8 best grit for sharpening lawn mower blades
Grit for sharpening lawn mower blades is a crucial component of the sharpening process. Sharpening lawn mower blades is essential for maintaining a healthy lawn and ensuring that your mower operates efficiently. Here's what you need to know about grit for sharpening lawn mower blades:
Grit Types: When sharpening lawn mower blades, you typically use abrasive materials with different grit sizes. Grit refers to the coarseness or fineness of the abrasive particles on the sharpening tool's surface. Common grit types for sharpening lawn mower blades include coarse, medium, and fine.
Coarse Grit: Coarse grit abrasives are used for initial sharpening when the blade has significant dullness or damage. Coarse grit removes material quickly and efficiently, restoring the blade's cutting edge.
Medium Grit: Medium grit abrasives are employed to refine the blade's edge after using a coarse grit. This step helps achieve a sharper edge and smoother cutting performance.
Fine Grit: Fine grit abrasives are used for finishing touches on the sharpened blade. Fine grit creates a polished and razor-sharp edge that enhances the lawn mower's cutting efficiency. It also helps prolong the time between sharpenings.
Sharpening Tools: To sharpen a lawn mower blade, you can use various tools, including sharpening stones, files, or grinding wheels. These tools are available in different grit sizes, and you should select the appropriate grit for each stage of sharpening.
File Handles: File handles are essential accessories for using files effectively in blade sharpening. They provide a comfortable grip and control while you work on the blade's edge.
Safety Precautions: When sharpening lawn mower blades, safety is paramount. Wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves and eye protection, to prevent injury from flying sparks, metal shavings, or abrasive particles.
Technique: Proper technique is crucial for achieving a sharp and balanced edge on your lawn mower blade.Maintain a consistent angle while sharpening, typically matching the original bevel angle of the blade. Ensure even sharpening along the blade's length to maintain balance.
Frequency: The frequency of blade sharpening depends on how often you use your lawn mower and the type of grass you're cutting. As a general guideline, sharpen your lawn mower blade at least once a season or more frequently if you notice reduced cutting performance.
Blade Removal: Always remove the lawn mower blade from the mower before sharpening it. This ensures your safety and allows for easier access to the blade.
Regularly sharpening your lawn mower blade with the appropriate grit ensures that your mower operates efficiently, cuts grass cleanly, and promotes a healthy lawn. It's an essential maintenance task for anyone who wants to keep their lawn in top condition.

User questions & answers
Question: | How can you tell which side is the coarse side, And which is the fine side, On the black handled knife sharper |
Answer: | It actually had the opposite effect on my scissors, too. I ruined three pair of scissors. I have the AccuSharp tool for sharpening knives and that works really well, though. |
Question: | Can you use to sharpen Tweezers |
Answer: | The 001 Accusharp contains two tungsten carbide blades designed to sharpen double-beveled angles at approx. 21 degrees; such as chef's knives, pocket knives, machetes and even bread serrated knives. The 002 ShearSharp contains one tungsten carbide blade designed to sharpen flat edges like your household scissors or tin snips. The 012 is the just part number that combines both the 001 and the 002 to one combo pack. |
Question: | Will it be a good choice to sharpen dog grooming sissors |
Answer: | Yes there is a big difference. The Accusharp 001 is designed to sharpen DOUBLE-BEVELED blades, which contains two, angled, tungsten carbide blades; designed to sharpen both sides of your blade. The 006 GardenSharp (not 060) has ONE, angled, tungsten carbide blade that is meant for SINGLE-BEVELED blades. The other 'blade' is not meant to sharpen, it is simple a steel rod designed to guide your sharpener. This is because on your pruners, loppers, any single-edge blades only need ONE side to be sharpened to make a clean cut. If both sides of your loppers are angled then you will just bend the stem instead of cut it. Do not use AccuSharp 001 on single-beveled garden tools; it is not designed for them. NOTE: The 001 & 006 are on the UPC code. |
Question: | Can I use this to sharpen lawn mower blades |
Answer: | My son and nephew has a PlayStation 4 so I’m not sure it read in the details that they worked for both systems haven’t tried it yet |

SHARPAL Diamond Sharpener-the fastest and most effective way to sharpen an edge!
There is a ‘break-in’ period for diamond sharpeners. When first use, the surface will appear to be especially rough. This roughness is due to the final manufacturing process and will be removed over time without impacting performance. As the diamond surface wears down, more and more diamond grits are exposed and the sharpener cuts faster.

