11 best fence stain sealers

Fence stain sealers are products used to protect and enhance the appearance of wooden fences. These sealers provide a protective barrier against various environmental factors and can help prolong the life of the wood. Here is some information about fence stain sealers:

  1. Purpose: Fence stain sealers serve a dual purpose. They both enhance the visual appeal of the fence by adding color or enhancing the natural wood grain and protect the wood from damage caused by weather, UV rays, moisture, and other elements.

  2. Types of Sealers:

    • Stain Sealers: These products combine both staining and sealing properties. They provide color to the wood while also forming a protective barrier. Stains come in various opacity levels, including transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stains.
    • Clear Sealers: Clear sealers do not add color to the wood but protect it from moisture and UV damage. They allow the natural wood grain to show through.
  3. Benefits:

    • Enhanced Appearance: Stain sealers can enhance the visual appeal of your fence by adding color and depth to the wood.
    • Protection: They create a protective barrier that prevents water penetration, which can lead to rot, and UV damage, which can cause fading and deterioration.
    • Durability: Properly applied sealers can extend the lifespan of your fence by preventing damage from weather and environmental factors.
    • Maintenance: Stained and sealed fences are often easier to clean and require less maintenance compared to untreated wood.
  4. Application:

    • Fence stain sealers can be applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers.
    • It's important to prepare the surface by cleaning and sanding it before applying the sealer.
    • Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the number of coats required and drying times.
  5. Choosing the Right Product:

    • Consider the type of wood your fence is made of and its condition when selecting a sealer.
    • Different sealers are suitable for various wood types and environmental conditions.
    • Decide whether you want a clear sealer to maintain the natural wood appearance or a stain sealer to add color.
  6. Maintenance:

    • Depending on the product and environmental conditions, you may need to reapply the sealer every 1-3 years to maintain its protective qualities and appearance.
    • Regular inspections can help identify areas that need touch-ups or resealing.
  7. Safety Precautions:

    • When applying fence stain sealers, ensure proper ventilation and use appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection.
    • Dispose of used materials and containers in accordance with local regulations.

In summary, fence stain sealers are essential for maintaining and protecting wooden fences. They not only enhance the appearance of the fence but also extend its lifespan by shielding it from the effects of weather and UV rays. Choosing the right sealer and applying it correctly can help you enjoy a beautiful and long-lasting fence.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

Answer: I bought 2 gallons of light oak about a month ago. Look again or call the company.
Question: Can I reapply this over the old coat when I need to
Answer: I'd clean the boards the best you can and let them dry, and then yes, you can reapply it. It says so on the can.
Question: How many sq ft will 2.5 gallons cover
Answer: depends. cover says 100 - 150 sq ft per gallon. I used 7.5 gallons on about 600sq ft of deck and barely had enough, that was 2 coats. 1st coat sucked up a lot, 2nd coat went a lot farther
Question: How many years on before having to reapply
Answer: I live at 9000 ft. in the mountains- .wind, rain, snow, UV. I try to touch up every 2-3 years.
Question: Difference between marine formula? Why wouldn’t I want marine formula on my land fence
Answer: Look at our Nano and Multi -Surface Concentrate. Clear will allow the wood to grey naturally.
Question: Can this product be sprayed
Answer: Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat.
Question: How well does this work on pressure treated decking...near the beach
Answer: Never received it. Said there was a problem with delivery. 😱 ????????????????

