Answer:	3/8" is is NOT correct - it is much smaller. I ordered this item on the basis of this answer, but the largest diameter it can accommodate is a regular pencil. It's a great product but since I wanted to use it with micro pens, it will not work for me.
Question:	Can this be set to turn on in the morning as an alarm clock
Answer:	Because if it didn't, and you were facing south, and you wanted to face north for a variety of compass-reading requirements, the cover would be covering the compass. Also, if you spin the compass to align to true north, the pointer would spin slightly as well. Temporarily, of course, but it's still annoying. All sighting compasses have this feature. It's what allows you to share coordinates with allies... Like in PUBG!
