User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a good fire wood splitting axe |
Answer: | 17.5 inch For soft wood. kindling yes a perfect tool. Hardwood if it's cold might split ok. I have not tried it out on too many hardwoods. I think I would stick to a maul, wedge or an full size axe for the hardwoods like oak, cherry and ash even with the 23.5 axe. Less stain on the body. Let the "tool do the work" |
Question: | Does this come with a sheath that will protect the cutting edge |
Answer: | It comes with a plastic holder with a tunable lock to prevent the blade from dislodging from the holder. If you are looking for a sheath for the ax the Internet sells them . |
Question: | Whats the length of the actual blade, the cutting edge |
Answer: | Respectively is 60 cm and 9 cm |
Question: | Does it come with a sheath |
Answer: | It comes with a plastic cover that doubles as the packing. Not that impressive, wish it came with a canvas or leather sheath. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Steel type |
Answer: | Did some digging for you. Best info I could find is: It's made from Forged carbon steel, HRC 50-56. Hope that helps. |
Question: | how do you sharpen it |
Answer: | Use a 4" grinder with a very fine flap wheel, and sharpen the blade WITH the slope of the head - not against. Use a diamond hone to finish it. |
Question: | On the description it says country of origin:China. On the website: Made in Finland. What's the deal |
Answer: | That's what I'm trying to figure out too. The fiskars website no longer says made in Finland. Just designed in Finland. And "Made in Finland" doesn't seem to be molded into the top of the handle on the axe head anymore. My 9 inch Gerber only says "Finland" on the head but it does say "Made in Finland" on the card it came attached to. I paid extra for that Gerber because I was able to ascertain that it really was made in Finland. I'm not have as much luck with this 14 inch. Too bad they don't include images of the card stock, box, whatever so a person can know beforehand. Usually I assume that when Country of Origin is not included it's because they're not very proud of what they've did. So I assume it's likely manufactured in China. I have some Svea 123 backpacking stoves. The old ones are stamped "Made in Sweden" and they really are. The new ones are simply stamped "Sweden" which isn't really a lie since the company is based there. You'd be surprised how many people see "Sweden" stamped on the stove base and take it to mean it was made in Sweden. My fear is that is what's happening here. People see "Finland" stamped on the axe head and read "Made in Finland" into it. Then again, maybe Fiskars doesn't play that game? BTW, I'm not saying it's not a good hatchet if it's made in China. But I suspect the odds go down unless Fiskars has a heavy presence at the factory, to insure quality control. |
Question: | Will this last in case of a Zombie outbreak? How many Zombies would this be able takedown? Will this handle clearing a horde of Zombies |

About Gerber: A History of Innovation
Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that have contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.
It makes sense, really. An idea man gets the idea of a lifetime and turns it into a major outdoor brand--one that commands respect among knife lovers and knife makers alike. And now that same high regard is spreading in new directions, in the form of many outstanding products such as tools, personal L.E.D. lighting, and more.
What's in the Box
Gerber 22-41420 Gator Axe II with internal saw and nylon sheath.

A saw can insert inside the handle and be held in place by an internal magnet. The axe head is an all-business rendering of forged steel, noted for edge retention.
- Forged steel head for blade durability + striking force.

Question: | there are 2 model numbers for this thing 30-000715 30-000792 do you know what the differance is? on gerbers site |
Answer: | The only thing I could see is when it was first introduced on the site it was originally credentials required. When it finally came out it was available to everyone and gerber probably never took one off the site. |
Question: | Does anyone carry this as a breaching tool on duty? i'm an leo looking for feedback on it's usefullnes as a breaching tool |
Answer: | Carried it with narcotics and swat. One of those tools that you don’t need until you do. Takes a beating however draws a lot of attention from the public. Crow bar decent fixed blade knife etc will work. |
Question: | Can it cut log |
Answer: | It comes fairly dull, but I sharpened it and yes it will cut anything I have tried! The back side has a knurled striking surface for use as a hammer or as a log splitting wedge. I have found this tool to be quick handle and keep it under the backseat of the truck! |
Question: | Is it made in China |
Answer: | The box it came in said it was made in USA. But no where on the tool itself is it stamped. I bought a Gerber knife also and it was marked Made in CHINA on that box. |

