12 best block plane
A block plane is a versatile hand tool commonly used in woodworking and carpentry. It falls under the category of hand planes and is an essential tool for various tasks in woodworking and home improvement. Here's what you need to know about block planes:
Design and Purpose: A block plane is a small, handheld plane designed for trimming, shaping, and smoothing wood surfaces. It is compact and lightweight, making it easy to maneuver and control.
Components: A typical block plane consists of several key components:
Body: The body of the block plane is usually made of metal, such as cast iron, with a wooden or plastic handle. It is designed to be comfortable to hold and control.
Blade: The blade, also known as the iron, is a sharp cutting edge that protrudes from the sole of the plane. It is typically made of high-carbon steel and can be adjusted for depth and angle to control the thickness of wood shavings.
Adjustment Mechanism: Block planes feature an adjustment mechanism that allows you to set the depth and angle of the blade. This adjustment allows for precise cutting and shaping of wood.
Mouth: The mouth of the block plane is the opening through which wood shavings are ejected.A narrow mouth provides finer shavings and smoother cuts.
Common Uses: Block planes are versatile tools used for various tasks in woodworking and carpentry, including:
Smoothing Edges: They are used to smooth and chamfer the edges of boards or other wooden pieces.
End Grain Work: Block planes excel at end-grain work, such as trimming the ends of boards or fitting joints.
Shaping and Trimming: Woodworkers use block planes to shape, trim, and adjust the size of wooden components.
Removing Imperfections: They can be used to remove small imperfections, such as bumps or high spots on wood surfaces.
Deburring: Block planes are also handy for removing burrs or sharp edges from cut wood.
Types: There are various types of block planes available, including standard block planes, low-angle block planes, and adjustable mouth block planes. Each type has its unique features and advantages, making them suitable for specific tasks.
Maintenance: To keep a block plane in good working condition, regular maintenance is necessary. This includes sharpening the blade, cleaning the plane, and ensuring all adjustment mechanisms function smoothly.
Block planes are prized for their simplicity, versatility, and ability to quickly and precisely shape and smooth wood surfaces. Whether you're a professional woodworker or a DIY enthusiast, having a block plane in your tool collection can greatly enhance your woodworking capabilities.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a model |
Answer: | Mexico. I think the cutter is made in England though. |
Question: | Why is delivery going to take so long? Even with Prime |
Answer: | Yes the frog can be adjusted for and aft |
Question: | How big is this planer |
Answer: | The angle of the blade is fixed but the frog is adjustable, the depth of the blade is adjustable and the skew of the blade side to side is adjustable, slightly. It is easy to skew the blade when you lock it in as well. Normally, you want the blade as close to perfectly centered as possible. Paul Sellers actually recommends putting a slight convex on the iron's leading edge to prevent gouging at the sides when your iron is set deep. |
Question: | Is this all cast iron, brass and steel, no Aluminum |
Answer: | Bevel down. All standard angle planes are bevel down. Low angle planes, like the #62; are bevel up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this to shave the bottom of my wooden doors to shorten the height |
Answer: | Yes. Make sure the door is stable before using a good plane. Be careful when nearing the outer edges of the door to avoid tear out. Avoid this by clamping a 2X4 or scrap piece of wood at least the same thickness as the door on both ends. |
Question: | What do these (14.9 x 5 x 0.6 inches) measurements refer to |
Answer: | Good question, because that's not the correct size of this plane. It's 9 3/4" long and 2 3/4" wide and 5" tall. |
Question: | I cannot figure out how to put this together, are there any directions online |
Answer: | Try this link http://tooltrip.com/tooltrip9/stanley/stan-bpl/benchplanes.pdf If it doesn't work, search for Stanley plane instructions. You have a 12-220 block plane. You will need to sharpen the blade before using. Many complain about this but it's no big deal - if you are going to use a plane, you better know how to sharpen the blades. |
Question: | Does this have a chipbreaker |
Answer: | No. Not like my larger planes. But, with the micro-adjust brass screw, you can take very fine bites so it doesn't matter. I own about 8 to 10 planes and this one works as well as any other. I love this little one for quick or small jobs. Well built and steady. |

