13 best stone sharpenings

Stone sharpening, often referred to as whetstone sharpening, is a traditional method used to sharpen blades and tools. Sharpening stones, also known as whetstones, are abrasive stones used for sharpening knives, scissors, chisels, and other cutting tools. These stones come in various materials, such as natural stones like Arkansas stones or synthetic stones made of aluminum oxide or silicon carbide.

Here are the key points related to stone sharpening and its connection to hand tools, power hand tools, and tools for home improvement:

  1. Types of Sharpening Stones:

    • Natural Stones: Natural sharpening stones are quarried and are often considered high-quality. Examples include Arkansas stones, novaculite, and Belgian stones.
    • Synthetic Stones: Synthetic sharpening stones are man-made and come in various grits, which determine their coarseness or fineness. Silicon carbide and aluminum oxide are commonly used materials for synthetic stones.
  2. Grit Levels:

    • Sharpening stones come in different grit levels, ranging from coarse to fine.Coarse stones (lower grit) are used for repairing damaged or very dull edges, while finer stones (higher grit) are used for honing and polishing the edges to razor sharpness.
  3. Sharpening Process:

    • To sharpen a blade, the stone is lubricated with water or oil (depending on the type of stone) to create a slurry that helps in the sharpening process.
    • The blade is then moved across the stone at a specific angle, with consistent pressure applied to achieve an even edge.
  4. Hand Tools and Power Hand Tools:

    • Sharpening stones are commonly used to sharpen various hand tools such as knives, scissors, chisels, and plane blades.
    • For power hand tools like electric saws or drill bits, specialized sharpening attachments and devices are available. However, some tools, such as woodworking chisels, are often sharpened using traditional sharpening stones.
  5. Tools Home Improvement:

    • Sharpening stones are essential tools for DIY enthusiasts and professionals working in home improvement. Sharp tools are safer and more efficient, making the sharpening process crucial for maintaining the quality and usability of tools.

Proper maintenance and regular sharpening of tools using sharpening stones are essential skills for craftsmen, chefs, and anyone using cutting tools regularly. Choosing the right type of stone and mastering the technique can significantly enhance the longevity and effectiveness of hand tools and power hand tools in various home improvement projects.

User questions & answers

Question: What angle is the angle guide
Answer: My opinion is that the Lansky system is perfect for the knife you're looking at. The SRK has a 6" blade with a 3/16" backbone. I'm thinking this is probably the sweet spot for the system. The only knife I have actually had a problem with is my little red Victorinox Swiss Army Classic. The blade on this knife is so thin and shiny slick the clamp jaws have trouble holding it tightly and the blade height (back to edge) is so short that even the 25 degree angle slot will make the stone cut into the tip of the clamp. All that means is that larger blades seem to work better than smaller ones. One piece of advice: Don't be a momentary moron like me and read all the instructions so you will see where they tell you to basically set the stone face on a table with the rod so both align properly. Instructions are sometimes actually good!Almost forgot! Lansky has some online instructions regarding blade lengths: http://lansky.com/index.php/products/dlx-5-stone-system/#3
Question: What is the glove made of?metal wire
Answer: This set has 5 different stones. The extra course stone is LS70, course stone is LS120, medium stone is LS280, fine stone is LS600, ultra fine is LS1000. Hope this helps!
Question: How much does it weigh
Answer: I own this system, skip it. I suspect most guys who really appreciate quality knives also want a good sharpening tool. As a collector of folding pocket knives and kitchen knives, about 35 of each, I have many of the most popular sharpening systems. Sharpeners have one thing in common they take quite a bit of time to use, skill no matter what anyone says, and pretty dramatic differences in success no matter how much you practice. From watching many videos of pro knife makers sharpening theirs the most common technique involves a fast rotating belt or stone. Most Japanese quality knife makes use BIG spinning stones, i.e. 5" x 48"+ diameter! Pro sharpening services also use large belt type, i.e. 2-4" wide x several feet long spinning fast. Work Sharp WSKTS Knife and Tool Sharpener makes a $70 smaller version of the belt type. It has built in guides is about 3/4"wide x 6" and spins much slower than the big ones BUT it is forgiving because it removes material much slower while many times faster than any of the hand operated types. Touching up kitchen knives takes a few minutes start to finish with one of several belt "grits". A belt lasts through 100+ sharpens. It is so fast and so good I NEVER use any of my others anymore. There is a fancier version for about $125 designed by Ken Onion a justifiably famous knife designer. If you anal retentive and small minded fanatic like I was keep using your slow, SLOW hand sharpeners noting with pride how sharp your blades are. After a couple sessions with the Work Sharp WSKTS Knife and Tool Sharpener you'll be born again with edges better than ever but you must have electricity in you home, LOL Happy Trails
Question: What is the size of the stone
Answer: yes. I have sharpened as many as 100 knives a day using hand - not powered equipment. and I do not freehand sharpen. the precise knife edge of the Lansky or the Edge Pro sharpeners will blow away any free hand edge. you can sharpen up to a 10 inch knife with the lansky without moving the clamp. I can tell you as a professional the Lansky is the best of the clamp sharpeners. there are however three errors in the lansky directions. 1. always sharpen dry. NEVER use oil on sharpening stones. the edge will be sharper and the edge will last longer if you sharpen dry. America is the only nation on earth that pushes oil sharpening. 2. man made stones are better than diamond stones. man made stones have the same cutting power from top to bottom. diamond grit plates do not maintain their cutting power. 3. I flatten and clean the Lansky stones after every 5 knives. flatten the stones on sand rubbed on a patio block or thick glass. flat and clean they will sharpen until the stone wears down to the plastic holder!

