue to twist it counterclockwise until the screw pops free. Many extractors are designed to work with drills. Attach the free end of the extractor to the drill and turn on the drill to turn the screw counterclockwise. It’ll come out without much resistance.
