9 best reverse osmosis system for aquarium
A reverse osmosis (RO) system for aquariums is a specialized water filtration system used by aquarium enthusiasts to provide high-quality, purified water for their fish tanks. Here's what you need to know about reverse osmosis systems for aquariums:
Purification Process: Reverse osmosis is a water purification process that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove impurities, contaminants, and dissolved solids from tap water. It works by forcing water through the membrane, leaving behind contaminants while allowing pure water to pass through.
Benefits for Aquariums:
- Removal of Impurities: RO systems effectively remove chlorine, chloramines, heavy metals, dissolved minerals, and other impurities that can be harmful to aquarium inhabitants.
- Consistent Water Quality: Using RO water ensures a consistent and stable water chemistry, which is essential for maintaining a healthy and thriving aquarium environment.
- Controlled Parameters: Aquarium enthusiasts can control and customize water parameters such as pH, hardness, and mineral content to suit the specific needs of their fish and plants.
Components of an RO System:
- Pre-filters: These remove larger particles, sediments, and chlorine from the water before it enters the RO membrane.
- RO Membrane: The heart of the system, this semipermeable membrane selectively allows water molecules to pass while rejecting impurities.
- Post-filters: After passing through the RO membrane, the water may go through additional filters to further purify it.
- Storage Tank: Some RO systems include a storage tank to hold the purified water until it's needed for the aquarium.
- Faucet or Dispenser: This allows users to access the RO water.
Waste Water: One drawback of RO systems is that they produce a certain amount of waste water for every gallon of purified water. This is because the impurities and contaminants are flushed away. Some systems may have ways to minimize this waste.
Maintenance: RO systems require regular maintenance, including changing pre-filters and post-filters, as well as periodic cleaning and replacement of the RO membrane. Maintenance schedules can vary depending on the water quality and usage.
Installation: RO systems can be installed under the sink or in a convenient location near the aquarium. They typically require access to a water source, a drain for wastewater, and an electrical outlet for power (if applicable).
Testing: It's important to regularly test the water produced by the RO system to ensure that it meets the desired parameters for your aquarium.
Sizing: The size of the RO system should be chosen based on the volume of water you need for your aquarium and the water quality of your source water.
In summary, a reverse osmosis system for aquariums is a valuable tool for aquarium enthusiasts who want to provide their fish and plants with a consistent and purified water source. These systems remove impurities and contaminants, allowing for precise control over water parameters and helping to maintain a healthy and thriving aquatic ecosystem. However, they do require maintenance and consideration of waste water production.

User questions & answers
Question: | Where does the waste water go? I want to install this under my sink for an Insinkerator instant hot water unit. How do I connect it? To drain |
Answer: | If you are going under the sink, you would want a drain saddle, they go on your drain plumbing under sink and feed the waste right down your drain. |
Question: | What would I need to get for a 220 gallon tank |
Answer: | People say that you should do a 10% to 15% water replacement weekly, or 20-30% if it is heavily stocked. If your tank is 220 gallons, you have 200 to 210 gallons of actual water in there, with the rest displaced by gravel, sand, decorations, or what have you, so we're talking about ~25 gallons a week, 50 if it is overstocked. The small RO buddy produces about 14 gallons per day (36 goes down the drain) and so that is sufficient to replace up to 168 gallons per week. I would highly recommend you have a 30 to 50 gallon tank laying around somewhere for the RO buddy to dump into, so that you can just siphon water from the catch tank to your sump weekly as you dump out the old water (makes great fertilizer). |
Question: | How can i connect this to my faucet, the garden hose attachment is too big |
Answer: | If you hook up often, i would recommend Spectrapure Quick Connect Faucet adaptor. It just snaps on and off, no screwing it on and off like the Lowes/HD type. More expensive but more convenient |
Question: | can I add an additional membrane and housing to reduce wastewater |
Answer: | Yes you can. Please contact us at 888-548-3480, Mon-Thurs 6:30am-3pm PST and we can help you. Ken / Aquatic Life USA |