Are you a hobbyist or artisan that enjoys working with wood and in need of a Block Plane? Perhaps you have never used a carpenter’s block plane and wonder, how this tool can help you complete your project? Block planes are commonly used for cleaning up wood components by removing thin shavings, in addition to cutting end grains and doing touchup or finish work. These WORKPRO Block Planes are ideal for cleaning up wood ends and edges by removing thin shavings of wood, in order to make additional wood components fit together tighter, and within desired tolerances. When these low-angle block planes are set at the correct blade depth, they can help smooth rough areas of solid wood components, with greater precision in just a few simple passes. These cast iron block planes are easy to use and include a front wooden handle for improved control. They feature a single hardened and tempered steel blade set at a shallow angle, which allows the blade to slice through end grain with greater efficiency. Best results are achieved when the plane is held at an angle of up to 45 degrees when pulling or pushing across the edge of the wood. This allows the cutting edge to slice much easier through the wood fibers as they pass from one end of the cutting edge to the other. Sharp, dangerous wood corners can be easily removed with these compact planes, a process also known as chamfering, which leaves wood edges with safer, beveled edges. These planes are also frequently used for paring and butting end grains of stock material, for touchup and finish work, and for removing dry, hardened wood glue. Do not wait any longer. Order yours today, and save time and money while providing a smooth finish to your woodworking projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | Who do you use to ship this (usps or a carrier like ups?) also is it shipped in a sturdy box so it doesn't get crushed |
Answer: | The padded part of the cushion belt is 25 inches...the straps on each side are 68 inches long each with a total length of the belt and straps being 161 inches. |
Question: | Do you build these yourself |
Answer: | I can’t say for sure, but it’s not heavy duty, nylon w/ Velcro. Unfortunately Mom rarely uses it because she’s in & out of the bathroom, & I don’t use it to transport her to appts. Check the length & whether it can be secured to the recliner. Sorry couldn’t be more help. |
Question: | If i order today, what day will the package be in the usps system |
Answer: | I don’t think the one I ordered was that long. I was never able to use it effectively with my father. |
Question: | Is there a rubber band with this |
Answer: | Not easily, I sew so I could extend one of the straps. I think there are "extension" available. I was not comfortable with the security though - it was easy for my husband to "undo" (if that is an issue & it was for me). I finally used a extra large back brace (like from HomeDepot) to wrap around him and the chair! They have a wide velco secure area. (Put the large "back" in the front to support him and the velco on the back side of the chair...where he couldn't get to it. That held him up and was much more secure. |

Question: | What is the difference (besides price) of the pc60thp and the pc60thpk |
Answer: | The pc60thpk is a heavy duty contractor model. The pc60thp is a lighter duty for homeowners. |
Question: | how wide is the bades |
Answer: | Mine measures 3 1/4 inches. |
Question: | How does this work with boards that are wider than 3 inches |
Answer: | It does OK but I would practice with some scrap first. I had a 12 inch wide board and made several passes without a straight edge. I stated at a very low setting, 1/64, and made two passes to remove stain. I did have to go back and sand down some overlaping spots. Next time I would use a straight edge to keep the planer straight on each past. Hopes this helps. |
Question: | Is this a single blade or double blade |
Answer: | It is a double blade and a very nice tool. |

I use a standard sheepskins pad with rounded edges for buffing compound but for a finishing product like Faness-it for clearcoat I use a foam egg creat pad. Good luck, I'm sure you will do fine. Stay away from edges and don't get the serface to hot :-) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which are the differences vs 12-220 model |
Answer: | Yes. In QC terms, I can't speak for every plane that they made in this series, but mine came "good to go" right out of the box. The sole was flat to a few mills. The sides were square to the sole. The back of the blade was flat and polished and the bevel only required a light honing to further polish it. I can not speak to the compatibility with Veritas, Lie-Nielson or Hock replacement blades. However, I would be surprised if there is an issue. I should note that I managed to nick the blade planing some 10-20 year old cherry. I managed to find a knot from hell. The Veritas powder-metalurgy blade might have stood up to that, but I can't say that for sure. I hope that helps. |
Question: | Can this be used to make chamfer edges on oak? Was thinking of 15 degree edge for a nicer look |
Answer: | You can buy spare premium blades for almost any hand plane from Hock tools. Search for Hock plane blades and you will find them. My woodworking teacher recommends the "01" versions because they are easier to sharpen - he doesn't think the more expensive 02 Hock blades are really worth it. But since 85% of the function of any hand plane comes from the blade, adding a nice blade to even a junky old plane can get you something that works very well. |
Question: | Is this a good block plane for a homeowner? I need something for the random project that comes up. Any difference in the low profile one |
Answer: | CHN |
Question: | I have several 1"x6" pine that I want to join together for a table top. Would this be the right tool to square the 1" edges if I needed to |
Answer: | Sure I will try to answer questions |

Answer: | Yes they are. I haven't seen one bristle fall off or get stuck in my hair when using it or have seen any bristles on the floor. |
Question: | What is the size of this plane? It is listed as 40 mm which is 1.57". Is this correct |
Answer: | These are used just like any brush that is used along with a blow dryer. Just like in the hair salon. They don't need batteries. |
Question: | How do you adjust and slow the blade? Like the metallic pin that is seen in many Japanese brushes. I dont see a piece for this in the picture |
Answer: | Thank for your interest in Olivia Garden. This particular brush you are viewing is the Olivia Garden Ceramic and Ion Turbo Vent Combo in the 2 1/2" barrel (CITV-COMD). If you are looking for the Olivia Garden Speed XL (CIXL-55) that has a 2 1/8" barrel that would be similar in barrel size but offers different benefits for your hair including faster drying time, as it is made with a Ceramic coated barrel that heats up faster & retains heat longer. Hope this answers your question. Happy styling, Olivia Garden |
Question: | I need to plane the top edge of a door that is getting stuck. Don’t want to remove it from the hinges first. Will this be able to handle that task |
Answer: | I don't have a hard time using mine, as long as my hair is not sopping wet, and as long as my hair is detangled prior to use. But I don't have curly or thick hair, mine is fine and wavy. Did you get the right size for your hair length? |
