Answer:	It probably could butbI had to use a metal file to sharpen the tip so that it would actually penetrate between the splits to widen them up. I would personally look for another tool - this one is not so good.

Some workable answers already. I have used strap wrenches, although they are a little bit unwieldy. A large pair of these Cobra pliers would work, although it would likely damage the lid. Soft-jaw pliers would be better (I think that both Crescent and Knipex sell these). This inexpensive handheld item (search on Amazon) is supposed to good up to about 3": "Bottle Opener for Twist-Off Type Caps." The best choice, it appears to me, would be this inexpensive cabinet undermount unit that is supposed to be good up to 6" (and is rated at 4.8): "The Grip Jar Opener."

Answer:	yes there is a opening at the bottom. tin snips do fit but it's a tight fit. you will need to work them in. mine broke in about after a week of use. I use my tins snips everyday.