Simply remove the aerator from your kitchen or bathroom sink and use one of the included adapters to convert to a standard garden hose thread. Then use the included hose to 1/4" tubing adapter. Or connect directly to your washing machine spigot.
RO Units Produce Filtered & Waste
All RO units produce both filtered water and concentrate water. The water that does not pass through the membrane is the waste water. Waste water has a higher concentration of total dissolved solids and is safe to use for watering plants.
Collect your RO Water
The RO Buddie will produce about 2 gallons of filtered water per hour if your water pressure is 65 PSI and the water temperature is 77°F. Use a bucket or barrel to collect your water for use later.
1/4" Tubing & Easy Connectors
Use the included 1/4" tubing to easily plumb your RO Buddie. The tubing simply pushes into the press-fit connectors 5/8" and locks into place for a leak-free setup.
Translucent Sediment Cartridge
The one-piece sealed sediment cartridge housing is translucent, making it easy to view the condition of the filter media inside. No more guessing what your filter looks like!
Simple On, Simple Off
When you are ready to make RO water, simply turn on the faucet. When finished, turn off the faucet. Fill your bucket in the tub incase you forget and it overflows. Setting a timer makes remembering easier.
Live in the NYC Area?
Based on information presented in the most recent Water Quality Report, we suggest using an additional pre-filter for RO and RO/DI systems that use the NYC area water supply.
Are you on well water?
People on well water often have CO2 in the water that can quickly deplete the DI resin cartridge. If you are on well water, check for CO2 prior to purchasing the RO Buddie.
Chloramines in your water?
The RO Buddie carbon cartridge removes chlorine from tap water. However, it does not remove chloramines. Check with your water company or test your water for chloramines prior to purchasing.

User questions & answers
Question: | How often do you have to change the RO membrane |
Answer: | Hi! I use this system to get purified water for a big fish tank that I have so that said y can manage some ppm points above the drinkable line even though I have that gap I usually change the membrane every 3-4 months, once I had to change it faster due to a chemical that the water came with and busted the membrane but my technician says when the ppm start to raise from its stable point it’s time to think of replacement even when it’s not the time. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Can i use in a house |
Answer: | Yes! of course! |
Question: | What is the waist to fresh water put out 2/1 or |
Answer: | It’s 3 gallons of waste water for every 1 gallon.. but buy a ERP Pump or Water saver kit. It will lower the waste significantly ... |
Question: | Can I use this water to Drink, make coffee , cook with? Etc |
Answer: | You might find that it tastes different than you are used to. Deionized water has no minerals in it. Minerals are what gives water a taste. There may also be small amounts of deionizing resins left in the water. There shouldn’t be, but it’s possible. I don’t believe that it would hurt you though. |

User questions & answers
Question: | one of the DI filters are leaking. Has anyone else had this problem |
Answer: | The best way is to keep track of the gallons of water you make through the unit and follow these guidelines: Sediment cartridge removes particulate material found in tap water. Operating Life of 1,500 to 2,000 gallons depending on water quality. Carbon cartridge removes chlorine from most incoming tap water supplies for up to six months. Operating Life of 1,000 to 1,500 gallons depending on water quality. Membrane removes 95% of TDS and should be replaced every 1-2 years. The membrane may last longer if flushed regularly. For a 4-stage system the color changing mixed bed resin DI cartridge should be replaced when the resin changes completely to a tan color. Ken @ Aquatic Life |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where can I get filters and a new membrane for this system? Help appreciated |
Answer: | Similar problem first time removing filter canister. Wiped threads clean and lubricated threds with a very small amount of silicone lubricant. Canister hand tightened an additional full turn and did not leak. Also insured sealing surfaces clean and not craked or deformed. |
Question: | What is water to waste ratio |
Answer: | You may want to double check your waste line, my unit came with it already installed on waste side. And yes, the flow restrictor is a must on ro systems as they create pressure throughout the membrane and maintain adequate reject and permeate flow. |
Question: | What size is the tubing/hoses |
Answer: | The unit came with a valve to control the pressure going into the unit |
Question: | Where can I find replacement cartridges for this and how long should they be changed |
Answer: | It comes with 10 foot tubing. Fifty sounds like a lot, but I can't see why you can't do it other than making sure it is one piece to avoid leaks. I will ask in a reef forum for you to be sure, but I would say as long as you're not trying to run the ouput tubing upstairs it should be okUPDATE: Nobody I asked has ever run more than 25 feet. Those who do let it run a few minutes before collecting water to make sure it's all "fresh". I think 50 is a lot, so maybe it's not quite that far? Why do you have such a long run? Mine is very short by design, but I could have put my RO/DI unit and my collection bucket in different places and would still not have more than 20 feet. If you could provide details I am happy to help if I can. |
