Will these work for a sewing machine

The listing shows it as grade B7- you'll have to look up to see what that means in characteristics of the steel. But in general this is not a high grade steel. At 1" diameter it still will have a high tensile load capability. If you're building something that really requires a higher grade go to site like Metal Supermarket and look at the different alloy characteristics for round stock to see what will meet your requirements. Be aware that if you get harder steel it will likely mean a trade-off on another characteristic (like ductility) or your ability to drill a hole in it. And "strongest" and "hardest" don't necessarily come together. "Strongest" in particular isn't even a full definition as there are different types of strong. If you have s local metal supplier like Metal Supermarket call them and tell them what you want to do with it- they can help with a reco on what type you need and if the lowest cost is still perfectly adequate for your use.