Downrange Tomahawk
When you’re in a situation where time is of the essence, you can’t waste time wondering if you have the right tool for the job. No matter what’s on the other side of that door or barrier, you want a tool with the same single-minded determination as the man wielding it. The Gerber Tactical Downrange Tomahawk is a marvel of simplicity and efficiency in service of solving serious problems. No moving parts to break or jam, no extraneous gimmicks to get in the way—just a well thought-out design and three-quarters of a century of Gerber craftsmanship in your hands.
Triple-Purpose Ax Head
There’s no arguing with a tomahawk. This is largely due to the Downrange’s three-tiered approach to tactical breaching. The ax head’s beveled edge is capable of chopping through drywall and turning walls and doors to splinters. The backside of the ax head functions as hammer for getting through hinges, locks, doorknobs and anything else that’s there to slow you down. The third threat is a pry bar at the end of the handle, controlled by a cutaway grip in the ax head.
Serious Pry Bar
Opposite the business end of the Downrange Tomahawk is a hefty pry bar. With a solid marriage of physics and force, you can confidently pry away using the cutaway handle in the ax head for leverage. The 420HC steel body with Cerakote will not bend or break, and the desert tan G-10 handle has integrated scales to keep the tool firmly in your hands no matter the conditions.
Packs Like a Pro
Tomahawks don’t exactly fit in your pocket, so it comes with a sheath that’s as practical as the tool itself. No matter what line of duty you serve in, if this tool is going to make it to where the action is, it has to be easy to carry. Which is where the MOLLE-compatible sheath comes into play. It readily attaches to your pack, standard webbing or body armor, so it goes where you do.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the length of 28 inches inclusive of the head or just the handle |
Answer: | Yes axe lengths are measured from top of the head to bottom of the handle. |
Question: | I am 5'2" would the Fiskars 28" be a better choice for me than the 36" ? I want to split firewood into smaller pieces for my fire pit |
Answer: | That seems like it would be the better choice. I'm not sure if there's a weight difference between the 25 and the 27 but seems in your case the 25 would be better suited for you. |
Question: | |
Answer: | I purchased the Fiskars with the 36 inch handle for my son as a gift he is 5'9" and he really likes the longer handle. It really does split wood like they claim. I read a lot of reviews and from a 67 year woman to a 5'6" guy and every review that I read prefered the longer handle. There were people that purchased the 28" and liked it until they got the 36". I would watch the video as well as read the tons of reviews that are out there. The only draw back is now Fiskars is starting to have them made in China,to me that can only mean a lack of quality. When I made my purchase I made sure that the one I purchased came from Finland, that is where they were originally made. When I received it I could not believe how sharp this thing was and how light. It really has an awesome balance. But all and all I really think you would be really pleased with the longer handle. |
Question: | I am 5'6", which handle length would be best for my height, the 36" on the X27, or the 28" on the X |
Answer: | Probably the 28", but to be safe you can always get the 36" and choke up on it. Do you use a chopping block or split on the ground? If you always use a block, the 28" will probably work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the head of the axe have a tendency to fall out if used as a hammer |
Answer: | My experience has been that simply using the axe, whether using the blade or the flat portion, eventually causes the head to fall out of the handle. It doesn't seem to matter whether the axe blade or flat end are used. Things loosen with use. |
Question: | Is there a way to get a replacement knife |
Answer: | Yeah my ax broke but I still have the knife, send me prepaid postage and it’s yours |
Question: | does the knife fall out |
Answer: | I have a very old version of this, the knife used to fall out, it was only a magnet. I hear now there is a strap also. |
Question: | Where was this made |
Answer: | All Gerber products are made in the U. S. A. No exceptions. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it supposed to be hollow on the bottom? Doesnt feel as durable as a solid one would |
Answer: | Yes, it is made that way. They are very durable for what they are, but they are not indestructable, and they are certainly not an Estwing. I've had mine for about a year, and have abused the hell out of it; I've beat on it with hammers and small axes to split logs while camping, dropped it, pounded in stakes, hell a friend of mine even threw it at a tree about a dozen times thinking it could be a throwing axe(it can't), and it never broke. |
Question: | Would this be good for throwing |
Answer: | It's not a throwing axe, so I would guess. No. |
