3 best stud finder for tile
Finding studs behind tiled walls can be challenging because traditional stud finders that rely on detecting changes in density are often less effective when dealing with tile. However, there are a few specialized tools and techniques you can use to locate studs behind tile:
Magnetic Stud Finders: Magnetic stud finders are one of the more reliable options for locating studs behind tiled walls. They work by detecting the screws or nails that are used to attach the tile to the wall. When the tool encounters metal fasteners, it reacts, indicating the presence of a stud. These stud finders are relatively simple to use and are often effective.
Electronic Stud Finders: Some electronic stud finders are designed specifically for use on tiled walls. They use different technologies, such as radar or capacitive sensors, to detect changes in the wall's composition. These can work on tile, but their accuracy may vary depending on the thickness and composition of the tile.
Visual Inspection: In some cases, you can visually inspect the wall for signs of stud locations.Look for patterns in the tile or any visible screws, which may indicate the presence of a stud. Keep in mind that this method is not always reliable, and it may require removing or damaging some tiles to get a better view.
Measuring from Corners: You can also measure from the corners of the wall to estimate the location of studs. Standard stud spacing is typically either 16 inches or 24 inches apart. By measuring from a corner and using this standard spacing as a guide, you can make an educated guess about where the studs might be.
Knocking: While not as precise as other methods, tapping or knocking on the wall can sometimes help you identify the location of a stud. A hollow sound may indicate an area between studs, while a solid sound may suggest a stud. This method is best used in conjunction with other techniques.
When working with tile, it's important to be careful to avoid damaging the tiles or the wall. If possible, practice your stud-finding technique in an inconspicuous area before attempting to locate studs in a more visible part of the wall. Additionally, consider using a stud finder that is specifically designed for use on tile or other challenging surfaces to increase your chances of success.

Stud Scan Detection
Deep Scan Mode scans through 2 layers of drywall up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep. DeepScan Mode is a higher sensitivity scanning mode that should be used when there are extra layers of wallboard or paneling. To minimize false positives and/or finding other objects further behind the wall that may not be a stud, always start your scan in StudScan Mode first.
Metal Scan Detection
Tavool wall canner will locate metal studs in StudScan, DeepScan, and Metal Scan Modes. Since Tavool stud finders are looking for a change in density behind drywall, not a particular material, in StudScan and DeepScan Modes the detector will react to metal studs the same as it would for wooden studs.
After you detect the center of a object, Please Use Metal Scan to determine if the previous reading in Stud scan was a wood stud, metal stud, or pipe.
Live AC Wire Detection
AC Wire detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded electrical wiring up to 2 inches (51 mm) deep. In all modes, this wall scanner always detect and indicate the Live AC Wire.
Note: AC Wire Detection works in both StudScan / DeepScan / MetalScan Modes. The AC Wire Detection Icon will flash when live, unshielded wires are detected.
Step 1:Calibrate the tool before every scan
After choose the mode, press and hold the scan button( on the side of the tool) to calibrate this tool. Wait for the reducing bars disappeared and beep to confirm calibration has completed.
In stud/deep mode, put it on the wall where you want to detect to calibrate it ;In AC/Metal mode, put it in the air to calibrate it.
Step 2: Scan the wall
Hold down the button, then move the stud finder along the wall slowly, if shake or lift the scanner accidently, the device needs to be re-calibrate.
The narrow on the screen togather with the beep signal alter, guides you to find the location of the stud.
Step 3: Find the location of the stud
When the signal bar is full and the beep alarm is loudest, it means you have found the center of an object.Mark it with your pencil.
Then choose the Metal Scan mode to test whether it is a metal. After you confirm that it is not a metal, it means that you found the center of a stud. (More details refer to the above description of "Metal Scan Detection")Then you can drill it to hang thing

User questions & answers
Question: | does it detect floor studs under carpet and padding |
Answer: | Scan goes 1.5 inches on deep scan most subfloors are 1 inch plus carpet and pad.....my guess is no. Im guessing you need to add floor outlet. In that case look for hvac vents in floor to show orientation of floor joices. Best thing ive done is drill 1/8 inch hole and put long steel wire down through insulation then go in crawl to see if in between floor joices. Ive seen some electricians just drill it where homeowner wants floor outlet and if they hit joice they just drilled it out and installed floorbox to hide mistake. Most stud finders dont do good on flooring |
Question: | Does it work on metal studs |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Our walls are 3/4 inch tongue and groove. Will this be able to detect through that |
Answer: | The ProSensor 710+ should detect through wood tongue and groove walling material. |
Question: | will it detect and show studs behind plaster and lath |
Answer: | This unit can detect studs through lath and plaster, but it is not guaranteed as it is on drywall. Because lath and plaster usually is usually thicker and less consistent, it could lead to some inconsistent readings. The multiple sensors and deep sensing capabilities on this stud finder give it a better chance on lath and plaster, but it cannot be guaranteed. |
