14 best sun deck sealers

Sun deck sealers are essential products used in outdoor home improvement projects to protect and enhance the appearance of wooden decks, patios, and other outdoor surfaces. They fall under the category of stains, finishes, and sealers and play a crucial role in maintaining and preserving the wood's integrity. Here's what you need to know about sun deck sealers:

  1. Purpose: Sun deck sealers are primarily used to protect wooden surfaces from the harmful effects of UV radiation, moisture, mildew, and general wear and tear. They create a protective barrier that helps prevent water penetration, wood rot, and damage caused by the sun's rays.

  2. Types of Sun Deck Sealers:

    • Clear Sealers: These provide a transparent finish that allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through while protecting it from the elements.
    • Semi-Transparent Sealers: These offer a subtle tint that enhances the wood's appearance while still allowing some of the grain to show.
    • Solid Color Sealers: These provide a more opaque finish and are often used to completely change the wood's color while providing robust protection.
  3. Benefits:

    • Protection: Sun deck sealers form a protective layer that prevents water damage, wood rot, and UV fading.
    • Enhancement: They can enhance the wood's natural color and grain, giving it a more vibrant and appealing look.
    • Longevity: Properly applied deck sealers can extend the lifespan of your outdoor wooden surfaces.
  4. Application:

    • Before applying a sealer, it's essential to clean the deck thoroughly to remove dirt, debris, and any previous coatings.
    • Apply the sealer evenly using a brush, roller, or sprayer, following the manufacturer's instructions.
    • It's important to let the sealer dry completely before allowing foot traffic or placing furniture on the deck.
  5. Maintenance: Sun deck sealers require periodic maintenance. Depending on the product and environmental conditions, you may need to reapply the sealer every 1-3 years.

  6. Choosing the Right Sealer:

    • Consider the type of wood and its condition.
    • Think about the desired appearance (clear, semi-transparent, or solid color).
    • Determine the level of UV protection required.
    • Check if the sealer is suitable for your climate and weather conditions.
  7. Popular Brands: There are several well-known brands that offer sun deck sealers, including Behr, Thompson's WaterSeal, Cabot, and Minwax.

  8. Environmental Considerations: Some sealers are available in eco-friendly or low-VOC (volatile organic compound) options, which are better for the environment.

In summary, sun deck sealers are essential for maintaining and protecting outdoor wooden surfaces. They come in various types and finishes, and choosing the right one depends on your specific needs and preferences. Proper application and regular maintenance can help keep your deck or patio looking beautiful and functional for years to come.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the preferred application method according to the label
Answer: Apply to a clean, dry composite deck using a manual pump sprayer. Spray the sealer in an even , ample amount to soak in well. Cover end pieces and edges of boards thoroughly as well. Use a squeegee to get even coverage if necessary. Allow to dry thoroughly, 24 to 48 hours if needed. It will dry clear unless there is a deep puddle left standing upon application. (Small puddles will soak in and dry clear. Deep peddles may leave a slightly milky look after drying.) If you have no mold in your deck before you use this, this product will keep mold out of your composite deck for about three years.
Question: Is this product water based
Answer: I haven't put it down yet. I'm not sure if it's water based or not. I'm ordering a second gallon before I start as I won't have enough to finish. I will post what I find once I've had an opportunity to use it.
Question: I have eon decking which can't have any petroleum based products. what exactly is in this product and will it harm my eon decking
Answer: I don't know about your decking product, but we used this cleaner on our "TREX" deck, and it worked great. We power washed the deck before applying the cleaner, and it dried looking practically brand new.
Question: will this work on Trex decking
Answer: This works very well on Trex decking.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

Product features

Stain + Sealant in One

Stain + Sealant in One protects and beautifies in one step.

Weather-Ready Application

Allows greater opportunities for staining when it may rain or when the weather may be too hot or cold.

Enhanced waterproofing protection

Helps make sure your wood is protected from cracking due to water.

Advanced SunBlock UV

Helps protects your wood from dangerous UV rays that can wear down the coating.

How much stain do you need to buy?

One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.

Two Gallons

Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.

