12 best rock picks

Rock picks, also known as geological hammers or rock hammers, are specialized hand tools used by geologists, paleontologists, and rock enthusiasts for various purposes related to rock and mineral identification, excavation, and fieldwork. They are typically associated with the category of hand tools and are relevant to those interested in tools for home improvement, especially if they have an interest in geology or fieldwork. Here's what you need to know about rock picks:

  1. Purpose: Rock picks are primarily designed for breaking, splitting, and examining rocks, minerals, and fossils in the field. Geologists and paleontologists use them to extract samples, reveal rock layers, and assess the geological composition of an area.

  2. Design: Rock picks have a distinctive design featuring a hardened steel head and a sturdy handle. The head often has two ends: a pointed pick end and a flat chisel end. This dual-head design allows users to perform various tasks with a single tool.

  3. Pointed Pick End: The pointed pick end is used for breaking rocks, chipping away at stone surfaces, and creating fissures for sample extraction. It is effective for making precise geological observations.

  4. Chisel End: The flat chisel end is suitable for splitting rocks along existing natural fractures, creating straight lines, or trimming samples. It offers more control and precision when working with rocks.

  5. Handle Material: The handle of a rock pick can be made from various materials, including wood, fiberglass, or steel. Ergonomically designed handles with rubber grips are common, providing comfort and reducing hand fatigue during extended use.

  6. Weight: Rock picks come in different weight categories, typically ranging from a few hundred grams to over a kilogram. The weight of the tool can affect its efficiency and ease of use, with lighter picks being more suitable for detailed work and heavier picks for breaking larger rocks.

  7. Durable Construction: Quality rock picks are constructed from durable materials to withstand the rigors of fieldwork. The steel head is often heat-treated for increased strength and longevity.

  8. Safety: When using a rock pick, it's essential to wear protective gear such as safety glasses and gloves to prevent injury from flying rock chips.

  9. Applications: Rock picks are essential tools for geological fieldwork, mining exploration, fossil hunting, and lapidary (stone cutting and shaping) activities. They are valuable for both professionals and hobbyists interested in geology and earth sciences.

  10. Price Range: The cost of rock picks can vary depending on the quality of materials and brand. Entry-level models can be relatively affordable, while professional-grade rock picks may be more expensive.

  11. Popular Brands: Some well-known brands that manufacture rock picks include Estwing, Fiskars, and SE Prospector, among others. These brands offer a range of models to suit different needs and budgets.

In summary, rock picks are indispensable tools for individuals involved in geological research, outdoor exploration, and rock-related hobbies. Their sturdy construction and dual-head design make them versatile instruments for handling rocks and minerals in the field or workshop.

User questions & answers

Question: Chrome extension wecultivate says only that the seller is in ca. where are these made
Answer: Its a rock hammer. Hand held perfect size and price was right That question made no sense
Question: is it one piece or is the handle welded to the head
Answer: I used a cheap brick hammer in Utah on my vacation and it was ok for a couple of hours and then the rocks started to win as they reshaped the striking surfaces. You need a hardened steel hammer for hard rocks. Drop Forged is meaningless unless it is also hardened steel. Take my advice, spend the money on a true hardened steel hammer. I ordered this one and it was so poorly forged that I returned it right away. It was a long way from "precision" so I'm also guessing the steel is a long way from "hardened".
Question: Is this food die shaping raw crystals
Answer: Hi,Instruction cards included are to leave the gel in place 20-30 minutes. That's conservative because people tend to have varying tolerance to the whitening gel. The 44% carbamide peroxide whitening gel is the strongest concentration available so it's important to apply a very small amount of whitening gel into dental trays. The gel will expand once activated and provide ample teeth coverage. Any excessive amount applied will allow gel to remain suspended on gums causing the potential for irritation. The instructions go on to state "Extending treatment times may be done depending on tooth sensitivity." The longer the gel is left on the more whitening results. But after about 45 minutes to an hour, the gel has usually dissipated to the point where added whitening benefit is marginal. But in general, it is at the discretion of the user how long to keep gel applied once you are comfortable with treatments, etc.
Question: Will it stand up to hobby rockhounding use on granite and basalt
Answer: I believe it recommends 45 minute treatments, but not sure of duration of days? Your gums will get very sensitive if overuse of the product so need to follow recommended directions, product definitely works😁

User questions & answers

Question: How heavy is it? Comparable to a 2.5 lb, or 5 lb mattock
Answer: Hi, we use this for everything. Most fossils are in some type of limestone or shale. This works very well to clear debris and get into the non exposed layers. We use it for fossil and rock hunting.
Question: Whats the difference between this one, and the hundred dollar one
Answer: one very solid piece.
Question: New at fossil-hunting - in addition to this hammer, should I consider a smaller Estwing (maybe 13 oz.) for finer work? Thanks
Answer: Yes, the Gfeller Hammer Holster will fit. You might want to get the holster for larger diameter handles just to make it easier but either will fit.I believer we're currently out of stock on Gfeller holsters. You may find a source here on Amazon or you could go directly to the Gfeller and make the purchase.-dana
Question: Is it a solid piece of steel? Or a two piece
Answer: The elongate side is a pointed tip. The short side is flat.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I buy a replacement handle separately? Thanks
Answer: I never thought of the problem, even though it happens to me also. Lots of tools are that way. However, you could drill a small hole just below the head, on the handle, and put a round head screw there. Make sure you seat the head tightly to the handle before you do that. Maybe do one on both sides.
Question: is this made in USA
Answer: This is basically a hand tool. It could dig up a small area of sod at a time, and you would be on your hands and knees. It would not be impossible; but I’d never use this tool for that job. I’m using it to chop notches for steps into a hillside, and clear the ground cover around them, which is also slow and tedious....so I know this COULD chop sod. It’s just not easy. But to dig up a yard’s worth of sod, I’d rent a machine.
Question: What is the best way to secure the head of this tool so it doesn't slip down and hit your hand when in use
Answer: I would say so, plastic.
Question: can i use this to dig up sod
Answer: I think probably not good for breaking rocks..its heavy and very sturdy but I would use a sledge hammer for breaking up rocks.
