14 best nail pullers
Nail pullers are essential hand tools used in construction, woodworking, and various DIY projects for the removal of nails, staples, or other fasteners from surfaces or materials. Here are some key points about nail pullers:
Types of Nail Pullers: There are several types of nail pullers available, each designed for specific tasks:
- Claw Hammer-Style Nail Puller: This tool features a claw-shaped head similar to that of a hammer. It is commonly used for removing nails from wood surfaces.
- Flat-Head Nail Puller: This type has a flat, chisel-like head that is effective for removing nails embedded in wood or other materials.
- End-Cutting Nail Puller: These have a V-shaped head designed to grip the nail from the side, making them suitable for pulling out nails with limited access.
- Pry Bar-Style Nail Puller: These nail pullers have a long, flat body with a curved, nail-gripping tip. They provide leverage for extracting stubborn or deeply embedded nails.
Materials: Nail pullers are typically made of durable materials such as steel or alloy, ensuring they can withstand the force required for nail removal.
Usage: Nail pullers are used to grip the head of a nail or fastener and extract it from the material. They are handy for tasks like dismantling wooden structures, salvaging reusable materials, or repairing damaged surfaces.
Leverage: Most nail pullers are designed with a curved or beveled end to provide leverage when pulling nails. This makes it easier to remove nails without damaging the surrounding material.
Grip and Comfort: Look for nail pullers with ergonomic handles that provide a comfortable grip and reduce hand fatigue during extended use.
Size and Weight: Nail pullers come in various sizes and weights, so choose one that suits your specific needs and preferences. Smaller, lightweight models may be more portable, while larger ones offer increased leverage.
Maintenance: Regularly inspect and clean your nail puller to ensure it remains in good working condition. Lubricate moving parts as needed and replace any damaged or worn components.
Safety: Exercise caution when using nail pullers to prevent injury. Wear appropriate protective gear, such as safety glasses, to protect your eyes from flying debris.
Price Range: Nail pullers are available in a range of prices, depending on their design, quality, and brand. Consider your budget and the intended use when making a selection.
Nail pullers are valuable tools for anyone involved in construction, woodworking, or home improvement projects. They simplify the process of removing nails and fasteners, allowing for efficient and damage-free extraction. When using a nail puller, always follow safety guidelines to ensure safe and effective operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this pry open a door |
Answer: | For doing what you're describing the classic tool is a BIG pair of "end nippers" such as Channellock 148-14. It's amazing that a "wire cutter" can be such a great nail puller too. |
Question: | How wide is the head of the puller? I need to use it in a 1/2" channel |
Answer: | Absolutely. It takes a little technique but once learned it works great. Open the hawa, slam it down so the jaw tips, are below the head of the nail, pry away. It does leave a dent in the wood so it''s not for fine work. It is intended for opening wood crates and un- nailing pallets. |
Question: | Which size would be best for deck boards and general exterior stuff |
Answer: | Very well, once you learn how. No directions with it. I was holding it straight up and down and trying to get it lined up on the nail head. Since I'm on the back side of 70 and not a contortionist, that didn't work. I was pulling deck nails. Kneel down on one knee and hold the top at about a 45 degree angle away from you. Put the back claw next to the nail head, straighten it up and slam the handle at least twice. That should seat the claw in the wood under the head. Then just push towards the foot. Once you've got a good grip on the nail, extend the handle up for extra leverage. Be careful when you are slamming the handle. Be sure your bottom hand is under the stopper. A picture would have been worth 1000 words. |
Question: | Is this pry bar made in the USA |
Answer: | I'm not sure where mine is right now but by memory I would say about a quarter of an inch. They are wide enough to grab the nail head and pull it out. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this work from the head end to remove previous deck nails |
Answer: | It depends. Door to a safe? No. Hollow interior residential door. Yes. In between, I would get a bigger pry bar. |
Question: | Would it be possible to shorten the rod for use on thinner wood |
Answer: | The head of the nails puller is 3/4 in wide. Good luck |
Question: | Can this tool drive a nail forward, from the head side of the nail, into or through a half inch board as well |
Answer: | We used the 11" on deck boards and it worked great! |
Question: | Can this tool drive a nail forward, from the head side of the nail, into or through a half inch board as well |
Answer: | The 11" I received is marked Made in Japan. |

Question: | Do you get the one pictured in the description or the flat one shown in the side pictures |
Answer: | No. The far end of the nail needs to be expelled into open space, like a trash can or your yard. :-) |

User questions & answers
Question: | There are devices that will pull the nails well enough for about 4 bucks, if you have a gun do you get any value from the nail setter |
Answer: | Yes, it can definitely pull pneumatic staples, maybe even better than nails some times |
Question: | What is the difference between 1-(pack), (improved.) and single pack? they all look like the same product with widely different prices |
Answer: | this tack puller works great doing the job its intended to do, however I will say I was pulling out panel nails and it was not thin enough to get under without damaging the panel wood. Lucky for me I didn't care. not sure there is a tool thinner but good luck. |
Question: | Does this work well with the ridge cap shingles |
Answer: | Somewhere deep inside the bowels of an Amazon warehouse, a screw driver and a week puller met, fell in love and whalah, ya got yourself one of these things. But - in this case you got twins...and they're so cute, not terribly useful, but they don't eat much and generally stay in their drawer without complaining too much. Hope that helps, next question........... |
Question: | Will this not work on architectural shingles |
Answer: | Probably |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it for taking out small nails with no heads |
Answer: | That is true for pulling nails. The advantage to this tool is to allow you to drive a nail near the edge of the shingle without taking the shingle above off. That is why the tool has an offset in the handle.it is slid unde the shingle and over the nail head; the tool is then struck to drive the nail. It is for repairs, not for new installation. I hope this helps you. |
Question: | is this a good tool to grab sunken nails from older pallets or should i get a pallet breaker tool instead |
Answer: | Probably should try one before buying multiples. These have a purpose but I never see roofers use them. They’re kind of gimmicky. I am an insurance adjuster and talk to roofers every day. 1 of these would be all an entire roof crew would need. |
Question: | Does it have a prying claw at each end? The photos are side-on, so it's impossible to tell |
Answer: | I think it would be a great tool to have, because it is very useful on all types of shingles.. it is very durable. Great at spot repair and for tough nail removal.. |
Question: | Is it made in America |
Answer: | Yes this tool does work on dimensional shingles as a roofer that makes his living doing roof repairs I had my share of ripping shingles while trying to lift and nail so just get the hang of the tool and you will be a hapoy and less fustrated roofer on your next repair |