Question: how big of a knife can this sytem sharpen. im looking at getting an cold steel SRK but want to be sure i can care for it properly first
Answer: Yes, it will.
Question: Can someone please tell me the coarseness of the stones? I.e. medium stone, fine stone etc
Answer: You tube will be the the best set of instructions..
Question: Which is the better system the stone or the diamond and is the diamond worth the xtra cost
Answer: I didn’t pay attention but I am guessing around three pounds.
Question: Would this work well with a Wusthof 8" Classic chef knife
Answer: I am no expert, but I would say no. These did an excellent job bringing some useless knives back to razor sharp, but I believe attempting to sharpen a serrated blade would fail to adequately sharpen the blade and would ruin the stones

User questions & answers

Question: will this stone sharpen a pair of Gingher scissors
Answer: You only get one but they show the 3 different grits. These aren't stones but rather diamond embedded steel plates.
Question: What lubricant is recommended
Answer: Presumably, by the time you get to the extra fine stone all the heavy work is done so I'm puzzled by your question. If what you mean is many edges to be sharpened will 20-30 different blades, daily use, daily touch-up with this stone be considered 'heavy' use? If so then yes, I'm pleased. A couple passes on each side, some stropping and away I go. Leather from 2oz to 14oz straight or curved slices like cutting through soft butter.
Question: Will this work on an axe
Answer: Here's the "what for" on this item You absolutely can sharpen any metal on this stone, but you will be limited to the actual sharpness and bevel width. This stone is made with larger diamonds than most coarse stones. Because of this, as well as its length and width (and skid-free bottom), it can take nicked and out-of-true edges and get them back on track very quickly (use water only, no oils). It is a 2X coarse blade, and awesome doing what it is intended to do (this includes grinding down chisels, whittling tools, whetstones, iron, steel, etc). It could be used to put a decent edge on your blade, but it really is limited to coarse work needed to prepare it for the proper stone; I recommend soft stones from Arkansas, they make great whetstones for fine honing, but any quality soft stone is the next step. To make this long answer longer, the reason the DMT is mentioned and recommended to flatten whetstones is that, again, the large diamonds go to work quickly and grind down uneven, pocked, or dipped anomalies on the much softer soft stones which makes plumbing a straight edge on a fine blade much more effective. So, basically, you keep the DMT to grind the soft stone to level, use it to work the blade to rid it of abnormalities, and then let that rejuvenated hard and straight blade make woo with that fine Arkansas (or personal choice of) whetstone (water, spit, and oil are optional). Sorry for the long story, take care of the ones you love, thank a vet, prepare, prepare, prepare, and have a great September; especially those of you who have the privilege of experiencing the changing of the colors! Also, it's the time of year we wait for; muleys, white tail, wapiti, antelope, and turkey (plus whatever else ya'll get to hunt and stock in your territory). Prep them blades, clean and sleep with them guns, shake them cartridges to loosen up and distribute the powder, and keep field stones handy for quick edges for the cold, morning, field dressing...And thanks for the question!
Question: Does it come padded, so it don't break while shipping