User questions & answers

Question: The listing says semi-transparent, but the picture says transparent, which version is this
Answer: Semi
Question: Is this a gallon container of the product
Answer: Yes this is a one gallon of Thompson water seal
Question: what clear seal do you recommend to use on 12year old pressure treated planks
Answer: I've used Thompson's water-based semi-transparent stain/sealer 3 times now for my 15 year-old pressure-treated deck and it has always done a great job of covering and protecting the wood. It doesn't really last the 4 years they claim, but still very good. They also make an oil-based clear sealer and I use that on my cedar pergola, also very good stuff but it's hard to work with because it doesn't cleanup with water. As an alternative to the oil-base they have an all-purpose water-based clear sealer for wood and masonry. I would use that on my pergola if it was made of pressure treated wood, but with cedar I really want a penetrating oil. So for your pressure treated deck, I would recommend the water-based clear sealer. Given how well the semi-transparent stain has worked for me, I would expect good results with the clear as well. You will certainly want to clean the wood first if you expect to brighten the gray appearance of aged wood. I spray oxygen bleach on the wood first and then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse before sealing.
Question: Would this product work well on untreated Adirondack furniture
Answer: Yes, I think it would be suitable. I have only used it on my deck however. Good protection in a wet climate. Rub it down well after it dries to keep the color from getting on clothes though if you're using a color stain.

The Thompson's Company has earned a well-deserved reputation as identifying industry trends and emerging technologies.

In the early 1920’s, polymer chemist Edward Addis Thompson developed a formula that protected buildings from exterior water damage. His discovery became known as Thompson's WaterSeal Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer and initially was used by architectural and construction firms for concrete applications.

User questions & answers

Question: Should I wipe down the wet spots after a few days of drying
Answer: Hello, Yes lightly wipe those spots and and make sure those areas are dry before putting into use. note: wet spots could have been caused by a lack of penetration into the wood (a previous stain or sealant could be the culprit), applying to heavy, or the presence of moisture in the wood.
Question: How do you open the plastic seal lid
Answer: Hello, Thanks for your question on this. The plastic lid can be slightly difficult to take off, but is applied to ensure safe transport. To remove, I have found that a paint can opener or flat head screw driver wedged either in the top or on the side on the can works pretty easily. Be sure not to use a hammer to try and wedge the flat head screw driver in, as you want to avoid damaging the metal can.
Question: What is the coverage for a 1 gal can
Answer: 12x 12ft
Question: How long does it last? how long until it needs to be reapplied
Answer: We don’t know. We applied it firstly on the new fence.

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains

Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, NANO creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape. This key feature helps prevent damage to wood caused by water intrusion, such as: wood rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical wood sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack & peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE uses cutting-edge, nano-particle technology to allow wood to breath and help prevent water vapor damage by protecting wood from the inside out.

Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.

SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment and do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.

Quick & Easy Application

Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight.

Available in 11 Tinted Wood Stain Colors

NANO can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray. The tints are sold separately and when mixed with Clear, the tinted formula provides additional UV protection from harmful sun rays.

Surface Preparation & Coverage

Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity of the surface. All surfaces should be cleaned with SEAL-ONCE All Wood Cleaner before sealing for best penetration and performance. Remove all old coatings, dust, debris and loose material. Remove oil, grease, algae, grime, mill glaze and mold and mildew stains with appropriate cleaners.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does 1 gallon cover
Answer: About 1/4 of an 8x12 shed. I used 4 gallons for the whole shed
Question: Will this work with a paint gun
Answer: Yes, this product works well with an airless sprayer
Question: Is there any texture to this solid stain? Does it last without peeling for a couple years
Answer: There is no texture, just a smooth paint that took the texture of what we painted it on. No idea on the peel, only just used in the last couple weeks.
Question: How much do I need for a 24’ x 18’ deck
Answer: This is a water based product and as such gets a better coverage area. The product should yield approximately 600 SF. However, when staining a deck, you'll not meet that coverage area if you use an airless paint sprayer. Typically the average would be 450 - 475 SF. If you roll it, you should expect to get between 500 - 525 SF.

Answer: The video quality is good
Question: Could this be used to stain plywood subflooring indoors
Answer: 7-8 minutes after full charged per battery.
Question: Can I use this over pre dyed wood (alcohol stain
Answer: Just bought this drone. Absolutely NOT 8 min fly time. After calibration, gps sync, and using the camera to take pics, let alone video.. best fly time was 3.5 minutes.. was same on both batteries. Maybe if you take off and just let it hover with no maneuvers it may be longer. Going to buy another set and see if these were just old batteries. Good luck
