User questions & answers
Question: | What is the warranty on this |
Answer: | I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again. |
Question: | How long can the product be stored once the container is opened |
Answer: | We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer . |
Question: | I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer |
Answer: | I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster. |
Question: | we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth |
Answer: | I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared. |

User questions & answers
Question: | In the reviews, everyone mentions the light oak color but I don’t see it available. Is it discontinued or renamed |
Answer: | I bought 2 gallons of light oak about a month ago. Look again or call the company. |
Question: | Can I reapply this over the old coat when I need to |
Answer: | I'd clean the boards the best you can and let them dry, and then yes, you can reapply it. It says so on the can. |
Question: | How many sq ft will 2.5 gallons cover |
Answer: | depends. cover says 100 - 150 sq ft per gallon. I used 7.5 gallons on about 600sq ft of deck and barely had enough, that was 2 coats. 1st coat sucked up a lot, 2nd coat went a lot farther |
Question: | How many years on before having to reapply |
Answer: | I live at 9000 ft. in the mountains- .wind, rain, snow, UV. I try to touch up every 2-3 years. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The listing says semi-transparent, but the picture says transparent, which version is this |
Answer: | Semi |
Question: | Is this a gallon container of the product |
Answer: | Yes this is a one gallon of Thompson water seal |
Question: | what clear seal do you recommend to use on 12year old pressure treated planks |
Answer: | I've used Thompson's water-based semi-transparent stain/sealer 3 times now for my 15 year-old pressure-treated deck and it has always done a great job of covering and protecting the wood. It doesn't really last the 4 years they claim, but still very good. They also make an oil-based clear sealer and I use that on my cedar pergola, also very good stuff but it's hard to work with because it doesn't cleanup with water. As an alternative to the oil-base they have an all-purpose water-based clear sealer for wood and masonry. I would use that on my pergola if it was made of pressure treated wood, but with cedar I really want a penetrating oil. So for your pressure treated deck, I would recommend the water-based clear sealer. Given how well the semi-transparent stain has worked for me, I would expect good results with the clear as well. You will certainly want to clean the wood first if you expect to brighten the gray appearance of aged wood. I spray oxygen bleach on the wood first and then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse before sealing. |
Question: | Would this product work well on untreated Adirondack furniture |
Answer: | Yes, I think it would be suitable. I have only used it on my deck however. Good protection in a wet climate. Rub it down well after it dries to keep the color from getting on clothes though if you're using a color stain. |

The Thompson's Company has earned a well-deserved reputation as identifying industry trends and emerging technologies.
In the early 1920’s, polymer chemist Edward Addis Thompson developed a formula that protected buildings from exterior water damage. His discovery became known as Thompson's WaterSeal Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer and initially was used by architectural and construction firms for concrete applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | How well does it work with extension handle |
Answer: | I have metal shutters, it worked good on these. If you want, take some wide 2 inch wide brown tape, place it on a piece of window trim and shutter area, paint it, make sure it dries, but do not leave the tape on to long, you might not get the tape off easy. Take a peek, see what it looks like, if you do not like it, just peel the tape off. Keep in mind, you also might want to use only "one or two" coats of paint on the tape. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Can I use Solid stain with this |
Answer: | Tough durable no gloss |
Question: | How well does it work on solid stain application |
Answer: | Would work great this is wonderful paint thick enough to cover in one coat |
Question: | What long handle is recommended for use with this brush |
Answer: | The can says 1 Gal. Covers up to 400 sq. Ft. or 100 to 150 sq. Ft. also Drying is said to be 20 min. to touch 4 hours between coats. There is no one answer, The Can makes claims but there are many variables, Temperature, Humidly, for drying time and Material Condition and type for Coverage. Old dry wood soaks it up like a sponge, figure 100 Sq ft, New primed smooth material figure about 400 sq ft. Drying takes longer when the material is Smooth and Primed. |