Answer: Allene is correct re coarse, fine and extra fine. However, grit sizes can be confusing because of the different grading systems of the particles. Abrasives with the same grit number can actually have different particle sizes. It all depends upon the grading system. For example a 2,000 grit water stone would not have the same particle size as a 2000 grit wet dry paper. There is even a difference among the paper abrasives. The Europeans use the FEPA system. Their abrasive sizes are preceded by a P (e.g. P220). Americans use the CAMI system. CAMI just has the number (e.g. 220). Again identical numbers might have different size particles when measured in microns. Therefore, I always try to get a reading on the particle size in microns. A micron is 1/1,000th of a mm. DMT also makes Extra Extra Coarse which is a 120 mesh (thats 120 little openings per sq. in.) and particle size of 120 microns. Extra Coarse is 220 mesh and a particle size of 60 microns. The coarse grit is 45 microns. Fine is 25 microns. Extra Fine is 9 microns. There is also an Extra Extra Fine which is 8000 mesh that is a 3 micron particle size. > 50 microns is considered grinding material. 15 - 50 microns is honing material and less than 15 microns is considered polishing material. I hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Are other degree guides available. ........thank you
Answer: No, there are no other degree guides available expect the one provided with the product.
Question: Can this be used to sharpen wood lathe chisels
Answer: Yes, We recommend using flat blade chisels.
Question: Can this blade be used to sharpen straight razors
Answer: Yes sir. Just be careful of the angle of the blade. I am a butcher.and I try to keep a angle of 20 degrees when sharpening my knives.
Question: Can i use any oil or water instead
Answer: You have to soak it in water for 20 min prior to use. During the sharpening process, it's important to keep the stone wet by sprinkling water on it. Do this as soon as it starts to get dry. You want a slurry of water on the stone at all times. The slurry consists of water and some of the metal dust generated while sharpening. Do not wipe this off during the process because that is what helps hone the knife. Do not use oil on this stone because you will ruin it. Hope this helps!

Sharp Pebble 1000/6000 Dual Grit Sharpening Stone with Angle Guide

Made from aluminium oxide(corundum) material, provides a perfect two side grit combination to sharpen you’re knives and tools in a short time. Two stones for cost of one.

1000 Grit: Your go-to sharpening stone. If your knives have lost their edge and need a good sharpen, then this is the grit you should start with.

6000 Grit: Acts as a bridge between sharpening and superfine finishing. Used for super-fine finishing and to refine your knife edge.

Sharp Knife Works Better

Save hundreds of dollars in the purchase of new knives by revitalizing your existing ones. Whether you are a professional or occasional chef, an active outdoor/camping person this is one of the must-have tool. A sharp blade is predictable. When it strikes or is drawn across the food’s surface, it won’t slip. With a dull knife, it’s only a matter of time until you badly cut yourself.

A dull knife slows you down, while a sharp knife makes prep easier and more enjoyable.

Razor Sharp Results

Keep your everyday kitchen knives extremely sharp with this 1000/6000 grit Sharp Pebble Dual Grit Water-stone. Sharp knives need less brute force to cut than dull knives.

Less brute force means less damage to the food, which you can easily see by looking closely at the cut. Delicate ingredients, like herbs, will look fresher for longer if you slice through them cleanly, whereas a dull knife will crush more of the cells surrounding the cut, which ultimately accelerates wilting and discoloration.