Three or more Gallons

Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.

Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.

How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps

Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.

STEP 2

Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.

STEP 3

For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.

For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.

You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.

Olympic Wood Stains: A reputation as durable as our products

  • Water repellent; deep penetrating
  • Ideal for decks, siding, fences and trim
  • Available in 5 wood toned colors
  • Not intended for interior surfaces

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be applied to a deck that the wood is pine treated wood
Answer: Some say wait a year to stain and some say do it right away. I called Cabot with a question at 1-800-877-8246 and they answered pretty fast. I used this on an old deck and it came out very dark but I was ok with that. Couldnt find 7 gallons all at one place. Had to brush it all in to look good. $40 for a gallon is a good price. Accidentally bough $40 for a quart. Make sure you read description. This is a special oil/water mix. It rinses with water.
Question: Is this easily removed from metal balusters? Does the natural make the wood much darker
Answer: Yep, just have rag with you and wipe it off. This is a great stain, highly recommend it. So, I purchased the Natural Cedar, the stain looks milky in the can, but applies and as it drys, gives a rich Cedar color.
Question: How many square feet (approximately) will a 1-gal can cover
Answer: If you sand/prep before and wash planks - 1 gal will get you at least 350 sq feet.
Question: What is the difference between the Heartwood 19204 and the Heartwood 3004? Thanks
Answer: You can call Cabot at 1-800-US-STAIN (877-8246) and they answer pretty quickly. The 19204 is probably the new miscible oil/water mix. And the 3004 would be the classic oil mix. You cannot mix the two or use one on top of the other but you can clean the 19204 brushes after with water. They claim the new mix is more durable.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on composite wood
Answer: Hello, Yes lightly wipe those spots and and make sure those areas are dry before putting into use. note: wet spots could have been caused by a lack of penetration into the wood (a previous stain or sealant could be the culprit), applying to heavy, or the presence of moisture in the wood.
Question: Can this be used on kitchen caninets
Answer: Hello, Thanks for your question on this. The plastic lid can be slightly difficult to take off, but is applied to ensure safe transport. To remove, I have found that a paint can opener or flat head screw driver wedged either in the top or on the side on the can works pretty easily. Be sure not to use a hammer to try and wedge the flat head screw driver in, as you want to avoid damaging the metal can.
Question: The item is described as "White" but the can in the picture says "clear". Which is it
Answer: 12x 12ft
Question: Can I use this sealer for a wooden animal enclosure? I’ve stained it already, just looking for a finish. And will it dry clear
Answer: We don’t know. We applied it firstly on the new fence.

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains

Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, EXOTIC creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape. This key feature helps prevent damage to wood caused by water intrusion, such as: wood rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical wood sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack & peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE uses cutting-edge, nano-particle technology to allow wood to breath and help prevent water vapor damage by protecting wood from the inside out.

Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.

SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment, easier to apply than solvent based wood finishes and clean up with soap & water. They do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.

Quick & Easy Application

Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated, but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight. Clean-up brushes or sprayer with warm soapy water.

Choose from 11 Wood Stain Tints

EXOTIC can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray. The tints are sold separately and when mixed with Clear, the tinted formula provides additional UV protection from harmful sun rays.

Surface Preparation & Coverage

Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity of the surface. All surfaces should be cleaned with SEAL-ONCE All Wood Cleaner before sealing for best penetration and performance. Remove all old coatings, dust, debris and loose material. Remove oil, grease, algae, grime, mill glaze and mold and mildew stains with appropriate cleaners.