User questions & answers
Question: | Due to the similar type of blade, would this also work on household scissors |
Answer: | In the relaxed state the hose 'shrinks' in length and the plastic web between the wire coils forms ribs on the inside. Stretched out to full length and straight the inside is almost smooth. |
Question: | Will this sharpener work for grass shears |
Answer: | I use it in a DR Pro Leafvac. After 3 passes over a pretty rough 3 acres with thick leaves, sticks, and nuts it’s holding up well. I run it on a commercial zero turn. |
Question: | Does this work with mulching mower blades or only standard mowers |
Answer: | Yes, additional bags can be ordered at www.cedarcreekorganics.com. They come in packs of 25 or 100 bags. |
Question: | Can this sharpener be used without removing the blade from the mower |
Answer: | I don’t know but bears sure like it. I had all mine taken by a black bear, caused a lot of trouble! |

User questions & answers
Question: | this doesn't look like a real Oragon, can somebody confirm |
Answer: | Yes, but it doesn't mulch that great as with all craftsman blades for that 22" mower blade, craftsman style mulch blades don't have 2 stage mulch blades, there just longer an curvier cutting edge. The snapper style are the best |
Question: | Will it fit craftsman |
Answer: | I use it on my craftsman 22 inch self propelled mower. |
Question: | Will this work for a Craftsman 917.370440 - 22" mower |
Answer: | it comes in a tub, but it isn't listed how much is included. I would say about a cup. |
Question: | Will this fit in 22 inch craftsman mower |
Answer: | The Pro Mow Blade Sharpening Kit comes with 80 grit compound. |
Question: | How much compound is included |
Answer: | Metal |
Question: | what is the grit for this product |
Answer: | Unfortunately, the current steering wheel HUB (NRG SRK-MX3H) bought for Can AM Sport DPS 1000R definitely does not fit the 1999 Subaru Outback. In NRG's product catalog, none of their steering wheel HUBs are listed to fit Outback, but they have some stated to fit other Subaru models. Perhaps one of these fit Outback as well, since manufacturers often have the same solution for several of their models. Recommends contacting NRG if they can respond specifically, or possibly with a Subaru parts warehouse to check for possible coincident HUB-related part numbers between Outback and other Subaru models listed in the NRG catalog. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where are they Made |
Answer: | My craftsman 917370680 required a 5/8 Star Hole. Despite this product description stating a 5/8 Star hole, the blade sent to me In Apr 2016, DID NOT have a star shaped hole. There was a round hole in the center. If your 917376406 requires a 5/8 Star hole, I would recommend moving on to something else and not buying this blade |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the Rockwell Hardness number |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is the file on both sides or is one side blank |
Answer: | Fine to medium but best file i have used |
Question: | Is the nicholson file 06706n the same as mercer file bcdrt |
Answer: | The wheel fitted my 1/2" grinder without problems ! It comes with adapters to fit3 sizes of arbor ! |
Question: | s this a coarse or fine file |
Answer: | One guy in the Q&A said it comes with adapters to fit 3 different size arbors. Mine was a 1" so I threw away the plastic adapter in the middle without reading what it was. It should work for you. By the way, people who say it isn't balanced are crazy. Mine was great, but if it isn't, you need to true it. Get one of those little T shaped diamond surfaced tools. I was amazed how good it worked. |
Question: | Will this fit on a grinder with a 1/2 inch arbor |
Answer: | When I was a boy 60+ years ago, "Sheffield" meant "Made in England". Nowadays the alien nation and people of China have taken over manufacture of most everything Steel, and of many or most of everything else "household essential". This is all part of the Pandemic Plan for China to be a major part of World Domination by the LDS Mormon Gods & Goddesses. I know. I was with the LDS Mormons for 11 years; I listened to them teach that "Someday [they] would rule the human population on Planet Earth, [which should now already be named 'Dystopia']. --Capt. Gizzard E. Simcoe III & his sidekick Buzzard. |
Question: | I need a grinding wheel that will fit a 3/4” arbor. Will this fit if not what will |
Answer: | It looks like the three I bought . If it has a hardened material on the bottom of the cutting edge and a thick gloss black paint ,that has to be filed of the cutting edge before you use it , then it probably is an Oragon . As long as you don't let the grass get too high it works great . |
