12 best high temperature paints

High-temperature paints are specialized coatings designed to withstand high temperatures without degrading or losing their color and finish. These paints are commonly used in various applications where surfaces are exposed to extreme heat, such as automotive exhaust systems, grills, stoves, furnaces, industrial equipment, and more. Here's what you need to know about high-temperature paints:

  1. Heat Resistance: The primary characteristic of high-temperature paints is their ability to withstand elevated temperatures. They are formulated to resist heat and can typically endure temperatures ranging from 500 to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit (260 to 1,093 degrees Celsius), depending on the specific product.

  2. Applications: High-temperature paints are used in a variety of applications, including:

    • Automotive: They are commonly used to paint exhaust pipes, engine components, and brake calipers.
    • Grills and Stoves: These paints are applied to the exterior surfaces of grills, wood-burning stoves, and fireplaces.
    • Industrial Equipment: High-temperature paints are used in industrial settings to coat machinery and equipment that generate heat during operation.
    • Home Appliances: Certain household appliances like ovens and radiators may also benefit from high-temperature paint.
  3. Types of High-Temperature Paints:

    • Heat Resistant Spray Paint: This type of paint is available in aerosol cans and is easy to apply. It is suitable for small to medium-sized projects and provides a smooth finish.

    • Brush-On High-Temperature Paint: Brush-on formulations are available in cans and offer greater control over application. They are suitable for both small and larger projects and allow for more precise coverage.

    • High-Temperature Engine Paint: Specifically designed for automotive applications, these paints are formulated to resist oil and gasoline, making them ideal for engine components.

  4. Color Options: High-temperature paints come in various colors, allowing users to choose the finish that best matches their project or application. Common colors include black, silver, gray, and white.

  5. Preparation: Proper surface preparation is essential when applying high-temperature paints. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of rust or other contaminants. Some products may require the use of a high-temperature primer before applying the paint.

  6. Drying and Curing: High-temperature paints typically require a curing process to reach their maximum heat resistance. This process may involve air drying, baking, or heat curing, depending on the product's instructions.

  7. Safety Precautions: When working with high-temperature paints, it's essential to follow safety precautions, including wearing appropriate protective gear and ensuring good ventilation in the workspace.

  8. Brand Selection: Choosing a reputable brand for high-temperature paints is crucial to ensure quality and durability. Brands like Rust-Oleum, VHT, and Dupli-Color are known for their high-temperature paint products.

In summary, high-temperature paints are specialized coatings that can withstand extreme heat without losing their finish or color. They are used in a wide range of applications, including automotive, grills, stoves, and industrial equipment. Proper surface preparation and following manufacturer instructions are essential for achieving the best results when using high-temperature paints.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this on a wood burning fireplace firebox
Answer: Yes especially if it is an alloy box but if the box is made of wood you might want to seal and prime it with the high temperature primer first and make sure that there are no cracks before you go over it with the rust oleum high temp paint, for best results!
Question: Can I use this paint to spray the outside of a wood burning stove
Answer: I bought 6 cabs and did my gas grill inside and out. After it cured, I ran it for 30 minutes without food. I have a "holder" to grill fish so I am using that for all cooking so I and not cooking directly on the painted area. If after a month it holds up, I will do test cooking on it directly for the stray cats.
Question: Paint scratches off very easily 2 days later, even after curing at 200 and 400 degrees. Prepped with degreaser and 150 grit sandpaper. What could I have done wrong
Answer: You did not do anything wrong. This particular paint is not durable at all, but it withstands very very high temps. If you need high heat AND durability, then you need to look into some of the high heat Cerakote and Duracoat products, which are much more involved in applying than this is. I just answered another question on here, and in that answer I mentioned watching YouTube vids of ppl using this paint. In this vids, you'll see they are very delicate w the painted objects after cured when re-installing the object in a car engine compartment, for example. The ONLY thing this paint is good at is withstanding very high heat and being applied relatively easily and cheaply. Ps. I guess I should mention that this product is sometimes sold as an "enamel" but this particular paint is not truly what you'd call an enamel. Enamel implies high durability, and this does not have high durability.
Question: What temperatures are required to cure the paint multiple times at various temperatures in an oven? Will the final coating survive any contact with food
Answer: 24 hours AFTER painted - place in oven one hour @ 175 degrees. A second curing a few hours later is sometimes helpful.Any contact with food in either direction is bad. (part to food / food to part)Make sure wife is out of town.Cook 2 or 3 pizzas one after another to help disguise smell.