Question: | Is this a badge engineered fiskars x |
Answer: | No. This isn’t the fiskars one. |
Question: | The size, weight, country of origin and materials being the same as the Fiskars X series are identical what makes it worth nearly twice the price |
Answer: | Had I known about the Fiskars I might of purchased it. Bottom line I needed a hatchet for camping I saw the Gerber and know they make good stuff and bought it not thinking about price. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the X27 (36" handle) too long for a short (5'2") female |
Answer: | I am 6 feet 200lbs and the 36 " I have is a tad long. If it is too long for you it will lag behind the line of your arms which can cause you to hit log with the handle and possibly rebound on you. You might find it helpful to find a tool like a spade or bat and swing it with your arms at different lengths to see what is comfortable for you. Although they are likely to be lighter than an axe head. Your strength and weight are key elements in making the decision. You have to be able to get the head around so that it strikes the wood in line with your arms and lands accurately. Choking up on handle can make that alignment harder. Of course the best way is to try one out or a sledge hammer would give you a good answer. This splitting maul is excellent and sharp. The best I have used. I wish I had it when I was heating with wood. |
Question: | how to replace handle on Fiskars Axe |
Answer: | Fiskars products are warranted to the consumer purchaser to be free of defects in material and workmanship for as long as the consumer owns the product. Warranty does not cover sharpening, normal wear and tear, environmental factors, accidental damage, misuse, industrial/commercial use. well after a quick look at the warranty i think you may only get a replacement if it was shipped that way if it was wear and tear or anything like that it isnt their responsibility |
Question: | Brand new axe split a dozen dry logs. Corners of blade already slightly chipped. Never hit rocks or hard objects. Is this normal |
Answer: | My older Fiskars splitting axe, older than the X-series of Fiskars axes, has never been damaged from use. The blade has not been chipped out anywhere. It has been used almost entirely on 16" billets of oak, which has been reasonably straight-grained and not full of knots, although of course some knots have had to be split through. I cannot imagine how or why chipping of the blade would occur, unless it might be from glancing blows struck at an angle with perhaps a twisting motion of some kind not normal to the typically straight downward splitting blow. it's a head-scratcher. |
Question: | On a scale of 1-10, how useful is this super splitting axe against a zombie |
Answer: | With Zombies sometimes recovering from FATAL BLOWS it has always been my practice to follow-up with a GOOD WOOD CHIPPER. AMAZON sells a good 7HP Heavy Duty 212cc Gas Powered 3:1 Multi-Function Pro Wood Chipper Shredder https://www.amazon.com/GreatCircleUSA-Heavy-Duty-212cc-Powered/dp/B075SG6372/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1538798975&sr=1-4&keywords=wood+chipper This can be very messy but is made easier by cutting section with a chainsaw. I use the STIHL MS 271 FARM BOSS 20" bar. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this really only weigh 9.6oz |
Answer: | I think that HAS to be a missed number. It weighs1pound 1.7 oz on my Poulder scale, so closer to 19oz.Still, the best one I have found for backpacking thoughI would not carry except I use a Solo wood stove andthis little axe is useful. |
Question: | Does anyone have this and the Gerber combo axe, with the knife in the handle? Are they really as similar as they look |
Answer: | No, there is no knife in the handle. The handle is hollow & open. |
Question: | Is this definitely for choping; or is for splitting |
Answer: | It chops well and can be used to split smaller logs for tinder. I used it almost everyday this winter and works great. However, mine is 14" long with the same profile and weight. |
Question: | Description says power source is ac/dc. do i have to listen to them in order to chop my wood |
Answer: | Works best with AC/DC. This is not a Molly Hatchet. |

Product features
High Performance Steel
A budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics.
Attractive Blade Coating
Black oxide coating is a chemical bath, or conversion coating, that converts the surface of the blade steel to magnetite. Mainly for appearance, black oxide does add some mild corrosion resistance and tends to minimize light reflection from the blade. The blackening process gives the blade an attractive, smooth, tactical, fierce black surface that is very desirable to knife owners.
Durable Handle
A rubber overmold is a textured rubber layer on the handle scale that provides extra grip, usually molded over a solid polymer handle. With an attractive appearance and exceptional performance, a rubber overmold allows the knife to become more function and durability when in use. Rubber overmolds are textured and detailed to provide a more secure, more safe, nonslip grip.