Question: Can I use these stones to sharpen my chisels plane irons and other woodworking tools
Answer: The description states; "For use with Bosch 1276D and 1276DVS Belt Sanders". I made it fit another brand of 4x24 sander, by adding screw holes to match the hold down strip. If you feel like a little alteration to the graphite pad is as worthwhile as I did, it made a BIG difference in the performance and longevity of the belt. It is a small price for a chance at much better performance. I hope this helps. I think you will be very happy with the results.

With long, continuous flat surface, this sharpening stone is ideal for honing most kitchen cutlery, up to an 8-inch chef's knife, and also puts an edge on tools with either flat or pointed blades. Measuring 8 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 3/8 inch thick, the stone is great for long strokes and has non-skid rubber feet to prevent it from sliding during sharpening. The surface is coated with tiny particles of diamond, the hardest known material for sharpening, in a 600-mesh fine grit, enabling this sharpening stone to put an extremely sharp edge on blades. The surface should be moistened before sharpening and the blade should be passed over the whetstone with light pressure at a 20-degree angle to get the proper edge without dulling it. DMT generously vows to replace any product found to be defective free of charge. --Cristina Vaamonde

The DMT Difference

DMT uses micronized monocrystalline diamonds, precisely sized for a more uniform diamond surface. No other diamond sharpeners offers micronized monocrystalline diamond and most offer the lesser grade poly-crystalline diamond. Mono-crystalline is like an ice cube made up of one particle holding its form while poly-crystalline is like a snow-cone made up of many small particles that get sheared off during use.

Coverage: DMT’s process assures the most diamonds per square inch in the industry providing a more durable sharpening surface.

Surface Flatness: DMT bench stones are engineered flat, assuring even contact with the knife or tool.

Choice of Diamond Surfaces

Interrupted or polka dot surface for which DMT is famous has slightly recessed holes that will collect metal fines (swarf) removed during sharpening to prevent loading. Fast sharpening action; not recommended for pointed or very small tools.

Continuous surface presents a more conventional looking sharpening surface. Fast sharpening action; able to use on small surface edges.

DMT Commitment

DMT is committed to providing excellent diamond sharpeners in the marketplace. If the sharpener is found to be defective, we will replace it.

About Sharpening with DMT

There is a ‘break-in’ period for your diamond stone. Initially, it will feel especially rough but will smooth over time without impacting performance. Let the diamonds do the work; just light strokes with the edge to sharpen, same number of strokes each side. Approximately 5 or 6 strokes per side (depending upon condition of edge) compared to 30 strokes per side on a conventional stone, saving time and extending the life of the knife or tool. Start with a coarser grit and work to finer grits.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the same grit as the corse stone in sharpmaker kit
Answer: Yes
Question: What kind of finish will this produce? I'm looking for a nice toothy/polish edge will this offer that
Answer: I have the sharpmaker version of this stone and for a toothy/polish edge, this would work great. Your edge will shine and be sharp, but still toothy enough to get to work. I put my s35vn and s30v on this and leaves an amazing edge. It might take some time if you are wanting to get that polish in there though in the begining. If you have a lot of reprofile work or need to remove a lot of material, I'd get a coarser stone to take care of that first, but then this for ongoing maintenance. On a couple of my knives with those steels, this is the only stone I will use for ongoing maintenance. Interesting fact, I was watching a bladehq video of the Chris Reeves knives tour and the assembler was using the smaller version of this stone to do the fine filing on the blade to get to adjust the lockup.
Question: what grit is the medium stone most comparable to
Answer: Per Spyderco, their ceramic bench stones are not measured in grit, however the approximate equivalents are Medium=600 grit, Fine=1200 grit, Ultra Fine=2000 grit
Question: Does this sharpen D2 steel
Answer: Have not tried with D2. However, have frequently used with high carbon steal and other high Rockwell stainless. I’ve sharpened knives, axes, planes, and shears with this stone with one consistent result; it removes metal like a rasp and leaves a smooth fine grit finish. I’ve been using this stone since 1995. I’m on my second generation and have yet to find anything better. You won’t be disappointed. Hope that helps.