User questions & answers

Question: How effective is this compared to other wood preservative products--green/brown/copper stains--you have used for wood touching ground
Answer: It is not as effective as tinted products. I apply it every year, and it seems to have extended the life of my 22-year-old cedar deck. It's not great, but I think that's the cost of using a clear product. The deck gets a lot of snow. And there is one area that never sees the sun. Those boards never get to dry completely, and 2 of them needed to be replaced after about 20 years. Those that do get some sun are still solid.
Question: Can I use this to coat wooden clipboards to protect from liquids
Answer: Thompsons Water Seal will protect anything made of wood. Just paint the TWS on with a brush and let dry for 24 hours and apply a second coat. Make sure you coat the edges really well also.
Question: What is product sheen ? I want a matte / satin when dried. This is for cedar posts on a covered deck, doesn't see much sun or rain. Thanks
Answer: Not too much sheen. Great product for our fence.
Question: Is this appropriate for ground-contact Douglas Fir for kids sandbox/playset? Trying to avoid pressure-treated and the cost of redwood if possible
Answer: Enclosed please find the CAUTION use for this product by the manufacturer. Also have in mind this product is for EXTERIOR USE ONLY.I hope this will help to answer your question.CAUTIONSCAUTIONS: Use only with adequate ventilation. For exterior use only. To avoid overexposure, if treating enclosed exterior rooms or porches, open windows and doors or use other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. User questions & answers

Question: Will this peel, flake off after 2 - 3 years
Answer: I don’t know, I just completed my application to my decking and wood fence about 6 months ago and so far they both look great. I don’t think this product will flake or peel off because is a stain but I think is best if you contact the manufacturer and see what they will advise you. So far under the Phoenix Sun I can see a little fading but I will reapply again in about a year or so. Thanks for the question, Jorge
Question: Can anyone share what their decks looked like one year later using this product
Answer: I‘ve used this stain for many years on my decks. I’ve restained the horizontal surfaces every other year, the vertical surfaces every 5 years. I just completely stripped old twp stain off of my deck this spring and stained it in May with one coat of Ready Seal. I thought I probably needed two coats since it was the first staining of a clean deck, but waited to see. It faded quite a bit (not surprised) and I added a second coat earlier today. Based on past experience, I expect this to hold its color well for a couple of years, then I’ll hose it off (not powerwash) and add another coat on the horizontal surfaces in 2 years, and I’ll do the same on the vertical surfaces in about 5 years.
Question: can this be used on wooden playsets/swingsets? Is it non-toxic
Answer: It's used on decks quite a bit and I'm not aware of anybody ever having an issue. It's on my deck and more than one child has crawled around on that without growing a third eye.
Question: Can someone who purchased the light oak or golden pine color upload a photo to see how it turned out, please? also, the longevity on a fence? thanks
Answer: Check out pics on the Ready Seal website. Color varies based on wood type. I’m not sure about longevity on a fence, I’ve only used it in decks. With decks I’ve found that after getting the original staining established (two coats for decks in my experience), it lasts for about two years, then I hose it off (not powerwash) and add another coat to the horizontal surfaces. I do the same on the vertical surfaces about once every 5 years.

User questions & answers

Question: I am looking for something to use on a large wood carving that has been stained with a gel stain. Would this do the trick
Answer: I would say no. The whole idea of this product is to penetrate into the wood. You are to put all your coats on in a short period of time if you don’t sits on top and is gummy. Using it on a Composite decking unless it can soak in won’t be good.
Question: Is the 16oz bottle enough to cover a 60 square feet deck? Thanks
Answer: No,. Seal-Once products are exterior non- film forming penetrating water proofers. Do not use Seal - Once on kitchen cabinets or caninets.
Question: I’m thinking of using this product on my teak furniture. I’ve noticed that teak oil causes blackening is the furniture outside over time. Will This
Answer: It went on semi clear over wood furniture. Dry it looks clear. Did not darken the wood at all.
Question: I have oiled this deck would this product work
Answer: This will dry clear, but it is really more of a sealer than a finish. It leaves it feeling almost unfinished but will repel water. Not sure about using it over a stain. I would check in to that before using it.

Based on 131 reviews Check latest price

Product description

ABOUT US

The JetCoat 5 Year White Reflective Roof Coating is an acrylic elastomeric roof coating designed to form a rubber-like membrane over a variety of roof surfaces. It reflects the sun's rays, resulting in a cooler home and energy cost savings. Designed for use on metal, polyurethane foam, masonry, asphalt, and wood surfaces, this cost-efficient and versatile roof coating is great for a variety of projects.