User questions & answers

Question: For prepping a fire pit do you apply to the outside only or interior, log grate, etc
Answer: I applied to the outside and inside but not the mesh cover or the log grate.
Question: can this be used on kitchen appliances? (fridge, stove, dishwasher
Answer: I'm sure it can be used on stove because by it's an high heat be tolerance spray
Question: Would you use this on a new fire pit to help it last or only once a fire pit starts to deteriorate
Answer: You could use it either way. before deterioration might be best, in my opinion. I don't know if that paint layer would peel quicker, though.Good luck!
Question: Can this be used on the inside lid of my grill which has become very rusted (after sanding of course
Answer: I would NEVER put paint n the inside of a grill. I have been grilling and smoking eat for 35 years. For the outside it's OK but never paint the inside. Get a round wire brush for your drill and brush it clean. Coat the inside of your grill with Canola oil. Oil and season it by cranking up the heat with no food. Let it get to a very high temp for at least 45 minutes to an hour for a proper seasoning. Then you will be ready to cook. Cleaning of the hood is not really required of a smoker or grill. Best of luck. Smoke rolling here today. 6 racks of baby backs, 2 pork buttts and 20 chicken quarters. I love it.

  • 1200 Degree F, flat black brush-on paint will restore the beauty of your old stove or grill, or bring a great look to a new project
  • Adheres to steel, cast iron, aluminum, brick, and most other metals
  • Great for grills, stoves, smokers, stove pipes, or chimney caps
  • No primer needed
  • Flat black color

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be rolled or brushed on? Will it leave brush marks on a cast iron stove? Wondering if I should go with a spray vs this paint
Answer: I brushed it onto the stainless steel stove pipe so it would match our stove. With 2 coats, I havent noticed any brush marks, but I havent gotten right up on it. From 2-3 feet away, it just looks matted black, and you dont get the runs you'll get with spray paint.
Question: Can this be used to paint cast iron gas stove burner grates?? Thanks
Answer: We used this paint on our firewall in our fire place and it worked great. Really gave the fireplace a new, clean look. The paint is a flat finish so using it for stove grates may not look attractive. Our gas stove grates have a factory high gloss finish and wipe clean very easily. I suggest you go to Rutland's website and see if the paint is available in other finishes. Good Luck.
Question: Would this adhere to tile/brick around a firplace
Answer: It will definitely adhere to the brick. I have used it inside my fireplaces on several new homes to keep the firebox black. It will eventually burn off in some places on so I just repaint it every couple of years.
Question: Can I use it to paint the inside of a wood burning brick fireplace
Answer: Good to know about not using it inside a fireplace. The description said it was "Adheres to steel, cast iron, aluminum, brick, and most other metals" and I almost bought it for the bricks inside my fireplace!

User questions & answers

Question: can u spray it
Answer: Yes, you can. I used seven parts of paint to one part mineral spirits. 30 psi at the spray gun. Wonderful results and much less expensive than spray cans.
Question: Is this a paint that can be easily removed from brushes with soap and water
Answer: You don't specify what type of Rust-Oleum paint you have. I find most rust-oleum paints are of an oil base and thus would require a mineral base thinner to clean brushes.
Question: can this be used on a stove hood
Answer: Yes. It is a good choice for stove hoods. It has a temp range up to 1200 degrees. If you get our stove hood that hot, you deserve to burn your house down and write a book how you did it.
Question: I will be painting a bbq smoker. how would you recommend to prep the surface before applying the paint
Answer: I would at least knock off the rust then wipe it down with thinner, mineral spirits or other solvent. The cleaner you get the metal, the better the paint will bond. I put it on my BBQ grill, I didn't put a lot of effort into prep and cleaning, just knocked off the loose rust and paint, it still looks pretty good.

Question: Could i spray this directly on the grill burners (not the holes of course) and the brackets that hold the burners to the fire box
Answer: My guess would be no, it's for high heat but probably not that high. I just spray the outside and legs after winter. It does a great job of covering the rust on my cheapo Walmart BBQ. Makes it look brand new every spring, this is my third season using it.
Question: Do you think I could spray my oven racks with this? Would it scratch off at the bottom
Answer: I used this for the exterior of my BBQ grill not the metal racks but the enclosure/ exterior body. I personally would not spray this on my oven racks for safety reasons.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the finish? Flat, glossy
Answer: Flat finish has a pale color, glossy has a shine to color.
Question: is this good to paint my heater metal cover, its pealing
Answer: Yes , after you remove the pealing paint, spray on.
Question: Can I spray on the interior of an old charcoal grill that I'm trying to fix up
Answer: I needed to do the same with my old grill. Inside the top the old paint was flakening off. After scraping I sprayed on with the Krylon. The problem was that additional flakening continued to occur and hence more flaks falling on the food. Maybe if you took the grill top off and sanded it completely then all would be okay in using the Krylon.
Question: COLOR
Answer: It's a flat black. I used it on my fireplace insert and it dried looking like cast iron. Very nice.
