12 best precision vises
Precision vises, often referred to as machinist vises, are essential tools used in machining, metalworking, woodworking, and various other industries where accuracy and stability are crucial. They are designed to securely hold workpieces in a fixed position during cutting, milling, drilling, grinding, or other precision machining operations. Here's what you need to know about precision vises:
Design and Construction: Precision vises are typically made of high-quality materials such as cast iron or steel to ensure durability and stability. They feature a sturdy base with a sliding or swiveling jaw mechanism that allows for precise adjustment.
Accuracy: These vises are known for their high level of accuracy and repeatability. They are used when tight tolerances and precise measurements are essential in machining tasks.
Types of Precision Vises:
- Mechanical Vises: These vises are operated manually using a handle or a lead screw to tighten the jaws around the workpiece. They are suitable for a wide range of machining operations.
- Hydraulic Vises: Hydraulic vises use hydraulic pressure to clamp the workpiece. They are often preferred for heavy-duty applications, as they can exert significant clamping force with ease.
- Pneumatic Vises: Pneumatic vises use compressed air to operate and provide a quick and automated clamping solution. They are often used in high-speed manufacturing processes.
Jaw Types: Precision vises may have different types of jaws to accommodate various workpieces:
- Smooth Jaws: These jaws provide a flat and even clamping surface, suitable for holding delicate or finished parts.
- Serrated Jaws: Serrated jaws have teeth that grip into the workpiece, providing a more secure hold on rough or irregularly shaped materials.
- V-Jaws: V-shaped jaws are used for holding round or cylindrical workpieces.
Versatility: Precision vises are available in various sizes and configurations to accommodate a wide range of workpiece sizes and shapes. Some vises also offer swiveling or tilting features, allowing for multiple machining angles.
Mounting Options: These vises can be mounted on workbenches, milling machines, drill presses, or other machining equipment using bolts or clamps.
Safety: When using precision vises, it's essential to ensure that the workpiece is securely clamped to prevent it from shifting during machining, which could lead to accidents or imprecise results.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and lubrication, is necessary to keep precision vises in optimal working condition.
In summary, precision vises are indispensable tools in precision machining and manufacturing processes. They provide the necessary stability and accuracy to hold workpieces securely during various machining operations, ensuring the production of high-quality parts and components. These vises come in different types and jaw configurations to suit a wide range of applications in industries such as metalworking, woodworking, and more.

Durable Material
The vise is made of QT500 ductile cast iron, with strong toughness, high tensile strength, and wear resistance. Internal refine grinding treatment, smooth use, no jamming, rust, and corrosion resistance.
Hardened Clamping Jaw
The jaws are thickened and finely ground, and the maximum clamping force can reach 19 KN. The lockdown vise machine adopts a fully enclosed design, and iron filings are not easy to enter, which improves the service life of the vise.
Quality Lead Screw
The thread pitch of the ladder screw is larger than the standard screw. The surface is quenched, turned, and ground. It is more wear-resistant, durable, and corrosion-resistant than the ordinary screw, and has higher accuracy.
Adjustable Handle
The universal joint handle is ductile iron material, which is not easy to rust and is flexible and durable. You can precisely adjust the gripping force of the jaws through the handle, and complete the workpiece clamping work excellently.
Precision Design
The guide rail surface is refined ground, seamless contact surface, and the positioning is more accurate. Compared with a standard vise, it can be used upright without affecting the accuracy of clamping the workpiece.
Wide Application
Precision milling vise is the main accessory of precision milling machine and NC/CNC machine tool. Suitable for finishing milling machines, drilling machines, and precision parts.
4" Multifunction Precision Lockdown Vise
During workshop operation, many workpieces minor damage due to their materials or excessive force, which caused work delays or economic losses. Therefore, to avoid damage to your workpiece, we recommend that you use the vise to clamp the workpiece. Our vise has a strong clamping force and can hold the workpiece very firmly. It can ensure the stability of the workpiece and avoid damage.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are all the dimensions |
Answer: | The body of the vise is 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 7" (not counting the screw and knob). If the jaws are fully open, the screw and knob extend 4-7/8" from the body. When the jaws are fully closed, the screw and knob extend 1-7/8" from the body. When fully open, space between the jaws is 2-61/64". Weight of the vise is about 8 pounds. |
Question: | How do you mount this vice to a table? Are there screw holes on the bottom |
Answer: | These are intended to be mounted to t-slot tables or clamped in a larger machine vise. There are no holes on the bottom because there would be no way to access screws on the bottom for t-slot table mounting. You use a Hold Down Clamp Clamping kit to screw into the holes on the side of the vise, then screw the hold down clamps into t-slot nuts in your t-slot table. If you meant a normal table that you would drill holes through to bolt something to, you're looking for a different kind of vise than this one. |
Question: | Does the 2" vise come with hold down hardware? and would this fit a unimat db |
Answer: | Does not come with any hold-down hardware and I can't imagine it would fit any Unimat machine. Apparently, I bought the 2-1/2" version and it measures 2-1/2"W x 2-1/2" H, x 7" L not counting the screw and handle that sticks out. This is a LARGE, heavy vice! I have a Sherline mill, which I know is larger than the Unimat and there's not much of any use for it on my mill. It's just way too big. I would suspect the 2" vice would be way too large as well. I'd look for something much smaller. Maybe something like this - https://www.amazon.com/HFS-PRECISION-GRINDING-SCREWLESS-TOOLMAKER/dp/B00NG0XSKA/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=2%22+machinist+vise&qid=1581543490&sr=8-4 |
Question: | Would it be possible to drill it, I want to make a metal lathe tool holder |
Answer: | I don’t no I never try better make tool holders |