BEFORE APPLICATION

Sweep off all dirt, dust, and debris. Remove rust, mildew, oil, grease, or other foreign material on the surface. Allow freshly applied asphalt roofs to cure a minimum of 4 weeks prior to applying this coating. Scrub roof with roof cleaner or bleach solution (1 part chlorine bleach and 3 parts water). Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

APPLICATION

Stir pail thoroughly. Do not dilute. For best results apply White Elastomeric Roof Coating with a soft brush, 3/4” nap paint roller, or high pressure sprayer (Tip Size: .021 to .025). For optimum performance, durability and warranty purposes, apply a second coat.

  • LONG-LASTING PROTECTION - This fortified acrylic roof coating reflects sun rays and keeps your roof cool for years, reducing energy fees and maintenance costs. With our 5-year protection, you won’t have to worry about reapplying every year. Dries white.
  • VARIETY OF SURFACES - Apply this coating to EDPM rubber roofs, polyurethane foam, APP and SBS modified bitumen, asphalt, mobile homes and RV’s, concrete, wood and more. Not recommended for gravel, dead level (flat), or shingled roof surfaces.
  • MAXIMUM COVERAGE - Just one gallon of this roof coating will cover approximately 50-70 square feet per coat. We recommend two coats for best coverage. Once dry, your roof will be protected by a rubber-like cooling membrane.
  • EASY APPLICATION - When applying this elastomeric roof coating, the temperature must be a minimum of 60°F and rising. Note: Do not apply when temperature is expected to drop below 60°F within a 24 hour period.
  • DRYING TIME - This reflective roof coating dries to the touch within 2-3 hours. Please wait 6-8 hours before applying the second coat.

User questions & answers

Question: What about a concrete tile roof? What tint to change the color? Thanks
Answer: I don't really know, but doubt it. It will probably lift off. I scrubbed my car haul trailer roof clean with bleach and spic n span and applied 5 coats over the summer with a roller. It didn't help. I still had leaks and had to tarp it. The stuff peeled off in layers in some spots, seemed to stick in others -but time will tell. This year, I poured the stuff on (I bought a 5 gallon pail) since the stuff set up ok in a pie tin I used to hold a smaller pail for painting on the spots that were troublesome last year (without success). It peeled off in thick layers. I tried Flex seal paste for the dip that peeled off. I would think you would have to scrub your roof very clean and am still not sure it would stick well. The wind sometimes blows it off both the wood and metal parts of my roof.
Question: Can it be painted over
Answer: Yes excellent product
Question: I want to use this inside a new chicken coop to create a durable waterproof surface for easy cleaning. Would this work well
Answer: This is an excellent coating and I would have no problem using on the inside of a chicken coop
Question: Does this come in colors
Answer: Not sure put easy to tint

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be applied to damp wood? How would it be on raised garden beds
Answer: I used sun shield on unstained teak wood. It worked marvelously. I don't know about how it is going to work on a gel stain.
Question: Is this solid, or semi-transparent? Title says solid. But description and product image show semi-transparent
Answer: I would not count on a 16 oz bottle covering that much very well. There are variables having to do with the condition of the wood that might make it really soak up the product. I actually never even thought of doing a deck with it. I have used it for quite some time on outdoor furniture and love it for my woodworking bench in the shop. I hope that helps. I would be really curious as to how it works on a deck!
Question: So is this 1gallon or 16 gallons? I’ve seen a similar question but I wanna be sure
Answer: No it will not blacken, it will bring the wood back to its original color. Teak oil and linseed oils will darken wood and make the wood sticky. I would recommend cleaning the wood with the Touch of Oranges Wood Cleaner first, apply the sun shield, let it set over night, come back and wipe off any excess oil with terry cloth towels. The wood will be beautiful, preserved, sun proof and water proof. Thanks
Question: In the description, it says 16 gallon. What size is it
Answer: The directions say to wipe on, let it sit for 30 minutes, then buff on. I use the 16 oz bottle for my front door and outdoor wood furniture. I have no personal experience with using this product on a wood deck; however, the description mentions wood decks. Good Luck.
